"It's a young man's song," is so true! I remember trying to reach those crescendos in my car, in the shower, middle of the woods... where no one would be subjected to the auditory torture of my failures. But sometimes, I nailed it. And there's no in between, you either nail it, or you sound like a cat being burned alive. I can still hit the "ooooh's" but those "aaaaaaah's!" are way out of my range, and that makes me nostalgic.

It's not screaming, and it's not just a high key of a tone. It literally is a sound coming from his soul which hit the people who's listening this master piece.
His epic long scream at the end of Strange Kind of Woman from Made In Japan is still echoing round the Osaka Festival Hall.
Blackmore's solo is one of my favorites for the past 50 years.

@@leahrose2751 I don't think anyone who's interacted with Gillan or watched or read interviews with him would describe him as a prima donna?! He's very down to earth. Blackmore is another matter..an utter guitar genius, but very strange, egotistical and difficult.
It is staggering... light and shade. When he switches pick ups from the bassy neck sound to the trebly bridge... wow! I don’t know if anyone else had done that to that point. It is phenomenal.
I believe it's the only Deep Purple song in which Blackmore plays a Gibson.

It can't be better, a fantastic song ,a perfect band and a phenonenemal Ian ,my all time favourite performer and singer.
The greatest heavy metal singer ever.
He did sing it occasionally when Steve Morse joined the band, but he struggled with the highest part,so stopped doing it. Then in 2002 I saw Purple and they played the song, the first time since 1995 (Def Leppard's Joe Elliott was also there) and Ian hit that top section beautifully, I had tears in my eyes and the entire place was on it's feet at the end of the song, giving Ian a well deserved standing ovation. I will never forget it.
I saw Deep Purple again last year and when Ian sang"When a blind man cries" even Roger clapped in his hands . That too was fantastic. At his age he still sings beautiful.
I never knew that, I assumed 1993 was the last time they did the song, as Blackmore left the band that year, Ian figured he never had to sing it again. But turns out they did it a couple of times later on, interesting
no one would ever tempt those vocals screams of gillians so original for those times

The more I see Gillan in interviews, the more I see he’s just the Best type of human being. Humble and down to earth.

Gillan is a pure genius. When you think he can't do any higher, thats it, he just DOES. Great band of Golden Age of rock.
He does a version of this on one of his solo albums that is incredible.

One of the best songs ever in Rock, I don't know why it doesn't make it to the top 5 every year like Bohemian Rhapsody and Stairway to heaven. The guy from Gretha Van Fleet could sing it now.
I agree! In fact, I think it would be easier on him than it was for Gillan, the guy has a higher voice to begin with.
It is in american ranking magazines or webs so. But the rest world easily put this song into some top ranks. Deep Purple very popular in Europe and Asia.
And Alteria from Strange Kind of Women can do it nicely.

35 years ago, 13 years of age, hearing Child in Time for the first time, this was very much a revelation to me: was it really possible that music could be like...THIS??? The song has been my favorite ever since.

I love Deep Purple. They created some of the best hard rock songs in that amazing era of music. However, Child in Time remains my favorite D P song, its fantastic.
I remember listening to this Song as a kid with headphones on and screaming out load until my parents would come into my room and flip off my stereo!!!
First time I heard it was at a Purple show. I turned to my buddy and said "Holy shit, what song is this??" It was a transcendent experience that I still feel every time I hear it

Brilliant. The first time I hear this song, it blew my little 16-year old mind.
I saw Deep Purple live in Toronto after they had reunited for the Perfect Strangers tour. They were absolutely fantastic and played two of my absolute favourite tunes, both from In Rock, Child In Time and Speed King. I’d like to have heard Flight Of The Rat, but no complaints at all. Gillan amazed me with the high notes in Child In Time. Heck he even screamed the names of the band members as he introduced them. “Ladies and gentlemen, on the drums: IAN PAICE!!!!” Well I never knew they borrowed the tune from an instrumental band.
I saw them on that tour.Holy fuck,they kicked serious butt.
It's A Beautiful Day is not really an instrumental band. Their big song was White Bird and definitely has vocals.
Saw them on same tour at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin. I would have loved to hear Flight of the Rat, that tune ROCKS. The night I saw them they played for a long time and the song I remember most was Black Night. Awesome version. Smoke on the Water was one of the encores...Glover and Blackmore switched instruments, Ritchie on bass (Steinberger) and Roger on Strat (not too bad). Ian Paice did a drum solo after he 3rd song that night. He is an exceptionally incredible drummer.

I was 20 in 88 when deep purple got back together original members and a warm up show at HAMMERJACKS in Baltimore for tour. I was 5 feet away from Gillian, blackmore, lord,paice...wow!!! Over 200 shows and this ranks in top 3

That singer from Focus is another with an operatic voice. He lost it as he got older though, so it is a young man's talent.

Saw the 74' Tour in Duluth Minnesota, Blue Oyster Cult Opened! It's still the Memory of those that survived. My Hands still vibrate from the Oncore's!
He said he didn't sing it again but we know that he did. I was at the Cow Palace in 89?88? Reunion show and I have to say that he went to the high notes and even higher. I was standing at the sound booth and when he went to the high note, he stumped me by going even higher than I thought anyone could, and I literally had to piss from the vibration through my body. No exaggerating.
It was in the set in the 1980s, but it fizzled out in the 90s as Ian wouldve blown his voice. Since Steve Morse joined theyve played it a few times here and there, but it was never again in the basic setlist
In 1987 I was at a concert of the original DP doing Child in Time. Still gives me the shivers thinking back...

Mr. lord....i miss you often, as a multi instrumentlist filled with idea's going though all the regions, playing somewhat uptempo classical to pure rock, hoe do you re-read beethoven but keep it to the enjoyment of hundred thousands...I'm here to fill myself with rock...bamm....tchaikovsky takes the stage by Jon...and the crowd goes wild....classical trained tho a rocker at heart...what he desiggned and defined.....wow.... An upright salute to this musical momentum...sadly passed away, but man..what a legacy !!! and not front-stage but from the back he did his thing claiming his place ,thats Deep Purple ! deep respect for Jon Lord !! non can surpass you !

Deep Purple are the greatest live band, ever.
They play with just the right mix of technique and emotion.
Many bands today play with better technique, but haven't got the emotion. And certainly not great songs.

What a great interview. It's always a shame to me that Stairway, Smoke or Bo Rap get all the acclaim as 'the greatest song' blah blah but performers like Gillan here or Halford on Victim of Changes don't get anything like the applause they deserve. All great songs...
not a metal fan myself, but rob halford`s vocals on "victim of changes" are absolutely incredible.
Yes, Child in Time is probably DP at its best. Maybe even rock at its best, although Perfect Strangers is almost neck and neck with it.
I miss live shows.... was at DP at hammerjacks in Baltimore 1988 reunion with all original members. Talking about a badass show. Ive been to over 200 shows and this one was in my top 3. Lord's keyboard and blackmore in that small club was astounding.
Victim of Changes should definitely be in the top 2000.
Smoke is not a great song but a great riff. Queen in Bo Rap is their utmost best, but Led Z - Stairways nice, but hey, Zep just is No Ballad Band. They do lots better than Stairway - and in the best LZ you must hear why Bonham is such a great drummer - don't hear that, not in Stairway.
Child however, is an anthem of Rock.

The show these docs come from is literally a Top 2000, of best songs ever. Originally, Dutch independent radio Veronica kicked it off as the Top 100 of all times. That was mid 70's, and Child in Time ruled, every single time between 73 and 84, it was thee No 1. Stairway to Heaven came close, but ended runner up nearly every time.
OK, later on, Freddy & Queen took over, Bohemian Rhapsody is a kick ass song, but if i had to choose ..
Ok, honestly I'd choose a Doors song as thee number One. But between those 3, Child in Time, any time.

Big thanks to San Francisco's It's a Beautiful Day or Purple's epic would never have been born. Think the last time they ever performed the track live was about 2002 (just after Don Airey joined).

@@williamtomkiel8215 i managed to get their first two albums (It's a Beautiful Day and Marrying Maiden) off Amazon UK a few years ago. They were rereleased as a 2cd set. However there is no cover art (something to do with copyright). Both excellent albums, very good musicianship.
Bought Deep Purple in Rock when it first came out - Used to drive my Dad crazy when "Child in Time" came on - he actually liked loud music normally. Still one of my favorite tracks.
Always terrified me that tune ! I’ve heard of it’s a beautiful day but now I’m off to discover more !
