Briggs is great. I've subscribed to his World According to Briggs channel for years, and he has a This Day in History channel too. About opioids. My oldest son had surgery for a sports injury when he was in high school. In the hospital he kept asking for one of the pain killers he'd been given. Before I could get too worried, the surgeon came by and it turned out he didn't like the opioids. The good stuff he wanted more of was ibuprofen, the over the counter stuff. And when I had open heart surgery last year, I refused any more opioids four days after the surgery. Opioids definitely aren't for everybody.

The tallest mountain in the world base to peak is Mauna Kea in Hawaii. The peak elevation isn't as high as Mt. Everest, or even Denali, but it rises from the ocean floor. Measured from there, it's 33,497 feet (10,210 meters) tall.

Fun reaction, Diane. Some things about the U.S. you probably didn't know:
    1. Alaska is big.
    9. The Moon landing? That was us.
    21. The U.S. has the world's largest economy.
    22. "Most people" don't know the Wright brothers' airplane had a motor.
    34. The U.S. has the world's largest military budget (see #21).
    43. The U.S. rail network apparently averages one bridge every 1.4 miles.
    49. In 1893 (1895 in the Gregorian Calendar), Ohio was still known by its original name, "Kentucky." Kentucky, at that time, was called Extremely-West Virginia.
Man, you learn something new every day.

  • @FlyingTigress

@9:52 She'd paid into Social Security for only a few months, and received benefits until (going from memory) the 1950s.
@10:08 At one point in time, there was around 200,000 miles of railroad tracks. However, consolidation of railroad companies - and thus the closure of superfluous raillines - and the abandonment of other railroad lines, led to the current figure.
Alaska also cost about 2 cents per acre. Fun fact: Years ago, the National Geographic Society published a map that showed the State of Alaska overlaid the Lower 48 - at the same map scale. The tip of the Aleutian Island chain was shown as being near Santa Barbara, California and the southern tip of the Alaska Panhandle was shown as being near Jacksonville, Florida.

The heart transplant story is dead wrong. The first successful human heart transplant did occur in 1967, but not in the U.S. Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed that procedure on Louis Washansky in South Africa. I'm old enough to remember (it was obviously worldwide news) but I looked it up to be sure.
In case the narrator was referring to a non-human heart transplant, that was done on a dog in 1958 in California.

    • @michaelallen5505
      @michaelallen5505 ปีที่แล้ว

I already knew about the South African transplant, but when I heard the narrator say, "the first successful heart transplant was performed in the United States in 1967", I interpreted it to mean the first one performed in the United States, not in the world. So, that could be a true statement. Or he could be "dead wrong." Or he could be right. Maybe he was trying to mislead us by cleverly twisting the facts. Now I don't know what to believe. 🤔
Although, I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't call it "successful."
"The first human-to-human heart transplant in the United States and the second in the world was performed by Adrian Kantrowitz 3 days later, on December 6, 1967, at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. The recipient was an 18-day-old male infant who received the heart of a 2-day-old anencephalic male. The procedure, carried out under hypothermia rather than cardiopulmonary bypass, was technically successful; however, the patient died 6½ hours after surgery with severe metabolic and respiratory acidosis."
      -The Texas Heart Institute Journal

I would also like to visit her someday. #16 But the central span is only 4,260 feet. #26 WRONG. The first successful heart transplant was performed in South Africa in 1967 (by Christiaan Barnard); I remember that. The first successful transplant in the US was in 1968 (by Denton Cooley). I did very poorly from grammar school through my sophomore year of college.
Once I was done with of the required courses I didn't care about I excelled through to a Master's Degree. I've always read a lot and from the age of 22 through 60 I read at least two books a week depending on size.
At Hofstra College then University now speed reading was a required course. We were tested twice a week on speed and comprehension. I got the best scores on the first test and concluded as the most improved reader. But learning how to absorb up to 15 words at a glance and just get enough out of it took the joy out of reading.
The books on reading by fiction writers said to deliberate on each sentence as much as the author did. Great advice if you have a year to devote to each book. Still I got the point, slowed down, and understood the written word and the authors better.
“Novel writing doesn’t breed serenity. It is lying, you know, and the novelist has to spend a lot of time during the course of his writing worrying about whether he is going to get away with his lies. If he fails to, his novel isn’t going to work.” Kurt Vonnegut, 1980

Serial killers may also be harder to identify in a large area (like all of Europe - crossing all those borders, fewer detectives, any number of differences/reasons) than in a single country the size of the US.
A lot of these "highest/most" are likely to be as a result of being the 3rd most populous country in the world (like chocolate consumption. Switzerland is tiny vs US).

-Alaska despite being the largest state in landmass, has a smaller population than Rhode Island
--The Golden Gate Bridge is named for San Fransico Bay colloquially known as the Golden Gate.
-The fWright Flyer and Apollo 11 are separated by only 66 years.
That last gets me thinking because it is possible that people both witnessed the first flight and watched the moon landing.

He is incorrect about the heart transplant. It was performed by a South African doctor (who was educated in America) in South Africa.
In 1964, the first attempt at a human to human heart transplant was tried in Mississippi, but the patient only lived 90 minutes and never regained consciousness. Even Barnard's patient only lived 18 days.
BTW Barnard practiced on 48 dogs before attempting with a human.
The first successful KIDNEY transplant was performed in the USA in 1953.

A couple of wrong facts there, the largest diamond, some 7 thousand carets, was found in SA (a British Colony) but was sent through the post, Royal Mail, but on a warship as was most official mail at the time, to London and then cut by a Dutch Diamond Cutter into 6 diamonds, 4 are in the English Crown Jewels and 2 in the Royal Collection. Cullinan 1 to 6, half the total weight being lost (becoming industrial diamonds) in the cutting and polishing of them. The longest escalator, 2, 1 up and 1 down is on the London Underground.

America has so many serial killers because it has both Kellogg and Post as original companies. In fact, Mr. Post worked for Mr. Kellogg and helped invent the corn flake. He then left the company and formed his own, using toasted corn flakes (hence Post Toasties) to avoid a lawsuit. What? Wrong serial? Never mind. This has been Rosanne Rosannadanna "Live from New York".

Teachers always thought I wasn't paying attention because I wouldn't take notes while they talked. I would sit there and and listen with nothing on my desk. They would always assume I was lazy until there was the first test in the class and I would get the best grade of anyone in the class. My writing was so slow that if I tried to write something down I would miss the next 3-4 things they said as I concentrated on writing it, so I just stopped taking notes and listened.

I don't know if America has the biggest amount of opioid users when a lot of places either don't have the resources to get accurate statistics or in places like Thailand and other eastern/middle eastern countries have opium and other opiates ingrained in their culture, but officially the penalties are so extreme good luck getting people to line up to tell their government they do any drugs let alone hard drugs. As bad as the war on drugs has been at least people in America can admit they have a problem without capital punishment.
