It’s all about us humans needing a sense of coherence. I really love the work of Aaron Antonovsky, basically it explains why we are so prone to believing in stuff that are clearly made up in order to achieve peace of mind and make sense of the world around us.
If a loved one dies it’s a part of gods plan, if a magician makes a car disappear its magic and so on.
Tuomas really nails it by writing “witchcraft filling your void”. It’s the shortest and most accurate summation of all of this.

    Hi Qofy, greetings from UK
I was told that this song was composed when the news headlines were all about atrocities carried out by some people in the Catholic church against children
My take is that this is a warning against organised religeon bending people to their will, and has nothing to do with searching for the truth of God. I may be entirely wrong.....
"You live for the days to come" - religion promises that you will be rewarded when you get to Heaven
"Your only truth, tribal poetry" - you can only rely on what you and your neighbours/family know to be truth, not what some institution tells you is the truth
"Witchcraft filling your void" - where we don't have answers, religeon offers us miracles to explain it
I read somewhere that Tuomas made mention in an interview that religeon is usually a matter of geography. If you are born in the Middle East you will be bought up to be a Muslim, in Italy you would be a Catholic, in India maybe a Hindu etc... Since these religeons have different views about God, how can they all be true?
In the Nightwish song "Last Ride Of The Day" there is a lyric......."What's God, if not the spark that started life?" I think that all people of faith or not can probably agree on this 😉

Correction has to be made ! Floor Jansen doesn't headspin !!!
Floor has 3 distinct styles. Head banging(straight forward, then back), hair whip(almost like cracking a bullwhip) and the Windmill(continuous 360 degree revolutions). Why Windmill? Well, it's more awesome and she is Dutch !!!!!
This song is against organized religions based on tribal religious texts, especially The Bible, it's not against personal faith in some Deity. However, one should realize that all those religious texts are & have been interpreted and used to justify unimaginable cruelties, persecution, discrimination etc., the worst being the idea that man is separate from nature & by some divine right above all other lifeforms, which explains the current almost catastrophic state of our planet.
lyrics are spot on - so many fractures in our world have a root in the fantasy that each of the religions/sects/whatever are THE ONE way. This song speaks, with anger, against the fact that we humans are destroying ourselves and this world based on a power structure that needs to be made obsolete - we ALL deserve better.
I LOVE this Song . Especially Floor's Freddie Mercury pose at the end . Speaking of Freddie ,....Floor's first band After Forever did a Cover of Queen's song "Who Wants To Live Forever " :

I was happy seeing you react to Nightwish! I'm a total newbie to symphonic metal, but I really like this band! I am consistently impressed by Floor's ability to sing "above" the intense instrumentals. The lyrics are fantastic as well. "Fear is a choice you embrace..." That is so profound. Fear, along with anger, insult, joy... are ALL examples of emotions we CHOOSE to feel. There may be an initial, 'automatic' reaction to something seen or heard, but we CHOOSE what to carry forward. Very intense lyrics! Great reaction, QoFy!!!!

Nightwish is a secular band. Tuomas has said that he has no problem with people who aren't. The 'fantasy' referred to in the song is religion. 'Robes of lust' refer to the pedophilia that was exposed. Great song. Enjoyed your breakdown. As a child my parents took me to church and so I became a believer. I'm 80 now and having been in a warzone for 18 months and seeing what has been going on in the world over the years, I lost that belief a long time ago. 😊🤘

The is a line in the Nightwish song "The Greatest Show on Earth" that deals with these same subject matter as "witchcraft filling your void". That line is "Enter the God of gaps". Both lines relate to the historical human tendency to create a God for anything that cannot be explained...eg Thor was created to give reason for the existence of thunder

So glad that you reacted to one of my Top 5 Nightwish songs. My understanding of "Witchcraft filling your void" is related to the need of going every sunday worship your lord with the idea of drinking is blood & eating is flesh as a sign of devotion.
The Devil & the Deep Dark Ocean (Live In Buenos Aires) and Shoemaker (Live Hellfest 2022) are the two others performances in my top 5.

Your analysis of the song was really great. My interpretation of the song is this: the song is a call not to blindly submit to any ideologies or worldviews, but to always turn on your mind yourself. This applies to religions but also to political ideologies. I would interpret "witchkraft fill in your void" to mean that we humans tend to label everything that we cannot explain rationally (void) as "magic" or "mystical power" (witchkraft).

Witchcraft filling your void is about finding something beyond reality to fill the space in your life. Also referred to in The Greatest Show on Earth as "The God of Gaps" where people need a God to fill the gap in their lives.

“Witchcraft fills your emptiness” to me means the emptiness within; the search for love; the sense of life; the answer to the question of who one actually is or should be is only answered and fulfilled through belief in a magical (divine) power instead through the search for real knowledge by questioning everything that one may not understand.

  • @jvalfin3359
    @jvalfin3359 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

I interpret "Witchcraft filling your void" as the role and purpose religion assigns to your life (disregarding what you want and think). I think they're hinting at the fact that people who lose their religion later in their lives struggle to find meaning and many times have an existential crisis because of it. And when they don't believe anymore, their life has a "void" that was previously occupied by their religion, which motivated them to endure hardship and being made to shovel thrash for the people at the top.
Just like "living only for the days to come", but once they no longer believe they will live forever, for what have they endured difficult times until now? Instead of setting goals in this life, all they ever had were goals in the next one that they no longer believe in.

When you have only one truth, that being religion, fed to you, from the time you come to this world, with your mother's milk, you have no other option but to fill the void inside with things that are deemed "witchcraft" by that same religion.

I saw an interview with Troy and Tuomas talking about not believing in God and organised religion. Troy actually said you are told about Santa and the tooth fairy and God, but for some reason as we get older some people still believe in God he says its, nonsense. He's English like me and I'm not saying there's no religion over here but if you compare the percentage of church goers to say the US our numbers are far lower, you sound English. This is in no way meant to insult people who believe in God I don't but respect other people that do. Your reactions are always funny informative and interesting. 🇬🇧

I’m not one to compare belief in God to Santa as it oversimplifies the system however, the analogy of growing out of it like the tales from our childhood is spot on. God is a phenomenon that had been used to explain things we didn’t understand and now the more we understand the less visible and relevant a God is to us anymore.
Some people keep it around as a crutch to deal with harsh realities of life. Fair enough. As long as the belief doesn’t cause them to harm themselves or people around them, they can have whatever belief they want. I thought I needed it until I tried to walk without it and I realised I didn’t need it at all in the first place.

Absolut wonderful analyses of a deeply true lyric. Lets not believe in fairy tales, no matter who comes around with it. And make sure your child is grown up in believing only in his own experience.

After that song and after listening to Richard Dawkins book, I steped out from church. Nobody shut tell you what you have to believe. Too many pepole died an still dying because of religion. Thats what I understand from this song.
Great song, great poetry from Tuomas, great reaction from you! Thank you!

Excellent reaction and a good analysis. your in the right area. Tuomas often writes songs only he can understand , he always leaves interpretation up to the individual.

The meaning of a necrocracy is a little different. North Korea is a necrocracy as Kim Il-sung iofficially is still the leader, and that same applies to many religions (so: dead people, not so much the deity itself)

@@QofyReacts the song is less about so called "religion"(s) being a fantasy, and more about how people look for stories and fantasies in general ,witchcraft( being a wide range of dark worship practices) tales ,etc to fill that "void" instead what they( the lyrics) perceive as the "better tales" being "science" and "nature"

The music and lyrics by Tuomas are one of s kind. Anyone can interpret the lyrics just any way they like. Which is probably why it's not easy to not like them.
Thanks for the best reaction I've seen for years.

You don't listen to Nightwish and remain stupid. They are going to drag you screaming and kicking towards education. Utter brilliance!
"Witchcraft filling your void" - my understanding would be disdain of people choosing to believe in religion which holds them down instead of standing tall and moving forwards.

My understanding is bound to the concept of "God of gaps" (saying that what science can't explain is due to a God, thus proving existence of God).
"Witchcraft filling your void" can be refered to the prayers/worship of a God, that can explain the 'voids' in science in its missing explanation of some concepts in the world.
Tuomas also did this reference in a more direct way in "The Greatest Show on Earth", also mentioning the fear :
      Gave birth to fantasy
      To idolatry
      To self-destructive weaponry
      Enter the God of gaps
      Deep within the past
      Atavistic dread of the hunted
