When I was 16, I read the book: “Carve her name with Pride”. Fascinated, I wrote a speech for my English class and received a good mark. Fast forward 40 years and I read that her daughter Tania had written a book about her Mom. I mentioned to my son and his wife that I wished I could get it but it was only available in England. That Christmas I was handed a Fed-ex parcel from them and on opening discovered the book signed by Tania with a personal note. I cried as it was so thoughtful. Her story still resonates with me. Thank you for this video. She was a brave woman!
What a beautiful gift from your family. How many young people today would do half of the exploits of brave men and women fighting during WW2 for freedoms, country, family and GOD given rights? May GOD bless.
Violette has been my heroine since I was a child. 'Carve her name with pride' left a mark on me and I believe her to be the bravest and most remarkable woman. Thank you for your documentary
If you liked the movie with Virginia McKenna I suggest you to see also these movies about female S.O.E. agents => 😉 "Odette" (Anna Neagle, Trewor Howard) => Odette Hallows, maiden name Sansom "Carve Her Name with Pride" (Virginia McKenna, Paul Scofield) => Violette Szabo "Against the Wind" (a very young Simone Signoret) 😯😍😀 "Charlotte Grey" (Cate Blanchett codename Rose) read about Eileen Nearne "A Man Called Intrepid" (Michael York, Barbara Hershey, codename Madeleine) => « The Indian Princess » Noor Inayat Khan "Female Agents" (Sophie Marceau) => Lise de Baissac "Foyle`s War" : Season 8, Episode 3 - Elise Odette nor survived the war but was even a technical adviser for both movies "Carve Her Name with Pride" and "Odette“.
The female agents of S.O.E. were second to none for courage and determination and if anybody goes to Eden Camp in North Yorkshire, all the female S.O.E agents that were killed, murdered and tortured by the SS, Gestapo and SD are commemorated there. I am 68 and have seen active service in two armies, but all of these women had far more courage than I had.
The poem for Violette: The life that I have Is all that I have And the life that I have Is yours. The love that I have Of the life that I have Is yours and yours and yours. A sleep I shall have A rest I shall have Yet death will be but a pause. For the peace of my years In the long green grass Will be yours and yours and yours.
The beauty of the illustrations and the script lightens a moving story of courage and sacrifice. Great were these women, and great are those reminding us about them through such videos. Thanks
If i remember correctly, in the film "Carver her name in stone" The little girl at the end accepting her mothers medals was infact Tania, her real daughter.
Superlative, as always. An exhibition in construct, script writing, delivery, narration, artistry, and editing. I cannot think of a better tribute to the bravery of an operative of His Majesty and a dedicated champion of truth and freedom over tyranny. As always, the art worked in perfect unison with the narrative and was utterly sublime. I always look forward to a new video, this one was everything I expected and more. Your work in short story format, and the artwork you use, would be a great addition to the libraries at Shrivenham and Bletchley, and my library, obviously. Thank you again Philip Thompson for another factual video of one of the Hero’s of the French Division of the SOE. Courage to follow your destiny has to be remembered and rewarded, for all generations. My real question will be to Vera Atkins and Maurice Buckmaster, when they received messages from their hand picked agents in France, and their special code was not on the bottom of the message, what stopped them from not telling their supervisors that there was something seriously wrong? When I read that after the War, Vera returned to Europe to trace her agents tracks and find out what really happened to them, ending up in one of the Concentration Camps, finding out how her girls were killed. Let us all be responsible for our actions in our lives, when we gave gone off our track, get back on and make it good. If we can live an honorable life , then we have given our County 1/10 of what these courageous gave their lives for. Peace and Light to all those brave Souls in every war that fought for their Countries. To the Ukrainian People, we are with you all the way.
The SOE was a bit of a disaster - all 30 agents sent to Holland were turned by the Gestapo and gave false reports back to England (even when the identity check was deliberately omitted from the coded messages by some agents, in an effort to alert the SOE!). The fact that Szabo took a car on her last journey - in defiance of the edict by Germans in the area that all such travel by the French was forbidden - indicates poor training - something which led indirectly to her death. Szabo was a brave person, but better training and discipline may have helped her to avoid the fate she suffered.
This video fails to say why this young Violette was arrested so fast Quite simply because there was a traitor who operated within the SOE. He was responsible for the arrest by the Gestapo of numerous agents sent to France. Easy for him to denounce them, it was the official SOE pilot who was responsible for landing the plane which landed these agents on French soil. his name was Eric DERICOURT look up his name on Wikipedia. he caused a lot of damage. In addition there was a struggle between Churchill's toy SOE and MI6 which was in charge of foreign intelligence, the SOE was rather in the Action...
Did Violette ever collaborate with the large and successful “Heckler” Resistance network put together and headed by Virginia Hall, « La dame qui boîte »? Did they ever meet during the time they were both operating in the south of France, or am I mistaken and by the time Violette returned to France for her second SOE mission, Hall had already crossed the Pyranees on foot; gotten arrested by Spanish police for entering the country illegally; and returned to London? I believe that by the second half of 1944, Hall had left the SOE and had joined the American OSS, returning to France until the War’s end, disguised as an old peasant woman.
Love These! Just a small critique, if I may. Writing from Germany, and it is "Gestapo", hard pronounced, not "Schtapo". While it is "Sisherheit," not "Sickerheit". That said, your French accent is on point, so I would hope they dropped you into France. In Deutschland you'd be toast. ❤
Great video and story - now if only you could decide on a consistant pronounciation of the names - "Violette/Vyolet" changes every few setences, and there is even "Szabo"/"Zaybo" and a few more weird ones :)
I know her name today. I don’t know the name of the majority of the insipid 23-year-olds who go blindly through life thinking that their worth depends on how many likes they get on TikTok or Instagram etc. I know this brave young woman’s name and I will carry it with me for the rest of my life. That is her legacy, and no one can take it from her. This povely woman gave her everything for the war effort and she exists in the history books forevermore. I know her name.
The life that I have Is all that I have And the life that I have Is yours. The love that I have Of the life that I have Is yours and yours and yours. A sleep I shall have A rest I shall have Yet death will be but a pause. For the peace of my years In the long green grass Will be yours and yours and yours.
@@petermcculloch4933 That tells me they had a 50% loss rate. awful. I see you missed the reason for my remark. "THE SOE agent who paid the ultimate price" implies that only one did pay the price.
An (unspeakable==US 😢😢😢) effort regarding women, this one particularly vulnerable and it would seem (unconsciously) abused by everyone involved including the narrator stirring up her ghost. Ghosts are aware when their names or experiences when alive are spoken of. Few understand that it is our words that "ruin the P in RIP". Bury the past, especially wartime stories. Speaking of evil has karmic consequences. As Christ said, "Forgive them, for they know not what they do."
Can we stop with this cliche the war was about freedom. USA fought with racially segregated units, France & UK were trying to hold on to their colonies. It had fuck all to do with freedom or anti fascism. Western powers chose anti communism over anti Fascism. What ever it was about, it wasn't about this unreflective cliche.
Must be nice for you having a rather lacking awareness of big picture history - going through life as an imperious pompous self-righteous dictator with your "off the shelf" slogo-cliches when you are actually like a blunt record needle stuck in a groove on a cracked record of adolescent trope level versions of history.
Thank you comrade. "WESTERN" powers gives you away, doesn't it? Both Britain & Germany were "western" powers. The fact is, the communist Red Army was an ally of Britain in WW2. They were both fighting Nazi Germany. Remember now? They both fought for freedom from Nazi oppression. What's got into you that you're so bad tempered, & your language is so foul? Are you constipated?
Bel…have you thought that we learn from history, and people know (we’re not children) what society was like and we’ve gotten past that. I wasn’t born in a country that had colonies but I see most politicians are sowing discord just so they can be the saviors.

About fifty percent of the female SOE officers survived the war.
@@petermcculloch4933 That tells me they had a 50% loss rate. awful.
I see you missed the reason for my remark.
"THE SOE agent who paid the ultimate price" implies that only one did pay the price.
@@petefluffy7420No, it just implies this video is only about one SOE agent in particular
@@flexinclouds I was tricked by the "the", it implies only one does it not ? "A SOE Agent..." is accurate. "The SOE agent ..." is not..
Hazards of espionage german spies in britain probably met
Similar fate!
Wery brave women however if you have children its your duty to not risk your life
Can we stop with this cliche the war was about freedom.
Always easy for people to talk and critique when they didn’t go through this horror 😡
The language is just too flowery...gave up after five minutes.😴
