In the beginning, When he asked “what you drinking”? I legit looked at my cup as if I were to reply since I had just taken a gulp. Took by surprise. Father fish is soooo personable 😂❤
I've recently set up a planted tank using your methods. But since I love plants I've used a lot of terrestrial plants with their stems and roots in the water. They have all taken root and are growing successfully. Needless to say, I've planted a lot of aquatic plants inside as well. I'm hoping it will help keep my ammonia in check. You have not only inspired me to start my own dirted aquarium but also driven me to start my own TH-cam channel to document my progress. Thank you, Father Fish, for making fish keeping simple for a beginner like me :).
Cheap Walmart picture frames also come in a good variety of sizes. That glass works very well for tank covers. I have several tanks covered with those panels. They are a little thin, but as long you don't set anything real heavy on them, they will be good.
Thank you so much Father Fish. You have changed my life forever in regards to fishkeeping. You reignited my love for the hobby! Thank you sir. I cannot believe you’re over 80, you are SO with it still. God bless!!
outstanding I learned everything I know about planted tanks from this channel and my current planted tank is by far the best I've ever had in my ten plus years of fish keeping
I have 4 and all my first planted tanks so i guess you can say im making out alright never had a fish die off just ones that come in sick from a store. 😂 I learned 4” long plecos are a bad idea for planted tanks on my own
Replay crew here. thank you for sharing all these valuable knowledges. I've finished re-setup my tank to deep substrate 4 days ago and I will introduce some leaves and water from resurrection jar soon. much appreciate from Thailand, ขอบคุณครับ 🙏
Hi father fish. Steve from Plymouth in the UK So after watching quite a few of your videos I decided to break my tank down. Rid the gravel ! I didn't go as far as dirt because I saw you add a lot of extras , but did put In a decent layer of plant food and covered the lot with sexy sand Got a fresh plant collection Replanted I have added live bacteria And hope to start adding the fish back over maybe 4 / 5 days. It's completely wondrous how much I believe I have learnt from you in such a short period of time. Thankyou so much !
@@FatherFish I didn't use dirt as one of your videos when you did the tank for the woman in the care home you added several different ingredients some of which I would assume some type of plant food or fertiliser ? But instead I used an inch layer of well washed plant substrate and my sand is around 3 inch thick so I would hope or guess there should not be leeching into the tank. Other than that I could have taken a chance on just earth which may be have been very poor in nutrients. The tank looks great with the sand and is heavily planted so I hope its a step forward in creating a more eco environment for the fish and to see how the sand and plants deal with waste. Thanks again
Like you FF I hope the skeptical will will set up a test. A simple 1 gallon clear glass vase is perfect! I pick them up at Goodwill for little of nothing. Glass food jars. A case and life are extremely reasonable. I keep some in the SUV, My pickup, the boat, and my dump truck. I grab specimens everywhere. Some are fantastic under the microscope, other not so much. I've found that smell is a good indicator of specimens after a week or tow of 80° and good sunlight. They sit on my back porch covered with cotton cloth. Plants, and FF dirt cover. I use natural drown river sand. At a asphalt plant it comes in corse, and fine.As we both know fresh wet is always better ( microbes from the Mississippi river ). A lot of my plants are local from creeks, and ponds. I mostly use pond plants in aquariums with very little water movement. Also duck weed likes mostly still water. Depending on purpose of the aquarium. I collect fish. Guppy breeding is mostly still water. Plecos in faster moving water. Angel Fish in water moving in one end of the aquarium and less in the other end. This is accomplished with plants as a water brake. It also gives my mating pairs a territory boundary for breeding. Sitting back and watching the plants, Fish, and substrate differently insurance happy healthy aquariums.
Hi ff! I just this weekend added pothos cuttings and also smaller pothos with roots already established in potho carry holders to the back of my 55 gal heavily planted dirtied and sand capped tank, mopani driftwood and pond stones as decor, 2 sponge filters and air stones. I am hoping to drop my nitrates level with the cuttings as I have no more room for in tank plants. My tank has plant grow lights and has glass covers. Plants growing like crazy. I’ve had it going for 6 mos now. I have found with my extremely hard well water here in MD my tds comes straight out of well at 466, ph 7.4, nitrates 30-40, kh 12 & gh 21. I had only been topping off what evaporates with straight well water. When I test my water with liquid test kit I ended up with high nitrates-off the charts but no kh and ph 6.4. I have 10 rummynose and 6 neon tetras, 2 dwarf gold gourami, 2 pitbull pleco, 8 ottos, 5 corys and cherry shrimp colony. I have lost 2 plecos and 2 rummynose (original to tank)in 2 weeks, days apart. For now the other fish look and act normal . Could a ph swing due to no kh may be the reason? It normally is at least 7 ph. Would you suggest a partial water change with distilled /drinking/RO water or some mix to refill, and can you suggest something to raise my kh & ph without altering other parameters please? Any advice is much needed and appreciated. Thank you, Ladeana❤☮🐠🦐🪴
High minerals and low carbonates. Odd for MD with its deep well carbonates. Where are you located in MD? Add calcium to get the Ph up. Plants are thriving due to the high nitrates. Not a problem.
@@FatherFish I am in Hagerstown in Washington county, about 30 min from Thurmont. The well is about 300’ deep. Leaves white deposits on everything so we have a water softener on the house but I get water straight from the well pump by our barn. What form of calcium do you suggest? Crushed coral, other? I understand I shouldn’t adjust ph too quickly. Thank you for answering and advising❤
Father what do you think of bio filtration pellets? I just got a new filter and it comes with a tiny amount but I wasn't sure if it was a scam. I already have a deep sand bed as per your advice
Also if you want something thats way cheaper and accomplishes the same goal (increased surface area for bacteria) use lava rock/pumice stone. All that bio ball stuff is way overpriced for what it is.
I am new here and I AM AMAZED. You are so knowledgeable, and so generous to share. I cant wait to move my tank to a natural one! Gotta slow down...gonna watch more of your videos. And...what is a wrench?
Can you make a video about fixing a tank that is cycled and successful as in no deaths yet but how to improve it more towards the natural tank? Without starting over? I do use botanicals and have used a sand cap now but now what? 😅😅😅
I seem to have caught a crayfish in my resurrections jar. It seems relatively large. What do I do to keep it alive and what do I do with it when I'm ready to add to my aquarium?
Father fish. I'm in Minnesota, and I had a shallow pond I created in my yard this summer. I had reg goldfish and 1 placo in my pond. The night temps are dropping below 50 at night. So, I set up my tank, the way you taught me via videos. The fish were brought inside, acclumated to the water a week ago. One of the plants (found in a local lake) was releasing a lot of small pieces of plant. The fish were eating like crazy. I netted out as many as I could. Yesterday, I noticed I wasn't seeing any of my smaller fish. I found them dead. I removed all that I found dead. Then I set up my 2nd tank, in attempt to save the remaining fish. Over night, all my fish were gone. I lost all my fish. Did I do something wrong? Devastated in minnesota
Gold fish toleratye freezing temps. No need to remove them unless the pond could freeze solid. Moving them into a tank with their own water was the correct fix.
@@FatherFish yes. Pond is very shallow. Would easily freeze solid. Only 2 feet deep. Was just for a relaxing space, with a fountain. Just very sad they all died a week later
@maryrosegeorge835 2hen goldfish is threatened they release a toxin and can cause very high ammonia spikes. And with soil in the tank also.can get ammonia spikes. So have to watch that really closely. Let it truly cycle.
So fluval stratom is not really all that good???, and needs a 2" layer of sand???. I already have about 1/2" to 3/4" of sand, im gonna add alot more. I know a added repens all over the front, and a ozelot sword in back along woth a huge anubius nana and still got a huge hair algae bloom after 2 weeks....

do not add it to your aquarium. It will kill and eat everything.
How long do you leave the light on in your 20 year old aquarium? Thanks

any sand that is inert

The dirt will ‘push’ through the sand and foul the tank
