    Both Sullivan and Stewart Precalculus actually do have some challenging exercises, even though most are just plug and chug or routine.

      I agree. Both are excellent introductory texts which contain mostly ‘drill’ exercises which are essential for acquiring the vital mathematical skills needed for higher maths.

    Thank you for this review. I am re-learning math after many years away, so these reviews are helpful. I have the Lang book on my list, but I was lucky enough to find an older edition of the Sullivan book at a used book shop for $10! And it is spiral bound for easy maneuvering on my desk. Thank you so much for the recommendations!

    2 I'd recommend for the UK viewers are engineering maths by either Bird or Stroud. They do the foundation stuff as well as more advanced such as Laplace etc depending on which you get. Only really the more advanced statistics they are missing out on.
    Really good explanations, worked examples and answers

    This is the kind of math book review I've been waiting for. I'm glad to see reviews of elementary and intermediate algebra books. I found that at least some study of those helped me immensely in my college algebra course at school, especially elementary algebra. I have the 9th edition of Sullivan's. I bought it for 7.09 U.S.D. and that too saved me from bad grades on my assignments! I'll look into getting that book from Lang. Thanks for this vid 🙂
    Edit: It's Sullivan's Algebra and trig book that I bought, a used copy that helped get me through my math course.

    I don't know what it is about algebra & trig books but I have a special love for them because they teach the fundamentals which are vital in learning and understanding higher level math. Although I am now further along in my mathematical journey, I'm very fond of them and I still reference them when I wanna practice proving trig identities.

    My copy of Basic Mathematics actually just came in today, fresh from Springer. I did a full calculus series in college 20 years ago, but time has not been kind to my math skills and they have fallen embarrassingly low. Am hoping to work through first this and then Langs "Short Calculus" to get back up to snuff!

    Kudos to anyone who can write a great math text...especially one that is good for self study. Truly outstanding is one that is completely error free! I have encountered math texts with a few errors in them (usually 1st editions, but sometimes later ones as well). It happens, but can be frustrating...particularly if some answers in the back are wrong 🤦‍♂️

  • @Israel2.3.2
    @Israel2.3.2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I would recommend the textbooks of Leonhard Euler, in particular his Analysis of the Infinite which was the first calculus textbook.
    Reason 1: The style is lucid.
    Reason 2: The notation is essentially free of subscripts, this is cumbersome to experts but for the student it is very powerful because it teaches efficient "internal bookkeeping."
    Reason 3: It teaches research mindset. The material is often presented in the form of problems, Euler attacks these problems tirelessly, obtaining the most general solution to every problem given.
    Conclusion: This combination of lucidity, flexibility of notation, problem solving, computational complexity in the sense of applying algebraic laws for dozens upon dozens of lines, working with many variables simultaneously, and obtaining the most general solution to the given problem, all of these components work together to give the student a remarkable mathematical education.
    Edit: I should also recommend Euler's Algebra. I haven't studied this work but it is supposed to cover all of elementary algebra even covering topics like quadratic forms.

    I would argue that proofs is the way an adult should enter maths. Kids can’t really handle logic by the time they can they’ve already matured to the point that they can already do Calc.
    But logic will straighten out a lot of the falicies that people tend to fall into like (a+b)^2 = a^2 + b^2.

    • @mbogucki1
      @mbogucki1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a 30-something adult who gave up on math in grade 10 and now attempting to relearn I would like to inform you that your logic question might as well be Egyptian hieroglyphs.
      How does one enter math with this gibberish?

    • @FlaminTubbyToast
      @FlaminTubbyToast ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mbogucki1 beginner algebra and/or logic is a good place to start. Logic is probably slightly easier to get into as the text book isn’t nearly as expensive.
      But algebra also doesn’t assume you know much which is helpful in the beginning.

Wonder whether people actually go over all of the content. Cool video btw, keep it up! Btw I have noticed that on the cover of the elementary algebra book, there is that black label that says: "This work is protected by US copyright laws and is for instructors' use only" Does this mean it is illegal to purchase that version of that book as a student? Like obviously you won't probably be fined or sentenced to some jail time, but if a professor at college or university saw you to use this book, whould he consider it as cheating and whould he "take some action". I am just curious :)

    In case it wasn’t clear to viewers, Jaime Escalante was a real Calculus teacher of notoriety at Garfield High. The aside on Escalante vis-a-vis Leithold could be misconstrued to conclude that Escalante was a fictional representation for the film.

    Why can’t high school math classes use inspiring textbooks like these? My sons’ textbooks are not only uninspiring, they’re also quite deficient in their presentation of both the concepts and illustrative examples.

    Textbooks in math are the foundation and fuel of your self-study, and without them you’re sooner or later lost unless you’re highly gifted and your IQ is beyond 160 so you can learn anything from just listening the lectures at university.

    There is also a lot of people that cannot learn math no matter what ...I remember teaching College Algebra ( at two different Universities ) and I remember that there were loads of students at both schools who were completely out to lunch...All math learning presupposes some intelligence ( and Work)...
