    2:33 reminds me of a historical event that was quite similar, though not nearly as bad.
    While vacationing in Crimea, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (the first human being in space) was drunkenly snogging a nurse in a hotel room, when his wife approached the door and demanded to know what (or who) he was doing. Not wanting to be caught cheating, he decided the best solution was to throw himself out the 2nd story window.
    Unfortunately, he didn’t qualify for a Darwin Award, as 1) he didn’t die or destroy his balls, and 2) he was already a father by this point. He did, however, receive an injury from the fall, which left him with a scar on his eyebrow for the rest of his life.
    Truly, even the greatest people can do incredibly stupid things.

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      In his food service training and experience (all be it old school), the first, foremost, and paramount principle pounded into EVERYBODY was that there is no excuse for guests to have to actually worry about the safety of things they consume, ever... as in EVER.
      It takes SO little to use the proper heat settings in the equipment and the right amount of time for the serving that there's actually no good reason anything should be poorly prepared. We've got the technology and science of everything from thermodynamics to the rate of penetration of fluids into meat over time... AND how to effect any of those equations, whether it involves cutting into smaller pieces, adding a little heat, or stabbing the meat repeatedly with sharp instruments.
      It takes almost no time nor research at all to understand at the very SIMPLEST 180F for 10 minutes renders any dish safe enough to eat. It won't guarantee it to be pleasant, and in most cases quite the opposite... BUT it will be safe. A very little research, even just buying a $1 Cookbook from 50 years ago, will reveal safe serving temperatures for any variety of meat... from beef to poultry, fish, and even Game if you just look for it... Nowadays, you can even just Google it.
      AND I wouldn't doubt he's seen (firsthand) the aftermath of someone being poisoned on poorly prepared food, undercooked meat, and unclean utensils or kitchen. He's definitely heard horror stories. We all have a few of those from a friend or relative... at the very least. To Gordon Ramsay, it's an insult to the profession and his passion to serve something raw when it's clearly unsafe to do so... AND yet, that's one of the top 5 most often committed wrongs in the culinary world... even with no excuse to do so.
      Hell, I've been food-poisoned a half dozen times in my 40 odd years. Every single time it happened was a public food service... EVERY SINGLE TIME... AND I'm self taught at making friggin' sushi. I didn't learn under a Japanese chef. I didn't go to a school or take a class. I bought a book, some bamboo rolling mats, and the ingredients. I still haven't managed to poison myself. I've slow-smoked meat, and fermented practically everything from hot sauce to beer and pickles... I've made my own sourdough and yogurt and even cheese... BUT the only times I've suffered weeks of projectile vomit and explosive diarrhea were the results of a "professional" preparing my food.
      I even at ham the color of a japanese beetle in the Navy, and didn't get sick... metallic yellow/green shine and all...
      BUT the professionals nearly killed me... AND THAT is why Gordon Ramsay gets totally livid when some schmuck tries to serve a customer something RAW... If it was me, I'd slice it to show them, and then THEY WOULD EAT THE GOD DAMN THING... ;o)

      @@gnarthdarkanen7464 I used t be a afraid to eat sushi because of the possibility of food poisoning. With my medical issues it could end badly for me. But once I tried it I fell in love. Best part is I haven't had food poisoning from it, or ever since my mom burns almost everything.

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@saphiriathebluedragonknight375 I think everybody (who eats sushi) in the western world goes through that about sushi. Some might not fall in love, but I took the chance and bought the book and mats and followed through... so you can probably tell where it went with me. (lolz)
      I've since corrupted my brother, and mother... who was similar in her culinary practices.
      Keep a clean kitchen, and pay attention to the basic requirements of it, and you can learn to prepare just about everything. Not all sushi is necessarily raw nor necessarily contains fish... SO when you're not completely sure of where to get fish, don't sweat it. You can still learn to make good sushi between now and finding a good source.
      AND curing, pickling, fermenting, etc... have slightly different requirements from ordinary cooking. NONE of it is particularly difficult. It can be tedious and time consuming, but not really difficult.
      I'm glad you've never suffered food poisoning. It's something I wouldn't wish upon anyone. AND from professionals, there really isn't a good excuse for it. ;o)

    For those who don't know, capsaicin (in the story that starts at 12:03) is the chemical that makes chili peppers spicy. It also burns your eyes and is in pepper spray. Basically, if you can imagine how much your nose would burn if you _snorted_ pepper spray and multiplied that by about 7, that's what that guy did by snorting pure capsaicin. It probably irritated (to put it mildly) his nose and lungs and affected his ability to breathe.

    • @lunargames5246
      @lunargames5246 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does; didn't snort it but I was eating leftover Mexican food it was shredded pork accidentally hiccuped when swallowing a few fibers got lodged up the back of my throat when it closed using it into my nose. Not far enough to pull out but enough to have it hang on both sides where my tongue nor fingers could get it. After about 5 minutes of shaking my head and rising my nose I finally got it out! Whooo!!

      I'll share my story...
      I decided that the tree in my family's home needed to be trimmed, but I was an idiot kid...
      So what do I decide to do? Well, that's obvious isn't it? I got out my dads circular saw...
      I carefully secured the guard open so it would cut the big branches, then secured a 3' rope to the handle/my waist (to keep from dropping saw), plugged it in & started climbing!
      While making my 1st cut, the saw jams & bucks out of my hands, before bouncing around at the end of the rope, mere inches from my body.
      That's when things really went crazy, the rope tangled in the blade/guard & started violently flying all over the place.
      With each jump, it chewed up more rope, bringing the blade ever closer to my body. I couldn't do anything to stop it because I was using my hands to not fall out of the tree.
      I was freaking out until moments before it would finally reach me, & thankfully, the rope jammed the blade to a stop, just as the saw finally swung into my leg.
      I was very lucky, the saw only caused a few punctures & cuts. Less lucky, for the falling out of tree & dislocating lots of joints part but still recently than... If I had landed on the saw, it may have killed with or without the blade moving under power.
      Naturally, my parents made sure that I was in way more pain /badly hurt after they got ahold of me, than that caused by my own stupidity. My dad was so pissed I destroyed his circular saw... I'm surprised he didn't just end my life the moment he discovered it. I don't expect he'll ever forgive me for it.

    I knew a nurse who told me she had an older guy come in to ER after he finished a round of golf, noticed a buck kangaroo next to his expensive car and tried to shoo him away by running at him waving his arms and shouting. She had to hold his shredded testicles together while the doctor sewed them up. Luckily he'd already had his kids because they're was no saving the functionality of them.

    I had asthma as a child and had an asthma Attack before( I don’t remember what it was like), and my parents, with their infinite wisdom, decided not to give me an inhaler at all. They think that ice water is a bigger safety concern. Also my mother told me that she had the air cushions in her cars were removed, she removed them when my older brother was born. She still doesn’t have air cushions. There really should be a special kind of Darwin Award, where irresponsible parents get it for endangering their kids.

Less lucky, for the falling out of tree & dislocating lots of joints part but still very lucky... If I had landed on the saw, it may have killed me with or without the blade moving under power.
    Adam

      I find it hilarious that you signed with your name at the end. I also find it criminal (and so does the law) to beat your children. And I think the thing that defines one as literally the most mentally unexceptional a parent can be is punishing your kids after they get hurt or lose something that they cared about. Hmm, you almost died and hurt yourself really hard? Let me hurt you even further because I literally share IQ scores with a walnut, my father was a garden hose, and my mother is the dumpster behind McDonald's!

      I’m so sorry for you 😓 Trying to do something helpful and nice, and this is what you get. At 13, I fell 60 feet out of a tree. I tree limb stuck into my knee causing my knee to seriously swell. But, something my parents couldn’t see, was fractured neck vertebrae. Yep, Dad wouldn’t allow me to go to the hospital. Waited three days till he went to work, mom snuck me to the hospital. Rushed to specialist hospital, spent days there, then months in a brace. Dad felt like crap, but still. Neglectful parents are awful. Abusive parents are worse. Hang in there, Adam. 😊

    so, I know of one, I don't work the field but I think we can all agree this might fit here.
    There was a guy who broke his leg, pritty baddly. His idea to remidy this so he could walk was about 2 things of duck tape and a few sticks. No, this wasn't done out in the wilderness, the guy's back yard. He found out after doing this that, yes he couldn't bend his knee any more, but it didn't hurt, so he figured it must have fixed it and continued on with his life. A few days later he ends up dieing because of a large blood clot that formed. He had wrapped the duck tape up so tightly that blood couldn't flow corectly, so he ended up dieing because of it.
    I only know of this story for one of my substitute teachers in highschool was a driver for Emergency Responces. He called in a few moments before dropping dead.

      Another one, slightly more personal...
      there is a river that flows through the town I grew up in. There is a warning stating "Do not jump here, water at its deepest is 5 foot deep" and was a good 60 foot drop. Aparently some teen had the bright idea that sign was wrong dispite there was a little flipper to adjust for water hight and, what we can only asume was correct, flipped it to 50 foot deep and then jumped. He didn't even land in the water, head burst like a watermellon on the rocks.
