Its just so frustrating to know that this guy actually composed and played this song live in bars when he was what? 20? 21? And remember that this is just a random recording at some random bar,, he can play like this anywhere, anytime and even back then 100% perfection.
This is actually the kind of sound i was hoping he'd go for in his next album. Keep that soulful vibe he had in continuum, but still with a pop sensibility. I vote this one to be on the new album! Anyone else?
i think it's important for a musician to be ever evolving. it's important for any old person, but certainly someone in the limelight. i'm willing to follow John Mayer where ever he goes musically. His music is to personal to forget and to fucking awesome to not be loved.
God, I used to listen to this song all the time. Haven't heard it in like three years. One of the hardest on guitar, out of Mayer's songs... at least for a 'strummer' like myself.
Love the MJ-like chords in this! Can hear the influence and it's so good...Needs to just release a B-sides album, of just him and a guitar...nothing else.
I think we all know that John is going to leave the Born and Raised phase, but the real question is where is he going? He hasn't stayed fixated on one musical style for more than one album yet. With his current stance he might do more acoustic stuff but I don't think like Room for Squares. It'll be interesting though.
I love this song. The breakdown at the end, and when he kind of hums/scats a melody around 4: 28 is my favorite part. This is the John Mayer I love. Sucker. No Such Thing (acoustic version from Inside Wants Out, Room For Squares version was awful in comparison), Why Georgia, St. Patrick's Day.. incredible music. The only song after that that felt like old John, to me, was Daughters. I wish he'd go back to his roots and play music like this. It was beautiful.
thanks for posting this one up! I am LOVING this song! Ugh, when is Battle Studies coming out?! I'm dying! haha. Been spending too much money to go to every show, appearance and what not he's been in for the past two years in LA! My wallet hurts.
I'd definitely vote for it - but I wouldn't bet on it. It's an older song of his. Back during his Eddie's Attic days... One of my favorites ever though
@missprissm. He says "can I have a little less vocal in the monitor, I can tell already" telling the sound guy to lower the volume of his vocal mic so he can hear the guitar better
@marron93 Yepp, He got that Granuloma on his Pharynx, or was it his Larynx? It was either his throat or his actual Voice Box, which would be Larynx. All "ynx's" aside, it sucks huge Scrotum that hes MIA right now. I was so hyped to have the album come out in October; I saw him & Keith Urban at the Tiger Jam in April & that ruled so I was so excited! Now I'm just bummed that he's on IR haha; but I could totally hear the development of it, really sad. Oh well, Born & Raised will be all the better!
So I figured out how to play this, including some of the improv but I'd kinda like to make it my own. Does anyone with a little more jazz theory know what kind of scales/arpeggios He's using to improv? Thanks
@eWilliamCardenas how could you say he uses autotune when, he sounds the same singing into a video camera, autotune is an effect procesor to correct pitch, check out some vids where he is singing with out a microphone and it will sound the same. no autotune
I desperately NEED this song in a decent quality, for fuck's sake !! what can one do to make John record this in a studio or smthg !! i don't even know how to make a song's quality better, anyone of u guys has a clue how to do that?
"My name is John and I'm here to play some music for you, and sing some words over that music."
If only it were that easy!!
How could you even carry on "small talk" during this genius... These people didn't understand what they were eating their steak to.
Tip345 I know right? I'm always amazed that they don't recognize what they are hearing is special
Indeed.

Born and Raised has some phenomenal songs... Some of his best writing.
i think it's important for a musician to be ever evolving. it's important for any old person, but certainly someone in the limelight. i'm willing to follow John Mayer where ever he goes musically. His music is to personal to forget and to fucking awesome to not be loved.

Haven't heard it in like three years.
One of the hardest on guitar, out of Mayer's songs... at least for a 'strummer' like myself.
That is fantastic...
Zartimus I like where this is going....
Hah.. Just uploading the tutorial now.
Agreed. Jm unplugged - what could be better? I also love it when he picks other people's random songs and does them a billion times better - always.
John used to really love those major 9 chords.
2020 is a blessed year all because of him.
I would marry both him and his music. I wouldn't doubt for a second:) The greatest musician alive!
Damn...he was so NICEEEEEEEEEEEE!
He need to release this stuff.
Never heard this before. What a beautiful song! But everything JM writes is beautiful, n'est-ce pas? Thanks for sharing this StopThisTrain!
Love the MJ-like chords in this! Can hear the influence and it's so good...Needs to just release a B-sides album, of just him and a guitar...nothing else.
haha. agreed! I'm so glad that someone who has REAL talent is so popular =] I never get tired of him
i love this song. one of my all-time favorites. (which, of course, means i never get to hear him play it live). so thank you, thank you, thank you.
thanks so much for posting! had this track forever ago, hard to find again
GREAT SONG!! My favorite Mayer song

Geemoney1022 what do you think now
he definitely left born and raised behind 😂
sob rock is as different as it gets
love the scatting...it's only 9:21, but it feels like 1 o'clock in the morning. Only a few artists can make me feel that way

That guitar playing at the end definitely gives me neon vibes
One of my favorite songs ever
The 40 watt club in Athens, Georgia (U of Ga.) when it was still open.
I'd definitely vote for it - but I wouldn't bet on it. It's an older song of his. Back during his Eddie's Attic days...
One of my favorites ever though
wow, new JM favorite song for sure, I have to learn how to play that
wow it's really good, i think I had never heard this before.
great intro, great tune! go john!
You are so right!
BOSSA NOVA
Verryy Jazzyy. I love it! :)
omg, mine too!! :D i love them both! :D
reminds me "neon", great song.
shame it wasnt released
great songwriter...
id love it if he wrote songs like this now
what a great song!
i agree with kujofox... it's very jazz influenced!
crazy how many people aren't paying attention
Now this is the John I know and love... Does anybody know when his new album is going to come out?
mayer with a classical guitar?! sounds awesomeeee
4:00 sounds like the solo of neon from where the light is.
A lot of John's acoustic songs are surely influenced by brazilian bossa nova guitar style! And this is nice!
CHRIS!
@missprissm. He says "can I have a little less vocal in the monitor, I can tell already" telling the sound guy to lower the volume of his vocal mic so he can hear the guitar better
❤️❤️❤️🥰🎶
this really remembers Brasilian bossa nova
@wiseoldfish it was meant to be out at the end of October but got delayed. ive heard it's out some time next year :/
This song is baller as fuck.
yes crazy chords
@mayerfan93 ohmygosh I totally agree with that. stupid unreleased songs. they should all be out so mayer fans can have them.
@marron93 Yepp, He got that Granuloma on his Pharynx, or was it his Larynx? It was either his throat or his actual Voice Box, which would be Larynx. This is john
@mayerfan93 This is probably not at eddies attic, I have been there numerous time and peple dont talk during performances. Its the house rules.
omggg. I wanna marry him! Wait no. I don't wanna marry John Mayer. I wanna marry his music! If only that were humanly possible T_T
I wanna see john play this live ._.
@dougsusername really? Never heard him, maybe I shoul check it out
So I figured out how to play this, including some of the improv but I'd kinda like to make it my own. Does anyone with a little more jazz theory know what kind of scales/arpeggios He's using to improv? Thanks
@@fm111. ?????????????
omg the solo after 3:26.. :O
i like him
first song he ever wrote (well co-wrote)
When was this recorded? Does anyone know for sure?
I wish he'd get out of the media and concentrate on churning out more music. I mean, it's his life, but an album would balance things out, I think.
Man, thats exactly what am sayin......... John Mayer needs to go back to his old roots.
I hate how he has so many songs like this that are good and are not on his albums. And I can't listen to them on my ipod :(
why isnt this song on one of his albums....
what kind of martin is he using?
Please explain in detail....
Better than anything on Battle Studies.
I know its 10 years late, but edge of desire is just as good
assassin is awesome
@eWilliamCardenas how could you say he uses autotune when, he sounds the same singing into a video camera, autotune is an effect procesor to correct pitch, check out some vids where he is singing with out a microphone and it will sound the same. no autotune
The phrasing in the chorus is similar to "The Hurt"
@lucascopin No he just really really really likes Charlie Hunter.
oh btw, seems like this is an unreleased song from 1999.... :)
@missprissm a little less vocal in the monitor... i can tell all ready ( i believe)
@MrShiningbubblegum You should listen to Bossa Nova then... One kind of Brazilian music...
@Ccbroo true
I desperately NEED this song in a decent quality, for fuck's sake !! what can one do to make John record this in a studio or smthg !! i don't even know how to make a song's quality better, anyone of u guys has a clue how to do that?
0:20
@1979saxman go to tryjm.com there's full shows from 1999 and 2000. awesome stuff.
this music is so brazillian.. like djavan for example.
@surfer1211 legit assessment
ur right, there's a clearer version of this that's been recorded there, but the quality's still pretty shitty :/
"youtube to mp3"
God, why don't people stop talking!! Show some decency!!!
CAZUZA might have influenced him.
@davidach I want to marry this comment!
born and raised songs are shit compared to this unreleased masterpiece...just saying.
