I met her in 2002 at the Stafford Hotel in London. He responded by telling me the story of the “White Mouse”. What an honor to meet such a hero.
Back in 2004 I was at a large reception party for Australia Day in London. At the Australian High Commission I noticed an old lady in a wheelchair wearing a few miniature medals. The old lady was being ignored by all the careerist diplomats and military personnel there. I decided to talk with the lady. I was surprised to learn who she was. Later that evening, the High Commissioner welcomed and recognised her. For me a memorable moment and a privilege to meet her.

What an incredible story. She was a true heroine. Not a singer onstage earning millions, nor a sportsman running around an air conditioned court being driven around in stretch limousines. Well told. I thoroughly enjoyed it 👏👍
People are a product of their time. If a world war wasn't thrust on Nancy she would've become an unremarkable rich man's wife. Not sure why we should desire to live in 'interesting times' so that people don't sing or do athletics for money.
I knew about Nancy years ago. I’m also from New Zealand. Believe me, she was quite tough and could drink anyone under the table. I wrote to her when she was in the care Home in England. The then Prince Charles paid for her to be there. I offered to get her anything she needed but I don’t think she could manage to write back. A very special individual.

If only young people were taught more about heroes and heroines like Nancy Wake! It would cause some to think again about our dubious celebrity culture. the veneration of the vapid and materialistic .
Another interesting lady that I had never heard of was Nora Inayat Khan aka Nora Baker who was sent by the SOE to Paris to work with the resistance (India was part of the British Empire at this time). I can’t imagine the risks she took being a black woman in Paris. Unfortunately, she was eventually caught and executed.

One of PBS Masterpiece Theater's Foyle's War episodes covered the heroic, all too often tragic history of these amazing human beings. So many were the best and the brightest young women...lost to betrayal or official incompetence. We owe so much to all of them.
I remember reading about her in an old SOE book I bought years ago. I'm glad this video will make more people become aware of her as she's definitely worthy of remembrance

Nancy was one of many female SOE operator's, Just u tube SOE WW2 and you will bev ery surprised. Not just in France, but North Africa. Ms Granville was Churchills favourite, Ms Kaur was another fantastic lady
I do have the courage, & many do, but unfortunately I myself am not the right age but more importantly-- this is the age of drones and AI with no humans being of Paramount importance in the battles that occur. THE Israel Terrorist Force --otherwise known as the IDF/ITF--NEVER go into a land until they first have bombed it for many many weeks till there's nothing left & all the humans are dead. THEN they go in shooting --hitting usually women and children or the people who were wounded-- shot in the knees earlier --and have been bleeding to death or actually have bled to death. You will notice in this new war there are no heroes. The age of technology which has interlaced itself into warfare and the weapons that are used have made heroism mute. I do not actually believe in warfare but the type of warfare we have now will never resolve anything due to the age in which we live.
Who on earth are these Israeli Terrorists you speak of.? One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, I was told in my Law classes. That's pretty shocking statement to say Israeli (who answer to God Almighty) do what Hamas did. Kill indiscriminately. Defend and have to clear....but ???? Is there evidence for war crimes?
My father was middle child of 11 brothers in Eindhoven, as a teenager throughout the war, he risked his life countless times sabotaging German equipment. It was like a game to him according to my uncles, he hated nazi soldiers
because this type of heroic and patriotic behavior is not welcomed by the zionist hollywood. plus it has character building aspect. they want woke not strong characters

Also very fit, well trained top shots, great athletes undergoing rigorous training, superb actors, ruthless as lovers, wily and close combat experts especially with knives.
This is not only the story of a remarkable and brave woman but it is beautifully told. The wonderful drawings are evocative of the time and full of French charm.
I knew Nancy Wake in Port Macquarie NSW Australia. She was a distant counsin. Her second husband was a retired British RAF officer. The last book about Nancy was not an autobiography but was written by former Australian Rugby star Peter Fitzsimmons. My wife and I attended the Port Macquarie launch of the book. It was published shortly before she left Australia to return to the UK.
My goodness, we owe so much to this wonderful woman, Nancy Wake. She & so many did do much to ensure future generations stood a chance, had a future. The drawings, paintings told her stories beautifully as well. Time to checkout her book.
There is a film about her and how the SOE was formed. The film is on TH-cam and is called 'A CALL TO SPY'. Definitely a good film to watch. You can also purchase the film on dvd from Amazon or HMV stores.
It is unfortunate that so many people who worked like this in the shadows don't get the respect that they should. This is obviously due to the nature of their work.
Yes Simon. Apparently it was hardly ever mentioned by the SOE and they were on their own if captured. They knew this of course. Bravery is an understatement.
Nancy was my hero and an inspiration for me from childhood onwards. A very remarkable and special woman. She also has a most fantastic cocktail drink named the White Mouse, superb taste. Cheers Nancy, your courage and grit helped me to face a number of very hard times throughout my life 🙏🏼🍸
Thank you for this video! I know that many courageous women stood and fought against the Nazis, but had never heard her name before. Now I will look for her book and others about her. Well done!
Thank you! Women that saved us from the Nazi horror going on for decades are heroines not praised enough. God Bless her. Thank you for this most enlightening piece of history.
What a courageous, brave, clever and fearless woman..!! I do not think I had ever heard of her. But recently, I had also watched a video here of another French Resistance woman who was known for having a wood leg and who did some very similar heroic things for the Allies. The worst of times can sometimes sure bring out the very best of people. These two women, and of course countless other women & men during WWll, also showed incredible courage and willingness to sacrifice to save others.
Salute to Mdme Nancy Wake, exemplary capabilities and fearless to operate behind the lines. The bravery of the French Resistance is greatest in WWII…surrounded by betrayers and the Gestapo. I bow my head to her, one of the greatest heroins in history 😔 I’m very glad she survived the war and had a life in Australia. Another first class…best in class…WWII documentary Philip 👏👏👏👏👍👍
An extremely brave woman. Truly inspirational. Some of our country folk should take note of her determination, courage, resolve and loyalty. Very rarely does someone of this calibre come along, and she was there when the free world needed her. Praise and honor. Thank you.😍
What an amazing story. As Hollywood keeps making the same movie stories over & over, one would think they would do something with a great story like this. Thanks so much for your content & I subscribed.
As long as they DON'T get Cate Blanchet to play Nancy. Or Nicole Kidman . Can't stand either of these pretentious Aussies. I'm an Aussie too. I admire humble actresses.
There is a film already called 'A call to spy' which tells the story of how the SOE was formed and Nancy Wake is one of those agents in the film based on the true story. Well worth a watch and you can see the full film on TH-cam if you search for it. I watched it only yesterday after scrolling through the films. I have a copy of it also on dvd which I purchased on its release not that long ago. If you haven't seen it before it is definitely worth watching.
She gives me much courage. No fear and teaches us to be believers of the heart and do without looking vmback. So much to learn and practice from this movement
I am glad I am now learning about you, Nancy, and your amazing, brave, gorgeous life. I am so very happy to now learn that those SOBs didn't get you and that you lived to almost 100 years of age. WELL DONE!!! I'm trhilled to also know that nancy made it to Spain, where I now live, with the others after hiking The Pyrenees. You were one righteous person Nancy .... thank you.
I have read many stories of such bravery but wow this lady was something else. What a girl. So brave and I can not find the words to say what needs to be said. So pleased she managed to not get caught. I salute you Madam.
⛔️ It is a shame that lots of ladies from this generation's role model are cardi b or Kardashian family instead of someone like Nancy who's symbol of love, strength and resilience. I am not even British or French and even I am proud of her, R.I.P Nancy, you always be remembered as a true hero.
What a wonderful story! I must get her book! I'm sure there are other women whose stories we don't know. I for one would appreciate learning about them. God bless them all.
At the completion of World War 2, the highest decorated female SOE officer was Christine Granville ( real name, Krystyna Starbek ), however, she was murdered by a spurned lover in 1952.Nancy Wake became the most highly decorated because grateful nations periodically issued new medals to heroic individuals who were able to attend ceremonies.
I think it was a bit more than that, Nancys recognition was not just any old set of medals from the French government - they were the highest possible ones that could be bestowed on any individual, man or woman.
Great video. Combinations of fate, love and skills. The passion, boldness and perseverance of such people ease the pain of many. Very interesting stories.
Whilst I agree with you as a fellow Kiwi, to my knowledge our NZ government has yet to acknowledge Nancy with any award or recognition. I think they left it to the Returned Services Association to honour her. It is a matter of deep shame for the NZ gumberment in my view. They trot out some lily livered excuse that she never served in any NZ branch of the services.
Well, to be fair, she left New Zealand at the age of 2, and never returned. She grew up in Australia, and the Australian government awarded her the second highest honour (Companion (AC)) below Knighthood/Damehood (which is an inactive order).
Excellent summary of a brave woman, along with the other heroes of the resistance. It's hard to fathom. I do believe that in addition to her bravery, she endured a limp that made her treks even more admirable. She is a part of why we all enjoy a thing called "freedom". Thank you for video@
@@PhilipThompson Virginia Hall had a limp because she had a wooden leg. Before the war, she was hunting and accidentally shot herself in the foot. Gangrene set in and she had to opt for having it amputated below the knee. She was another woman who gave the Germans fits. Hall ran the most agents in the field of espionage in shortwave radios and resistance.
I admire and respect Nancy. She had the courage and the stamina to follow through. Was there ever a miniseries or a movie about her? If not, there should be.
There is a film called 'A CALL TO SPY ' which features the story of Nancy Wake and other agents in it based on the true story of the founding of the SOE. Definitely a must see film. You can find it on TH-cam if you search for it. .
I've seen many different versions of the "Nancy Wake story", but this one is unique with it's unexpected charming and luminous illustrations. Beautiful work, evocative of magazine and paperback artwork from a certain era. It's nostalgic, very fitting for the true story of a WWll heroine of the resistance. The narrator's voice is also soothing, clear and the words are perfectly enunciated. Thanks very much: a good way to wind down after a hectic week.
Alana Google Nancy Wake, the White Mouse. There is a movie about her and her biographer and some historians fill us in with more details of her amazing life. I like the movie so much I return to it often. Each time I'm amazed at her courage and wonder if that kind of courage still exists.
My uncle was killed by nazis as a hostage in 1944, my other uncle was sent to Italian camp as in 1944 was ambushed transporting food and medical stuff to the Slovenian resistance. My mother was captured by the Gestapo and put into concentration camp, to escape from a death transport when the camps were panickly emptied by the nazis. My father almost died in concentration camp, where he was jailed as a member of the Slovenian resistance. I hope that Nancy and millions of brave people who made our proud European history will never be forgotten. In the wake of ignorance we are experiencing right now, let us prize and support our EU unity and identity.
I too read her story by peter fitzsimon, what a story about this brave woman, a true hero, this was a very good video, it explained a few things more graphic than in the book, her beloved dog picon also survived which was wonderful RIP Nancy you will never be forgotten❤
A very interesting and absorbing account of the life and deeds of a very brave and noble woman. Such a great soul ❤. The artwork accompanying the video is also very beautiful. I wonder who the artist is.
Fantastic art! In the style of John Singer Seargent. Who the heck was the artist!? This artist is going unappreciated! Please, if you know about this artist, let the world know who also. Discover this artist, please!!!
John Singer Sargent was very well known portrait painter. American, but lived in London during Edwardian era. He was very successful and very much admired for his technical skill.
Such a daring resistance would not be possible nowadays. Digital face recognition, satellite surveillance, thermal and night vision etc. One would have to be extremely tech savvy to escape.
This young generation knows little of WWII heroism amongst those who actively resisted Nazism. More needs to be done to bring these true life stories to the forefront as examples to this generation which might not exist had it not been for their sacrifices.
One thing us older folk can do: get local libraries to stock copies of her story. If it's not there, how do schoolchildren get to read the entire story?
This is a truly wonderful narrative about a woman I'd never heard of. I shall be buying her book to learn more about her. Thank you. An utterly inspiring story. Also, the paintings/images are sublime, who is the artist and where can I find them, please?
Thanks for your feedback! I made the paintings digitally using an AI tool called Midjourney. I am planning to release them on my Buy Me A Coffee page soon! A link to my page is on the pinned comments.
@PhilipThompson hi I appreciate your channel very much. Did you know that Midjourney has been/is in trouble (with a group of similar companies) for appropriating the work of artists without their consent? In other words copyright infringement. Adobe created products are more ethical and don't make life hard for creatives like me (for instance), which is the drawback with AI graphics.

The use of paintings to tell this incredible woman's story enhanced the whole film
i think they're ai-generated bro
I knew about Nancy years ago. I’m also from New Zealand. Believe me, she was quite tough and could drink anyone under the table. I wrote to her when she was in the care Home in England. The then Prince Charles paid for her to be there. I offered to get her anything she needed but I don’t think she could manage to write back. A very special individual.
read her australia book- fitzgerald author- then phoned her australia address- but a lady there told me ahh had just missed her and she had gone too live in london city. What a great story - it makes me think of all the untold stories of the people with the balls to stand up to corrupt regimes.
Courage comes in many packages. This lady was a true hero. I'm ashamed to admit that I had not know of her. Thank you for bringing her well deserved recognition.
Another courageous woman of the same time. And in the French resistance was Virginia Hall. I read her biography. She was every bit as courageous and amazing a different breed of person for sure
Strange how this Kiwi gal never got any recognition back in New Zealand. As a fellow Wellingtonian, I find it disturbing that someone so outstanding as Nancy hasn't ever been mentioned in NZ history.
not sure where you have been but I have her book and have known of her for yonks... ofcoursekiwi born but Australian raised so guess who will claim her.
Because your government there are just a bunch of fifth graders
She was 20 months old when she moved to Australia - not a lot of Kiwi influence. However, you're being a bit unfair. Her Kiwi heritage is always acknowledged in Australia. @@annhollebon

Unfortunately, she was eventually caught and executed.
nora , as well as all the radio operators were true heroes vs as they knew their kid was shirt as most operators caught within weeks and executed
@Aussie Pom She was made a Companion of the Order of Australia.
Wow, she had amazing grit and determination. Heroism born out of values and deep desire to do right. Very inspiring.

Many find the courage because their husband, fiance or loved one was lost, injured or killed.
Why is Hollywood constantly rehashing old movies when there’s so many amazing stories like this one to share, real heroes and heroines!
because this type of heroic and patriotic behavior is not welcomed by the zionist hollywood. plus it has character building aspect. they want woke not strong characters
Why is her story not taught in schools, she was so brave ,to much woke rubbish to feel there heads with,I read her book years ago, still have it an lent it to friends to read, unsung Heroes,
Hollywood has a problem with real history, fact, and truth
She was an exceptional person: intelligent, selfless ,brave, patriotic &, beautiful .A rare species .Her role in ww2 deserves much more space in war history.Amazing ww2 heroin
Hope it was a typo, it is spelled heroine.
How very brave😢
Also very fit, well trained top shots, great athletes undergoing rigorous training, superb actors, ruthless as lovers, wily and close combat experts especially with knives.
She could really think on her feet. A natural in the world of espionage.
Lovely, that would of been great to meet her.
Thank you Valdemar

She is so underrated, just like Virginia Hall, an American who also was a resistance fighter in France during the war.

What an incredible life she lived! That was truly one of my favorite spy stories you've covered so far.
It is unfortunate that so many people who worked like this in the shadows don't get the respect that they should. This is obviously due to the nature of their work.
Kinda like how Military leaders get the Medal of Honor because of the brave men underneath them. So many nobodies who are the true heroes.
Oh but she did !
@@spikenomoon👏👏👏🎯💯 Thank you!
Yes Simon. Apparently it was hardly ever mentioned by the SOE and they were on their own if captured. They knew this of course. Bravery is an understatement.
Nancy Wake was awarded the George Cross as far as I am aware for her work and also the Croix De Guerre from France.

This was a fantastic documentary. I can't believe I have never heard of her. She was astonishing! The pictures you provided were great also.

Where would you find an actress who would be credible playing the part? Her story should be told .
⛔️ It is a shame that lots of ladies from this generation's role model are cardi b or Kardashian family instead of someone like Nancy who's symbol of love, strength and resilience. I am not even British or French and even I am proud of her,
R.I.P Nancy, you always be remembered as a true hero.
Useless bad role models...I hate what they stand for.i am in my early 40s
No trust me, No one considers the Kardashians as being role models. That is just a name that is bandied about.
Her Maori ancestry perhaps contributed to her warrior fearlessness as well. She was always proud of this Maori connection.
What a wonderful story! I must get her book! I'm sure there are other women whose stories we don't know. I for one would appreciate learning about them. God bless them all.
At the completion of World War 2, the highest decorated female SOE officer was Christine Granville ( real name, Krystyna Starbek ), however, she was murdered by a spurned lover in 1952.Nancy Wake became the most highly decorated because grateful nations periodically issued new medals to heroic individuals who were able to attend ceremonies.
wow...thats an awfull way to die for such a heroin
I think it was a bit more than that, Nancys recognition was not just any old set of medals from the French government - they were the highest possible ones that could be bestowed on any individual, man or woman.
Great video. Combinations of fate, love and skills. The passion, boldness and perseverance of such people ease the pain of many. Very interesting stories.
What a remarkable woman, so brave. May she rest in perfect peace
As a Kiwi, let me assure everyone we still proudly lay claim to this remarkable heroine.
@@-hopskinny5865 Meanwhile, NZ hands out a Damehood to traitor Ardern.
You are thinking of Virginia Hall who had a limp :)
@Philip Thompson thank you - correct. Amazing people that endured so much, but kept moving quietly.
@@PhilipThompson
Virginia Hall had a limp because she had a wooden leg. Before the war, she was hunting and accidentally shot herself in the foot. Gangrene set in and she had to opt for having it amputated below the knee. She was another woman who gave the Germans fits. Hall ran the most agents in the field of espionage in shortwave radios and resistance.
Beautifully narrated. Your voice is easy on my ears 😊

Well done, really wonderful paintings. Excellent.

I SALUTE U, NANCY WAKE. U R SO INTELLIGENT, SELFLESS, PATRIOTIC. AN INSPIRATION TO ALL.
Amazing video, thanks for sharing!
‘Heroism’ beyond measure.

Excellent film. Thank you!
