- I know the name of only two people in this jam session; McCoy Borg, the banjo player & Josh-mandolin.. I think the woman playing bass is from Ohio. Spring Festival @ Townsend, TN 5-5-12.

It's funny how simple ordinary people always hide some amazing and beautiful talents. This video is a perfect picture of it.
True
By far the best version of Cherokee shuffle on the internet! Thanks Borg.
That’s one of the most beautiful sounding RB’s I’ve ever heard!

Can't wait until I move to Tennessee to go and listen to ordinary people play outside like this always enjoyed it more than anything. This one is saved in my favorites guys for 2 years. Those 28 losers can kiss my ass....... really 200K views and only 852 likes!! Hope to see some of you playing sometime guys! Cudos to the person that recorded it.
They are awesome. I really enjoyed the banjo player. Wish there was more of him.
I know...im late
That’s the tone which every banjo (player) should strive for.
And that’s how it’s done! Keeping the tradition alive. Thank you all

You can feel and hear the typical culture of the United States in this video.

Man my favorite part of music is the Harmony of which it brings people together. It helps us go through struggled in life, and can take you all over the world. It has so much power.
Great music, great talent.
Whoever these guys are, they are just KILLIN' it...

McCoy Borg, damn. It has been 7 years since this video was posted, I can't imagine how this man plays banjo now. Already expert level 7 years ago, would love to see an updated vid of his banjo playing. What a legend
Actually most expert,in the shadow musicians have regular jobs and families, bluegrass is not a good paying job, we just wanna have fun !! My wife and I are happier that way!!🥰🥰🙃

Are you saying you're a expert ? Because I'm hunting professional family orientated musicians to do a documentary on.
Old boy was picking that banjo. All these boys were picking. Praise the lord
Absolutely awesome 👍👍
Awsome great players the cherokee shuffle is great, really enjoy this i play banjo by myself and i love this melodc picking, greetings from Bavaria ☺
Excellent players. Great banjo player - really enjoyed this!
Best wishes from Ireland
Rock Stars!!! Love It... Thanks for posting.
Great players! And i didn't know a mandolin could sound so good.
The attachments on the instuments are Electonic Tunner's you just clamp them on the peghead or in the resinator and you can Keep your Banjo, guitar or any other intument in tune without disturbing other Players. great Invention.
Very nice! The banjo kind of took the stage, im sorry for the other instruments, but the banjo just sounds sooo good.
I live in wheeling WV. I found a couple good jams so I can stay sane til summer
Unforgettable Jam,thanks a lot
best sounding rb 250 I've heard.
I have one of those......can't play like that though
Buddy, I've been playing bluegrass banjo\guitar as a second for most of my life. I'm 28 now, started around 11. So I have heard people playing this tune many times over the years but the Cherokee shuffle just never made much sense. After listening to you pick this maybe 20 times it absolutely inspired me to get my mastertone out and try this one again. I really dig your style with all the pull offs and melodic stuff, then the guy playing mandolin right after with the more simplified melody really helped me figure this one out. Thanks brother, I have no clue where your at or If ya still pick but I would sure like to sit down with you one evening.
Al Quimby as a banjo player agree with you
The Banjo player is the real McCoy. This is the best Cherokee Shuffle I've heard.

Great sound guys. Great playing.
That scenery makes me wanna go build me a log cabin up in them there hills, find me an orphaned baby bear I can raise and call Ben... always wanted to do that.
That is one nice sounding RB250 Gibson, I have the same banjo classic sound guys 🤟
Now that is just as good as one would ever hear....loved it Gings.

Would like to go there one day, good job people!

Shady grove, Earles Breakdown? n John Henry!? really very awesome i must say!!!
EXCELLENT!!!!
Great jam
The best way to get better is to play with better pickers. That's the benefit of jams like this. That and pure-d fun.
brillant best wishes from ireland..
top notch five string picking! great sounding instrument
Great stuff.
Love that banjo playing!
Man I tell ya what. From about 1:44 til 4:00 minutes in, that seriously brought a tear to my eye. Everyone on point. But that banjo has such a great tone, it's like a whole new world... What is that???
To answer my own question, it's an RB250. Just like mine. Wow, I need to have a talk with this guy.
You find a good RB hang on to it, not all the early 70s sounded the same.
Brilliant! Sounds like they recorded it in a studio!
Very nice.
Love pickin with this guy, he is a fine muscian put any instrument in his hand and he plays it. Great young folks at Townsend Spring and Fall Festivals to hear.
Man that 'jo rings like a bell!!!
McCoy can play anything with just as much gusto!
great job.
Great Job
wow, nice work gentlemen!
Man. I feel like the longer I live in Tennessee, the more I like banjos.
Awesome
That banjo rings like a bell!
Absolutely ef...I was going to swear there but thought better of it , I play this over and over again.
Listen to that banjo... Good Lord Sounds about as good as Earl's Granada!
cool stuff
mighty fine picking boys
Mark Queen smoking the flattop.
i could pull a lawn chair up to this anyday
Boy that banjo is loud as hell!
Loud and great!
He really drive it
Super tight head 93 or 94.
I play an RB250, wish i played as well as this guy
That is my Banjo's brother/sister....... Gibson RB 250. Same Clamshell tail piece, same inlay...ur on my facebook
Thought that banjo was gonna catch fire.
The number count as it stands is 26,966.....I suspect the 966 are mine.
Bridgit Campbell and the other 26,000 are mine :)
Just coming in 3 years later to say that I still go back and watch this. Honestly, that banjo tone, so amazing...
McCoy has probably been playin longer than the boy in orveralls, i give him credit for being out there....im learnin the banjo myself and its a lot of work, i just hope i will get to the point where my playin sounds this good though.
Yeehaw!!
nice mandolin solo
野外でこの音質。PA凄い!
Awesome playing! What is that black box on top of that right banjo? Love from The Netherlands.
The guy in the brown shirt playing banjo sounds great and so does his banjo. is that a modern Gibson banjo? You got yourself a keeper.
can't tell if that is an old rb 3 or a super dooper good rb 250. well either way you can't go wrong lol
I wish I could find an outdoor jam
+88SouthernMan Townsend is the best place I know of. I'm not sure where you live, but I know they have Tu night james on the square in Marietta, GA
88SouthernMan Summerville wv, the week before the bluegrass festival you can come for free all day long and jam all day! ( and yes its outside, it rained on us last year so we had to take it under the pavilion)
Does anyone know if this group have any CD's out.
What year is that RB250
..love that old D-28! ...On CHEROKEE SHUFFLE, I'd like to point out the following: -its much better to play the low F# on the first part, i.e.-4th fret on the D string, and save the F# you used on first part for the bridge part, and omit the F# that you used on the bridge. or maybe use it for an alternate!
Where is this? Sort of looks like the mountains of North Georgia..
Does anyone know the history of that banjo? It looks a lot like a 1970's 2-piece flange Gibson RB-250. Is it?
Well, I can answer my own question now that I heard from McCoy on facebook. That banjo is an all-original 1974 Gibson RB-250.
So much for anybody saying the 70's 250's don't sound good. That thing is a cannon. He sure does hammer on it.
Banjo & mandolin tear it up @1:43
What is the name of the banjo player with the brown shirt ?
...P.S. ..this info pertains to MANDOLIN.
Could yall straighten that flag pole? Thanks
Shelby Jean on the bass.
What are the specifics of this banjo? Make, year, tone ring, wood, etc. anyone?
Joseph Anderson it’s a 1974 Gibson RB-250 completely original. It’s all mahogany.
McCoy Borg Great tone. I assume is does have a maple rim though, correct?
This RB has one of the good rings in it. The early 70s were the target period for these good rings. The later RBs were not as good.
What is the attachment on the peg head on several instruments that are already called up?
Tuners?
clip on tuners, NOT the Banjo tuning pegs
Bridgit Campbell Bridgit, not tuners... but on the banjo and several other instruments there are attachments clamped on the pegheads, have noticed it in several different posts, mostly in jam sessions, even in different parts of the country.
God I love the snappy crack of the banjo, I have an identical banjo, well not the same one but one that looks the same but does not sound like that one, maybe I need a new rim, or maybe I need submerged strings or Chinese finger picks. watcha rekon? and it does not end there. Today I bought a pair of Schallers all I have to do now is figure out how to use them. Stand up the person who said she has more money than brains?
+Bridgit Campbell I know how to get your banjo to sound like McCoy's. Just have him play it!
*Well Joe there's a thought*
Is that all them people do up there, watch Tennessee football and play bluegrass?
They are fucking awesome.
Where is this location?
e081194eng ....Townsend Tennessee USA....
