Minor detail, but one that I appreciate a lot: Thank you for using plain cards in your deck lists. It's a lot easier for me recognize the cards to build for myself, since I don't have most of the special illustrations.
I'm actually really impressed with the level of balance that was introduced with the mini expansion. I was a little worried about Celebi, but that trend diminished pretty quickly and made way for a lot of cool new deck builds, along with a revitalization of some lesser decks from the first expansion. The dominance of Mewtwo and Misty are still a bit of a problem, but the meta rotation has been consistently exciting. I hope (and expect) things will only get better, but I'm really happy with the variety so far.
Having swapped to playing the galvantula pikachu version a week or so ago, it absolutely has staying power. 2 zapados always felt awkward when drawn together, so I think it's natural we see people moving away from it especially with tauros creeping upwards. As Arbok showed in GA, the ability to prevent retreats is incredibly powerful, especially when combined with a deck that naturally wants 2 sabrina. having a backup aggressive attacker when pikachu is hiding can win games when your key piece is missing, and the way joltik/gavlantula lines up into the mythical birds, froakie, farfetched, and staryu is an additional factor.
I've been having some huge success with the Starmie/Lumineon deck. It can really punch above its weight class against the more established meta decks. The low retreat costs deny your opponent any meaningful points and Lumineon can snipe a badly hurt EX pokemon from the bench with relative ease. Loads of fun so far
Starmie/lum is proby favorite deck next to blain deck with salaz. Do you run just starmie lum? Iv been running with 2 pyuku in my deck, but have been experimenting with variations.
@@yetiinthebeddy1368 I'm only running Starmie and Lumineon at the moment, though I really like the idea of running Farfetch'd to help round out the team a bit. As far as other options go, I could totally see a copy of Tauros or Mew EX being interesting options to explore. Once you get your bench set up, the low retreat costs would probably make it easy to build up a bulky threat with the energy you're not using.
I'm also an enjoyer of the starmie/lumineon combo. In my version I run 1 eevee and 2 new vaporeon. It combines perfectly with the free retreat costs and allows for sneaky 90 damage attacks out of nowhere
Been running Starmie/Lumineon with Vaporeon as the 3rd and no Misty. The free retreats combined with washout makes the deck feel absurdly flexible and hard to play around. That being said I have lost quite a few games to being stuck on Eevee as my starting basic. Once in a blue moon Eevee will do monster damage and it's hilarious.
Llving these meta reports, helped me find my favorite deck in the format with the strong fighting core of hitmonlee and marshadow, keep these up they are amazing
Loving how the meta is changing. Blastiose and Char storming in seems great. Galvantula seems like good tech and I myself thought Volcarona would be best paired with Motres and Arcanine. But being a secondary attacker in Charizard decks makes alot of sense.
Thanks Jeff for another in-depth video!! Pikachu ex is the most consistent for me, whether I run with galvantula or electrode, or even with jolteon I’m still getting that 50% win rate.
5:01 I had already put this Volcarona / Char variant together before seeing this video - once I got my hands on a second Moltres EX from the Premium Pass Promo drop. I only have one copy of Arcanine EX so building the Larvesta line seemed a natural second best option. With one variation - I've been running one Sabrina in place of an X-Speed. It's been relatively successful for me! One thing I've really appreciated is the hugh HP pool of Volcarona - it often is able to tank a hut or two while dealing versatile and meaningful damage across the board while only giving up a single prize point in return - thus I prioritize landing at least four energy on it with Moltres before swappiig it in to guarantee i get at least two hits with it.
I've found a lot of success with Moltres/Charizard/Arcanine. Plays perfectly into Celebi or Gyarados, as well as any other stall deck that lets be accumulate energy for my bench. Plus, being able to one-shot Hitmonlee and Marshadow with Moltes + Giovanni allows me to put pressure on my opponent if they're running those decks. It honestly feels like the most versatile meta deck, along with Pika/Zapdos/Raichu, in Pocket right now.
Yeah I think running Gio is key for the Charcanine decks, not only for what you mentioned but also for letting Arcanine 1 shot opposing Mews which can can otherwise give us a lot of trouble.
@@Matthewrentsi guess my point is that it counters all of the other meta decks super well without having any real weakness. If you draw well and flip moderately well, it’s pretty much unbeatable.
@@jordanvespa720 Yup. There have been several games where I take out something with Charizard, get countered with Mew, and then take out the mew with Arcanine + Giovanni. It's great.
As an avid Charizard player pre Mythical Island, Sizzlepede + Cinderscorch has always felt better than Growlithe + Arcanine EX. There primary advantage to Arca is 1 energy less to attack with as well as not losing 1 energy to attack. But Cinderpede's 130 attack means you don't need to run Giovanni at all as there are very few times you need an extra 10 damage anywhere as Cinderpede doesn't go in unless it's good or you don't have anything else to put in. I typically ran just 1 copy of each. Mew EX is hard to beat for this deck though. Volca seems terrible. You don't have extra energy to be spending like that imo
Will have to sift through and see if I can find the volcarona set, really interested to your take once you play it a bit (it looks kinda awful on paper, but there's a bunch of little details that I liked including Volc being pretty chonky, both as a basic and stage 1, the 80 dmg lines up pretty well with some common bench pokemon, and the moltres high-rolls when you get to put Volc up with 4 energy on T4 or 5 are frequently Articuno-Misty style runaways). Wanting to use the basic attack sometimes vs. when to evolve make it one of my favorites to play from the new set.
Im not surprised that pikachu EX is adopting more proactive gameplans in dedenne's place. Needing to flip heads and potentially giving a point for only 10 damage felt really bad Even if Galvantula faints from its low hp, its easy for pikachu to get revenge. And locking legendary birds in for 2 points is really nice
Hey jeff love the content, I've recently had success with a deck containing Dragonite!! I just used you druddigon tauros mew ex core that was good enough to win ganes even running 6 bricks in the form of the Dragonite line.
I really need to look into these tournaments, the analysis videos be getting me hyped! Still a main of Charizard/Moltres/Extra. The Volcarona build is to mimic what Pikachu EX & FightingLee are able to do which is sniping Magikarp as fast as possible. The major difference is that those decks do not have to worry about turbo energy onto Volcarona before Magikarp evolves and depleting said energy. The rotating meta is exactly what i was expecting in this game before Set 2. There's a lot of cards and combinations to experiment with.
@@tatsukinomiya volcarona might get karp snipes on rare occasion, but I'd wager if it's helping in the matchup it's actually because of sniping frogadier before it gets to Greninja. Which still requires good luck and/or the opponent not curving straight to Greninja. Zard is already the Gyarados answer in that deck
@drumstep9135 Correct that's also a factor. The line up, on some good mana curve + flips + draws, could all answer the deck and dismantle it. It's pretty cool
I’m so glad volcarona charizard is getting played. I’ve been saying since the drop that it slots in perfectly for arcanine as it handles stalling/stage 3 decks better than arcanine does. It also can knock out gyrados with 2 gios which can be massive
Haven't tried the CharizardEx\Volcarona Deck yet. Gonna have to give it a try. Been trying out different things with my Pika Ex because it seemed to have potential. Too bad I didn't put 2 and 2 together, I already had a Galvantula Raichu deck that was fairly potent when getting good hands &/or good matchups. Galvantula is very effective against Celebi
I've honestly been having a lot of troll fun with a sleep deck. It's luck based but so satisfying when you stop Celibi/Gyarados/Fighting decks in their tracks and slowly chip away at them.
I like Volcarona because even if you don't get to kill the basics, it will deal 80 damage, leaving chars and gyaras ready to go down in one hit from your main hitters.
I wonder hiw many charizard decks run a single charmander, I find it best since while yiu might sometimes build 2 arcanines for 6 energy that dies not get consumed you never build 2 Zard, so that is my preference. Againts celebi and pika you usually go arcanine, and againts m2 and Gyarados you need 1 Zard.
I'm fairly confident it was a choice but I really appreciate the conscientious effort to have a calmer voice! Makes it so I don't have to lower the volume of my phone every couple of seconds hahah. Loved the video, keep it up dude!
I’m surprised the Gyarados deck remains unchanged after all this time. I found mine was significantly better when I dropped one Leaf for Blue. Blue lets you put karp down even if they have zebstrika or hitmonlee as long as you can evolve it next turn. Without him there were many games where I just simply would not have been able to play Gyarados at all.
i think for zebstrika or electabuzz is easy predicted, because they need to evolve or stack energy, but for the hitmonlee is depend on your enemy choice, sometimes they put the hitmonlee on the bench, but sometimes they keep hitmonlee on the hand until your drop karp on your bench
lol, so you need to use blue all the time? Most of the ways to play the Gyarados deck require stall energy on the karp/Gyarados, for conditions such as putting the karp on the bench when you have Gyarados and blue in your hand, this is a very rare condition due to the rng of this game. that's the problem, you won't be able to use blue if you don't know if the enemy has hitmonlee in hand or not while you need to put karp to stall energy
The other thing to consider is a lot of the time players will fill their bench, at that point you know you’re safe from hitmonlee coming in. It is situational, of course it is, but ultimately it’s bette to hold Karp until you find Blue and then get him down safely than being in a situation where you can never play him. It’s certainly more valuable in my eyes than a second copy of leaf.
have seen jeff play blastoise before but im wondering does he use blastoise as a hard to OHKO ex that swings quickly with ohko potential with misty? wanting to try the deck but i try to play it as if misty will never flip heads lol.
How do people feel about Mythical Slab in Psychic Decks. The featured list only has 9 pokemon for it to find. So its a dead card more than half the time. I've been having way more success cutting it for additional utility/more varied attackers.
The toggle energy is really interesting cuz I tried the greninja/fighting deck and hit 5 water in a row and I wanted to die as I saw their magikarp set 3 turns unanswered lol. Sticking to fighting only on ladder but tournamnet it makes more sense
Just to be sure: Theree isn't a tournament option in the game or something and these tournaments are privately organized and take place in private lobbies, right? Or is there a feature in the game I'm unaware of?
I tested a similar Volcorona list alongside Zard/Tres. And found the 3 energy discard 2 was just too much. If it was 3 discard 1 or even 2 discard 2 it would be good. But it's way too much energy commitment. I will say that 90% of the time it's a guaranteed KO since your opponent will normally have atleast one 80hp or less Pokemon. Larvesta also sucks needing two energies to attack and two to retreat.
I really wish volc was a 2 energy discard 2. That would open it up to be playable as a lead without Moltres being an 80 HP basic that on curve knocks out most relevant backline stage 1s before they have a chance to hit stage 2, which is all you really need it to do and imo worth throwing the energy away in the majority of situations. At 3 it requires Moltres and therefore leaf/x-speed + coin luck to do that.
Jeff mentioned toggling Water energy on and off depending on the matchup when discussing the Greninja + Fighting deck. I wonder whether Toggling on Fire energy could help the Gyarados deck against bad matchups (like Hitmonlee) to enable attacking with the Druddigon
the gren fighting list actually only plays fighting energy. also you're not allowed to switch energies in current bigger events cause it counts as changing your deck (info from judges)
I think one upside to the Volcarona could be not been a EX, but again in a deck where everything else is a EX does that really matter two much anyway as you can still only afford 2X knock outs, unless you are willing to play fast and loose with one of your chameleons.
I can't really see what Volcarona does for Charizard, ngl. Volcarona and Arcanine makes a lot more sense to me since Volc can finish off what Arcanine starts. Maybe coming in with slash is a bigger deal for Charizards these days? Just seems way too passive and energy hungry.
In theory volcarona is great at one-shotting basically all relevant stage 1s before they draw the stage 2 (kirlia, frogadier, servine etc) for your first point and then zard can knock out their ex to win without ever being in danger itself. In practice i think volcarona is too slow to do that the majority of the time due to a 3 energy cost requiring Moltres with 2+ heads + leaf/x-speed just to not lose to the opponent having the stage 2 on curve. A four card combo to assemble by turn 2/3 that also requires a 50% Moltres flip. With 2 of those 4 cards required to be on turn 1 or 2 ( depending on first or second.
I think volcarona is gona need another kind of support that generates either more consistent energy than moltres does, or some kind of supporter that lowers energy cost for attacks before it really kicks off cuz discarding 2 feels like you gotta get v lucky woth early inferno dances to be able to afford it
Subjectively completely disagree. It is easily the most interesting to play of the best decks because it isn't setting up one linear attacker to try and win the game on its own.
@ maybe I don’t understand it well enough but it always just feels like the optimal play is to get pikachu going as fast as possible and when the first one dies, pop in the second one. I feel like I rarely find reasons to try to maneuver something around.
@@ofischial that is not remotely how the deck plays out in the hands of good players in competitive games. There is a lot of moving around and retreating correctly.

I really wish volc was a 2 energy discard 2. the gren fighting list actually only plays fighting energy. also you're not allowed to switch energies in current bigger events cause it counts as changing your deck (info from judges)
Those red decks are on the expert challenge decks ...
Where do you even get this data?

I don’t get what the piece of pie with no label is
Everything else.
I think one upside to the Volcarona could be not been a EX, but again in a deck where everything else is a EX does that really matter two much anyway as you can still only afford 2X knock outs, unless you are willing to play fast and loose with one of your chameleons.
Too much*** English has failed me today 😂😂
Has anyone tried the blastoise deck with a single Giovanni and Sabrina opposed to the double Gio?
Makes your Mewtwo and Celebi match ups markedly worse. Need that breakpoint
Anyone know where I can join a tournament?

@ cool thanks amigo. Appreciate the reports big fan
The insects are coming
Galvantula is my drag name
I’ve seen Chatot in all my queues why aren’t you covering them here?!
Because they get dumpstered on in tournaments and put up no results.
Chatot isnt consistent enough to be featured regularly in tournaments, much less make it to the later rounds
Chatot gives draw consistency at the cost of getting behind on energy and pressure/damage. It's not a good trade. It can also be played around.
its a gimmick deck that isnt viable competitively
I think volcarona is gona need another kind of support that generates either more consistent energy than moltres does, or some kind of supporter that lowers energy cost for attacks before it really kicks off cuz discarding 2 feels like you gotta get v lucky woth early inferno dances to be able to afford it
I’m here nice and early. Let’s go
No one plays pikachu because it’s boring
Subjectively completely disagree. It is easily the most interesting to play of the best decks because it isn't setting up one linear attacker to try and win the game on its own.
@ maybe I don’t understand it well enough but it always just feels like the optimal play is to get pikachu going as fast as possible and when the first one dies, pop in the second one. I feel like I rarely find reasons to try to maneuver something around.
@@ofischial that is not remotely how the deck plays out in the hands of good players in competitive games. There is a lot of moving around and retreating correctly.
My luck is all over the place only true meta deck I can run is celebi exxeggutor and superior. Those coin flips can be a nightmare or blessing. Still need an other moltress ex and charizard ex and arcanine ex…..
