Watched this along with a few other UAD API vids before last-minute buying on sale for £75. This is easily the clearest, most informative review out there. Thanks so much - subscribed!
One of the best explanations of what the API 2500 is and what it does section by section. Difficult to find such a clear explanation throughout the world wide web. It is my goto-mixbus compressor but unfortunately I only have the Waves version...
The quality difference between the uad version and the waves has a value - in my opinion - of maximum $ 20, not 270 + the hardware as it is currently (now the Waves version is at $ 29, usually is at 59: it is always the best purchase). The UAD version is slightly more detailed, but less punchy!
Unlinking a compressor is not just about creating a wider field. A drum kit with a tom smash on the right, will cause the comp to over compress, triggered by one side, which is not desired, unlinking the comp means the it reacts and attenuates the signal where the tom is, separately, creating a more balanced transparent sound without trigging the comp needlessly.
@@ELLIOT8209 better then waves, how can i explain how? Is better in all possible way. But now i'm totally in Acustica Audio's land, try Pink of Acustica and the Waves one will sound like the cheapest toy that you have ever tried in your entire life
Great video. I don't understand the difference in the "knee" settings vs the attack. Doesn't the attack control how quickly the compressor starts working? Wouldn't the knee settings control the same thing? What's the difference? Thanks
Excellent question. While the settings seem the same, and can even sound the same, they are controlling different aspects of the compressor. The knee is changing the curve of the compression map. That effect is instantaneous on the input signal. It's more akin to changing the ratio. The attack parameter is effectively a slew generator that controls how long it takes the compressor to change gain once the input signal is passed the threshold volume.
@@CharlesFerraro Thanks Charles! You've answered my question a year after I asked and it STILL was something I was curious about ahaha. Appreciate the insight.
Also, I couldn't really hear many of the differences with tweaks. Are my ears just not trained? Is it harder to hear on youtube? I tried hard to hear the differences and it all just sounded so similar to me. I could hear a difference at the very end when you toggled the compression in and out. In any case, great video nevertheless!
Definitely not your fault. Most presenters that make vids on compression make completely nonsensical tweaks and then pretend they can hear a difference.
Somebody, help me to chose the best UAD tools for producing, mixing, mastering my own tech, minimal, house, electro, funk. Just to fall in love with this tools, and not to spend time to searching again.

Thanks a lot for detailed answer! :) Cheers
I’m fairly new to learning to use emulations. What’s the difference between the purpose of this API vs the SSL 4K buss compressor?
The coloration is more important on the API, but also the internal options. SSL 4K is a nice one too
Wow mate, great walkthrough!
Will check it out how can I find the track ? It's a great song ?

Thanks, using the demo I find this compressor stunning. I didn't like the Waves version, but the UAD is my new favorite drum bus compressor.
