Years ago on my way home, pouring down rain coming around the corners to Oakland Oregon, there was a soaked Hippie guy walking the edge of the road all metal Dobro above his head. I pulled up next to him to give him a ride to town and he went to jump in the back and I motioned for him to get in the cab. Soaked to the bone I turned the fan up to high and the heat all the way up. I introduced myself, he wasn't much of a talker but I got out of him his name was Scottie Nicholes, he was bumming around since he got out of Viet Nam. That year in the Spring and Summer months I picked him up a lot of times, we got to be friends and I found out that he was scared to go home because of the stigma that was given to the Vets from the V.N. conflict. The guy didn't talk much at all but give him a few beers and my god the guy would make that Dobro sing in a way that would bring tears to your eyes, they did mine. I would look for him on the weekends and ask him to play at our home. My older brother and I always had something going on at the weekends. About four years later I notice a difference in Scotty and got him drunk, it was the only time he would open up. He didn't tell me he was sick but I knew he was but wouldn't go to the V.A. Hospital just 14 miles to the south. He saw nothing but death. What the Americans, N.V. and Russia did to the men, women and children there in Viet Nam. He had night mares and hardly ever slept. The time I got him drunk after playing, I got it out of him his families location in Connecticut. It took months to finally talk to them and I arranged for a party for donations to get Scotty home. I told Scotty that I'd talked to his Father, Mother and Sister and they understood it all, saw it all on the news and saw how people treated Vets and were waiting for him to cum home to them in their loving arms. I never once heard one word out of Scotty from then on up to the minute he was getting on the Grey Hound, He shock my hand with one arm my shoulder, Brother in Arms hug. He had a tear in his eye and turned and got on the bus! I never saw him again, never heard from him or his family ever again. That was about 1977 or 78, 46 years ago, dang I'm getting old now, lol. I've never in my life heard anyone play like Scotty. He had to be in about three beers to get started but he was amazing. I haven't told this story in a long long time. I hope that when he got back home he was able to open up and play like he did for us here in Oakland Oregon! Yes, I hope your alive and doing well Scottie! I've missed you all these years.
