Unfortunately, most of the C9 spam is referring to a play that wasn't actually a C9. People spam C9 when one single player is still alive on their team and dies before they can tap the point. Or when someone gets booped away from the point.
People really gloss over that fact. Teams forgetting the objectives has happend long before C9 did it but them doing it three times really stood out and cemented the name
HourlySum It doesn’t even have to exclusively be when you’re winning the fight. If you and the enemy team are on even grounds and it’s a winnable situation but you’re team actually FORGETS (emphasis on forgetting, not getting forced away) about the objective, that’s a C9
Without that its not their fault bullshit, cus it fucking is, the object of overwatch was never to kill but to get the point, and yea, therefore kill but when you forget the point within that rush its well deserved and (at least for the moment and as a pro player) definately stupid.
It wasn't just that moment at apex, Cloud 9 continued to repeat similar situations at other tournaments, few occuring multiple times in one, to the point that they became recognized for 'C9-ing' and sparked that term in the community.
I'm pretty sure the term C9 was actually born from that match alone. But it wasn't just that 1 round they C9-ed. They pulled off the C9 twice on LiJiang and once of Volskaya, 3 in total in that 1 match VS Afreeca. Seriously, how does a team manage to pull of 3 C9s in 1 match. I don't think even Spitfire has reached that realm yet.
Oh yeah, that's what I meant. I wasn't sure if it was multiple tournaments or one. All I recalled was at one point they C9-ed way too many times. C9-ing once is reasonable, but multiple times just means there's something terribly wrong.
Ranx Alter it wasnt tho the one this video showed was worse. The volkaya had a dva bomb and all shields were down so they either had to sacrifice a player or lose. While the video shows them actually winning the fight but losing the map
I hate when in my low diamond game we win a team fight on a map like temple and hanamura and then we boop an enemy of the point as they are about to get on a people say c9 it pisses me off
I once won a comp match for my team 4-3 on eichenwalde because the enemy team decided to spawn trap my team, so I switched off support to Sombra and capped point. Our wrecking ball made a nice rollout and joined me LMAO
The way I’ve always described C9s is when a team has the capability to comfortably be on the objective at a crucial time and they concede something by not being there.
Yes. Some people misuse it whenever someone gets pushed off the point by an ult or something and then loses, but that's not a C9. A C9 is like when someone is capping your point and your whole team is up, but busy on the front lines, and meanwhile tracer is on the point. Was funniest on assault maps.
Still pisses me off when people spam c9 when a team is forced off an objective or can't get to the objective due to enemy ults being used or CC cause that ain't a c9, as they purposefully don't try to get off or on the objective, as they don't forget about the objective, they simply can't, cause they aren't forgetting about it at all. People just want the excuse to spam c9 in chat cause they think it's cool and understand what is it when they really don't, a proper c9 is a rare occurrence, and when it happens, everyone knows it has happened and should be savoured, not fucking wanting it happen every other fricken game.
Like the one with Spitfire versus Gladiators shown in this vid is a true c9 as the player holding the point got off to put pressure on respawns whereas the one with Gladiators versus Outlaws isn't really one because they were forced off by the D.va bomb
Tanner Victorino Yeah to be honest I agree with on that point, the Outlaws and Gladiators clip is halfway to C9 IMO, some players are actively getting off the objective chase down kills, and the dva bomb is forcing others off(I didn't notice the dva bomb first time XD), so yeah not a true c9 but part way there. Thanks for the thoughtful reply :)
that's because its not a C9, its CC. Aka, what some people would call a "forced C9". Similar to getting caught in a Grav and unable to touch the point.
Well, it actually is though and it's called a Geodesic. Considering the regulations of maps and how they are portrayed on a flat surface, that is technically the correct way to show a plane route since it is the fastest path from A to B.
reminds me of an old CSGO play that involved cloud9, in the round there was 3 C9 players alive and 1 enemy left. right before the enemy died he planted the bomb and threw a fire on it, now it takes the bomb 40 seconds to blow up and 7 seconds for the fire to go away, and instead of waiting for the fire to go away all 3 of the C9 players jumped on the bomb and died from the fire losing them the round all because they couldn't wait 7 seconds
I just wish people would stop shouting it when they y'know, successfully defend the point the way they're intended to. 'We outnumber you and forced your surviving players into defeat or death situations, thus preventing them from capping the point. Lol C9!'
Whenever I play with a team, sometimes they’ll incorrectly refer to somethings as C9, usually whenever we win a team fight in point and the enemy team can’t reach it in time. I remember as Lucio I booped the enemy team off the point far into overtime and that caused us to win the round and then win the match later, but my team referred to it as C9.
It’s nice to know that your teammates just 100% forgetting about the point to chase the enemy team to some other part of the map is universal amongst the overwatch ranks
I've only been playing OW for 3 weeks, but now knowing what a C9 is, I realize that I C9'd for my team within the first week of playing. Escorting payload, playing Widow, El Dorado, no one saw me but one guy on our team, the entire enemy team was preoccupied with my teammates and I won the match for my team. That is clearly my best and favorite play ever.
I think my favorite thing to do is during a team fight, and this would be either really early or late game, sneak onto the point during a team fight while everyone else is focused on killing each other and try and cap it, or even move the payload depending on how freakin oblivious people are. I’ve capped the point on Blizzard World by myself without anyone realizing before a few times before as small high mobility characters. Tracer, Widow, and Sombra all work really well for this. Everyone is focused on he choke point and so many people forget how to get around in that it makes this really easy. Also I’ve moved the payload on Watch Point Gibraltar all the way to the first checkpoint at times as Widow because if you aren’t shooting people kinda forget about you. I’ll take a few pics, they’ll hit the choke and then I swoop around to the other side and I’m forgotten as I push the payload. I mean your aren’t gonna get POTG that way obviously but I’ve done it a lot and people just forget you exist until they get the message about the CP.
The meaning is definitely shifting to just if anyone is alive at all without contesting point. Whether they're in a grav or being booped off, it leads to the whole team typing 'C9' regardless.
I won a game once as a baby D'va walking in the payload while both teams were all around me fighting. I didn't even fire because I was too afraid somebody would notice me if I did.
I encountered this recently. I was playing a close, but winning match in Coliseo as Mercy, when towards end of the clock running out the enemy were pushing the robot, but they had to get ahead of us to win. So, we got into a last team fight to stop them, and despite me dying during that fight, we actually won the team fight. However, when I came out of spawn, I witnessed my entire team running after some retreating enemies, but meanwhile they had left a ninja Zarya freely pushing the robot. I kept spamming ''fall back'' and ''regroup'', but none on my team made it in time to help me contest, so the Zarya went on to win them the game. At the end of the match the enemy team were laughing and spamming C9 on the chat, and now I know why.
So glad this has an actual name, because one of my favorite overwatch memories was watching my entire team get wiped while I solo escorted a payload as winston. The enemy team only noticed me after it was too late.
Um no thats completely wrong when he says the meaning changed. C9 always referred to teams losing because they weren't on the point. C9 has done this multiple times in worse situations where they would have capped for map points but were all to busy taking fights.....
FrostDeezAKA what? Then it has changed. Because people use it literally every game end. Even if the other team didn't abandon their winning objective despite winning a team fight.
Um no thats completely wrong when he says the meaning changed. C9 always referred to teams losing because they don't know how molotovs work. C9 has done this multiple times in worse situations where they would have capped for map points but were all to busy taking fights.....
It actually started earlier than OWL, when Cloud 9 C9'd in CS:GO, winning the fight on the point but forgetting to defuse the bomb. All the players were so busy running around getting weapons that nobody defused and they lost the match. (This happened in a playoff game, iirc)
Same thing happened in DOTA 2, C9 team were on the verge of winning but the enemy did a surprise rush push to C9's throne. What ended up happening was none of the C9 players had TPs and had to walk all the way back to their base while looking at it getting destroyed, finally losing the game.
This happened to me yesterday. We had a tracer in our team. She rewinded, but completely ignored the point afterwards during overtime. I was playing Zarya, but I was dead, so I was death spectating the Tracer.
I've been C9-ing for a minute then. Had a Mayhem match where we were getting creamed, but the enemy forgot what game mode they were playing. Ended up carring the objective in the final stretch by myself, and it was priceless when the other team realized what I had done
You guys forgot to mention. That same match, or as far as I remember, the 3rd round was on Garden ( Lijiang ), and Cloud9 had the game, but the same thing happened, where they won the fight, Overtime kicked in, and nobody touched point. The term came into use not because of one, but two instances during the same match. Happy meme-ing kids.
Saved you some time. A term used in the game Overwatch describing the situation when a team leaves the point/payload in overtime, resulting in the other team winning by default.
FYI, the original "C9" moment was a Dota 2 professional game where cloud nine was the first high tear team in a professional tournament to get "back doored" on a platform such as twitch. so basically it just means to get back capped now for overwatch... it became a meme due to the dota 2 community and twitch...
I see a C9 as when your team is guaranteed not to lose the round by just staying on the objective, but you leave it anyway and lose when, for example, pushing a payload during overtime with no enemies around and you move away from it so that overtime ticks down to zero, resulting in a loss for your team. A C9 has to entirely be your own team's fault, not the enemy team's achievement. It doesn't count as a C9 if an enemy caps the objective and you're either a; forced off it or b; getting back-capped by an enemy Sombra, etc.
If your under the impression that a non endemic piece of relatively rare terminology dislcudes a person from playing Overwatch, you my freind are the one that should leave Overwatch
My extensive vernacular has little effect upon my criticism, I merely wish to discourage the sort of toxic behavior you seam to display in your rather elitist comment, if you feel condescended by my rather superior grammar I think your getting the point of why your behavior is untenable.
Justin Seckel you seem so focused on impressing a stranger with your " extensive vernacular" you made some mistakes in your sentence. Like "seam" and the typical "your" mistake.... Sorry bud I'm not impressed
What i always classify it as is when a team has a winning advantage(Pushing the cart to the end) but then proceeds to get off the objective because of greed
The first time I heard the term was when I pulled off a C9 win. My team was attacking on Numbani and I was playing D.Va. we almost pushed the payliad all the way but the defenders managed to wipe us out. They then proceeded to abandon the payload and set up a bunker in the tunnel just past the midway checkpoint. There was a lot of fierce fighting in the tunnel but I thought I spotted movement on the balcony above. Using my rocket boost I went up there to take out a potential sniper but found the room empty. Seeing an opportunity, I exited onto a balcony on the opposite side and used my rocket boost again to reach the completely unguarded payload. Only the enemy Mercy noticed me and tried to stop me but she was too far away to contest. After that, the chat filled up with confused messages and I quickly learned what C9 means. :)
@@mel9641 By the definition in this video and in other places I've checked, my story sounds pretty close if not dead on. The enemy team was so fixated on the battle in the tunnel that they remained completely oblivious to me pushing the payload. ( ' - ' )
So this term can be used, when one team might overextend and gets away from the objective, for the defending team to get an upper hand or for the attacking team to get a cheeky backcap.
I literally played a match earlier on Havana where I solo capped the first point and the enemy team didn’t even notice, I played sym and this was with a bunch of level 10-20’s for anyone wondering
Me and my pals just refer to it as the fuck-up that the defenders pull when the attackers back-cap, which is when they cap the objective behind the enemy teams back because they were focused on pushing us back instead of defending the point.
at 3:15 you made a mistake...it goes to overtime if a team is on the point if Payload: a team is on the payload when less than 3.00 seconds exactly is on the clock when they leave Control: When a team leaves the point after 95% and you made the mercy leave at 2 seconds which means that it should be overtime
dude TH-cam is getting scary. Just recently startet to watch OWL and i quickly understood that C9 is a term for back-capping, but wodered why its called C9. And now 2 days later that suggestion lol nice vid btw ^^
An easy fix would be to put up a big ALERT or WARNING on the screen (HUD) that you're leaving the objective every time there's an overtime or something. That's definitely noob and pro friendly. ;)
ackchyually, the origin of the meme is from dota 2, when whole c9 team forgot to buy scroll of teleport and got defeated by single player that just destroyed whole c9’s base.
People were spamming C9 before Overwatch was even released. It started when a member of Cloud 9 backdoored the Nexus in League of Legends while the rest of the team lost/baited a teamfight. Similar to the scenario posted in this video, but much older

1:11 thank me later . Also play at 1.25x speed
Aaron Bowley agreed the man was stretching it
Pedro Soares not really. Most of the video was actually needed to properly explain what it means, since so many people miss-use it.
Pedro Soares This should have been a useful 2 minute video or a 10 minute money milking one, no use for 5 minutes of nonsense.
One of my favorite quotes of all time is “did they just not touch the point? I guess not”
You guys forgot to mention. That same match, or as far as I remember, the 3rd round was on Garden ( Lijiang ), and Cloud9 had the game, but the same thing happened, where they won the fight, Overtime kicked in, and nobody touched point. The term came into use not because of one, but two instances during the same match. Happy meme-ing kids.
pogchamp?
Saved you some time.
A term used in the game Overwatch describing the situation when a team leaves the point/payload in overtime, resulting in the other team winning by default.
J LUL K E
It should not take you almost 3:30 seconds to answer the question you asked.
C9 Lul
Most of overwatch league chat needs to watch this video
Are people really asking this? Lmao
Intenxsify yes people who have no idea what a c9 is and just spam it after games wether it be on ladder or pro play
Zenopos III also there are streamers like AimbotCalvin who said to just say c9 after a win just to tilt the other team and rub it in.
FYI, the original "C9" moment was a Dota 2 professional game where cloud nine was the first high tear team in a professional tournament to get "back doored" on a platform such as twitch. so basically it just means to get back capped now for overwatch... it became a meme due to the dota 2 community and twitch...
unsub, disliked for mispelling LUL.
henryrule1 Grow up 9 year old
I see a C9 as when your team is guaranteed not to lose the round by just staying on the objective, but you leave it anyway and lose when, for example, pushing a payload during overtime with no enemies around and you move away from it so that overtime ticks down to zero, resulting in a loss for your team.
A C9 has to entirely be your own team's fault, not the enemy team's achievement. It doesn't count as a C9 if an enemy caps the objective and you're either a; forced off it or b; getting back-capped by an enemy Sombra, etc.
If you dont know what c9 means, stop playing OW
Most people use it wrongly anyway
If your under the impression that a non endemic piece of relatively rare terminology dislcudes a person from playing Overwatch, you my freind are the one that should leave Overwatch
Justin Seckel use smaller words. I have a small brain. We all know you don't use that in non formal speech.. You are not fooling anyone
C4:Who are you
C9:You,but stronger
Lord Trinen thats a back cap, not a c9 just sayin
@@mel9641 By the definition in this video and in other places I've checked, my story sounds pretty close if not dead on. The enemy team was so fixated on the battle in the tunnel that they remained completely oblivious to me pushing the payload. ( ' - ' )
So this term can be used, when one team might overextend and gets away from the objective, for the defending team to get an upper hand or for the attacking team to get a cheeky backcap.
It appears that the meaning of the term has evolved after being adopted by Twitch chat with open arms
Thank god someone made a 5 minute video to answer a question that should be a one sentence answer instead.
When the C9 term is so popular it crawls its way into other games like siege because Cloud 9 now has a team in that game
I literally played a match earlier on Havana where I solo capped the first point and the enemy team didn’t even notice, I played sym and this was with a bunch of level 10-20’s for anyone wondering
3:51 I like how it took 5 seconds for a pro team to realize they won the round lol
5:15 listen to the absolute joy of that "C9"
Me and my pals just refer to it as the fuck-up that the defenders pull when the attackers back-cap, which is when they cap the objective behind the enemy teams back because they were focused on pushing us back instead of defending the point.
Such a good channel thanks man.
I already knew what C9 meant, but enjoyed the presentation and was impressed you got an interview with an OWL coach, so have a "like".
at 3:15 you made a mistake...it goes to overtime if a team is on the point if
Payload: a team is on the payload when less than 3.00 seconds exactly is on the clock when they leave
Control: When a team leaves the point after 95%
and you made the mercy leave at 2 seconds which means that it should be overtime
dude TH-cam is getting scary. Just recently startet to watch OWL and i quickly understood that C9 is a term for back-capping, but wodered why its called C9.
And now 2 days later that suggestion lol
nice vid btw ^^
Thanks for teaching us the terms.
An easy fix would be to put up a big ALERT or WARNING on the screen (HUD) that you're leaving the objective every time there's an overtime or something. That's definitely noob and pro friendly. ;)
This might be a bit old, but can you do one of these, explaining what is "peeking"?
C9の意味よくわかりました。
ありがとうございます😊
これからも積極的に使っていきたいと思います!!!!
ackchyually, the origin of the meme is from dota 2, when whole c9 team forgot to buy scroll of teleport and got defeated by single player that just destroyed whole c9’s base.
This video is the epitome of when you’re trying to shuffle in as much useless information as possible to reach word count on an essay
People were spamming C9 before Overwatch was even released. It started when a member of Cloud 9 backdoored the Nexus in League of Legends while the rest of the team lost/baited a teamfight. Similar to the scenario posted in this video, but much older
