    This is the first chainsaw that my Papa(my father's dad) bought for my Dad to use around the farm. Really realllllly wish my brother wouldn't have sold it for alcohol drinking money.... Was an amazing saw. Not to mention it was also the first real chainsaw my dad's father bought for him back in the 80's. So not only just vintage, and extremely effective, but also very sentimental.

    I have same exact saw. My dad bought it new in 1985, the year I was born. Now he passed it on to me. I love it!

    Thanks Charlie
    I bought one back in 85, brand new for my dad,
    We put a ton of hours on it. A lot of good memories in it.
    Just dug it out of garage this weekend, gonna clean her up and see how she’s doin.
    Super excited, even moreso that I stumbled across you guys.
    I’ll try to take some pics and send, JB

    I have one of these, that I bought in 1990. It’s in like new condition. I run a 20” bar. Yesterday I was cutting 20” diameter oak, and it pulls that bar strong, with a sharp chain. One of the best saws made. I also have a 16” bar and chains for it. Better than the new plastic junk.

    Mine is about a 1982 just used it yesterday felling pine trees. Yours is museum quality nice. Similar case cracks, at the bottom.......came new with a hand file, wedge, bar channel clearing tool, and the lug wrench. My dad started me on this saw and used it ever since I was 13 with great results. Stihl does not make saws like this anymore.
    Using this saw with a new chain is incredible.
    One thing is people need to paint your name and address on the bottom of all your saws when they are sent in for service. A tech said he "lost" my 028 when I turned it in and could not find it. My name painted on the bottom figured out that situation quickly.

    i bought this same saw in 1983 and i had a Cub Cadet tractor and was out in the woods cutting some trees and it started to down pour so i just tossed the saw under the tractor and ran back to the house and somehow i guess one thing lead to another and the saw and tractor stayed there for 5 years and then i totally forgot about where i last used it and i then swore some one stole the saw and tractor , well one day i was out in the woods and saw a patch of yellow and it was the tractor all grown over and i managed to get the saw and believe it or not it still looked almost new and it started right up on like the 5th pull , great little saw , i remember i only bought it because i loved the color of the saw

    Thanks for the video. How many variations of the crank case were there, I have an original type I from w. Germany, which is wider than a type II from Germany, and an 028 from Virginia Beach, which sucks as compared to the ones from Europe. Just for the audience, not all parts can be mixed and matched, the top covers are wider on some than others, the two top handles on these saws shown, are also different widths. Although many of us are aware of the 42, 44, and 46 MM piston sizes, many don't know about the chasis width, and what-fits-what on these critters, as I'm finding out the hard way. I have reason to believe that the starter assembly outer cover is different also. Any info you can provide would be a big BIG help. Thanks again.

      Good question I think there's 4, but I'm not 100% sure I can only go on most of the model versions I serviced. There's a 028 woodboss, 028 AV, 028 AV woodboss, 028 Super

    • @robertskilton9295
      @robertskilton9295 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A lot of crankcase variations were to do with the types of ignition used at various stages of the 028 model life. Starter side was whether it used a fairbanks morse system of on later models the pawl style starters. If you think 4 is bad, wait till you dig into 041s n 051s!

    Have and oil leak from the bottom any ideas

    • @CharlieMack
      @CharlieMack  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is the leak from storing the saw for a while. Stihl chainsaw will build pressure in the oil tank, which will cause the oil to force its way out. So if you're storing the saw for a period of time, might want to drain the tank?

    • @daverush8064
      @daverush8064 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They have a pressure breather outside of the gas tank. Unscrew the cap covering the air filter look lower left you will see a nipple. There should be a hose attached to it with two small all thread screws. One at the end and one just after the nipple. This keeps pressure in the tank with out this pressure you will run out of tune. And leak every time you tilt the saw

      leaking fuel or oil ?

    • @robertskilton9295
      @robertskilton9295 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fuel tanks dont have pressure. The vent is there to keep the tank at atmospheric pressure so the carb is able to draw up fuel properly. If the tank has a vacuum in it then eventually the carb will not be able to overcome that vacuum n wont draw fuel up coz it is not strong enough
