  • @TundraCH

Definitely agree the song could have been shorter, 10 mins around there would have been perfect. I see The Ocean as a cross between Btbam and Cult of luna, Post metal with progressive elements, sludgy as well. For a different type of song you should check out The Grand Inquisitor Ii: Roots & Locusts, a bit more straight forward and to the point, really highlights the vocalists vocals, half the length of 'Cretaceous' too. I'm ecstatic you check out the band though, they have become one of my favorite bands, they should be a lot bigger, very underrated.

Definitely agree that it felt the length, but still a banger. Devonian: Nascent off their last album would be a good follow up reaction; great melodies and IMO doesn't feel the length that it is.

  • @SuburbanErrorist

I love the ocean because each album is a period in time and every song is a buildup through it, so if you listen to all of their albums it's supposed to bring you through the creation of the earth until now so to speak when they are done, they might even go forward past us.
Also, check out she was the universe and firmament, best songs of theirs from just a musical stand point.
The one thing to know about this band is the album is the period of earth they are covering so each album will have their own sound and feel based off of how it was during this period, for example pelagial is a very relaxed album for a few songs as it goes deeper into the ocean depth and it builds.
What you get from this band is a theme each album for what the atmosphere would be and you can lose yourself in the music and close your eyes and imagine your own version which is why I love this band so much.

Black Crown Initiate - Holy Silence is my personal song of the year so far
For the Ocean Collective, I've been obsessed with them since i discovered their last part of this double album release called Phanerozoic II: Paleozoic. My personal favorite song is Permian: The Great Dying. It has bit less of the peak/valley style of their music and another awesome song is Isle Del Sol from their album Fluxion as it as an epic buildup that pays off so well. Rhyacian is an epic song like Jurassic | Cretaceous but the heavier parts are heavier and less sludgy overall. Really great band man.

I’d highly recommend you check out The Ocean Collective’s drummer, Paul Seidel’s, side project War From A Harlot’s Mouth. It’s heavy and technical, more of a technical death metal outfit, which judging by the music that tends to move you, you’ll enjoy it. Paul is a sick drummer, and a really amazing human, and has informed my playing in numerous ways over the years. I’m glad you FINALLY discovered his band, and I’d highly recommend the song Permian: The Great Dying. Little known fact about this band, they actually just recently had a newly discovered Marine fossil species named after them, which is so incredible! The Ophiacantha Oceani. So dope…. Amazing band and I think the deeper you dive, the more you’ll love them!
