Hi Harsha, this is a difficult question to answer because few surgeons have the confidence to publish their complication rates, and even those who do, can have varying definitions of deficits, severity, duration and recovery. Having said that,I have found data suggesting a range of about 5-6%. The other aspect to consider is the risk of foot drop from not operating. Generally, any surgery carries risks and the decision to operate needs to take into account the balance between taking action and inaction. From my experience, surgeons only decompress spines when they see evidence that they really need to, and when it does happen, there is usually no obvious reason/cause identified when they look in to it. Hope that helps and wishing you better, Simon
If the phlebotomist hit a nerve in my arm while drawing blood and now my whole vein up and down my forearm has has hurt for two days. Did she hit a nerve and will it get better?

dear Dr. Simon, thank you for the video. nice advises there DR.But allow me to also ask this what happens after nerve breaks from the spinal cord / and how do they take to recover?kindly suggest for some of the drugs that I can use meantime.thanks
Hi, unfortunately, at present there is no known cure for spinal cord injuries. Lots of efforts are being made to achieve this, and it's a matter of time. We know that the cells in the spinal cord are capable of growing, whilst we are babies but various 'switches' get thrown that stop this. We need to better understand these processes and then we can move treatment forward. In the meantime, physiotherapys are the way forward. Bw Simon

Hi there, I had a gluteal IM injection 2 weeks ago of diclofenac. I have developed nerve pain in the left buttocks and radiating down the lateral side of the thigh. Could it be nerve damage from the chemicals, or nerve compression from scar tissue forming? I'm wondering what to do to help in either case. Thanks
Hello Dr. Freilich I had right L5-S1disc herniation about 13 months ago with radiculopathy (which evolved during these 9 pro-op months). 4 Months ago I decided to have a microdiscectomy on that disc. The symtopms that I have is foot numbness mainly in the balls of the toes. It becomes irritated and sore when walking or applying a lot of pressure in this area. The whole foot feels "going away" or "not there" when I put closed shoes and start walking for a distance. Also I cannot sit in certain positions for long periods of time as I get flairups. It seems to be very slowly improving but It doesn't resolve to the point that it's not annoying and bothering me anymore. How can I assess my nerve root damage and what is the recovery for such an injury? Will/can the nerve regain it's conduction let's say 90% in the next 6 months? If so what are the indications for that? Thank you Toda raba!
Hi Roey, lumbar levels of injury often take a couple of years to resolve. It sounds- in the grand scheme of things- not too bad (yes, very easy for me to say) given that you've only got numbnes and not weakness as well which is a positive thing. Hang in there, keep up the physio and healthy living and with more time you'll hopefully do well. Bw Simon
Can I ask how long does it take for nerves thru neck back of head and forehead take to heal? If you are taking all necessary supplements anti inflammatory diet etc? Will nerves repair cause additionally tension headaches? Thanks.
I sustained a severed ulnar nerve injury at wrist level 27 yrs.ago. I had surgery about six months later. I recovered opposition movement, that is I can touch with my little finger extended all fingers'tips fully extended as well. I have all my strength while closing the fist. I lost the ablility to close all fingers namely the annular and middle fingers. Suffered muscle waste as well. Stating all the above how could I assess my recovering? Thank you Doctor.
Thanks, a very good question. Clearly, you're recovery has not been full and that's often the case with any significant injury. There are many different aspects that can be measured. The most common aspects are as follows: nerves can be assessed via nerve conduction tests, strength via a variety of strain gauges (dynamometery), functional impact via questionnaires etc. Bw Simon

Dr. Simon, what about antibiotic-induced neuropathy? I threw away an entire course of Levofloxacin, but only took one dose. I have neuropathy, it’s not too bad and feel prickling and tingling. Since I stopped after one, is that prognosis good?
Dear Doctor. I’m currently suffering from peripheral nerve issues as a result of a reaction to Ciprofloxacin. I’ve been tingling for a few days now. Is this likely to settle down?
Hi, it's now accepted that as a rare drug reaction, ciprofloxacin can cause these symptoms as a presentation of a peripheral neuropathy. The general advice is to discontinue taking it (you'll need to see your doctor re a replacement for whatever reason it was prescribed) and usually it settles by itself. There are no obvious reasons to predispose it occurring, and no specific treatments other than letting the body settle things down. Hope that helps, bw Simon
@@DrSimonFreilich God bless you Doctor. Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. This is very reassuring to know that the nerve issues will hopefully settle down after a while. i have also issue of my right eye Advanced Glaucoma and optic nerve has been damaged and Retinal detachment ... very old is there is any chance to restore vision..
Do you think a doctor should be able to specify all this with an EMG? If not an EMG, what tests would have to be performed to get the details on the exact type of nerve damage? I’ve got a brachial plexus nerve damage problem that I’ve been dealing with for about 10 months, it was only recently diagnosed correctly when I made the issue a hundred times worse while stretching and my lost function and sensation in my left arm. My doctor did an EMG and noted some damage to the upper plexus and said she saw signs that it was recovering from an injury that appeared to be 6-12 months old and there was no need for further treatment other than to stay active with therapy. I feel like this was a really unsatisfactory experience as I don’t feel safe at the gym but I can’t live with the atrophy of the affected muscles so I do my best to target them in spite of fact that they don’t cooperate well, fatigue extremely fast, and are extremely painful. I know you can’t give medical advice on my circumstances but hypothetically would a doctor be able to find all this out to give me a more detailed prognosis than damage to the upper plexus? I feel like the fact that I lost function and experience so much pain that saying it’s getting better doesn’t make much sense. It’s hard to believe, it feels like a pressing issue that needs to be addressed not something I just let heal as I don’t feel like I’m improving the way they think I am.
Hi Luis - it sounds like you'd be best off seeing an experienced orthopaedic shoulder surgeon with the EMG results. They are well placed in their understanding of the anatomy, movement and physical therapy needs of what is a very complex joint and often work in liaison with physio's to address the rehab needs of those affected with conditions such as yours. An EMG result in isolation isn't helpful to patients and is one of the main reasons that I don't accept direct self-referrals. Bw Simon
Hi Steven, unfortunately at this time point, v unlikely to improve. Might be worth discussing with a pain specialist if there might be any options. Bw Simon

Hi Jose, unfortunately, spinal cord tissue doesn't repair or have the same capacity for regrowth as peripheral nerve tissue. This is very much the 'holy grail' of rehab research. There seems to be an 'off switch' that is triggered when we are still very young, that halts this ability. As such, there is very little specific that can be recommended over and above a number of the types of treatments you describe. Bw Simon

Hi my father lost his vision
what are the possibilities of nerve damage during laminectomy surgery? Because after laminectomy surgery I got a new numbness and drop foot.

Hi, I see patients with this from time to time and it's almost never nerve damage per se. If concerned, seek medical attention. Bw Simon
Thanks Dr. Simon. I am wondering if you could comment on how this relates to someone who has undergone a spinal lipoma removal. Does the nerve damage that has been irreversible, has a chance to become reversible?

dear Dr. Simon, thank you for the video. I have had a venipuncture today in the medial cubital vein at the time of blood extraction it was mildly painful and after some time pain has gone, however I started later to feel like mild muscle spasm in my forearm specially my index finger was getting some spasms. could that be a nerve damage from the venipuncture? and if it was, will it go away? or it maybe something else ? knowing that there is no numbness nor tingling only this mild spasms and sometimes a very mild heaviness in the hand that comes and goes.

nice advises there DR.But allow me to also ask this what happens after nerve breaks from the spinal cord / and how do they take to recover?kindly suggest for some of the drugs that I can use meantime.thanks

Thanks
Hi Natalie, you'll need to get yourself medically assessed. Bw Simon
Hello Dr. Freilich
I had right L5-S1disc herniation about 13 months ago with radiculopathy (which evolved during these 9 pro-op months).
Thank you
Toda raba!
Bw Simon
Hey Roe,how is your numbness now? I got fully same problems with u. Got the surgery 10 days ago.
@@DrSimonFreilich is it possible to not to have weakness with numbness

@@EvaSlayAllDay334 Do you feel the tingling sensation on the area of the lesion or your fingertips?
I do not. It’s more prickly, but it’s not debilitating at all.
I stopped taking it after the first dose. It only took one 500mg tablet to cause the reaction. Hi motor neuron type have muscles damage drop foot what can help me
Do you think a doctor should be able to specify all this with an EMG?

Bw Simon
