HI Aurora. I'm using a weighted 'dance hoop'. They are specially made for hula hoop dancing so weigh approx 300-500grams which is significantly heavier than regular kids toy hoops, but it is not the same as the very heavy/chunky fitness hoops that you find in a lot of regular fitness stores. I hope that makes sense! You need to get these from specialised hoop makers. This is my store and the hoop I'm using is a 'Body Rock' hoop: spinjoy.com.au/products/body-rock-dance-hula-hoops I ship worldwide from Australia, but if you want to shop local, I would recommend searching "dance hula hoop" in your area and having a chat with the store owner about a size they recommend based on your height and waist circumference. Hope that helps! Caitlyn xo

@@joannedavidson9194 2 minutes is a LONG time well done!! If you're finding your hoop is still kinda angling in one particular direction, it indicates that you are pushing more into that particular side. You'll find this with a forward back motion more often. If you're feeling more comfortable with spinning now (which it definitely sounds like you are), try now to really focus on getting the circling action happening where you're pushing even pressure around the whole circle, less into one particular direction. Hope that makes sense!
Oh oh...she explains everything that I am facing now. I can spin 1 side and I just want to try another side spin which I still cannot get the connection. Closing eyes and feeling the connection shows improvement. Gotta try more!
Thanks for this! I tried the front/back and side/side with no success but closing my eyes to focus on feeling where to hoop was did the trick! I was too focused on moving my weight front or side and couldn’t get it. I have gone minutes today! Not a lot but more than the usual few spins before it falls. And I was able to move it up using your techniques too. Excited to keep going!
Thank you, I got it a bit... But when I'm doing this after 2-3 rounds it's getting slow and going down, Is it because of I'm using a plastic hoop or any else reason?
Can you send me a video of you hula hooping?? info@spinjoy.com.au or if you can tell me how big your hula hoop is from top to bottom and how tall you are and your waist circumference?
You're great! Thanks for sharing these tips. I sell this online,I was looking for a tutorial to help my customers learn how to use the hoola hoops once they receive their order. I will definitely share this link with them. Thanks alot.
that's great! Shoot me an email if you're interested in being set up as an affiliate to refer your customers to the full beginners course. caitlyn@spinjoy.com.au x
Thank you. I was finding it would spin a maximum of one time before I needed to start moving glad I saw this now it goes about 3x. Need to try and work on the getting it straight. Also try and get it a bit higher as has a habit of touching my right hip a bit too much for my liking. 😮
that's great progress and yes, getting it nice and high on your waist is the best place to control it. If you are finding after a while you're still favouring one hip or noticing bruising in one particular spot of your body, a good thing to focus on is evenly pushing in the other direction. If you're favouring the right hip, try to think about equal force for the push when it comes around to the left side as well. Eventually you'll be pushing evenly in a circular spiral the whole way around, but it can take a little bit of time. Have fun!!
Thank you for your brilliant tutorial. I am managing to hoop using your instructions but I think my form must be bad. Even though I keep the hoop up for a good length of time the next day I have a back ache (not from bruising) or tight hamstrings/front of thighs. Do you have any advice to avoid this? Thank you.
Thank you so much this really helped! But I am still struggling a bit I would love If you would share some more tips or tricks to help or do and don’ts. Thank once again this really improved my skills In a week!
Hi there, is there any particular point of the hooping that you're hitting a snag? Happy to have a look if you'd like to send me a video of you giving it a go.
Wow… Explained very well. I want my kids to learn it. And they are 6 and 8. My question is that Do I need to find a good hoola or any hoola is fine?? The one I brought home is lighter in weight and bigger in size. Plz advice. 😊 Thanks
Small children should be ok with kids toys hula hoops. But children can definitely use larger hoops, it's just about finding a good size that they are capable of lifting off the ground and spinning effectively. Really small children mostly struggle with being strong enough to push the hoop hard enough.
Glad it helped! This is the first lesson from a full course I have for beginners that comes with a $30 store credit for a dance hoop. If you'd like to check out the rest, the course is available here. It'll teach how to hula hoop dance in 4 weeks 🥰🎉💃courses.spinjoy.com.au/courses/spinjoy-foundations-of-hula-hoop-dance
haha i'm very flattered, what a compliment. Aside from enjoying to warm up the dance floor at nightclubs when no one else is yet drunk enough, I don't have a dance background. I enjoy just moving to the music and flowing with my hoop. I teach a lot of the moves and flowing together a sequence in this Foundations of Hoop Dance course and I dive into how to dance with the hoop and some stuff on musicality and hitting the beat in my Body Rock Course, but they're all focused on doing it with the hoop! xoxo Both of those courses are available here: courses.spinjoy.com.au/
Heyy! I've tried for like a week but theres something weird that keeps happening, my hoop starts turning diagonally like downwards in the front and upwards in the back, is it me or my hoops are broken 🤣🤣 I started with the 80 cm one cause I though it was big enough lol
Hey there Giulia! The hoop usually angles for two reasons. 1) you may not be standing up straight. Even a slight bend forward (e.g if you're looking down at the hoop) and 2) if you're not pushing evenly in a circle. Like the power of your push is more towards one point. Hope that makes a bit of sense. It's a little difficult to explain through text. I'd also suggest that 80cm is a pretty small adult size hoop if you're starting out. I generally use 80cm for teaching primary school age children. Most average size women would start with a 100cm diameter hoop. If you're quite petite, a 95cm hoop. Hope that helps and good luck with it! Feel free to send me a video of your hooping via DM on my Instagram if you'd like me to take a proper look at what's going on. Caitlyn xo @_spinjoy_ instagram.com/_spinjoy_/
Hi, what should our hula hoops be made of? Mine is metal and it hurts, but it doesn't have any massage bumps. I am a beginner btw and I love your videos
Hoops for this kind of activity are generally made of polypropylene of HDPE plastic and you'll be wanting to get them from a specialty dance hoop maker. You can generally find them online close to your area. My shop is www.spinjoy.com.au I'm based in Sydney Australia but ship worldwide. You want your beginner hoop to be roughly belly button height (or bigger if you carry more weight around your mid-section) and to weight 350-500grams (depending on its size).
Ok so....in this video here, I show the technique to push harder and faster if the hoop is starting to fall down. It's good to train this technique to save the hoop. HOWEVER, if you are making really big movements with your body/big exaggerated pushes that throw your alignment out, its not great technique. What I suggest is pushing the hoop hard and practicing very tight fast pushes to keep the hoop spinning fast. Then when you start to fall out of the speed and slow down, re-push the hoop fast again and keep going. This method will have you only training the tight fast pushes you want to be achieving, not falling out of alignment to rescue your hoop. It will probably be pretty exhausting, it should be high energy. After doing this a few times in your practice sessions, your body will be trained to keep these tight fast pushes going more easily. I hope that makes sense!! If you need a demonstration let me know and I can do it over on my instagram account for you xox
I highly recommend my shop 🤣 www.spinjoy.com.au/shop If you're a beginner, look for a weighted dance hoop, they should be around 300-500grams depending on size. Size will be based on your height and waist circumference. If you need help, let me know how tall you are and your dress/shirt size and I can help you figure it out.
Also my online course Foundations of Hoop Dance (which this lesson comes from) comes with a $30 store voucher for your first hoop. So it's a great place to start if you're needing a hoop and all the info you'll need to get you spinning and dancing with some awesome tricks. Hi . Loved your tips. I think my loop is small in size compared to yours. So is that the reason i am not able to do it well. What is the best size ? Any particular measurement for adults.
Hi Sarita, yep, small hoop is usually the biggest issue for adults trying to learn. As a general guide, I give most women in my beginner classes hula hoops 95-100cm diameter. If you carry more weight around the middle, you can go up bigger than this, for example a 110cm hoop or bigger. If you're unsure, let me know your height and dress/shirt size and i'll tell you what i think. As a guide, I am 173cm tall/5'8 and a size 10AU - someone my size would start on a 100cm hoop. spinjoy.com.au/shop/hula-hoops/body-rock-dance-hula-hoops/untaped-classic-hula-hoops/
Hi Elnora! It's likely the hula hoop you're using isn't big enough. If you'd like some help working it out feel free to email me caitlyn@spinjoy.com.au
i just bought a hoop but it’s too small :( i can spin it in my hands and feets but not on my waist, but i will keep trying until i buy a proper size one!
Hi Cheryl, as a disclaimer, I'm not a registered health professional. So if you are concerned about pain, the best person to talk to is always your doctor or physio. That being said, with hula hooping, if you are experiencing knee pain, you may be circling excessively through your legs and knees. I'd need to have a look at a video of your technique to be sure, but often this can be a cause of knee pain. The motion should be predominantly coming from your mid-body. This can be tricky in the early stages while your technique is still refining. I would suggest seeing if the one foot in front/forward pack technique helps ease your knee pain. If you'd like to send me a video on instagram DM, I can have a look and see whats happening. instagram.com/_spinjoy_/
Yeah it’s not working for me I have been practicing every day for weeks my hoop is 100 cm weighted but think it must be that I carry my weight round my middle I would buy a bigger one from you guys if it wasn’t for shipping fee I’m in Uk. My 8 year old daughter picked it up after watching you a couple of times. It’s really frustrating! You look beautiful and make it look so effortless 😍😍
Can u plz suggest is it safe to practice everyday.. does any warmup and lower back stretches required after the practice... after 2 hrs of lunch can it be practiced?... plz guide... it would be helpful
Hi Gayastri, just as a disclaimer, I'm not a medical professional, so any advice that I give here is all my own person opinion based on my own experiences. I would suggest that you treat hula hooping like any other exercise regimen you participate in. While it is safe to practice daily, as with all exercises, it is important to listen to your body and take rest days as needed. While I practice hula hooping on occasions for multiple hours at a time, I do believe specifically doing a 2 hour session every day may possibly be overdoing it. Depending though on the types of movements you're practicing, mixing up off-body tricks with on-body drills so you are not over exercising any one particular body part. Waist hooping on its own is a good warm up for your body, as a light aerobic exercise to get blood flowing and warm up your muscles. For after a workout I would definitely focus on taking time to stretch, particularly your lower back (quadratus lumborum muscles) as these can take a load when your abdominals are tired and these will be the source of generalised lower back aches. I hope that helps!! But as I mentioned, i'm not a doctor, so if you have any specific medical concerns, i'd definitely go speak to your healthcare professional xx
Mam I am 36 yrs old. My height around 5. My weight is 70 kilos. Which hoop would be appropriate for me for shoulder hooping. I do have weighted hoop. But it hurts while practicing hooping at shoulder and neck
Hello lovely. I would start with a 95cm OD dance hoop. I'd recommend getting it from a dance hoop supplier as this will be better than the weighed fitness hoops that can be too cumbersome to do tricks with. If you can't find any locally I sell them on my website shipped from Australia. spinjoy.com.au/collections/hula-hoops/products/body-rock-dance-hula-hoops
Hi Georgina! It's a little bit of a complex response rather than a straight "yes" or "no". Hula hoop dance is an amazing form of aerobic exercise which does help burn calories and reduce fat. With all aerobic exercise, where a person will lose weight and in what order, is completely down to their genetics. For example, you may reduce fat first from your arms and thighs and lose belly fat last. It's purely down to the individual. With that being said, hula hooping on your waist does increase muscle tone in that area, which can also give the visual illusion of a smaller more toned waist. So long answer short, yes - hula hooping does reduce belly fat. Hope that makes sense!
A weighed dance hula hoop (300-500grams) they will vary country to country on what they are made from. From a speciality hula hoop maker. Size will depend on your height and waist circumference. These are the ones all my beginners use for learning in my beginners course spinjoy.com.au/products/body-rock-dance-hula-hoops
Is she using a weighted hoop?

@@joannedavidson9194 2 minutes is a LONG time well done!! If you're finding your hoop is still kinda angling in one particular direction, it indicates that you are pushing more into that particular side. You'll find this with a forward back motion more often.
If you're feeling more comfortable with spinning now (which it definitely sounds like you are), try now to really focus on getting the circling action happening where you're pushing even pressure around the whole circle, less into one particular direction. Hope that makes sense!
@@SpinJoyHoopDance thanks. I'm really enjoying making progress. Yes that makes sense, will try that. Thanks so much 😀
Oh oh...she explains everything that I am facing now. I can spin 1 side and I just want to try another side spin which I still cannot get the connection. Closing eyes and feeling the connection shows improvement. Gotta try more!
I did it
Thank you very much for this wonderful tutorial and explaination
Yay well done!! 🤩🥳
Excited to keep going!
well done!! It's so satisfying when it clicks. Keep at it and it'll just get easier and easier, you won't even need to think about it anymore.

Thank you because of you I am able to learn how to do hula hoop
Thank you, I got it a bit... But when I'm doing this after 2-3 rounds it's getting slow and going down, Is it because of I'm using a plastic hoop or any else reason?
Can you send me a video of you hula hooping?? info@spinjoy.com.au
or if you can tell me how big your hula hoop is from top to bottom and how tall you are and your waist circumference?
Thank you.
Cool you 've been using hulahoop in your waist for 8 minutes! 😊

Who knew you'd 'forget' how to hula hoop! 🤦♀️Great video and I can't wait to try it.
good luck! let me know how you get on.
Waw! I had a few "AHAAAA" 😂😂😂

This may be a weird comment but do you do online dance tutorials without a hoop? You hula hoop great but you are also an awesome dancer!
haha i'm very flattered, what a compliment.

Sound effect 😂 love it
Best tutorial ever thaxx
Thanks so much! Glad it was useful 😊
Hey can you teach how to increase speed
The best tutorial
Superb 👍👍👍👍
Do you so much for teaching me how to roll if I don’t know how do I watch this video
Are you still having trouble getting the hoop to stay up? Why don't you send me a video so I can see? Over on Instagram instagram.com/_spinjoy_/
Where is the best place to get a hoop? Is weighted hoops best?
I highly recommend my shop 🤣 www.spinjoy.com.au/shop
If you're a beginner, look for a weighted dance hoop, they should be around 300-500grams depending on size.

Can you tell me how the weight of hoop is . I have an adjustable hoop by adding sand inside. Tks in advance.
Hi there, my hoops weigh approx 350-400 grams depending on the size. The extra large and thick ones weigh around 500grams.
thank you for this!! any tips for knee pain...other than taking a break? thx :)
If you'd like to send me a video on instagram DM, I can have a look and see whats happening. instagram.com/_spinjoy_/

amazing! Well done!!

But mam I stay in India. In that case it would be very costly to me.

Does this help in reducing belly fat??
