Their Abbey road stuff is nothing to laugh at..and their Renaissance series is still kicking ass all these years later. that Rcomp...and The renaissance EQ is still great. It's not always the money.
Interesting comparison. I would think though that, as the defining sound -IMO - of this compressor seems to be most pronounced when dealing with transients, I would have liked a drums only track running at 4:1 with 5 or so dB or gain reduction to really hear the difference. Given the density of the audio example, the very subtle differences are pretty difficult to discern with only a 'gentle tapping' of the compressor. My 2p. And thanks.
Id seen a comparison on some live drums so figured id provide something a little different,I have to balance the fine line of showing off the tests and it not become an hour long saga of a video no one will watch. Thanks for watching.
i think the waves version makes the "mid channel" a little bit more focused than the uad an it sounds more "flat" for me. maybe the "flatness" comes from the inner samplerate of the plugin, which has something to do with a good "production" of harmonic overtones (in plugin´s generally).. (i hope i think right. :D) in google i cant find something about oversampling in waves plugin´s (i´ve heard that uad plugins are oversampled by default).. maybe a test at a "very high" samplerate will do a better comparison.. if it´s not already done by you. :)
Never heard that UAD automatically oversample. In some effects that would make sense. An perhaps it could be part of the emulation effect. Either way it not something i've ever factored in.
GoodJohn, you couldn't be more right. The average listener could care less about what eq or compressor was used. Like the engineer said 99.9% only going to care if the overall song sounds good to then. And I think have of the producers are not hearing that much of a difference. IMO it's all about justifying the cost therfore we'll psyche ourselves out to hear the .02% difference and say oh wow this is warmer and this is harsher. Today I'm still trying to hear WTF is warm. @@Unders £115 at the moment (29/11/2018). I think the UAD one is far better. UAD plug-ins are too expensive, though. My biggest concern with entering the UAD plug-in ecosystem is that, after a few years, the Apollo interface, for example, might not be powerful enough for newer plug-ins. So that means more £ for processing power for the interface via an upgrade as well as any £ needed to keep the computer capable. Of course, with waves, the upgrade plans are ££££. I don't have a Waves upgrade plan and would never get one. I think a lot of the Waves plug-ins just don't compare well against other products now on the market. The Waves ones have always sounded plasticky to me.
In the end if you’re going to push for a creative job to make a living you will spend the money. I disagree about the sound with waves plugs, but trust what you hear that will define your work 😊
I know what it's like to be a poor musician but I have a little more money now and I bought a UAD quad satellite about a year ago for around $600-700 on sale, came with three bonus plugins of my choice. If you find a good deal like that I think it's totally worth it. They have good sales in the summer and every Christmas and give you usually $50 in free credit too. It all depends on how you look at things. A lexicon 480 costs $4000 on eBay or you can get the plugin on UAD for a tiny fraction of that price. One of my other favorites is the Empirical Labs Fatso compressor/tape simulator. It cost me a fraction of the price of a hardware unit and sounds nearly almost as good. I could go on but... I have a lot of Waves plugins too, I'm not hating on them but UAD is almost always better.
Could you perhaps do a more in-depth vid on your waves soundgrid server? Been thinking about going that route instead of pouring more money into my Apollo Twin Dou.. Thanks..
@@Unders yeah I saw. Well maybe show a project where you use waves plug-ins only and go back and forth between sound grid version and native to see the difference including specs on your Mac and the sound grid server. 🙂
its a lot of effort to set up where its just waves mixing a whole tune, its then a long slog to match everything natively and on soundgrid. Maybe when i have some time off but i cant promise it anytime soon. Or if i get one of the new ones in Jan.
The UAD low end kills the Waves, but for the budget consumer, it's really up to you. Me personally, I like to use hardware (Warm Audio) gear with waves plugins because that way I can get the tube saturation of real rack gear, while maintaining the flexibility of modern day ITB recording.
I laugh with a lot of comments here. If you want more low just add it. You don't need UAD just because you want "low". You need something more than "low" to tell which one is better.

It'd be GREATLY appreciated brother... Seem s no one really even seems to know about soundgrid for the most part (which is NUTS to me because it seems like the cost of new gear is greatly offset when comparing cost of plugins between Waves UA).
I like the idea il add it to video list.
@@Unders Congratulations... You have just been awarded another LOYAL subscriber!!! Thank you. :-D
@@Unders Found aFree & Open Source One as well called "AudioGridder"...I'm hearing great stuff about it... and if YOU'RE the channel that brings it mainstream for free (especially if it performs better)... these companies doing it for profit will be forced to introduce better and more performative tech that they are keeping in the back pocket...Like Intel untel Lisa Su took over AMD. LOL
VERY HELPFUL TUTORIAL THANKS
❤️ thanks for watching
Super helpful! Thanks Unders!
❤️
Thank you for the video!
Very nice thx . How about comparing with the real hardware API .
Don’t think I’d buy one at £2.8k an rent options are very slim. Otherwise I’d be up for doing a few hardware unit comparisons to software.
@@Unders that would be very interesting. Thx for effort.
UAD is so much better
Ughhh. I have the waves one but the UAD one sounds much better to me in this, more warmth.
But is it £229 better is the question
It is £229 better when other audio engineers are reviewing your album releases made with it and influencing your album sales
Could you perhaps do a more in-depth vid on your waves soundgrid server? Been thinking about going that route instead of pouring more money into my Apollo Twin Dou..
Thanks..
What do you want to know? They have announced a whole new line of them for 2019 btw
Or if i get one of the new ones in Jan.
the UAD is more deep in the low !
that's not good...mushy !
I hope you didn't buy that UAD version. :) There isn't that much difference between the two.
I did not. Cannot hear or “feel” an extra £200 of value
👍
The UAD low end kills the Waves, but for the budget consumer, it's really up to you. Me personally, I like to use hardware (Warm Audio) gear with waves plugins because that way I can get the tube saturation of real rack gear, while maintaining the flexibility of modern day ITB recording.
I keep thinking about getting a pair of TG warm Pultec units, but I hear mixed reviews and can’t demo them 🤔
@@Unders I own one and think they are great units! If I were to recommend any Warm Audio unit however, that would be the WA NEVE 1073EQ unit.
@@PaulIsbell Need to work myself out a deal with WarmA i think :D
you are the typical smoke and mirror guy! none of it matters, lol. Adjust the knob . Learn how to do it.
Thanks Unders
Thanks for watching
For the price waves is much better
That’s crazy, UA definitley is smoother and better low end! Solid video 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Appreciated thanks. I’m still using the waves one but both offer solid character.
Am I the only one here that can't hear pretty much no differences? I'm using a pair of Yamaha HS8 in a treated room.
Should make the choice easier for you :)
Demoing compressors on TH-cam is like tasting soup underwater
Ok bye ✌️
@@Unders that wasn’t a criticism of your demo, which was well done. Just a shame that TH-cam still doesn’t do audio justice.
Almost spat my drink out at your analogy 😂
Waves is Richer
Uad
wave best
glad it helped you
I laugh with a lot of comments here. If you want more low just add it. You don't need UAD just because you want "low". You need something more than "low" to tell which one is better.
There is no right answer. Only a preference in result. Other may laugh at your lack of caring 🤷♂️
You need to activate manual gain before the waves api output knob becomes active, Its on automatic at the moment......
both plugins are matched.
@@Unders Does the UAD also have Automatic gain compensation? I'm not that familiar with that version .
@@marcclement7790 Next time think twice before complaining.
@@oscarcdpl Read twice before commenting.
How many times will we go through this computers make it sound thin period. The uad is using actual analog parts the waves plugins is just there bro.
Both are 100% software.
The waves has more punch and more even Harmonics.....that make the Waves a better Mastering Compressor
They both get the job done and they both suck vs hardware they try to emulate.
Fair enough. I don’t have the unit or even any audio passed through the unit to compare.
