I remember watching my Grandmother take a teaspoon of turpentine ... yes turpentine! She also crushed asprin and mixed it with lemon juice and put it on the rough patches that were on her elbows and heels. Tree sap for cuts, which actually does work. Nettle tea for arthritis and gout. How many of her remedies worked I have no idea but she swore by every one and lived until she was 97 and saw a Doctor maybe 3 times in her life. I miss her ✌

❤ The turpentine was ingested to kill internal parasites. I believe some people still do that remedy nowadays, but instead of taking it straight up, they soak sugar cubes in it and ingest it that way.

My husband and I were talking this past weekend about our ancestors and all the sacrifices they made to build this country. The hard times that this country was built on. If our ancestors could look a hundred years ahead they would be shocked and sad I think. I’m praying for our country and really appreciate this video that shows us how far we’ve come and how thankful we should be.

This was a extra good up load today Donnie. We just might have to know these herbal medicines, and we should learn as much as possible about ginseng , yellow root, Mullen, self heal, and blood root to name a few. It’s sad about these graves unmarked or no names on them, so people could know. Like you said the Lord knows where they are and who they are. Thank you, Mr. Laws, for all of your beautiful stories. Many of us, as adults, forget the importance of continuing to learn. The saying, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”, is attributed to the American philosopher George Santayana, and is very important to remember. Many of us forget that lesson. In your videos, you bring back to life, the importance of the lives of those who have gone before. Channels such as yours bring forth the history of our country and of those countries near and far. Thank you for your work. It’s greatly appreciated.

I have walked the Appalachian trail and walked or bicycled hundreds of miles through the small communities in West VA Tennesee and NC. Beautiful country.
The sad thing is people are so self absorbed and disrespectful now and with what is comming these same people will not survive. If you don't respect your life and those around you you will eventually find yourself alone.

I Seen your comment just after I had commented about how people are so cold these days and how I wish we had more people like these. They had compassion back then. These days people don’t care. I seen it last week when we took my two year old to the doctor bc he was sick. Just bc one nurse was having trouble swabbing my sons throat another one thought she wasn’t being fast enough and she was going to do it. I got between her and my child. No way was I letting someone like that near my sick child. Especially when I heard how cold she spoke about doing it. I could feel the frustration emanating from her. Me on the other hand I try to be nice to everyone. We need God again. God bless us all.

Today's world hasn't a clue about how to survive they're too busy with their phones, Uber eats, Starbucks, fighting and dividing. Our ancestors knew how to survive and yes some of them did work themselves to death. Work with the hands and build with your hands. Unfortunately disease comes through and we loose people and unfortunately in today's world there are doctors and big pharma that don't want us to get better because they won't make money of of us. This is truly a great video!

Hi Donnie, this is a good video on Appalachian illnesses and medical practices. While doing genealogy research. I found a Dr. Moses Clemons in Jackson, Kentucky. His mother was a Cherokee Indian medicine woman. She taught Moses about Cherokee medicine starting at age 11. When he grew up he started a medical practice in Jackson. He was unlicensed, but practiced Cherokee medicine. This was in the early to mid 1800's.

Mind w you these days it’s harder to get about but word travels fast and so do the dogs. So many of us have taught our families and well some folks run but the grandkids and family dogs surely have kept them the done their best sometimes even bringing the rocks back and giving it a blessing for those to continue resting on in peace. I was lucky to be born in a time and area where people took care of themselves. My Nana and my Dad taught me how to be self-sufficient. I used to follow all the farmers at the Co-op and the seed store. Lucky they thought I was cute and patiently answered my questions 😅. When I got older, I learned about the Spanish Flu and the other illnesses. When I began fishing the Blue Ridge, I’d often come across a little family plot. I sit quiet for a bit and move on. I found 2 plots right near my house. I started to clean one up, but the property owner asked me not to be on his land.
I really appreciate your bringing us these stories and keeping the memories of the hard working people who made our Great Country what it is today. Thank you Mr 16:42 Donnie for being one of those great Americans. I don’t mean to be posting so much-I’m in a remembering mood today!

Happy Sunday Mr Donnie & family! I am oftentimes amazed how our family survived through all the hard living and illnesses we grew up in! It was a hard life and a lot of folks didn’t make it. Which makes me thankful we are even here! Not only the hard living but the wars too! We all have so much to thank God for! Prayers for thanks, loving our neighbors, mercy, blessings and everyone struggling through our Lord and Savior!❤🙏❤️

Another great video of how hard it was on our ancestors and how they worked, lived, & died. Did Typhoid Mary know that she had this disease & was a carrier?? Some people are immune to a disease but can infect others. I’ve often wondered about that. Yes, seeing a baby or little child’s grave always makes my heart ache & I want to know who they are & how they died. You are so right on the fact that God knows each & every one who’s buried in these cemeteries. Blessings always! ❤️✝️

The older I get the more I think of my grandparents, both sets of grandparents as most did had cisterns never used for drinking only washing but I’m sure typhoid was spread that way. If I had a chest cold my grandma would make me a onion poultice and put it on my chest and I would stink for days not sure if it helped my chest but it opened up my sinuses. I have so many memories and stories I try to share with my children and grandkids once my generation is gone it’s lost.

How interesting. If our doctors, nurses, and alot of people in healthcare had to live and suffer like our ancestors they would have more compassion I believe. People are so cold these days. I see it every time someone in my little family has to go to the doctor. I’m not saying everyone is cold hearted. There’s sure some that care. But people are so self absorbed these days. I miss the loving caring people just as far back as my childhood. We need God again. Most everyone has strayed away and it shows. There’s still some good folks left though. I believe you’re one of them Mr Laws. God bless you.

My grandaddy, long gone, was an example of this although he was in Mitchell county Georgia. This started before WW1. He married his childhood sweetheart. The had a farm. She gave birth to a child about every year and a half. The first lived and when she got pregnant with her second, the first was just nine months old. She had the serious form of morning sickness and had to stop breast feeding because she was seriously dehydrated and the doctor was afraid she would die. She had to put the 9 month old on cows milk. Humans actually don't tolerate milk well until they are older. The baby died of the scours. Today we would say the baby was lactose intolerant and died from dehydration from diarrhea. This happened with their 3rd and 5th child. The sixth child was born two and half years after the 5th and thrived. They had three healthy children when she became pregnant with the seventh. At eight and a half months, both mother and baby died of what was then called "kidney poisoning", later called "toxemia", today known as eclampsia. His sister came to help when it was spring and Grandaddy had to get crops in so they would have food for the winter. By this time they had learned how to avoid the problems with plain milk. When the baby was about 4 months old and the crop had just really gotten past seedling stage there was a storm. It started to hail and everyone ran out to cover what they could. It was still chilly out so they put the baby on a pallet near the fire. It was asleep and they were only going out for a short time. When they got back, the baby had rolled and died in the fire. Granddady eventually did what men did back then and found a woman to marry because he couldn't farm and take care of young 'uns. His sister had married so she left. When Grandaddy remarried he had two children, a son and daughter. Shortly after he married the woman who would be my Granny, they were invited to visit some neighbors after church. The kids didn't want to go and since the grown ups were only going to be down the road, they le them stay home. The girl was taking a nap and the boy was on the porch watching a storm coming, sittin in a chair that he had leaned back against the wall. It was on two legs, they way boys do to this day and get fussed at for it to this day. When the storm was starting, Granny and Grandaddy were trying to get home. When they finally did they found lightening had struck the house and killed the boy. The girl was in a bed that was on castor that happened to be rubber. She slept through it.
My grandparents went on to have three healthy children. During the depression they lost two farms, one after the other. Grandaddy was able to get and keep a third only because he became a tobacco demonstrator. He was paid to go all over Georgia teaching farmers how to grow, harvest, cure and sell tobacco. People think it such an evil plant but it kept a lot of farm families from starvation.
My cousins and I have talked about this. I don't know how he kept going. I think grief would have consumed me pretty early on. Or not. As they say, that which does not kill you, hurts like hell.

I worked for the park service as a tractor mower operator and I could get of the tractor and walk around in the mountains when I wanted and there were old graves scattered all over them Mountains with nothing but a rock for a head stone. There were still a few old guys working for the park service that had been with the CC camp guys and they said that the government evicted the family’s but the would leave they said they would have to tear down there homes but they still wouldn’t leave they said it wasn’t nothing to see them standing at a old cook stove out in the woods cooking. I had the privilege of helping restore the old Johnson Farm at the peaks of otter and the old cook stove in it came from my wife’s grand parents house my wife had cooked on it before and there family’s were related. If you ever get the chance to go see the old Johnson farm.
