    Please check out my updated pretrip inspection video. It has the most current phrasing’s and up to date required elements. We’ve also added an “examiner” who shares which parts were missed at the end of the video.

    I have learned a lot! I have been self employed for 25 years. We do emergency roadside repair for tractor trailers. So I do know the anatomy of a heavy duty vehicle. Even with all my knowledge, the new DOT test is difficult. There is so much to check and inspect and remember. Your videos gave me a good head start!! One of the most difficult things im finding is that the school systems are willing to train drivers but they are not up to speed about all the new rules and procedures. They are also learning as we go. Again, I really have enjoyed your videos! Keep up the good work! Thank you!!

      @@SchoolBusSass When I interviewed with our school district back in January, the transportation manager offered me a route that was opening at the start of this school year, contingent on getting my Class B over the summer. Then Covid delayed everything and shut down/backed up DMV, so I couldnt even get my CLP and start training until just this month. They've been running that route with sub drivers since school started, so it's just been waiting on me to get my license. Felt great when the examiner told me I passed!

      Hey guys, what are the skills videos and are they necessary? I just started my hands on training with the bus today. We went over pre trip. Actually.. my instructor told me to review this video 😊 He said this video helped one of his students pass and not to mention, the bus that is used in this video is the same that I am training with and the same one that I will be taking my road test with. edward lepage, Accidents? During the school year 4500 instances per day in Ohio of people blowing past school busses stopped with red flashers and stop sign displayed. There’s the lion share of accidents. Inattentive or distracted idiot drivers, guess what, you can do your best to avoid them but if one of these accident seeking morons are headed your way not much you can do. Then you have the children in the bus that are clueless of danger because mom and dad don’t teach them about real world consequences of not paying attention. Extremely low situational awareness... but hey they got high score on candy crush.

    I see why there's a shortage on School Bus Drivers now

    • @SchoolBusSass
      @SchoolBusSass  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Bryant, this very well could be a contributing factor to the nation wide shortage our industry is currently experiencing. There are several other contributing factors, which probably have a larger impact than this. The split shift, the overwhelming responsibility/liability placed on the driver, and the compensation not being commensurate to the level of responsibility/liability. Not to mention, it is one of the most scrutinized industries around today. Combine all of that with the fact that while working these particular split shift hours, it is often difficult to find additional part time employment compatible with those hours, needed to elevate that persons salary to an annual livable wage. Most school bus drivers, drive on average, five hours a day. Driving a school bus is not challenging, in and of itself. The responsibility of a school bus driver, however, is enormous! Transporting the most precious cargo on our planet, has been my vocation for the past twenty years. I love what I do and will continue to work to promote and escalate industry standards for all drivers.

The school district is very good at working with the bus drivers....we leave 15 minutes early for our afternoon shift. Ohio CDL manual, states 1/2-3/4 inch play ,

      This is not the only discrepancy between the two organizations

      The pretrip is a lot of repetitive phrasing. Once you learn the front of the bus, much of the information is repeated for back half. You can do this. If you’re in Ohio, I do have an updated pretrip. I recommend it, due to some phrasing changes and we have added an “examiner” element, whom shares what I “missed”, at the end of the pretrip. Many have found the additional changes helpful and easier.

      HiJoe, thanks for the comment and feedback. Good for you on becoming an OBI! There are several additional items not listed or demonstrated , you will need to add for your pre-trip exam. Upper and lower control arms(if present) turbo charger, your front and rear air tanks, your internal CB radio, windshield wipers and fluid, when you complete the pre-trip, also tell your examiner what you do to secure your bus at the end of your run when you bring the bus back to the lot. Set brake, put in neutral, check for sleeping students and items left behind, place empty sign in rear window, fill out any post trip paperwork, ensure all lights and other switches are off, and return keys. I do not have the above information demonstrated, because most people watching are looking to obtain their CDL, and are not required to mention those items for their exam, and I like to focus on what is needed for the state.

    Lord Jesus be with me tomorrow morning when I take my test. I did it on Friday but during the air brake test (when you are being timed for the minute) that the air gauge doesnt drop more than 3psi per minute, I forgot to say during that time I was also listening for any leaks 😔 so it was an automatic failure. I had already did all the other pre inspection 1st and passed all of that. So I have to redo the whole test tomorrow. I live in South Florida and ours is a tad different than yours only by us having to identify and say a few more things...but, I will say your vids have been very helpful because Lord knows, I was tired of studying my 9page paper study guide. I also watched your old pre inspection video and that was done on a bus like the one I will be taking my test with. The only other thing I'm worried about is the Alley dock back up. As we are backing up, our right mirror cant passover a white line as well as making sure the back bumper is centered inside the box marked on the pavement. 🤯 Thanks so much for all your helpful videos Mrs. Therese 👍

      Good morning, Rebecca...
      You’ve got this! I’m relatively certain, you’ll never forget to mention listening for air leaks again. So, no worries there.
      In the Alley dock video, the cones to the right of the bus, represent the, wall. Which is why you want to position yourself about 20 feet to the left of them. That way, when your backing, your mirrors won’t cross the plane of that line.
      You can do it! 😊🚌👍🏻
      All the best to you, Rebecca! If you think of it, let me know how it goes for you today.

    I'm blessed 🙏 I passed the core exam and today was our first day in CDL class B. training.
    the DMV must let you take the Air Break exam "AFTER" you pass General knowledge and then School bus endorsement followed BY Passenger Endorsement! after that's completed then you shall take the Air Break exam ONLY then!
    tomorrow is our first day in the yard listening to thee instructor explaining a thural in cab inspection and open hood pre trip inspection.
    one thing I am concerned about our class is that our instructors let's us go early and we need that full learning hours for a better understanding of the program and safe reasons!
    make sure for anyone going for there school bus exam must have a letter of intent to work to drive a school bus company.
    I will try to post a video clip in the near future but won't show name of company and other sensitive info.
    I learned a lot from this video and we must follow company policy and procedures on what to say the way they want.
    I never in my life knew I would have a wonderful career and is still contingent upon obtaining my hard copy in the mail.
    give this video a thumbs up and drive safe.

    I studied your videos for weeks before test. I did lose points for the lights. I didn’t specify the color of clearance lights on front and rear, he wouldn’t accept “proper color”, also missed for the brake inspection, I didn’t specify there is “no blueing” on drum so that made me fail all of brake system. Also docked points for hoses, he wanted the wording “bulges, cracks or kinks” and lastly was the fire extinguisher, aside from rated, dated and charged he wanted me to specify the needle is in the green.
    This was all on my first test, second test the following week with same tester I only missed 2 points. I feel it depend on facility, staff and if they want to charge you for another $85 test.
    Keep up the great videos

      Congratulations. However I will say this rigorous of testing is extreme . It would be one thing if it was actually about safety training for driving a school bus, but almost everything in this test isn't realistic, and only a mechanic needs to know it. Bus drivers do not need to know most of this. Especially when they do not require drivers to even demonstrate how to open the emergency windows and hatches anymore, but you need to examine bushings, leaf springs, and u bolts.

      Outside of the test or the bus barn thats true. But for your pretripping and especially for the test, you have to leave the seat (and you also have to exit the bus to check your lights) with the key on. One caveat though, if the examiner asks you what you do if you can not visually account for a student that you dropped off or one that you saw at a stop but didn't get on, you MUST tell them "secure the bus and take the key" before you tell them that you get off and look around and under the bus. My trainer told me that is an instant fail if you do not specifically say "take the key".

    Hi Therese, As I said once before you made all the difference in learning to park with the cones, for my school bus test :) I am still struggling with backing into driveways in the country... dark mornings out there are hard enough, but any tips that can really help me get this down? Try as I may I hit the grass :(

    • @SchoolBusSass
      @SchoolBusSass  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, T A
      What a great question! I currently am not driving a country route, though I have in the past. The route was in a smaller community which also bordered the county line. In that location, we crossed left of center, then backed left to have our final position in the correct lane. Difficult to describe, and probably more challenging to understand the concept, without a visual. I'm not sure if this would be a viable option for you to consider, or if there are alternative solutions that might work. Is the area congested? Are there multiple obstacles around? What type of lighting, if any, currently exists? There are too many unknown factors for me to offer you any solid tips for addressing your concern. If you have the opportunity to practice in the daylight hours, the same turnaround, I would suggest you try that first. Also, if you have the ability to practice other maneuvers, like backward serpentine, parallel parking, or three point turns(cul-de-sac). Any and all, skills, practice will ultimately help you. Pivot points are key. Turnarounds on dark, rainy mornings, can be really tricky.

    Hi Therese,
    I just applied for the job at my school district yesterday, hopefully I will hear from them soon, they are looking for bus drivers.
    I have an unrelated question, how do drivers learn routes? Do they have navigation units with preset routes or paper maps? If someone is sick and you need to take another route on short notice, how do you learn it?
    Thank you for making and uploading these great videos, it is much appreciated!
    John.

      Hi John, Thank you for your comment, and what a great question! Very few districts have navigation systems installed on their busses. The technology is too cost prohibitive for most school districts to absorb. Though I cannot speak for every school district, the ones I am familiar with, provide drivers with what's called, a route sheet. They are paper directions, providing the driver with step by step directions and stop locations, on how to navigate through the route. When I am training new drivers, I take them out to practice how to read and follow the route sheet. It can be a very challenging experience for new drivers. The process gets easier, each time you drive. Sub school bus driving can be very challenging, initially. When I first started, I would come in at least 30 min before the route left, get out my local map, to see, where in the city I was traveling to. For me, seeing the area I was traveling to, helped to give me an overview of where the route was, then, the route sheet provided the details and stop locations. I would also highlight all of my turns in one color, and all of my stop locations in another, to help eliminate missing turns or stops. The person you are driving for, should have notes written on their route sheet, to further assist with the subbing process. These notations give additional information only the regular driver would know. I'm very happy to learn the videos have been helpful for you. I hope you hear from the school district you applied to soon. All the best and much success! Therese :)

      Sorry for the delay in my reply. I just discovered your question.
      This was just a demonstration that was filmed in our garage bay.
      Our district pays for one exam, the student picks up any additional exams that may be necessary.

    Thank you Therese Mileti for taking your time explaining us to study the parts of the bus, I failed my test twice because the 1st driving school bus damaged at the road test, the second school instructor forgot to mention that the bus does not use fuses, so guys listen very carefully or do what I did to remember every part of the bus also not every bus is the same model, if you guys go to a driving school ask the instructor what Year and model is the bus, what I did is I download the Bus manual as a pdf and save it on your phone.

      I’m thrilled to learn the video has been helpful for you. Try checking into school districts with board owned busses. They will typically have their own trainers and do a more thorough job training you. You might even get paid training. Trainers through school districts, only train school bus drivers. Most truck driving schools focus on class A vehicles. Just a thought.

    Student drivers will pass if they review this. If I were a critic, (which I'm not) I would mention the DC wiring on the alternator not burnt of frayed, air comp not leaking , and mention the castle nuts and pins in place. Tough job trying to mention everything when you on video. Super Job.

    • @SchoolBusSass
      @SchoolBusSass  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment and feedback. You’re right, if it can leak, you need to tell them, it’s not. I didn’t think we needed to mention the castle nut and cotter key/pin, but never hurts to add it.

      Those items aren’t listed on our states test form so I don’t tell people they need to mention them, can be overwhelming for new drivers as is so I keep it to the requirements only which this video does an awesome job covering.

      All of those and much more are required here in Arizona. We have 192 items that we have to point out and test/explain...in about an hour.

      Typically when you are in a, controlled environment, and on a flat surface, wheel chocks are not required, but each testing facility may have different requirements. Check with yours to see if they are required.

  • @samuelspade889
    @samuelspade889 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is a very good video in order to pass a test, having said that some of what is stated about brakes could lead to a false sense of security. It is not the videographer’s fault, she is just stating what the CDL manual states which makes no sense. Personally I think when you did the 5 mph service brake test that was more important than checking the brake shoe linings. Same with the spring brake activating with loss of pressure.

    • @MobileTaz
      @MobileTaz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both are important. You could have just a sliver of meat left on your shoes and they still stop.. until you get 100 miles into your trip and there's nothing left. It's important to look first before you head out. Yes that is technically the fleet mechanic's job to be on top of regular service items, but ultimately it is your bus (especially if you don't drive the same one every day) and your life and the lives of all your kids are riding on you knowing the condition of your bus before you leave.

    • @samuelspade889
      @samuelspade889 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      MobileTaz, if multiple people are responsible then no one is responsible. Stop and think, before commenting. You read like an f’n parrot. Now f’ off.

    • @MobileTaz
      @MobileTaz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@samuelspade889 Lol. Ok. But before I go I'll leave you with this little tidbit.. if your brakes fail because of something YOU THE DRIVER were supposed to inspect BEFORE EVERY TRIP, you have an accident and people die.. Who do you think is getting thrown under the proverbial bus in the investigation? Ill give you a hint: it won't be the mechanic - unless of course it had been documented that you reported it and it was repeatedly ignored by the mechanic. But even then, youll still bear the majority of the blame since YOU THE DRIVER should not have driven it with dangerously thin linings. Asshole.

    • @samuelspade889
      @samuelspade889 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      MobileTaz, you sound like someone that has zero cognitive abilities. In order to check brake linings and actuators requires removal of all wheels, so if yo can do that in twenty minutes you are correct. Just because a manual written by lawyers states something does not make it reasonable. That is the real test for any law “reasonableness”. Evidently you are a self-appointed expert and a very vulgar person. I also doubt you would talk to me like that if we ever met, so I would suggest you go somewhere and think real hard.

    I had closed course BTW skills today. I passed the alley docking and parallel parking but could not pass the serpentine test. Any tips for that? I try again tomorrow as well as have my air brake and pre-trip evaluated tomorrow. Big day tomorrow. I'm training to drive a Transit bus. I know your knowledge is for a school bus. But they do have some commonalities. Would love to see what you have to say on the serpentine test. Thank you.

    • @SchoolBusSass
      @SchoolBusSass  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jackie, our district just purchased four new, International pusher transit school busses. I believe the pushers are very similar to many public transportation busses. Anyway, I was just out practicing turn arounds and serpentine yesterday, to familiarize myself with how the new transits maneuver. Do you know how many feet there are between each barrel? Is the vehicle you are driving a 72 passenger or 84?
      If you are starting your serpentine with your vehicle forward and to the left of the first barrel, gradually pull the steering wheel to the right. As you are backing, look in your lower left hand mirror, until you see the second barrel come into view. Look carefully, the first barrel you see, may be the third barrel. When the second barrel comes into view and you visually have about a foot of space between the barrel and your rear bumper, gradually turn the steering wheel back to the left, while looking in your lower right hand mirror, to make sure the front end of your bus, misses the first barrel. GO SLOW! You want your rear dual to be close to the barrier when pivoting around the third barrel...as you look in your lower left mirror, turn the wheel left. Just as the rear dual visually looks as if it is just in front of the third barrel. Once you pivot around the third barrel, look to the right and repeat the process until you have completed the maneuver. Your rear duals are your primary pivot points. Watch your lower left and right hand mirrors.
      A visual would definitely be more helpful. I'm not sure the written explanation will translate well. I hope it helps. I will work on an creating a video in the future, but that will not help you for tomorrow.

      Hi Joe, Which region in Ohio will you be taking your OBI certification exam? I would self practice your pre-trip with the inclusion of the eleven additional required pre-service items. I would make certain my pick ups and drop offs follow the steps and verbiage posted in your pre-service manual, which we use in tandem with the T9 form, making certain to hit each talking point for your right hand and left hand drop off speech. When you are driving, remember to make noticeable traffic checks, before during and after each turn and intersection and when passing each roadway.

    • @SchoolBusSass

      Yes,
      Busses are checked twice a year, as well as occasional spot checks throughout the school year. The state highway patrol performs these checks to ensure road worthiness meets state standards/requirements.
