I think I'm going to agree with you about a bit more winter to come. It has been such an odd winter so anything is possible. In 1993 (I remember since was my oldest son's first winter), we had a blizzard around the 3rd week of March. Interstate 75 was closed miles south of Atlanta. Southern Georgia Highway Maintenance doesn't own snow removal equipment, therefore many college kids on Spring Break were stranded in shelters for the week. Let's hope we don't have a repeat of that storm system!! Thanks for sharing your planting with us! Stay safe!
SO exciting!!! I need to really think about how many of each of the varieties I'm starting for the spring and summer garden!! A lot of them are best direct sown so there may not be too much to start, really! Which feels odd! ♥
Your garden is looking so good already. It was in the 40's here today & I took the opportunity to pot up 3 peach seeds that I sprouted in my refrigerator. Of course they had to come back into the house because the forcast is for freezing rain & snow on Wednesday. Northern Iowa looks really nasty, hopefully not so terrible here in South Central. Saying prayers for an abundant harvest for your family this year! God bless!
Yay for planting ❤️ Some of our biggest snows have been in March. Last year we had snow in March and was sunburnt and looking for shade by mid-April. My Pappaw never planted his summer garden until after Mother’s Day. I am excited to try some spring gardening this year! It’s so hard to be patient!
Maybe for next Q&A.?.. did you ever study or have a background in horticultural/ growing in general prior to moving to your homestead? You both always seem to have such a vast ..rolodex..if you will of knowledge. From gardening, to fencing or structure building, or agriculture in general. How much of this process has been research or ," learn as you go" vs. Maybe what experience or prior knowledge you have had as a family?" Long winded question, and i hope it makes sense. Love your channel and i appreciate what you're doing and sharing. 💚
I can't do gardens anymore, cos of my back. But I so enjoyed your video, it brought back lots of precious memories of my childhood n days I was able to have a garden. I thought of my Uncle cos whenever I'd help him n my cousins plant anything he'd always take us for ice cream. Thanks for sharin, God bless y'all ❤️ from Indiana
You really are so inspirational Heather!! You have so much knowledge about so many things and I so appreciate you sharing!!! I LOVE the music/song in this video, so soothing to this old lady's soul!! Thank you and God Bless you!!😇👍🙏🙏🙏
Glad to see that I'm not the only one prepping and looking forward to a pea harvest this year. I started in trays with my peas, only because I have a couple things to do with my garden raised beds before I actually set the peas in it. Plus, I have onions still growing in it from last spring that aren't quite ready to harvest yet. First time I've ever witnessed someone use Rabbit manure like that in starter cups. Seems like a great idea though. And your starter plants looked very healthy so they must've been loving it. I might try that with a few Tomato seeds next weekend when I start more seeds and Pepper plants.
We will be starting soon. This is a mild February so I hope we don’t get a surprise. We have seen light snow here in the middle of March but not often.
Your like me in SC mountains we never can tell but this year definitely this week we hit 80. So I see cold wet snow March. I have kin from Covington, to Refrew Valley in KY. I'm coming up Lord willing to see them . I usually stay around Florence. Maybe I could meet you . Loved the collaboration. Have a blessed day thank you. ❤️🙏
👀 so great 😍 to have plants in the ground Heather, I haven't tried my luck at any crop other than summer crop n I want peas n onions myself 🗯🤔❗... I ❤ to 👀 things coming up n growing in spring, so I'm goin to try at some broccoli n peas n onions soon too , my summer plants mom always got here in on mother's day, flowers, n 🍅 tomatoes n a row of green onion sets n that was the extent but we had corn, zucchini, tomato variety, yellow squash, green beans n more onions, n both cucumbers n pickling cucumbers in our family garden at my brothers n also at dad's work along with the tobacco crop n farm animals n hickory nut trees n walnut we'd harvest till cool weather set in carrying our buckets n walking n picking all weekend till dark it seemed n daddy always had a salt shaker in his pocket for us to pick 🍅 n cucumbers off the vine ❤❗... To go back n smell the 🍅 n cucumbers n tobacco n corn as we picked our harvest n topped the tobacco with our daddy n family n grill each Friday n having Sunday dinners at mammaw after church was the life n Its something ALOT of kids 🗯🤔 know 🚫 about anymore 😤❗... ALOT of the land was sold n now a cemetery n commercial property sadly 😥❗... I don't have a lot of land but I have a nice size yard n I'm making sure my grandchildren know all I can instill in them with wat I do have , soon I'm going to buy a lol piece of land to have our family homestead n I can't wait, that way they can enjoy the country n appreciate it as I did💞💖💞❗I'm learning so much from you n you're a inspiration to so many Heather, thanks for the knowledge n in terms so easy to follow no matter the topic or what you're doing sweet friend✅💯❗ bunches of 💖❤💖 to you n the family always n 🙏 we all have a prospering harvest this year 😘❗
Hi Nana!! What wonderful memories you have from growing up!! I really hope our kids look back and love this life and want to continue it as well!! I think at least some of them will. Thanks so much for always being here! ♥♥
I planted my cauliflower the other day by direct sow. The seed packets said not to plant cabbage or broccoli until after last frost which seems so odd to me. I am in the same zone here in Arkansas. I'll have to look into it again because I really want to plant more than cauliflower right now, but I don't want to lose what I plant from cold or heat.
LOL - isn't it funny we recognize our goats by the noise they make? Haha. Calamity. Love the name. I heard that onion sets are predetermined for size, so it is better to plant seeds. I'll be anxious to see how your onions turn out. I'll be direct sowing seeds. I haven't really had much luck with onions in the past.
I haven't heard that! Usually we get good 4 tol 5 inch onions with a few small ones in the crop. I've done onions from seed before and what happened was I got onions about the size of sets from it, I overwintered those inside and planted next year and THEN I got full size onions. I don't think that is what normally is supposed to happen. I think they can go from seed to full onion in one season. The number of leaves equates to the number of rings on the onion from what I've read!
Yes I would start them in pots and set them out when they are big enough to keep track of in the garden. But you basically just want plenty of time for the crown to develop and attract energy over the summer to have the best chance of surviving winter!
I’m a little behind with my starts, meaning smaller and not ready to go on the ground, but I’m so glad it worked out, we are getting about 5 days in the mid 20’s and that would have been bad! I’m saving my strawberries and planting it under cover and I might just leave that hot bed only for strawberries in the future because of that crazy possibility of bad weather at the end of February. My tomatoes and peppers are chilling in my very light pantry( I will be sharing that next week) I have a pantry but is full of other stuff, garden priorities right?😂 Leave it to my girls to kid in this kind of weather starting tomorrow 😂😂 hopefully not! In my experience the mulch can be big as long as it’s not mixed with the soil, also I’ve read is good to have all different sizes of mulch (wood chips specifically)because it breaks down only the smaller pieces without overwhelming the soil. When I watched the back to Eden documentary a guy that failed at it said that he mixed the wood chips with the soil, and I was like, NEVER NEVER 😂😂 We use a mix of different woods like Myrtle, Douglas fir and whatever else we have and I love how much it helps! I can’t wait to document the results this year. Thanks for sharing, now back to getting ready for the storms ⛈
Sure! You can email me photos if you like, usually by the time they get their first set of true leaves the plants need some kind of outside source of nutrition. If you used a typical seed starting mix these do not have any kind of fertilizers or anything to feed the plants, I would up-pot them into a potting soil, depending on how they look!

WOW that would be so bizarre but you know what, I'd not be super surprised!! This winter has been strange!!
I am pretty sure that was the year my dad got stuck on the interstate trying to leave Atlanta after the NASCAR race was postponed that weekend!
I love your spring planting!!!!!!!!!!!!!! woooooooooooooo! Thank you!
SO exciting!!! I need to really think about how many of each of the varieties I'm starting for the spring and summer garden!! A lot of them are best direct sown so there may not be too much to start, really! Which feels odd! ♥
I will have to check out that mulch!
It's cheap !!!

We are missing out on the coldest part of that storm system here!
Yay for planting ❤️

In 2020 we had a hard freeze May 5th!!! Over 2 weeks past our estimated last frost and it seemed to come out of nowhere! I'll never forget it LOL.
That's great knowledge on the beans. I will have to try that! ❤
Beans are the best, they are great at feeding everyone and everything!♡

No!! There's a night in the upper 30s coming up but the 14 day forecast seems really nice actually!!

I wish I could be outside planting but here in northern MN my garden is under a couple feet of snow yet 😫
That makes it hard!!! Hugs! ♥

I ran out of potting soil so I did that!!! The plants did seem to love it!
The Lord Bless your garden this year
In Jesus name
Amen❤️
Thank you!!! ♥♥
I'm so excited to see harvests!
Me too!♡♡
I'm itching to plant..but this is my rest year. Looks amazing
Have a restful rest year!♡♡♡
That's one issue about continental climates. Very short cool seasons.
I need suntraps to grow warm season crops. But cool season, no problem.
Brassicas are dome of our favorite vegetables to grow, I wish it was easier to grow them here!
We will be starting soon. This is a mild February so I hope we don’t get a surprise. We have seen light snow here in the middle of March but not often.
That's awesome!! It's super warm here today!!!

Your garden backdrop looks different with the new shed back there 😃
You noticed!! I like it much better than the trailer backdrop LOL. The shed needs window boxes or something on the back side!
2 minutes into the video I saw your broccoli and subscribed right away ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Welcome to the channel!! This was last year's garden but I've got broccoli going in this year too!
Spring is coming! 🥗🍆🥔🥦🥒🥕
Hi Addison! ❤
You can see Bentley on top of his clubhouse in the background too lol
@@SageandStoneHomestead I missed that. 🥰
♥️♥️♥️
Hi Tammy!! ♥
Oh my gosh! So exciting! Why do I live in a zone 3 😭
My heart hurts for you way up there!! Have you tried growing smaller plants inside over winter?
@@SageandStoneHomestead I have my houseplants but I haven’t done veggies over the winter inside. I have started my onions though! 🥳
I am new to gardening. So thanks for the video. Please tell me where you got the wooden spinner for the hole and what its called?
That's called a dibber and I got mine on etsy!
I have rhubarb seeds should I put them in now?
Yes I would start them in pots and set them out when they are big enough to keep track of in the garden. But you basically just want plenty of time for the crown to develop and attract energy over the summer to have the best chance of surviving winter!
Rhubarb is frost tender to a point. The seedlings should be protected from frost ♡

Any tips on starting brassicas from seed? I started some, but they do not look good.
Sure! You can email me photos if you like, usually by the time they get their first set of true leaves the plants need some kind of outside source of nutrition. I love it that you rarely use gloves. I prefer not to use them, myself.
I had them on for a second and took them off hahaha
