I'm not too familiar with Pete rose but to me it seems he could be a liability on live commentary I can easily see him saying something he shouldn't on the air lol. I met Pete in Vegas a few years back and ask him about the game where he went 5 for 5 against the Dodgers. He went into great detail about his at bats that game it just blew my mind. It was if he just played the game yesterday. The guy is a walking baseball encyclopedia. Incredible knowledge of all facets of the game.

Nothing better than listening to old timers talk baseball. The memory is astonishing of the stats, years, names that they can recall. Simply a treat to listen to.
Pete Rose is the man. No disrespect towards Jeter though. I always will love Derek Jeter for being a 5 time world series champion and leader of a great dynasty of Yankees baseball. But the final comment made by Pete was sensational. "If you get a lot of 2 strike base hits with a man on second you got a great chance at winning a lot of games."

Funny thing is juiced balls hasn't even helped with popularity. It just means guys are willing to strike out more if it means they can get a home run so 90% of the game is now watching strikeouts and pitching changes until we get to that occasional homer.

This old man has more charisma, knowledge, energy, and will to win than any manager or player in MLB. He is the modern day Ty Cobb that we actually got to see in action. He belongs in the Hall of Fame because he is superior in talent and hustle over anyone there except Ty Cobb. Roberto Clemente, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Honus Wagner, Rogers Hornsby, Lou Gehrig, Stan Musial etc. Those are his only peers, all of the top vote getters.

Comes to the Phillies in 1979 and in one year, pushes the underachievers Schmidt, Bowa, Trillo et al over the top and in 1980, they win their first World Series in their 97 year history. And Pete made an unbelievable hustle play in the last inning of Game 6 to seal it.

I guess I am a grumpy, cranky curmudgeon too because I agree with most of what Pete Rose is saying. There is no 2 strike approach says yes dude but I think his point was that it is out of fashion now....Pete says (quite correctly I think) that you get that 2 strike approach in enough of a team's players and you're going to win more games. Hit the ball hard but don't necessary swing overly hard....the ball might go out sometimes but swing for contact and you'll score more runs with 2 strikes and RISP.
That's not being grumpy and cranky. That's just being smart. Make contact. Get the single to drive in a run. Put the ball in play and move the runner over. The way batters strike out nowadays, it's like they want to break the strikeout record as much as the home run record. I think it's sad because if a pitcher is able to get to 3,000 strike outs now, won't be as big an accomplishment since everyone's trying to swing for the fences.

I love listening to the knowledge Pete Rose possesses. I can listen to him all day talk sports. He’s so right about baseball today. When Pete played, baseball was fun to watch. It’s not all about homeruns. The game needs to be played correctly. There use to be line drive hitters, speed on the base paths, pitchers who went the distance and usually your guy batting clean up in 4th place, had the power and was a pull hitter.

I know today's MLB has some amazing athletes. But I am still glad I grew up watching baseball in the late 60's and 70's when the players were focused on the game, had skills and baseball IQ. No drama queens, just tough men for the most part.

Pete Rose said he was the best pitcher he ever faced. My brother loved Marichal, Mays and Mantle. He and my Dad went to Yankee and Shea Stadiums throughout the late 50's all through the 60's and saw all the greats. Different time....

@Over Under Sideways Down I had the National League experience too. I was 8 when we moved from New Jersey to St. Louis. So most of my experience was Busch Stadium and the Cardinals. Although I do remember going to a few games in Yankee and Shea Stadium. I did see Mantle hit a home run. Yes, I agree that $$$ is a big part of the problem. When players had to work hard to get into the Majors and still had to work another job in the off-season it made them salty and hungry to play. I think we should count ourselves lucky to have experienced those days. I watch an occasional play-off game and some World Series now. But mostly I just catch highlights on TH-cam. I like to see good defensive play. There are some amazing players with the glove still.

Batting averages have dropped from .269 in 2006, which is the first year MLB instituted its league wide drug testing policy, to .245 recently. The lowest since 1972. So if you wanna believe the juice heads knew how to hit then be my guest. Another fact is that hitters face more specialized relievers than ever before, with fresher arms available earlier in the game. In 2006, teams used 3.85 pitchers per game. This season, that number is 4.33, which is the highest in major league history. The less often a batter sees a pitcher in a particular matchup, the worse they do. So overall it’s not the batters who are trying to hit bombs, that’s not what teams do. They use the stats they have available to win and by using more arms and less dudes on roids yeah there will be more strikeouts. This will not change at all.

@Oskar Dirlewanger Absolutely true, in fact I would add "SOLELY", because of Chapman they won the World Series, in addition because of the overuse by JOE MADDEN, Chapman has not been the same, can't find the strike zone, walking people, struggling to cover 1st, even not knowing which base to throw to, plus shoulder rotator issues.
The SAME happened to C.C. Sabathia when the Brewers overused him in the playoffs, pitching a crucial game on 3 days rest. NEVER the same pitcher from Cleveland, certainly not with the YANKEES.

Regardless of people's perception of Pete Rose I admire such a legendary figure. He possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of the game of baseball ⚾️. Love listening to him and take his opinion very seriously. No matter where you stand I think he should be let back into professional baseball to manage a team and yes belongs in the Hall of Fame. Free agency has ruined it for me. From metro detroit. Last year 4 of the best pitchers former tigers, verlander the only one traded. Your team wins 85 games, your excited for next year because you have young talent on the team and in the minors. Looks like, if things go well, your in the playoffs. In the off season, 2 of your best pitchers leave and one of your best hitters. The team goes 80 and 82. Then they wonder why attendance is down?
What your solution? Bring back the reserve clause? FA is the only vehicle for the players, who are the product, to get market value.

pete's right!!! the game is a joke..it's strike out or home run. it's no coincidence with strike out machines andujar, judge and stanton on the dl the yankees took off. when the latter 2 come back this team will fold up. mark my words.
They all struck out too much but it seemed to me Andujar did a bit better on the ratio of strikeouts though he hardly ever walks--- not selective enough. stanton I thought was usually one of the less dependable bats in the Yankee line-up last year and at that price it is a shame. Judge seemed a bit better though still could improve his strike-out rate (and this year I think is much improved on that- until he got injured).
I agree about Andujar and Stanton, but I've seen Judge come up big in clutch situations (playoffs too). He may strikeout a ton, but he also has a consistentc .400+ OBP. This year, before he got injured, he seemed to shorten up with two strike and hit the ball the other way for singles. He's made it clear that he's aware of the strikeout problem and I really saw an improvement this year with him. Now combine that with his homerun power and he's slowly becoming a complete hitter.
Judge and Stanton are great baseball players in any era and only help a club they're on. You're out of your mind if you think them coming back will hurt the yankees
Puff maybe not judge, but having Stanton back might change the approach of the Yankees hitting. Now if Stanton doesn’t play selfish baseball like last year, by swinging at 3-0 pitches out of the strike zone trying to hit a homerun all the time, then he could help this team out. But judge would definitely help the Yankees out on both sides of the ball.
Andujar is not a strikeout hitter. However he doesn’t have a lot of plate discipline therefore he rarely walks.
They definitely don't make them like Pete Rose anymore. I can hear him talk baseball all day. These guys today should really listen to what he has to say. He has over 4000 hits, his nick name was Charlie Hustle!!
