  • Crushing Prince Rupert Drops !!
    edit 15/05/16 : This experiment will be done again ! This time with much larger drops and the tail out of harms way ! check our Facebook page to see a picture of the drops we just made for the 2nd experiment !!
    This video was requested by MANY MANY people, so here you go !!
    First of all, we were amazed how strong these drops were !
    With the 1st drop, we started with a piece of wood to see if the drop would be pressed in it, and YES.... the drop was entirely pressed in the piece of wood without any problem.
    Then we took the same drop and pressed it between 2 steel plates. This destroyed the drop at +-20 Bar.
    Each Bar is 214kg, so the drop took aprox 4.2Tons before bursting .... Pretty nice tough ...
    The 2nd and 3th drop were put on a piece of lead (softer metal then steel), to see if it would dent the lead...
    The drop went into the lead pretty deep before it burst, but you can clearly see how deep it went before it burst.
    There was allot of cutting done in the video because it took several minutes to remove the glass from those holes in the lead....
    Result : These drops are very strong !!
    To make a hole in lead with that size requires pretty much force....
    Thanks for watching !!
    Put your ideas in the comments what you want to see pressed !
    Note :
    Also visit the "Hydraulic Press Channel" from Finland with their awesome Hydraulic Press Channel !!!

    Can we get another one with rupert drops, but where the tail is outside the crush radius?

    • @thewhoopimen
      @thewhoopimen 8 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      +Patrick Winter Agreed. I felt like most of the time the Rupert Drops were only breaking because of the tail section snapping. The tail should should have been left out of the crush radius.

      +thewhoopimen what would be the difference?

    • @thewhoopimen
      @thewhoopimen 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      +Gerardo Salas The tail is the weakpoint of a Prince Rupert drop. A Prince Rupert Drop is almost indestructible as long as the the tail does not snap. It has very contradictory properties, able to take great stress on the drop, but will explode at the slightest damage to the tail. As long as we see that the hydraulic press only working on the drop and not the tail, we can better gauge the compressive properties that the drop can withstand. If you see it in their lead plate demonstration in the video, the drop actually presses through lead first safely, but shatters when the tail touches the lead.

    This wasn't done right. you need to protect the tail and smash the drop. the drop didn't shatter because you smashed it. it shattered because you failed to protect the tail by putting the whole thing under the press and allowing the press to kill the drop via the tail.

    I would love to see this again but this time protecting the tail, I'm sure you will be able to press them straight into the lead without breaking them. On the first one you were very lucky the breakage of the tail didn't created a chain reaction and shattered the whole drop, I'm sure you can get one on lead too.

  • @dakiloth

    I'm pretty sure that, if the drop is made properly, it's meant to shatter when you break the tail due to the internal stresses. What you have here is a glob of glass.

    I heard that when you pressurize ice it momentarily turns into water like during ice skating. But it immediately turns back once pressure is removed. Try pressurizing a huge block of ice. Also if there is a way of making an airtight system, I wonder if you could make liquid air by pressurizing it. Also could you try pressuring an egg in the vertical position? Science tells us it's indestructible.

      It technically is , however it wud only be indestructible under perfect conditions , any imperfections in the material providing the force and any imperfections in the egg shell wud cause it to break easily with said force

      It is a piece of glass that is cooled very rapidly (usually by dripping some molten glass into some water.) This rapid cooling creates a very hard and very brittle droplet of glass. It also exhibits the property of extreme instability when damaged, such that even snapping the very thin tail of the drop will cause the whole thing to explode.

      I just googled it - quite amazing little things. They are small pieces of hot glass dropped in cold water. The outside cools down, while the inside stays hot for a period of time. This causes a lot of stress and different forces within the glass. It can reportedly withstand a hammer strike, but if that tail is even slightly damaged, the drop will explode, causing glass splinters to fly around in a bout 1.5 km/s.

    You should retry pressing a Prince Rupert Drops against a Circular Saw Blade. They are usually made of Cemented carbide. I.e tungsten carbide (WC), titanium carbide (TiC), or tantalum carbide (TaC) . Or press against a diamond Circular Saw Blade. Then it would be interesting to see what happens.
    If this will be redone, then leave te tail of the Prince Rupert Drop outside of the press so it can't be damaged. The tail is it's only weak point. For more information watch Dustin from SmarterEveryDay explain about the Prince Rupert Drop.

    Prince Rupert's Drops (also known as Dutch tears[1]) are glass objects created by dripping molten glass into cold water. The glass cools into a tadpole-shaped droplet with a long, thin tail. The water rapidly cools the molten glass on the outside of the drop, while the inner portion of the drop remains significantly hotter. When the glass on the inside eventually cools, it contracts inside the already-solid outer part. This contraction sets up very large compressive stresses on the surface, while the core of the drop is in a state of tensile stress. It is a kind of toughened glass.
    The very high residual stress within the drop gives rise to counter-intuitive properties, such as the ability to withstand a blow from a hammer on the bulbous end without breaking, but experiencing explosive disintegration if the tail end is even slightly damaged.

    Protect the tail during the test's, the drop will shatter if cracked in any way. Also the first test could have had much more pressure applied if the drop didn't roll and scratch when the pressure was increasing. Any scratch or defect in the surface of the drop will cause it to shatter also.

    While the head of the drop can be hit with a hammer without breaking, when any portion of the tail is damaged, the large amount of potential energy stored in the internal structure is released, causing fractures to propagate through the glass toward the head at very high speeds which break the entire structure into flakes and powder.

  • @youllfindout7492

    What I would like to know is whether or not the point of break for the drop is when the metal touches the stem. I've heard/read that the weakness in the drop is the stem. Even slow-mo is too fast for my eyes. Does the bead burst when the outside force touches it? What can the drop itself withstand without any pressure on the stem? Why does this happen?

      Transferring power through hydraulics has an advantage, and is that by sacrificing distance (the distance the press moves) you can generate substantially more force. You do this by having two presses, a very thin one that moves a long distance and a very thick one that moves a short distance. If you move the thin one, say, 10cms, the big one will move only 1cm but with 10 times the strenght. It's analogous to how a lever works.

    • @cybertree
      @cybertree 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The short and easy answer is THICK OIL, it doesn't compress, so the machine can "spit out" tiny amounts of oil behind the crushing head over and over until it builds up enough force to crush whatever you need.
      (Just like inflating a balloon, it's much easier to inflate with a bunch of small breaths, instead of one giant one.)

    This isnt fair for the drops eh. If you want to do this in the right way you must press only the drop without the tail...the tail is just normal glass but if it breaks the pulling inward forces all get leaked and the drop blows up on its own...
    So you should repeat all of this because in all of the the tail is what breaks the drop.

    I'd like to see a stack of pennies or nickles in there. Like 20 of them. I'd like to know if they would be pressed into one big sheet or would they be able to be separated? I guess one big sheet, but i'd still like to see it.

    it appears as if the tail of the drop gets pressed which will cause it to break sooner. just snapping the tail releases all the stored compression.

    I don't think you crushed the actual drop.

  • @Mario-sx2lm
    @Mario-sx2lm 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    You could try with sheets of glass , i recomend 3 mm thick 3 of 4 layers, of little squares, and make different samples each with a different adhesive, the thing is that I tried it with a bench vice and any adhesive between the sheets of glass and I reached a point in which the glass was all broken, but still was in place, it showed an impressive resistance, and then it started to make more and more breaking noises and then it exploded :) , im pretty shure thar you could stamp a lead ingot with that.

    I've got a suggestion for your next press! How about a brake pad from a vehicle, or one of it's spark plugs. Why not both?
    Also, compressed, canned air, like the dusters.

Maybe because it's round, Now I wanna see a comparison with another round object such as a ball bearing or the likes and see if the press shifts like that, anyone have a link to the press shifting on any object of similar size? Maybe I just never noticed it shift until now, I've watched many

    The trouble is is that the press is breaking the tail. You can't break the tail - It shatters the whole thing.

    • @inquaanate2393

      Prince ruperts drop are stronger than steel. It didn't get shattered when you hit it with hammer. But when you break the tail of it, the whole thing explodes. It's a fun experiment.

  • @joyman2000
    @joyman2000 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    the secret of their strong is the tail, there is no tail there, so tension are not organiced to the back tail, otherwhise the resistance goes down.

    Crush a Rupert-drop on something that has a space dug out of it for the tail to fit in so that the tail doesn't get crushed, and THEN see how much force it takes to crush its head.

    • @NecromancyBlack
      @NecromancyBlack 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Abishey Dean Heat up glass so it melts and drop a drop of it into cold water.
      The thick bubble part is incredibly strong, due to surface area being under incredible tension. You can smash it hard as you want with a hammer and it won't break. However, if you cut the tail part of them all that tension goes and the whole thing explodes.
      If you rewatch this video, you'll see they mostly pop and the tail part is pressed on and breaks.

  • @spiffypop1195
    @spiffypop1195 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You have to be sure the TAIL isnt in the way. The moment the tail of the drop snaps, the drop itself shatters.
