Thistle seeds can lay dormant in the soil for 50 years. We are always going to be in battle with them 😅 they can also be beneficial to break up compacted clay like soils. All you have to do is hit them with a shovel at the base and keep the root in the soil.
I figure it must be crows, not ghosts. I worked with community gardens for many years. Gardeners said they saw crows trying to “straighten things up” after breaking into raised beds for delicious grubs. Crows always have that “just act natural, no one will suspect a thing” attitude.
Thistles are there because your soil is compacted. They help break up the ground when its hard and allows for water to permeate into the ground. Same thing with dandelions. They may be a nuisance but do provide a benefit to the habitat they are in. As far as the lathe maybe frost heaves? If an animal came upon it after it had been pushed out due to expanding ice it may have used the wood as a step or something to launch itself up into the bed. Purple Anemones are up here on vancouver island are a beauty of a flowering plant. We only have one so I'll try to get some seeds from this one. Good choice. Attempting Ground cherries this year since the Tomatillos last year were insane, they loved it here.
That makes me appreciate the thistles more, thank you!! Also it hasn't been too cold here so idk about frost but who knows! I'm so jealous of your growing zone! This is my first time growing anemones so I'm excited to see how they do. Also a huge fan of ground cherries! 🥰
@@bellaviglianti Not knowing how to explain the taste of a Tomatillo was an experience. this should be fun, pickled the green tomatillos at the end of the season, that worked out nicely! Thanks Bella.
Hi Bella ! You could set up a camera in your garden! I planted purple pansies also. You're fortunate to have land for a garden. I only have 2 pots at my apartment building. I love all of your selections. I hope they flourish. Looks like a gorgeous spring day. Thanks ❤😊
We just got a night camera recently so I might have to set it up in the garden for a bit! Pansies are the absolute best! Such happy flowers for early spring when not much else is happening 🥰

Time to break out the night cam!

I was wondering that!! We have so many in our yard so it could be!

@@bellaviglianti Ground cherries are new, just wondering what they taste similar to? These are the Aunt Molly's from West coast seeds.
@@mrparrehesian1742 kind of like a tomato but with a lot more sweetness, it's a hard flavour to describe but definitely unique!
