this made me so, so happy. i was reading the book and celie realizing her sexuality due to shug is absolutely beautiful. shug first appears rude and cold, but this softness for celie is one of my favorite parts of this story.

I was blessed enough to see this run of The Color Purple back when it was on Broadway and it was truly a once in a lifetime experience for me! (I even got to see it while J Hud was still playing Shug. Though I wouldn’t have complained too much had I missed her because I also LOVE Ms. Heather Headley _and_ from the little bits that I’ve seen of her in the role, in a shock to absolutely NO ONE, she absolutely BODIED it!! lol.) Anyway, this isn’t normally the kind of song that I’d really be all that into. At least not on paper. While a love song/ballad can most _certainly_ be an incredible moment, they just don’t tend to be something I get all excited about. Having said that… *BIIIIIIITCH!!!!* This song is absolutely EVERYTHING!! I can distinctly remember sitting in that theatre, I had already been fully captured by what was taking place before me and was vibing well enough with the beginning of “What About Love”, yet I had no idea what I was about to experience! (Which was pretty damn silly of me considering all of the amazingness I had witnessed up until this point.) The moment Cynthia and Jennifer launched into those GORGEOUS harmonies on the very first, “What about TEARS…” I had instant goosebumps all over my body. And they did NOT go away until the song was completely over! It was incredible!! I’ve seen a handful of Broadway shows (Boy do I wish that I lived closer to NYC!) and hundreds of touring, local, college, high school, and just about every other form of production you can think of’s shows and the 2015 revival of The Color Purple is by far and way the most phenomenal piece of theatre I have *EVER* seen. If I could only use one word to describe it, that word would be “magic”. Not “magical”, straight up “MAGIC” as that is what it truly was. No other show/production has ever made me feel the things that The Color Purple did. Nor has a show/production made me feel things as intensely either! Seeing this show will forever be one of my fondest memories! (It also introduced me to one of the world’s most talented performers, Cynthia Erivo. So that night was a HUGE win for me! lol. Anyway… yeah… I just LOVE this song/performance! (Daaaamn, I sure found a way to drag that sentiment out!! lol. I blame my “computer doobie”, aka weed pen, for that!! lol.)
One of the greatest privileges of my life was travelling to nyc to see these two in this show. I will never forget it..every time I have a sad thought..I just come on TH-cam and watch clips of the show and say..I saw this..live 🙌 and I just cry with happy tears.
I’m still upset I didn’t get to see this live 😞 seeing Hamilton finally making it to Disney+ I’m hoping one day they will put out this version of The Color Purple 🔥

Agreed, I prefer Cynthia and Heathers performance overall but when it comes to portraying Celie and Shugs relationship specifically, no one has come close to Angela and Fantasia. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a directors decision to make them less affectionate with each other for whatever reason, bc all the tender moments between them are much more toned down in rendition’s since Fantasia’s

Jennifer is a masterful singer but she is not a good actress. As a masterful actor you have to find the truth in the voice AND the body… her body is stiff on stage. Her singing has the emotion but she isn’t trained enough to access the truth in her body or her speaking voice. That’s why she was overlooked by the Tonys. Because Shug is easily an awards-bait role… and she did not deliver at the highest quality of a Bway actress.
