Dark Souls is the funniest example i see of this because fans defending the importance of "soloing" bosses don't get that they are actually going against one of the main goals that Miyazaki set out to include in his games. He based summoning off an experience where his car got stuck and strangers showed up and were willing to help him. His whole point was basically that there isn't a right or more important way to get through life. Life can be cooperative. But people took a system he wholesomely created to be used and be fun and turned it into a contest of self-importance. The worst part is they dont have the introspection or knowledge of its origins to even know or care. They're just interested in their egos.

I hadn't known about this before and this comment actually got me to look into it and read about it myself, so I appreciate that. I found it very interesting. I like that his takeaway was basically that strangers helping each other is good and not something that makes you weak.

Exactly,i recently deleted Reddit because it isn't a good place to have conversations/debates since many people treat it as a downvote or upvote thing(like the opinion of someone has more weight if it has more upvotes than others even if it's wrong)and it is a echo chamber that might give you the wrong opinion about gamers as a whole.

  • @ankuriboh
    @ankuriboh ปีที่แล้ว +7

"Get good" only applies when the game is tough but fair. If the game is completely broken or unbalanced, that no longer applies. I played The Force Unleashed and The Force Unleashed II on PC a few years ago, and the original on PC was broken. Starkiller would start running against the invisible walls during a boss fight, or start randomly spamming force lightning when I know I didn't hit the button, so he'd expend all his Force reserve. Honestly, it felt like there were three other people fighting for control of the character, and all three of them were blindfolded. "Get good" doesn't apply in that scenario.
As for the discussion of criticism isn't allowed because you don't know how to make games, it doesn't make sense. They're products made for consumers. If you're a consumer and don't like it, the product failed. If someone makes a game and the overwhelming consensus is that it's horrible, the developers can't go "no it's not, shut up". Not everyone can code, not everyone can voice act, not everyone can map out an intricate combat system, the same way that not everyone knows cinematography or writing, but we can tell when a movie, book, or video game was bad.

The "get good" crowd and the "You're playing it wrong" crowd both drive me nuts, especially when they are the same person. "You can't have an opinion because you don't play exactly the way I play"
Jay touched on it, but like "if you aren't playing Jedi Order 2 with the cross guard and pistol stances only you aren't even playing the game" "I play Hitman doing the k*ll everyone challenge only with just a fish and if you don't play that way then you don't deserve to have an opinion"
There are people that gate-keep you and shut you down just because you don't play exactly the same way they do
To feed off Nate's example; Wayne Gretzky was a great hockey player, the best, but that doesn't mean that someone like Chris Osgood can't have an opinion and play the game because he is a goalie and not a center.
If I want to play Skyrim as a Nordic Archer, I should be able to without someone going "psh, why do you even play that you should just uninstall it if you aren't going to be a red guard mage blacksmith mocha venti thief with a khajit wife"
So many examples of these kinds of people, but it all narrows down to a Toxic Fan Base, which is honestly the worst thing for any media.

Criticism is fine as long as it's constructive and not used for hating someone else's differing opinion. Having civilized discussions apparently takes so much brain power. The "get gud" arguments irks me because dumbasses forget that everyone is at a different skill level and that's okay. I may be really good at one game but struggle at another. We all go at our pace. There's no need to create insane challenges or have knowledge of every single detail in a title to fully enjoy a game. Why can't we let people enjoy/dislike something without requiring them to fulfill a certain criteria just so they can have the privilege of sharing an opinion? People need to chill out when someone doesn't play a game the "right way" or struggles. We all started out at Level 1 but through time and practice, our skill levels improved; some faster than others. Why do u care how someone experiences the game?
Thanks for bringing this topic up. Those that get riled up over something frivolous like videogames need to check their priorities in life.

I really enjoyed the discussion and agree fully. I really don't like conversations, in which everybody just try to prove how stupid the others are and how superioer I am. For me conversations should always be in good faith and curious to learn about each other.
Just one thing springs to mind from your discussion: I agree completely that there are no wrong ways in having fun (in solo player games) and that everyone should be allowed to engage in a discussion. However I think, that people, who beat the games in higher difficulties have a more detailed insight into the mechanics of that game. So they should be able to make more educated and cohesive arguments. For example, if I play Dragen Age: Origins in easy mode, I don't need really to care, what my companion characters are doing. But if I play in hard mode, the game forces me to make myself familiar with the controlls of side characters and the dynamics between the abilities of the party.
But the point is, that people who invest more time into games, shouldn't be dicks about it in discussions, because they are a little better prepared to bring more and nuanced details into it.

I've legit had someone say "Well, you are useless at the game," because I didn't like Alien Isolation. Just because I hate a game that only has the gimmick of hide and seek, doesn't mean I'm "useless" at it. Someone called the one game I decided to say "yeah, this game is shit," said that the game is the "quintessential gaming experience. So you fucking suck at it." If I have criticisms on a game, or there's part of something in a game I don't like, that doesn't mean I simply suck, it just means I didn't like it. And sometimes, the popular opinion on something is simply wrong.

A lot of it is ppl who have too much time on their hands and their opinions of things bc their personality and if you don't think on the same wave length as them, they take it as a personal insult. For some of these ppl they make the git gud comment as a way to 1up. Esp if its in response to a content creator. "watch me school this content creator, you suck at your job."
It also reeks of tribalism, narcissism, and over compensation. Its like the ppl who rain on other ppl parade when they post a clip of them doing something they felt was nice in a game. You'll see a comment or 3 like "I bet its bronze lobbies" or "you're not eve doing it in ranked", "I got better clips than this."
Its a weird obsession in nerd culture to wanna 1up and make other ppl feel miserable bc the person themselves are miserable and this is all they have to feel anything in life.

Will agree people need to learn to say 'I don't care' and move on, but some people can't accept that other people can have opinions that are just a valid as they did or in some cases make a better argument for their points, and it can turn ugly from there.
There are plenty of arguments that Ornstein and Smough is the best boss fight in Dark because of the skill it takes to sole it.
Some people will have the time to overcome that challenge, others won't, and some just don't want to put that much time into the game to git gud. No reason to insult or mock someone about that opinion. Well some people have fun doing that with people. Depending on the person that can be fine, but sometime it gets taken to insane levels of stupidity.

Iconic but tbh when the whole pathway to them is just artificially difficult by putting infinite stamina archers on chokepoints the boss and area loses a lot of its appeal to many players to the point where it's more obnoxious than it is impactful. It's also funny that everyone goes online and says they did it themselves but almost none of those people have footage to back it up, which makes their word just that - their word.

@@obamalover2113 For some reason people also forget the origin of the summoning system - it was designed with the mindset that the games' primary creator, Miyazaki, had. It was that you don't have to beat everything yourself. It doesn't matter. He based that mechanic off an experience he had where his car got stuck and helpful strangers helped him move his car and get going again. But elitist gamers missed the point. They see it as a handicap or a crutch, not what the actual creator intended for it to be. There's no right way to beat the game. Something similar happened to me recently with final fantasy 5,i was playing the game on game Boy avance and during the first hours the game was super fun and easy but as soon as i got to the Middle and endgame the game suffered a huge difficulty spike that never went down, enemies Started hitting harder having a ton of HP and spamming annoying status effects moves that can easily kill your party.
I tried to talk about this on Reddit and many Said that this game is easy because there are many broken jobs combinations(a new player would not know about them)and the fact many some people made challenges where they beat the game with the worst classes.
Unfortunately gaming became a way for many people that don't like themselves to Boost their ego, people are not willing to accept that a game has objective Flaws and that their opinion or playthrough doesn't invalidate the One from someone else.
