    I "fired" both my doctor and the endocrinologist for dismissing my medical concerns. I'm a geneticist. I can follow genetic trends. Every. Single. Woman. On my mom's side has thyroid issues. Also, my thyroid antibodies were over 500 (15ish times what they should be). I had hives for A FULL YEAR. And they still had the nerve to look at me and tell me they didn't think I had Hashimoto's (thyroid auto-immune disorder). Finally got a new GP who let me pick the endocrinologist for my referral. The endocrinologist checked my neck and immediately moved me to a new room for an ultrasound, which showed the scarring on my thyroid. I about cried for finally being taken seriously.

      Endometriosis runs in my family-

      My sister had almost the exact same issue, except her pediatrician didn't want to give her thyroid meds only because the thyroid test came back fine, but the Hashimoto's was something ridiculously high (something like 3,000). When she was taken to a real doctor that has more experience with female problems, they put her on the medicine right away.

      @@SaturnStatic Yeah, any doctor should tell you that once you hit your early 20s, your periods should have hit a regular rhythm and cause nothing more than "mild discomfort". Should -- most doctors don't understand that if someone is complaining to them about their period cramps, it's because their cramps are already on the moderate-severe end of the pain scale. (Regardless of actual pain tolerance level, most of us learn how to hide and swallow pain incredibly well, then when we do speak up, find ourselves being told "it can't be that bad" for reasons like "you got dressed before you got here, didn't you?"). Remarkably, it doesn't just happen with "female health" issues -- having my pain dismissed is how I spent 5 years with a cyst growing and shrinking inside one of my wrist bones and being told it was either tennis elbow or "all in your head". Good times.

      So this sounds like the doctor though they knew more than you did and didn't feel like actually looking into the issue aside from bullshitting saying you were fine. The sheer fact that you had to fight for them to even fucking just CHECK THE ISSUE THAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT AND INFORMED THEM ABOUT. It costs them nothing to just check even if its putting your mind at ease or something along the line.
      I'm very sorry you had to go through a situation like that at all Ms and frankly I think certain people just don't belong in medical care because it is just as much about the attitude and hospitality as it is supposed to be about healing.
      Hope you are feeling well and better.

    My psychiatrist fired me after the adolescent psych facility I'd spent the last week in diagnosed me with PMDD and cleared me to go back to school. He wanted me to go to the facility's day program. This is ignoring three very important facts: 1) My diagnosis meant that the reason my issues had gotten worse was hormonal, and provided I started the pill before I started ovulating again, I was no longer a danger to myself 2)I was going to a small alternative school specifically for students who had emotional issues but no behavioral problems. 3) Two of the girls at the facility had serious anger issues and had tried to beat me up.
    Despite this, my psychiatrist tried to convince the facility to make me go to the day program. They were like "We can't, she's not sick enough to need that. And she actually WANTS to go back to school, that basically never happens" Then he told me that if I went back to school, he'd drop me as a patient. I said goodbye and went back to school the following Monday.

    I've 'fired' a couple of doctors over the years lol. I think the worst one was the gyno at my college's medical center.
    She didn't take my complaints of pain seriously ("Periods hurt, deal."), she got mad that I wanted the implant BC (birth control; little implant under the skin in the arm) instead of the IUD BC (goes IN the uterus, no thanks!), told me the only reason I struggled to breathe was because I was fat and out of shape (I'm fat, yes, but I also have asthma and was being suffocated by my H+ size boobs), nearly made me throw up during an exam when she prodded my cervix way too hard, ignored my remarks of ow for two minutes after putting in a speculum and managed to pinch some of my vaginal wall (hurt like fuck), and completely disregarded my year long bleed. All she could tell me, after an ultrasound, that it wasn't cancer; what was causing the bleeding or why it was so heavy was met with a shrug and a bored, "I dunno."
    So glad I never have to see her ever again.

My father said no and bad mouthed the therapy as being "useless". I knew what had just happened as I watched the Doctor go silent and write something on the chart. As we were leaving I noted to myself that there was none of the usual small talk from the receptionist and no attempt to make another checkup appointment. They had been fired for laziness and stupidity. My mother never recovered from the surgeries.

    I will say I'm not a drug addict in any way and I had a prescription for vivance most of my childhood. When I turned 18, my new adult physician gave a me a prescription due to my history and told me "they will start drug testing you to make sure you're taking your pills and not selling them". I said that was fine, and legitimately never sold any and took it daily. Never requested premature refills, nothing. Take my first drug test. Had smoked pot with some friends the weekend before. Was denied my prescription, even though I know the medicine I was told they would be testing for was in my system because as I said, I had taken it every day. Had the doctor simply told me that I wasn't allowed to have anything else in my system I just wouldn't have smoked with my friends. But she didnt. Now I can't get that prescription again without going to a psychiatrist and paying a stupid amount of money for an evaluation and recommendation. I haven't tried to get my prescription back since. I hate Georgia. And I hate money grabbing bullshit.

    • @moistsqueegee9567
      @moistsqueegee9567 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Georgia is super weird about stuff like that. I was on vyvanse too, and I went to a psychiatrist every 3 months for refills after I'd moved to the state. The doctor was a very cold older man, and as we were going through my medical history, I told him that I had smoked weed in high school and gotten caught by my parents. It was maybe 3 or 4 times total, and it was a couple years prior to the appointment, but his tune changed immediately when he heard me say it. He questioned my dosage everytime that I told him how much I was on (40mg since I was about 7yo) when he was writing scripts, and when he we were discussing trying new meds for problems that I had, like insomnia and depression, he would always make a point to say under his breath as he was looking through possible medications that I couldn't have those because they were slightly addictive. He also called my mom and my previous doctor several times to verify that what I was saying was the truth, after I had been going to him for over a year, and telling my mother that since i still lived with her (as i was in college as a pre-med) that she be the only one to handle the vyvanse and lock them up afterwards. When I started seeing my GP for scripts instead, (who was just a young guy fresh out of med school) he was confused about why I was taking gabapentin if I didn't have a history of epilepsy or general pain. When I explained that I took it for sleep, he was completely baffled, as it had nothing to do with falling asleep. Turns out the psychiatrist had prescribed it to me because it's non-addictive and could help a person fall asleep in the most indirect, convoluted way possible. I had been a goody two shoes all my life, wanted to try weed to do something bad for once and got caught almost immediately. Because I told him that, he treated me like a criminal for the 18 months that I had him as my psychiatrist. Now I'm working hard to become a doctor myself, but even I understand now why people don't always trust doctors and choose to omit things

    I’m not a doctor but a social worker working with people with disabilities receiving Medicaid services in their homes so I’m in a similar realm: I’ve definitely had people removed from my caseload due to bad behavior, one of whom ended up losing their services because of it.
    The first was a guy who was extremely demanding and actually cruel to the people who worked with him- he’d turn nursing staff away because they were immigrants and he claimed he couldn’t understand them and/or because they were old and unattractive (he flat-out admitted this to me). He went through dozens of nursing agencies because no one was willing to work with him. The straw that broke the camel’s back was one time he tore into me about not caring about him even though I’d just spent the better part of a day trying to get his wheelchair replaced (he also made me cry on the phone). My manager heard the conversation and basically took the phone out of my hand.
    The second case was similar- this lady kept accusing me of not providing care because she wasn’t getting certain parts of her services. The problem was that she was also actively turning staff away and not bothering to find a suitable replacement for the shifts so they couldn’t be filled, and that she wasn’t picking up the bus pass she was approved for, which meant that she couldn’t get it anymore after missing three months in a row. She also threw me out of her house when I was doing an assessment with her and she refused to answer my questions- another requirement for her to keep her waiver services. She literally threw my umbrella at me and forced me out in the pouring rain. This ended up getting her services terminated.

      I actually sympathize with your grandmother, as I have a similar problem--new drugs freak me out. I mean, like tears and anxiety issues, etc. Took me five days to work myself up just to take the latest one, and even then I had to have someone sit with me for a few hours to make sure I didn't have an allergic reaction. (Which is really funny/sad, 'cause it was a histamine blocker. *shakes head at self*)
      Blood tests, on the other hand, I don't mind at all. Probably because, compared to the reusable needles used when I was a kid, modern ones barely ping my radar. I've had sewing accidents more painful than your usual blood draw. (Come to think of it, that might be the reason for your grandmother's phobia--those old syringes could be *painful*.)

    I got fired as a patient and it was BS. My doctor always insisted on me going into the office to get my prescription renewed each year despite my having been on the same dosage and drug for over a decade (Paxil for social anxiety, changed my life for the better). It wasn't that annoying, I always did it just for the checkup since I never needed to go to the doctor otherwise. So I had my appointment coming up on a Thursday. I realized I would run out of my medication on Monday. I just needed 2 days worth to get me to the appointment. I went in to the office and explained my issue to the receptionist lady. She went in the back and came back after a few minutes and told me the doctor said no, I would have to just wait for my appointment. I had read online that some doctors either weren't aware of or denied the existence of the terrible withdrawal effects of sudden cessation of SSRIs and thought maybe my doctor was one of these, I wasn't sure, I had been going to her for almost 10 years and it had never come up before. Anyhow, I told the receptionist that wouldn't work, the drug causes me terrible withdrawals if I don't have it for more than 24 hours. I explained I didn't want a full renewal of my prescription or anything, just literally 2 days worth, I would still come to my normal appointment. She told me to have a seat in the waiting area and I could talk to the doctor in a bit.
    So, I went and sat. 45 minutes later, I got called in the back. The doctor, with one of her nurses, took me into an exam room and started taking my vitals and junk. She was acting weird, not as friendly as usual. Then she said she would give me a renewal of my prescription but that she would no longer be able to be my doctor. I was completely confused. I asked why not. She didn't want to say. But I expressed to her that I was seriously completely mystified and did not understand what I had done. Eventually, she says the receptionist said that I became belligerent and she felt threatened. I knew that simply saying that didn't happen wouldn't do much good because she's going to believe the lady she works with every day over me. So I asked her to just let me explain my side of the story. And I explained it.
    When I was done, I asked if the receptionist had spoken to her the first time she went back. The doctor said no, she hadn't, but quickly shut up after that. They wouldn't budge on my being fired as a patient. I realized later what had happened. The receptionist didn't talk to the doctor at all. She decided herself that I didn't need the 2 days worth and could just wait for my appointment. Then when it became clear I was going to talk to the doctor, she made up a story. Once the doctor realized what had happened, she really couldn't have afforded to budge. A receptionist has no medical training, and her giving medical direction under her own volition could get the whole office in a TON of trouble. On the one hand it sucks because I liked the doctor personally and the nurses there too, but on the other hand I got a new doctor that is just radically easier to deal with. After meeting with the new doctor and talking to them for a bit they recognized that I'm not just your typical idiot and said if I ever needed antibiotics or anything simple like that I could just call and they'd phone it in. (Antibiotics aren't rocket science, people. If you have a fever that doesn't respond to NSAIDs for 48 hours, you need antibiotics. If you don't have that, you don't need antibiotics.) I go once a year for a blood panel to track my numbers and all is well.

      Dustin Rodriguez I can’t believe the Dr. didn’t reprimand that receptionist.
      When my mother was dying from cancer I was a wreck and was so disorganized. I needed a refill of my anti-anxiety meds. I called the Dr. after hours. The receptionist said only emergencies can get through to the Dr. I told her this was an emergency. I had to be semi-sane for my mom’s last days, ya know. She didn’t sound convinced. She acted as if she would pass on the info to the Dr. Next time I saw the Dr. I told her the situation. The Dr. knew my mother as well and was sorry for my loss and knew how crazy anxious I was. The receptionist was no longer working there. Don’t know if it was just a coincidence or if she was fired. I honestly hope she was fired for her lack of compassion. Yeah, I’m mean.

      My doctors' receptionists love to play god with people's conditions too, every time i need to book an appointment I get told that I'm not allowed to book an appointment over the phone unless I call the same morning that I want an appointment for (this means that unless you want to get up and call at 9am and spend an hour on hold you don't even have a chance of getting an appointment because everyone calls and fully books in about a hour, so even less people actually see their doctor)
      Luckily I know this is bullshit as I have pre-booked appointments every time and when I tell them this they suddenly forget their made up rule and book my appointment.
      Just do your fucking job and let people speak to the actual doctor about their problems instead of gatekeeping.
      I can't imagine how many people have missed or not even booked appointments because the receptionists make up a rule to make their jobs easier.

    Work as a ophthalmic technician and have seen the doctor I work for 'fire' two patients. One was a 80 year old guy that was flirting and hitting on me. Even sending love notes. He kept being creepy and inappropriate even after being asked to stop. He was then asked not to come back.
    The second was when I brought a patient back to get him checked into one of the rooms and he went off talking about how he was kicked out of another doctor's office because he was swearing. He then proceeded to re-enact the entire conversation he had with the other doctor, swearing and all, and getting very verbally violent towards me for some reason. Doctor heard what was going on came in and asked him to stop. He continued to verbally assault and swear at the doctor. He was then asked to leave. So he got kicked out of two doctors for his mouth and still didn't understand what he did wrong.

      I am confused how she would have gotten it without her knowledge. It’s a shot......wouldn’t you notice you got an injection? It seems more likely they pulled it up in the computer to give and then she said she didn’t want it, but the doctor clicked wrong and accidentally charted it as given instead of held than it was given against her will and without her knowledge. Injections usually hurt. And depo is IM so it couldn’t just be snuck in somewhere it has to go in your deltoid or glute, so unless she was wearing a tank top would require clothing to be removed.

      A lot of kids are forced by their parents to go to the psychiatrist. It's the therapist's job to make sure the kid actually wants to be here.
      Asking this question can lead to the patient giving more informations about themselves and the people they get around with.
      If the psychiatrist continued the discussion after that, then talked to the parents, leading to the kid not going to therapy anymore, I wouldn't be shocked. What was disturbing was the fact the therapist just told the teen to leave without even caring why he didn't want to be there, how were his parents etc.

    I knew someone who went to therapy for self-harming thoughts. She felt like she was getting better, and she certainly was, but the therapy center kept demanding she stayed because her presence was helping the other patients in the group. Patients that she absolutely hated because of their attitudes and how they wouldn't take anything someone in the group said seriously, least of all the people in charge.
    She hasn't gone back for a while now, so I think it's safe to assume her family blacklisted that facility in case anyone else they knew needed help, because those people sure didn't seem to care.

The OP said that the girl’s brother force feed her the peanut butter, but that’s a story that would have to have been told by the parent as the anaphylaxis of the child probably rendered her incapable of speech. It got to the point where she couldn't drive anymore, so my mother and I had to drive her to appointments, and we finally told her that we were not going to let her continue doctor shopping. Like if you're doing something on the first tuesday of the month instead of the first wednesday always, then its the exact same as doing it on the first wednesday, just on tuesday.

I could go on for days about this shit.🙅🏻‍♀️
      Or the idea that it IS POSSIBLE to have a job that requires you to travel 25% or more of the time, or that you work remotely during certain months out of the year. I mean, I am 34 years old and I’m showing you documentation to the extent that I possibly can to validate the need for a slightly altered prescription for this or whatever month (like from my employer, travel confirmations with an American Airlines confirmation code and my name and exact date(s) of travel, etc etc etc.) it’s honestly the most infuriating experience I have ever been forced to go through, and all I was trying to do was ensure I could maintain my regular daily prescriptions as I had been taking them for several years in the exact same way at this point. Like, FINE. The DEA is going to be up your ass about this???? Have them call me and they can fly to the foreign country where I will be at the time and they can open up my prescription bottle and count out my medication one by one like you would for a toddler or elderly severely altered person and when they find out that unfortunately it’s not the immediate and catastrophic threat to society that apparently I pose on the daily taking this medication and that I gasp as an adult can be responsible for my own medical best interest, *hopefully* they won’t still charge me for their return airfare, and I never want to hear even the slightest peep out of you judgmental assholes.

Yes, obviously I was terrified. Thankfully it set no phobias in and I am able to go to the dentist just fine now.

I freaking lost it. I go over and she's pulling on my daughter's legs(still). I literally shouted at her I was like get the hell out of here before I lose it even more(her exuce was babies are surprisingly durable and she wanted to make sure her legs worked) Two weeks later I had to get her a proper pediatrician. I became *EXTREMELY* skinny and it scared my mom. But we switched to a different psychiatrist after the first one tried to diagnose me as Bipolar. I have never in my life displayed symptoms of Bipolar. It wasn't until I was either somewhere in middle or high school that I was properly diagnosed with Aspergers. Aspergers basically makes it a little difficult for me to properly socialize with other people. But now I'm at a healthy weight and I'm on a dosage that we're all happy with. Like, I get it. You don't want to further someone's addiction or potentially help some become addicted. But at the same time, I've screamed my throat raw from pain before and prayed I would die. So, you know, it sucks when your doctor thinks you're just trying to get high and in reality, you can't stand up long enough to take a shower.

    • @BWMagus
      @BWMagus 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does, but it's not entirely their fault either. Right now, doctors are scared absolutely shitless. They are getting arrested for writing one to many prescriptions, which is bullshit when you consider that a doctor serving a lot of seniors in one area is probably going to legitimately give more pain killers than a doctor working in a younger, healthier, hip part of town. Our attempts to stop the opioid crises also means fucking over people who need them.

    I have fired several doctors, mostly because they simply don't care. The last one I fired told me that I "might have" broken my ankle - because I was fat (I actually tripped over a garden hose and heard it crunch). He then made me walk back out to my car, drive to another facility, walk from their parking lot to get an x-ray, and then go home. No meds, no instructions, nothing. Two (2) days later he calls me and says "yea, it looks like it is broken, come back in if you want (if you want???) and we can take a look at it". It took me another 3 days to get an appt to get the splint. By then my foot looked the size of a basketball and it was the color of grape juice. He took one look at it and had the guts to yell at me for waiting. I tore into him and told him exactly what I thought of his shoddy behavior. I reported him to the medical board. Wound up going to the hospital and getting a cast. That doctor there said it was obviously broken, even without x-rays, and should have been taken care of immediately. I am lucky to still have a foot. If you are not some super-model type, doctors treat you badly. I have never had one treat me with even the slightest bit of respect. Sure, I admit I am overweight. Get over it and do your job.

I have a tumor in my spine. If it turns out to be cancer I won't be able to afford treatment and I will die. having that talk with your loved ones is not the best feeling in the world. we are living in a dystopian hellscape

      On the other end of the spectrum, there are those who have their insurance paid by employers, with or without a percentage paid by the employee. But it's not cheap--mine costs my employer some $8,800/year. (Of course, with what they actually pay ME, they ought to be able to afford it, LOL.)
      Still, it's the cost of health insurance that's keeping me from early retirement--I could live on my pension, but not if I have to pay health insurance out of it for the next ten years.

    • @BWMagus
      @BWMagus 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      London M there is wrong; the pre-existing condition thing hasn't been true since the ACA was passed like 8 years ago. But the general idea is true. Basically, we pay a lot for insurance, and a lot for care (although a shit load of that cost is not because of the private companies but because of ridiculous legal rules). And if you have no money, it sucks. On the other hand, we have easy access to care. Like, super-easy. I could go get an MRI right now, literally down the street. CT scan, X-rays, any kind of shot or medication I need, I could get within a day. If you have the money, there's nothing you can't get taken care of right away, unless it's some extremely rare problem that requires a super-specific specialist and fancy equipment that only exists in one state. Even then, I could get that done in a few weeks at most. When I developed a throat ulcer, I just left work, went across the street, got seen. They sent me a mile away to get scanned, and a day later, I got scoped. Done. I didn't have to suffer for several weeks before getting confirmation on anything. And I'm not rich, never have been. So while part of me understands the appeal of nearly free health care, I'm also so glad I don't have to have to deal with crippling problems for weeks or months before getting actual treatment.
