  • This video may help you see how the transmission belt is changed on a Cub Cadet LT1045 Riding Mower. The owner's manual says take it to the dealer for service. I refuse to do that.

      If your pulley comes off then you don’t have to unbolt the engine. Most pulleys get stuck though. Hope it works for you.

    No need to loosen the motor. The drive pulley simply slides down for easy access. The rest was very helpful. Thanks for the video.

    We just changed ours. Had watched the video but had also printed out some directions from ehow. The only difference was instead of bending the tabs or loosening the engine, the printed directions said to pull down on the pull that is above the PTO. Came right off and made it a breeze. We also took off one of the rear wheels and that made it much easier to get to the rear and over the fan blades.

    Thanks for posting - a great help :) My lt1042's drive belt slipped off the front pulley after a tiny twig got wrapped around it. An 18V impact wrench and 16mm impact skt took the PTO bolt off easily and the pulley slid down the slotted shaft without having to lift the engine up. My machine's only got 20 hrs on it though! Thanks again didn't have to go near the dealership :)

    I was using my LT1045 for what is likely the last project of the year before winter and the dang belt came off. It was all tore up so clearly it was just a matter of time. I will be ordering the belt now but unless I get some more good weather (Wisconsin), it will have to wait until next spring for the fix. I am soooo happy to find your video. I watched three others and yours looks by far the simplest and I really appreciate the "getting to the point" and lack of BS fluff on many of the others. Clean language is a big plus as well.

      Hey. Thanks for the nice comments. I like to try to get to the point. I can’t stand long videos. I will be doing another video on replacing the deck bearings for $30. I noticed the left blade was leaving uncut grass. Found the blade not spinning freely so I bought all new bearings to do all three. Look for it soon.

    Many thanks - I was doing some other repair work on my Father-in-laws lt1045, and noticed the belt was in need of replacement. I probably would not have tried removing the four engine bolts to get better access if I had not seen your video. That was much easier than using a gear puller to try and get the pulley off the crankshaft. Like another commenter, I was carefull in putting the bolts back in so not to cross thread them - by gently moving the engine with a screwdriver pried up against the side of the pulley to insure lined up perfectly straight. Once again... many thanks!!!

    Thanks for taking the time to make the video. I looked under there and saw the unfriendly, to the do-it-yourself guy design engineering, but your video pointed out the hurdles to expect. I also liked that you showed the replacement belt number. The only thing I would have added would have been the model year that you were working on as the parts dealers make a differentiation between pre and post 2008 parts. It may or may not effect this particular part and it's replacement. Thanks again for taking the time to post.

    Overall a very helpful and no bs DIY vid. Thanks!
    A few of my takeaways from the R&R:
    - Fully removing the PTO dual pulley assembly down and off the vertical crankshaft pulley is advisable for greasing the shaft during belt R&R. Do NOT forget the SPACER that slides on the shaft between the engine block and pulley assembly! It is oriented WIDE side UP [edit: MINE was flange up: other vid showed flange DOWN. Doubt orientation matters...]
    - Be very deliberate when re-installing the PTO bolt; it can cross-thread (ask me how I know, grrr). Advise against using impact wrench to install anything into any engine block: pros use hand drives + torque wrench for good reasons during block installs.
    - On a 1045, removing the underseat battery and its support bracket is essential. There's a circlip retaining the rubber fan above the trans which is FUN to remove: i used an awl to secure one of its tiny holes and then a slot screwdriver to pivot the circlip off (the awl prevents it from flying away). After circlip is removed the trans pulley easily slides upward for belt R&R.
    Stupid and annoying design, imo.

    Thank you for this. Just got a used (2005) LT-1045 and threw the drive belt and this vid made things fairly easy-peasy. Thankfully the PTO came off with no problem as that was the only part I was a bit worried about.Now if I can just figure out how to keep the idler pulley bracket bolt to stop loosening itself and throwing the deck belt...

    Great video! Thanks! Your method, is a whole lot easier, than trying to take the upper pulley off! Nice to know that there are 4 bolts to remove, to lift the engine up. I don't know why Cub Cadet, didn't just make bolt on belt guides, instead of frame mounted tabs? My belt, is original, and is cracked, seven ways to Sunday, with missing belt chunks! If I didn't tackle this, when I was ready to change my deck belt, yesterday, I can see myself, trying to push the beast across the lawn, after it snaps, and I am sure I wouldn't be in a good spot, as my luck works! Should be easy, since I packed in my frustration, at dinner time, last night! Thank you, so much!

      Fix Them Things! One thing that didn't surprise me, is the one bolt, that is hidden, yuk! I have decided to undo the exhaust, at the engine, to help me swivel the engine, since it does restrict movement. I did loosen the hidden engine bolt somewhat. After lunch, I'll see how it goes. I've got a dose of Kano Kroil, penetrant on the exhaust bolts, in hopes that it does not give me problems. Fun times!

    WOW my mower drive pulley comes off once the belt is off. I just did this yesterday on my LTX1050. After removing the deck I jacked up one side of the mower and secured it with tie down straps to the rafters of the garage. That worked great. I didn't have to hang the clutch by a spring. I disconnected the cable pig tail connector then remove the bolt and pulled the clutch off of the drive. With my mower I didn't have to bend the tabs that are around the drive pulley because the pulley slides right off once you loosen the belt.

    • @fixthemthings
      @fixthemthings  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Donald Joseph Wood I just did my friends belt the other day and his pulley wouldn’t come off so I did the same thing my video shows by unbolting engine. I hate when people bend the tabs. That’s just lazy. You are lucky the pulley came right off. I hope my video helped you. It’s pretty easy to change this belt.

    Trying to do mine now, but can't get the PTO bolt off to save my life. At first I thought it might be reverse threaded, but as you indicated in a comment below, it is not. The only impact I have access to is a Milwaukee 18v. Thought that would surely work, but I can't make it happen. Any suggestions? I really don't want to take it in for such a simple fix...

      Yes. You can use anti seize on the pulley shaft. I would just use regular grease on the steering. Same grease you use in the wheels.

    The engine pully also slides off. you don't have to unbolt the engine (or bend the tabs as someone else said). they get rusted on, so spray it good with WD40, let it set awhile and it should slide off.

  • @jimoutman9482
    @jimoutman9482 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Easier way!!!!! Started removing the engine bolts and noticed nothing holding the pulley in place such as set screws. Grabbed it and it pulled right down on the shaft. Easy enough.Cub Cadet thought of that. Had the deck off so a good time to lube it and sharpen the blades.

    Well I ordered a belt for my mower. Got a genuine cub cadet belt too. Hopefully I can figure out how to install it. The big question is will a impact screw gun be enough for the PTO bolt or do I need an air impact because I don't own one. Had to use a breaker bar and 6 foot pipe to get the blades off to change.

    I bought a Cub Cadet LT1045 back in 2008. After seeing this video and a few others, I wish I had never bought it. Having to unbolt the friggin' motor just to get a drive belt off? Seriously? I've already had to re-do the belt drive on the mower deck, had to fix the park brake because it was locked and wouldn't allow the mower to go forward or back, and now my drive belt needs to be replaced and I find out it's a big hassle too. I'd throw the thing away if it didn't have a Kohler engine. That part has never failed me. After 11 years of mowing, the motor is still strong and runs like new. But the rest of that pile of junk...

    • @fixthemthings
      @fixthemthings  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some people are able to change it without lifting the engine as their pulley will fall off. Most people will have stuck pulleys like I did. My cub has been really good. Rolled it over twice down a hill and turned back on with no problems. Only problems I had is 2 drive belts and one deck belt but I maintain very well. 15 yrs old now.

    I don't have impact tools, can the PTO be taken off with a big breaker bar?

    • @fixthemthings
      @fixthemthings  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has been a while since I did this but you should be able to use a pipe wrench to hold the pulley while using the breaker bar. Just don't damage the pulley.

Have a belt picked out just need to order it then hopefully I can get it on. Looks like you dropped the deck to do this. Wondering if it's necessary or can I just unhook the PTO belt. I have a 10 year old LT1045 and just replaced both my drive belts. The transmission drive belt is the hardest. However, I did not have to move the motor. The pulley just slides down on the shaft and you can slide the belt right on and push it back up. Perhaps the pulley in the video is seized on the shaft.

    • @fixthemthings

I have a Craftsman also, and you don't need any special tools to replace it. Now I know why the guy sold me this tractor......everything you go to do is a pain in the ass.....Blade belt jumps off if you don't have the motor revved up.......I guess this is so it will stretch your belt so you have to buy another replacement.......Nothing about Cub Cadet that I like..........Will never buy another!

My customer gets about 2hrs into a cut notices the smell and then drive belt is toast?...How are you routing the belt through..never really covered that part in your video..Do you have to remove the steering linkage to get the belt through?

    How long did it take you to replace your drive belt?

      MegaFireman50 all I can think of is the tensioner is not tight enough and the belt may be slipping. Check the tensioner.

    Thanks for the video........I figured somebody would have one on TH-cam........this is a piss poor design by Cub Cadet......they just want you to take your mower to their dealer for some easy cash. Shouldn't need special tools (per the manual) to change a freakin' drive belt. I have a Craftsman's also and no special tools are needed to change any of the belts.

    i turn the bolt on my PTO, LT1040. and the engine wants to turns over.bolt doesn't come out. it just turns with the engine. help!!!

      @fixthemthings  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will need an impact wrench to get the bolt out. You could also try to lock the shaft with some pliers to keep it from spinning.

      +Kevin Aalberts Did you wire transfer funds to the poster of this video to pay him for his time for making this helpful video, and for a timely response to your question? If so, you have a legitimate gripe!

    no need to remove motor bolts bend the tabs around pulley much easier they are only there to keep belt in place when it gets crappy and loose like the one in this video

    Did you ever think of actually doing this on an LTX1045, instead of one that you think is the same?

    • @paulmyer5755
      @paulmyer5755 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just finished my LTX 1045 , Hardest part was getting bolt out of clutch. I used a impact wrench and it sill took quite a while. Once the bolt was out I wriggled the clutch pulled straight down and it came off easy. The belt pulley just came off no problem. Guess I was lucky. Was not stuck on. I was going to try a video but not good at that. Did not have to bend tabs, or remove engine bolts like others say. Good luck.

      Also used a long handled screw driver to place in the slot on the fly wheel to hold it from turning while freeing the bolt , don't place in the plastic vanes.

    They are junk. I bought one about 7 years ago and have had all kinds of trouble with it, a GT 1554. It's a lot easier to replace the belt if you can hoist the mower with a lift or turn it upside down. If you can loosen the crankshaft pulley you can get the belt on. Taryl Fixes All on youtube has the best videos on how to do this job.

    This is an old post, but there is an update. At the 1:12 mark, you do not have to remove the engine mount bolts. That hidden pulley sits on that rod, just pull it down and it comes off. It sits in a key-hole lock, so just wiggle it, or bang it if it is stuck.
    As well, don't bother fishing out the old belt, just cut it, and pull it out. Not only is it faster, but you can then measure it against your new belt to see if it is the right size, and get the correct one if it isn't.
    As well, there is a ton of grease and crap under there. add at least 30-60mins for cleaning all the crap you could not see....and yes, you really should clean it out. Grease everything that should move freely. It will be another 5-10yrs before you get under there again, so do it right.
    As well, now is a good time to put in some washers in both sides of the steering linkage, greased up, to clean up all "the slop". You'll love the new feel of the entire steering. its much better.
    Lastly, FTT used a impact gun to remove the PTO pulley. If you don't have one, there are posts to stick stuff in the spark plug hole, thereby seizing the engine and then taking off the pulley. DO NOT DO THAT. Its never a good idea to put anything in the cylinder. I tried it, out of curiosity with string and it failed, so I tired CAT-5 wire. It got stuck in the cylinder and I felt like an idiot thinking I just added 10hrs to the job to remove the head. The MUCH BETTER way is to just wrap any strap (like a ratchet strap) around the flywheel for friction and then fold over the end about 4 times and jam in in the gap where the ignition unit it. Both are solid steel, so nothing will break. Now you can remove the PTO bolt easily. Simple reverse the strap when putting it back.

    @phillipglendashemphillard8224 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    you do not have to do all that. you lower the mower deck, take off the old belt up from front pulleys, go in under the battery to take it off the back pulley. Not as hard as this video made it.

    • @fixthemthings
      @fixthemthings  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phillip & Glenda Shemphillard you must have a different mower. My battery is up front and you can't get the belt off of the front pulley on mine unless you lift motor, bend tabs or remove the pulley. I thinking your mower is a different year or model.

    Anybody who buys a "cub cadet" today, deserves every stinking rotten time consuming dollar dropping headache that comes along with it. Cub cadet is a piece of shit. It wears out fast no matter how well you treat or maintain it. Not to mention the tinshit that it's made of, and the Chinese parts that come along with it.
