    do yourself a favor, and listen to The Ocean-Pelagial album in its entirety. one 60 minute song about going deeper into the ocean/human mind. get heavier and deeper as the album goes along. one of the best albums from 2010-20.

      I followed your suggestion and listened to the entire thing 4 times. Needless to say, I enjoyed it very much and I'm certainly gonna buy it.
      Then I checked their rather intimidating back catalogue. Precambrian also had some solid tracks, but the older stuff doesn't come close to this album. The vocals are a big factor - I adore the clean vocals on Pelagial and miss their magic on the older projects.

    I second listening to Pelagic by them. It’s a brilliant album conceptually and musically. Highly recommend!!
    The Ocean are truly a creative band. Every album is so different yet you can tell it’s them. I think their “progressive elements” help them stand out among the post-metal genre. They are able to sit in a groove (like previous artists you’ve checked out) but do some other cool things as well.

    As i have said before, you should react to MASTODON.
    They have big influences from post metal like Neurosis , they have even collaborated with them.
    Mastodon have their own unique sound, with three different singers. I think they are something like Sludge/Stoner/Progressive metal.(basically a form of post metal)

      @@CriticalReactions Their newer stuff is more prog and rock focused (read: not as outright heavy). If you want something a bit heavier you'll need something from their first five albums. My personal favorites are "Sleeping Giant" and "Oblivion". From albums 3 (Blood Mountain) and 4 (Crack the Skye) respectively.

    • @wolverine669

      @@CriticalReactions Mastodon would be a good pick up. But, the further you go on their discography, more proggy it goes. Every album is great, but they've been evolving a lot during the years. I really need to make a trek through these guys' discography as I've liked everything I've heard so far. Though I definitely hear some post-metal in this, this is definitely more of a post/prog hybrid. It's a cool combination whatever genre you want to put it in. Was quite surprised to hear Jonas Renske from Katatonia in this, and in retrospect I can hear some Katatonia influence too, and some bits of Tool that you mentioned. Specifically, that entire guitar section from 13:00-14:00 had a very Tool vibe. The part after reminded me a lot of Mastodon. Man, the more I think about this the more complex the mixture becomes!

    As a side note I do think this is like having 2 songs together thus "Jurassic | Crataceous" that run into each other. The band's albums are known for being conceptual without being able to tell when song ends and another begins outside of noticing that the notes, rhythms, etc changing.... I guess all Post-Metal bands are known for this.

The linked video is a 1 hour performance, tracks to react to id probably go for are "Spitting on Stones", "Seven Veils", "Gilding The Void", "79Au" and "The Sculptor" with "The Sculptor" probably being my favourite. Love your channel, you dont shy away from obscure stuff that doenst have 100million views, keep it up :)

      Silly me, I forgot to mention the Band's name, It's "The Burden Remains" and the performance in question is a live performance of their entire 2017 album "Touchstone"

    Heh. They're designated as "Progressive Metal" by themselves and their label. I didn't think they were post metal at all. I really did like it. Did anyone else get hella "Thrice" vibes from this? Like "Vhessiu" era? I mean that's a compliment, as I friggin love Thrice.

      ratyourmusic.com lists them as "Atmospheric Sludge Metal, Progressive Metal, Sludge Metal, Post-Metal, Post-Rock, Metalcore". I think that's usually suggestions that are voted on by the community. But different genres may come from different albums, I guess.

      Thrice sounds familiar but I can't place it. Did they do that elemental concept with the four EPs?

      @jonathanolson1185 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CriticalReactions yup! I know I've heard you list off your music tastes before and I wouldn't be surprised if Thrice was on that list! That was one of their later albums (still very good! I loved the concept as well) but Vhessiu was an earlier album.

    This was a step up from the rest of the week and definitely made me think of Tool. Not saying that's an overly good thing, but better.

      Charles Murphy I agree this is definitely a step up. Lol
      It was different gears like TOOL but TOOL is on a totally different level. That's my opinion.Kinda long, but I'm glad this has been introduced to me.

      Mari Sanchez I agree, I tend to think Tool drags things out too long but yes they are on a whole different plane.

    This is post metal? This sounds very different to the other stuff. Doesn't have the same energy or feel. The whole genre thing is probably taken too seriously.

    • @Penz0id

      They were more sludgy post-metal in their early days but now they're very progressive and post- is only part of their sound

    • @mdd47
      @mdd47 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are still post-metal in the same way that BTBAM is still metalcore/mathcore, which is barely. It's there at times, under the surface, but they've built so many layers on top of that base sound over the years it's almost impossible to see it anymore.

    The drummer is amazing on this one, though I am not a fan of the snare sound they've used. Sounds like a flat bucket. But the music was good and melodic.

      @@CriticalReactions On second reading yeah maybe a bit much. It's just that the genres of music I like; math rock, jazz, prog rock, prog metal, some classical music, tend to be very much the antithesis for Black metal,Doom metal or post or sludge or stoner subgenres. So far every time I've liked a band from those genres it has turned out to be something purists don't consider truly belonging to the genre or is explicitly somewhat of a fusion experiment. Throughout this week I was basically mirroring your first listen to tool where every cool idea felt like it was around 2 minutes too long. However, I have a feeling post rock will be more palatable. Also I think I need to sleep.......maybe it's time to play some post metal.

    Precambrian is a better album, IMO and more avant garde. But their newer stuff is probably more accessible and a better way to jump into them.
