    I live in Vernon County, WI and remember when the big Oshkosh's would come out during a bad snow storm. They were so cool and maybe even somewhat scary to a young boy back in the 60's. I was told it took 2 men to operate, one to drive and run the V plow and another to run the wing. Thanks for saving a piece of history!

    • @RobsNeighbor
      @RobsNeighbor  15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I can imagine being scared! Walking up to the Oshkosh is intimidating at my age!
      Rob had a conversation the other day with a retired wingman that ran the V and wing when our township had one as it does take two. I am excited to do a video on that. He said the biggest thing to know is not get stuck the hoist for the Wing on the right front will catch if your not careful. Who is going it unstick you when your stuck with something so big? $$$ I never thought of that but I guess as humans we will get anything stuck! Thank you for watching

    I grew up in Norther Michigan in the snow belt along Lake Superior. When it was a bad winter with 300 inches of snow the county road commission would get the Oshkosh out. That one had tandem axels on the back with a 6x6 concrete block chained to the frame. The mechanic told me there wasn’t anything else to clear the snow. I heard it was a beast to drive. It had a huge V plow on the front to keep the highway clear all night long in case of emergencies. In one 8 hour shift it used 150 gallons of fuel. Lol!!!

      @RobsNeighbor  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    Our county in Northern Michigan has one with a V plow in front and massive wrecker bed on it. They still use it to pull out the newer plows that get stuck in the ditch during a snowstorm.

    • @RobsNeighbor
      @RobsNeighbor  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for sharing, a retired operator told Rob that the biggest thing not to do is get stuck due to not much around to unstick you especially if you are in a off the path spot. The Wing hoist sits low to the ground in proportion to the rest and was told at times that may have hung the retired operator up a time or two.

    I grew up on the eastern end of Michigan's upper peninsula from 1961 to 1974, i think that all the plows for Chippewa County were these trucks. They were single wheel 4 x 4's with chains on the rear wheels and a big cement block over the rear axel. Seeing one of these clearing a rd with full 4 ft of snow bank to bank is a real treat.

    • @RobsNeighbor
      @RobsNeighbor  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I can only imagine that would be awesome to see. Here in southern Wi we see a average of 37 inches of snow per year. And about 3 so far this year. Honestly a good 20 inch overnighter would make for good footage, that is wishful thinking on my part. Thank you for sharing your story!

    I rescued a 1968 FWD 6x6 in 1985 I have put 19,500 hours on it and 189,000 miles on it since then. I replaced the Red Diamond 501 gas engine with a brand new 3208 Cat 250 HP turbo engine and I replaced the Fuller 5 speed with an Eaton RTO 6610 10 speed trans that I rebuilt. FWD/s are far Superior with all wheel drive full time torque Proportioned 3 speed transfer case and locking axles.. it's just too bad that FWD's break all of the time. The Oshkosh is specked a lot Heavier and is more reliable than the FWD is.
    Walter Trucks had an Ingenious system to transfer torque from the spinning wheel to the wheel with more traction. This Pateneted system is still used in Exotic performance cars today.
    I have a book in the History of Oshkosh .. one on the History of Walter and one on the History of Oshkosh too. I have two Oshkosh Trucks. One is an M-911 Tank carrier truck. I have an F Series Oshkosh with a 230 HP 855 Cummins that just purrs and an 8 Speed Eaton trans.

      @@RobsNeighbor I am interested in the Specs of the Truck. Opps I recently watched a Video of staring an old Oshkosh in AK it had a Super charged Cummins. I think it was a 1957 Model . I have a 1963 Loraine with a JS-8 engine 401 Cubic inch Supercharged Motor. My friend had an Oshkosh with a C-190 the same motor 190 HP with a Turbo instead of a supercharger. I will try to find a link for the 6x6 Oshkosh in AK Many older Oshkosh used a 5 speed with a 3 speed auxiliary tans the auxiliary also was the Transfer case.
      The Oshkosh book was written by Clarence Youngworth . He was an Engineer at Oshkosh for many Decades.. He knew how to look up most any part for an Oshkosh.. He continued going into work until he was 90 years old or more. I spoke with him on the phone a couple of times.
      About 14 years ago I stopped at Oshkosh.. They build a lot of Military Trucks and everything was top secret. I got in trouble for taking pictures of trucks that were being driven around the block on public roads and getting picked up and hauled across the Country on Low Boys.
      Then I went to the FWD Museum in Clintonville WI
      The Oshosh corp. was started by people who left FWD . FWD built a 4 wheel drive first, steam powered. Then they repowered it with a gas engine. The Ball & Socket steering Drive axle was invented and patented by the Blacksmith who started the Four Wheel Drive Auto Company .

    WOW!!..This thing is so cool!!!..I have been searching for one of those medium size Terex trucks but I am about to start on a project that will take up a quite a bit of time...I have been sourcing metalworking and woodworking machines to start the build of my 1928 Morgan/GN (MG) special...here is the original that exists in England and is still raced to this day..th-cam.com/video/W9QMa7AUD-4/w-d-xo.html

      That is awesome! I love the Morgan and until a decade ago had no idea what they were. There is a motorcycle event near us called the Slimey Crud Run, and there was a modern kit Morgan there I really appreciate that machine. Thank you for the link, what a great video!

      @@RobsNeighbor The coolest thing is that it is exactly a '20's airplane without the propeller and wings. I have a BMW opposed twin that I am hand casting and adapter for our of aluminum to mate with anMG 4 speed manual transmission connected to an MG differential with spoked wheels...Check out the link to the original car. I will end up fining a V-Twin flathead to use with it but the BMW should work until then...
