1 hour in, no micropops:) I sincerely hope that's the end of that issue! (I believe it only affected a small portion of owners).
Sonics: 1.8 is what I hoped 1.5 would be. Tonal balance is much better. The upper and lower mids have come out to play again, but not as silly as 1.3. The bass has evened out from 50hz to 200hz.
Basically vocals sound more natural which is the main thing😊
Fair play to Denafrips for maintaining support for their devices.
EDIT: Tested for many hours now with 44, 48, 88, 96 & 192khz tracks. No issues!

After 3 hours of listening I clearly notice an improvement in the midbass, lower midrange in my system. There is more body, more flesh.
    Very happy with this update.

Actually all are right here. It takes a bit of spaciousness and final zing in the details, but it improves the vocals vastly. Result is like I have almost real singer in the room when playing some of my reference songs. I believe they improved bass, mid bass and mids with this firmware. Also there is no sibilance on the spitting sounds which they irritate me with some not so well recorded songs previously. Usually female vocals. Very nice and smooth to listen too. Coz of that it outweighs for me as I prefer more flesh on the bones towards the ultra resolution details. Now I also switched from NOS to OS (slow filter) when listening. This game me back some details and it is a right balance for my taste. Tested on Gryphon Callisto 2200, Magnepan LRS+, IsoTek Aquarious Evo3, REL B2, Cardas and Nordost cables, using XLR connection.

New firmware feels like the best of both previous firmwears! Its got the benefits of 1.5/2 while maintaining the natural sound of the original. I love it and will stick with this version.

Update is up and running. Had no issues previously so i am just seing how it sounds. But first i have to let it run for two weeks. So far it aint bad! Again thanks to @vinshine for giving us secondhand owners the opportunity for the firmware upgrade, appreciated!!

Have had to listen a lot but my personal conclusion would be to be wanting to return to the first 12th upgrade. The low end is less present in this latest version and music therefore has a lack of depth l. Again my personal experience. Nonetheless these updates really do something with this already incredible DAC so keep up the good work. Soon i will upgrade to the Pontus 2. The Ares 2 totally sold me over and i am lost in his hold on me. So i cant control myself not to look at the horizon.

As of July 2023, there are two newer versions of firmware for Ares II (i.e. v1.6 & v1.8). Classical is the genre that I listen most. With v1.8, instruments and vocals come through my system with less body comparing with that of v1.0. v1.8 trebles have less energy than that of v1.6, but still it has more than my liking. Now since the new firmwares are available, give them a try to see if they suit your taste. As for me, I'm back to v1.0 as I prefer the tonality of the original.

I did the update from the original Ares II to the 1.6. Great!
Now did the update 2 weeks ago to the 1.8. For me more flat and narrow sound stage. So just did the 1.6 again. And I ‘m in Audio heaven again. ❤

Updated the Ares II with EP4CE6F chip yesterday. That was pretty scary because the flashing process took 7 minutes - and not max. 5 minutes as mentioned! I feared I bricked the DAC and needed an extra cigarette. Okay, everything turned out just fine, 1.3 now is installed. Now I hope that the occasional micropops/glitches are gone. Because so far the Ares II and my Audiolab 9000 CDT transport didn't get along so good (connected via coax). Cheers.

  • @twenty4seven368

Interesting that the previous firmware v1.6 had more detail but lacked body. I had to compensate and add lower end body by using a Schiit Loki. Now with the 1.8 firmware, it solved it. I also noticed a slightly wider soundstage. Very happy with the firmware update.

    • @lazzzzze1
      @lazzzzze1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I had to turn my treble down quite a bit on v1.6, and it still had a mild harshness, as well as notch up the bass. Tone controls are back to normal with v1.8.

You mean what Firmware you have? You need to have USB drivers installed and then go down to lower right corner of the Windows and click on the icon Denafrips Co. Ltd. USB Audio Device Control Panel and under info you will find Product. Last designation specifies the firmware version. In my case E1.3 which means it is version 1.3 for Denafrips Ares II.
