    5150 is like a guitar and a bass drum synced up. Love it. I own a 5150 combo. Heaviest amp I ever owned.....no really....the amp weights like 90lbs and comes installed with three straps to be able lift it.

    When do you this in the future, can you run through the unboosted tones first, and then the boosted tones? It makes it easier to compare the sound of the amps.

    • @pogoman246
      @pogoman246 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Randy Morgan Watch the video. He plays all of them without a boost, and with a boost, while cycling through them. You know when he added it when all of a sudden there is a pedal hanging out with the amp he's playing.

    • @mistersadaimusic
      @mistersadaimusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You must not have understood his request. He'd rather hear the tone without the boost in front of each amp, then the tone with the boost.
      In this video, Fluff has the unboosted tone, then the boosted tone of the amp, then proceeds on to the next one.

    • @FatherDeath86
      @FatherDeath86 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think hes just asking for it to be more segregated. Meaning, play the riff through one amp then stop and go to the next one and so forth. Then do it again with a boosted tone. Think like Glenn Fricker does on his channel. It makes it easier to fallow which tone is through which amp

    The low end of the 5150 is unreal, and the amp sounds amazing. But I'd say my favourite is the 6505MH. If it had more low end it would be insane.

  • @gordontubbs
    @gordontubbs 9 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    6505MH for live application. In this demo, the 5150's balls and resonance would get completely lost within a band context and live mix. When your mids are scooped, your lows get flooded by the bass guitar and the highs get washed out by the drummer's cymbals. The tubescreamer improved the 5150's mix-cutting capability somewhat, but was clearly trumped by the 6505. Reading the comments below, it just makes me shake my head. Yes, the 5150 sounded fucking badass, and alone in your garage or bedroom, cranking and chugging is the greatest thing since sliced bread... but live? When the other guitarist has an equally "BR00T4L" tone? No thanks.

    • @jonthorsigmunds
      @jonthorsigmunds 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Gordon Tubbs Very true but in this demo the 5150 sounds amazing, way better than the 6505 imo

    • @gordontubbs
      @gordontubbs 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh yeah, not necessarily disputing that. Fluff goes on to say that each model can actually overlap the other's tones, the "flat EQ" setting on the 5150 is clearly perfect for balls to the wall metal studio tone, just not live tone.

    • @UglyGrayDuck
      @UglyGrayDuck 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Gordon Tubbs you could probs dial back the bass a tad, and probably the resonance and get it to cut through. I'd choose the 6505 as well, though.

    • @KFieLdGaming
      @KFieLdGaming 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Gordon Tubbs I can assure you(from experience) that a 5150 cuts through just fine in a live mix. Granted I owned a signature model for years and not a block letter but the only difference between them is the tubes they shipped with. It has plenty of mid-range and there's a reason why most bands on planet earth have used one at one point since they hit the market in the 90s.
      I ran mine with tungsol preamp tubes and Winged =C= model 6L6 power tubes, ran the mids on 7, highs on 7 and lows on 4.5 and it sang. We used a dual recto/5150 setup for gigs for many years and it always sounded killer. Both boosted with tubescreamers.

    • @crestfallenode
      @crestfallenode 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Gordon Tubbs I have owned the 5150 and the 6505. They cut through better than any hi gain head i have owned. If you get lost in the mix with a Peavey, then you are doing something wrong. I have owned just about everything from Soldano to Marshall to Mesa, and many others TOO many to list. I stuck with mesa but Peavey heads cut through the mix the best, even when scooped. This is fact. Unless you are mic'ed up extremely well like better than 90% of local venues are even capible of, then you would be extremely upset getting a 6505mh over a 6505 or 5150. Tracked it sounds sweet and with a less heavier band it may rock for you live, but if you want the brootz live, the MH wont cut it. I've rehearsed with a mini rec and a 6505mh, unmic'ed it just doesn't have the girth for heavy stuff. BUT both are fuckin sweet heads nonetheless.

  • @grucich
    @grucich 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I don't even live in a apartment, I live in a house with several yards between neighbors... All these amps are a beast, but the big boys are meant to rock a stage at a large venue :)

    I liked the 6505+ the most. The MH doesn't do a bad job at all though, especially considering the price and what you get out of it, it just lacks a bit of the low end that makes the 6505 so chunky. The 5150 did seem super scooped to me as well and I like a bright mid range that cuts through the mix so...6505 for me!!

      That's because the 5150 mk 1 hates jj's in the pre amp.They can make really good amps sound like shit.Cheap Chinese 12 ax7's is all you need to bring it to life.

    Thanks so much for doing this Fluff! There hasn't been a good comparison of these amps until now. Honestly to me the 6505+ is the winner here just because of the mids it has. If the 5150's mids were higher I'd probably like that the best.
    Also at some point check out running these amps with the presence on 9! It really opens up the top end and it sounds like taking a blanket off the speaker. I know Glenn from SMG does this as well.

    Maybe I'm slightly biased since I myself play a 6505+, but the thicker, slightly bassier tone of the 6505+ is definitely something I would reach for first out of those three. I'm really surprised/impressed how well the 6505MH holds up the its predecessors, though. Solid amps all around!

      Same. I have been hunting every 6505mh shootout I can find on youtube for about 2 weeks now and have yet to see it lose overall, considering the price point. I would still love to have a rectoverb 25 but this even holds agenst that one in my opinion and for a fraction of the price. Disclaimer I have no plans to gig and that has an effect on my current opinion, idk what I would gig with if my health was better but probably still either the 6505mh or the 6505 plus.

    0:56, no offence, or anything...this is just to clear things out a bit; the 5150 did not "form heavy music". There was plenty of heavy music made before 1992, in which the 5150 was not even part of. By a long shot.

    • @Rushtallica
      @Rushtallica 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I remember when for the first time hearing each of Slayer and Metallica's Reign in Blood and Master of Puppets just after they released and thinking it'll never be able to get more intense. :D And, of course, there had been heavy music long before that. Still, IMO in some ways some of the attitude and aggressiveness that went into some of the '80s stuff stands up to this day, and boosted and/or modded Marshalls, Laney, Carvin x100b's, Mesa Mark series amps, and various rack rigs made for the heavy tones of the times. 8)

    Just picked up at 6505 at a pawn shop for $350 clearance tag. I thought it might be broken. They gave me 3 days full money back guarantee. I said why not. Plugged it in my cab. Noticed right away a preamp tube was bad. Replaced it. Now It sounds freaking amazing! . They had a sticker on it originally for 500 bucks. They probably thought it was broken.

    I like the 5150 the most. Maybe I'm just old. I dont know. I feel like it brings the fullest, most balanced sound into the mix while keeping the savageness and evil tone even in lower gain. It also sounds the best boosted and highlights even more just how evil and dark this amp sounds even in low gain and high clarity of notes.

    Apparently the 5150 from '92 had a weird thing happen, where the presence knob doesn't kick in before 6, so that could explain the "scooped" sound compared to the others, who would have had some presence dialed in where the 5150 had none.

    I've tried every older 5150 variant under the son(not counting the 5150 3 by Fender/EVH). The 5150 Block Letter. The 5150 Sig. The 5150 II, the 6505, 6505+, 6505MH, etc. The best sounding one I have ever tried and still own is the original 5150 block letter. It's had a bias mod done but nothing radical...and I don't even know the specifics since I didn't perform it, I bought the amp after it had been modded. I've compared it with a verified stock 5150 block letter and the difference was mostly evident on the rhythm channel set as clean as I could get it. Less sterile sounding, more warm and sustain seemed better. Any difference with high gain on the lead channel was minimal but that could've been the tubes, really. The amp has a usable clean channel even at high volumes, sounds pretty good with my chorus/delay pedals running.
    As far as tubes, the best I've ever gotten my 5150 to sound was with Winged =C= power 6L6s in the power amp, and in the pre-amp I had a single tung sol in V1, with shuguang chinese 12ax7s in the rest of the preamp slots. I've tried tons of different combinations and brands(some of which are rebrands obviously) but that is the combination the amp seems to love and I've stuck with it over the last decade or so. Rubies, JJs, Tung Sols in all slots, Electro Harmonix, Sovteks, you name I've tried it. As far as power tubes, nothing beats the =C= tubes in my book. Not for that amp in particular. I tried this combination after surfing the harmony central forums religiously years and years ago lol. It seemed like everyone and their brother was running their 5150 with these tubes, so I tried it on a hunch after previously running JJ power tubes and EH 12ax7s. So. Much. Better.

    Thanks for this video Fluff! I had an original 5150 (of course like a dumb dumb I sold it) but also have a bone stock 6505+ Ive used for 8 years and love it! Gonna retube pre amp section with Tung Sol 12AX7 (V1 and V6) and JJEC83 in between, cant wait to hear it! The 5150 def has a scooped mid characteristic about it but the 6505+ has a certain 'smack' to it that can't be beat in my opinion. I know you described the pre amp tubes in all of the amps but whatcha using for power tubes? Thanks man, horns up!

  • @karolkozak64

    had both at a certain stage.. the old 5150 and the 6505+.. i preferred the raw growly sound of the 5150. the 6505+ was more of a beehive on certain settings, it was thinner sounding really. I had no problem cutting through in the mix with both. They are both rather mid heavy amps.

  • @rmzzz76
    @rmzzz76 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Speaking of that 92' Peavey 5150 block letter "this is the amp that all the modelers try to imitate, this is the amp that formed heavy music as we know it today". That's a very true statement. The first album this amp appeared on would have been Van Halen's - For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, which is my favorite of the Hagar era VH albums. That was very early 90s right before Grunge movement and the tone we're hearing on it never could have existed before it because the amp and guitar were both EVH signature editions that were still in prototype stage during the recording.

    Hey Fluff, this shoot out has me thinking. From a recording standpoint, are high wattage amps really necessary in the studio? I know there are many factors that can determine the choice. But, generally speaking what advantages does recording with high watt amps offer compared to smaller combo amps? Thanks Fluff. keep on keepin' on!
