While my Grampa did have a car on his farm in S/E Kentucky. He still did all his farm work behind his trusty plow horse Tony, he was plowing the field with Tony when he passed in the spring of 1971 at I believe it was 86 years old. The Sheriff said those Ole plow horses wouldn't stop until they got to the end of the field, Tony stopped when My Grampa dropped to the ground, didn't drag him a foot. My Grampa loved the mountains, loved his farm and his animals, loved his family, and loved God, I think that was his reward for a lifetime of his faith. I have Tony's bit and leather reins.
Thanks for a great video and God Bless!

That was a good one! My grandfather was born in 1906 and he used to tell me the tale of the first car he ever saw when he was 8 year old that came up the old wagon road and got stuck in the creek ford. He said my great grandfather, his dad had a couple big ol Belgians that they pulled the car out with and then the man took them for a ride. He said he kicked and cried and screamed the whole time he was so scared of that car.

I remember growing up in Northeast Alabama and my Grandpa hitching the ole mule to a plow and plowing the field. Me and Grandma would walk out there and bring him a drink of water and a wet rag to wipe his face with. Sometimes I think my Grandpa worked as hard handling that plow as the mule did to pull it. Thank you for the memories Mr. Donnie!

Thanks for bringing back memories of the less stressful times. I have listened to my father talk about having to back up some of those old roads around Lenior and Blowing Rock, N.C. because those old jalopys wouldn’t climb those those steep grades in low gear. He told me he would adjust those old mechanical brakes tighter in front and loosen the back. That way he could go down those icy roads and slam on the brakes and make the car spin in circles. Guess that was the old way of doing doughnuts. LOL!

Great photos of an era gone by. Ty.
I used to take care of a gentleman from Waycross, GA. He lived to be 103 yrs old. I loved his stories about the past. He talked about the first time he saw a motorcar. It belonged to the local doctor and the kids would run behind it. He described the hand crank and how it ran.
He was the son of a sharecropper so a car was definitely beyond his family's reach.
He was a hardworking man that worked the fields so his sisters could finish school. He never had much of a formal education but he was one the wisest men I've met in this life. With the help of his sisters, he taught himself how to read. He used to read the Bible everyday.
I'm not much of a religious person but he could get me to come to church with him.. He was proper and viewed the world with a simple and kind heart. He wasn't naive. Just not complicated.
I have immense respect for him to his day. They don't make men like that anymore. He meant a great deal to me.
    Bless William A. Strickland 🌸

Brought back some good memories of my mom talking about the farm she grew up on in central Wisconsin, they too had draft horse from about 1905 until the 1930s. One of her favorite stories was about some outlaw type neighbors whos sons worked in the big city and how suddenly newer cars would show up on their farm from time to time, I once visited that farm back about 1970 to talk to one of the sons by this time an elderly gentleman, I saw his machine shed and sure enough, it was filled with cars from the 40's and the 50's. Another great video and thanks for bringing back some great memories.

That first ol red tractor looks something like that ol tractor that dad made me disc, drag and plow our field with when I was 12 or 13 yrs old. Once it was starting to get dark and fire was belching out the stack and I thought it was on fire. I screamed and jumped off the tractor still rolling down the field!! Dad made me go catch up and jump back on it!! I was disking at the time!! Thank God I was able to jump on and drive it back to the barn without any damage to me or the tractor!!😅 I'm a 79 years old lady now and have so many memories of the good ol days that you help me remember!! Thanks so much Donnie for all the history and pictures of the past. Hope you will be able to keep finding more of your precious adventures to share with us!! Soon be Mushrooms huntin season! Hope you find some!! Till next time! God bless..❤🙏

I remember my grandpa who had a few horses over the years. However he had horses that no one wanted because of a missing eye or deaf in one ear. And he only rode on them when it was time to go to market or store. Or to pick us from a top of hill to bring us down to the valley. There were no roads as you said back then. Those were good days and I was only 10yrs old. Thks for letting me share.

Thanks for the memories I remember my grandmother telling me that back in 1904 they came from Tennessee to Wilkes nc and her mother put her in the back of a horse and wagon and it took several days to get here. And about people that traveling along would stop by and camp for the night. They also would drive turkeys to town for sale they would camp out for the night and the turkeys would roost in the trees. I remember a woman talking about her father talking a load of tanning bark to town for sale by wagon and it took him 2 days he slept under the wagon and came back the next day to day it takes about 30 minutes round trip. 😮 when my father was little in the 30s a man came around in his old pickup and took a bunch of people to church he stood outside on the running board and held on and went to church. I remember that my grandmother told me about her husband my grandfather used to go somewhere he would walk there and back he would go see his family across the mountain he would walk through the woods he knew short cuts to go there. And he would go in the woods to get what he called dry pine stumps and split them up and sell them in town for people to start fire with.. so many memories thanks for sharing these great videos God bless you 🙏

My grandma told me one day she had her driver's license, so I asked her why she didn't drive. She said cause she could only drive a car that had a stick for a steering wheel. I wish I could have ridin ' with her in that car. Oh how much fun we would have had. Thank you Donnie for the memories

Love that intro song. Thank you, your video adds to my appreciation of this subject. It's a shame isn't it? I have Amish friends who still use the hirse, thank goodness! When I was an art teacher, I taught a lesson on how the horse has been replaced by cars. I used examples of an artist, Deborah Butterfield, who used old car parts, wood, etc, to create life-size horse sculptures. Her social commentary is of great educational informative, too.

❤ I love watching your videos❤ my daddy use to talk about one of his first place cars 🚘 it was a Chevy can't really remember the year 55-56 but he said he was going to Middlesboro one day an it tore up on him, so he left it on the mountain there on Fonde side. I'd say it's been stripped by now. My daddy's been gone since 2020 and all of his stories he use to tell me and my brothers is well just memories now. I sure miss his stories of the olden times and growing up in Fonde ky. That's where we are all from. It use to be a coal camp back in the days. Keep posting videos like these Donnie. They're sure appreciated.
