I like to think of it like a daytime drama. It's only cancelled until they go back to the writers room and come up with a better message. This is the difference between cancelled and exiled although I think some don't understand the distinction.

It's a little like when Jeremy Kyle got very bad press because one of their recent guest's death, suddenly it was like everybody hated the show, and it was almost expected to denounce it in some way. It was one of the more highly rated and watched shows on daytime tv and will likely be again if and when it returns. People don't care about the death... if they did then they'd care at least somewhat about the people dying on the streets in their own neighbourhood, or literally anything similar, but they don't... the difference here is that they get to feign caring to get their anger fix, they're basically getting off.

Actually, I'm convinced the people who jump into canceling barely even know about the receiver, I had no intention of looking more into JC's cancellation because I didn't like him in the first place, I liked seeing that little shit get a taste of the real world, BUT I'd get a hard time "canceling" someone I like because I saw them grow and know them and probably understand their decisions, had I watched JC maybe I'd be like "Come on! He's young and he's always struggling to find a bf! Don't judge him for flirting with a bicurious guy!" But nope, I didn't know that nor cared, like most people who jumped into cancelling him.

Fr like that's literally the first thing people tell you about trans discourse. Correct name and pronouns are basic decency afforded to even the most vile and objectively horrible cis people, and thus it must also be extended to trans people, regardless of anyone's opinion on them or how bad they are/seem. It's not that hard to do. But this kind of "discourse" is meant specifically to isolate, distress, and emotionally mutilate the target, in this case Natalie. So these people will use whatever they can to make her squirm. It's simple playground bully shit: if you have a soft spot, it will be exploited.

it's especially when people associate being "good" with things that agree with a certain viewpoint. i, myself, am a sensitive snowflake leftist but a lot of these kids on twitter definitely have not experienced enough life to determine that not knowing what to say and even what to believe will not make any "good" person become "bad." it almost calls for being safe in how we express ourselves and not saying exactly how we feel so that no one ever gets offended and/or invalidated. i do feel for them though. most of them likely find their validation from the online community so (especially someone like Contra who they likely look up to) expressing an opinion that can be in any way understood as invalidating will lead them to spiral. we definitely need a group therapy session after this lol

Back in 2015, I had a fairly popular blog. I wrote stupid porn scenarios and poetry and for SOME god awful reason this caused teens to reach out to me about their problems. And the issue was that I cared. I cared a LOT about protecting these kids. If anyone came to me in crisis, I would give them steps to make a burner skype account and try to help - sometimes this involved teaching them how to find local health resources, work through scary social issues, or just talk about whatever they wanted until 6am and they safely got through the night - then I'd immediately head out to work at my shitty cafe job directly afterwards.
I like to think I saved a lot of kids. I can't count how many times one of these kids would reach out later and say something like "it's been six months since we talked. I'm still here." Or "things DID get better. I almost didn't get to see it."
I only ever "lost" one kid. She was a stranger from scottland who reached out to me on my personal skype. She was the first kid to ask for a video call, and I obliged. The way she was typing made me nervous. She was already overdosed and dying in front of me. I stayed calm and talked with her while my boyfriend furiously researched in the background how we contact poison control in Scotland - hell, how we could even send help to the right place. She didn't cooperate. She was committed. The last thing she said was "I'm glad I don't have to die alone. I'm glad you were nice." It damn-near broke me.
    So now, DRAMA.
This one lady (she was twenty six, I was twenty one. Idk) was pretty vocal about her disdain for my "self-righteous goody-two-shoes fakeness" or whatever. She heard from someone about my literal, current truama of watching a child die and then .. used it.
She started a rumor that I purposely talked that girl into committing suicide.
That rumor spread into this concept that I'd done this MANY times. People who I previously helped were now going "oh my god that could have been me I was one of the lucky ones"
Once the DOXing and death threats started, I deleted everything. Just went totally nuclear. Maybe that looks like an admission of guilt, but at the time I feared that maybe what I was doing was well and truly dangerous to these kids, and it was the only responsible thing to do.
Haven't really done anything online since.
Best decision of my life to delete my blog and all my social media, though. Massive detox I tell yeah

Ever hear the story of the girl and the starfish?
The right thing to do is often grueling, pointless, thankless, and endless, but hey, it still matters. A lot of people are better off because of what you did, and even if they want to vilify you and lie about you, you still did the right thing. They might condemn you, but the truth is between you and the universe, and words and hate can never stand between that relationship.

It’s scary how similar cancelling is to bullying. I was bullied and ostracised a lot in school because I was on the spectrum (although no one knew at the time), and a lot of what you said in this video hit home to me. I’d be fairly well-liked, then I’d make a slip-up and immediately be seen as the enemy. I was then seen as an evil pyschopath, and any attempt at apology, niceness or learning whatever social rule I’d broken got twisted into evidence of my manipulativeness. It’s a viscious cycle, that in my earnest attempts to rectify whatever wrongdoings I had supposedly done ended with my mental health being so badly damaged I became the sterotypical “I’m sorry you probably hate me” suicidal person - i.e the poster child for “evil manipulative people”.
Nobody wins. All I ever wanted was someone to take me aside and gently explain where I went wrong.

I am also a neuroatypical person, and I actually had to turn off this video the first time I watched it because I was, at the time, being bullied on a whole new level. What Natalie said spoke to me so much it brought back a flood of terrible words that had been said to me. I really related to when she talked about trying to explain yourself only for it to escalate further. When you are bullied (or cancelled), nobody is going to give you the benefit of the doubt. Even your most innocuous statement will be vilified.
I'm glad I am in a stronger place and could finish the video. It was quite therapeutic to know even people I admire go through it. I hope you are also doing better, and I know what it's like to be bullied and not capable of "reading the room", but it's important to remember that the people who bullied you weren't criticizing you because they had no concern for your well-being, and they didn't want to help you. They wanted to hurt you, so try not to let the things they said or did destroy you going forward.

Ugh, yes. I’ve had this happen in romantic relationships a lot. I’m lately starting to understand that I’m probably undiagnosed autistic and honestly a lot of things makes so much sense now. Every time I dated a woman and expressed any sort of frustration, displeasure or hurt by something she said or did or even if I just voiced my insecurities and fears, it was always seen as me being manipulative. My genuine feelings and behaviours were always twisted into “Oh you’re trying to make me feel bad.” which quickly escalated into “You’re a manipulator.” and I never understood where it was coming from and for several years I even believed that I’m manipulative, because surely I have to be - basically all women I’ve been with said so.

As a “generation Jones” boomer, I had to deal with 2nd wave feminism. I joined a feminist art group, because I felt I belonged, until I heard them trashing their mothers for working as secretaries. This was in the late 70s, and women still didn;’t have much of a choice career-wise. I finally realized that feminism as it was at that time benefitted primarily middle to upper class white women. I stood up to them and their cluelessness, and was shunned by most. As an artist, it did affect the support I received from the feminist art community. The difference was that I was trashed in the analog world. But I think it consistently affects my ability to exhibit, when I call out the TERFs in the art community. Oh fucking well

I am doing the essentialism thing to myself - if I make a mistake I have come to believe that I am a flawed and bad person because of it. Because that is how I see other people react on mistakes made by celebrities. I think it is important that we reconsider what effect cancelling has on the psyche of ordinary people as well, and that doesn't mean that we should stop holding anyone accountable, but perhaps we need to figure out a better and healthier way, not just for celebrities sake but for our own sake as well.

This conversation wasn't in the video. The driver was hearing a one sided conversation and the video was just their version of the conversation as they heard it with a photo of the passenger. Soon enough they had found this passenger and were trying to get them fired. I'm nonbinary and you HELPED ME GET HERE!!!
I was so worried like "What if I transition to nonbinary and then REALISE I'M ACTUALLY BINARY TRANS"
Total, TOTAL disaster, I told everyone the wrong pronouns, I dressed the wrong way, I made a total fool of myself!!! Travesty.
And then I watched a video by TheHealthyGamerGG in which you told Dr K about your transition process of thinking you were nonbinary on the way to realising you are a woman. And this totally fucking calmed me down. You helped me realise that I could just... change things later if I did them wrong. There's no pressure. My trans journey is mine and it's nobody else's fucking business. And stubborn cis people may hate on me for it. And stubborn trans people may also say that I "think that nonbinary is just a phase on the way to becoming binary trans!!!"
But I'll know otherwise. I can deal with the hate. I don't owe any of those people anything.
And in turn, that idea led to me realising that I don't owe anyone androgyny either, or femininity, or using the "correct pronouns", even that the only type of "correctness" associated with pronouns is whether they help expressing oneself in the way one wishes to express oneself.
In other words, Natalie, coming across your content for the first time was pivotal in my questioning and helped lead me to being the bad bitch nonbinary they/she SJW I am today! (I don't do a lot of activism yet and I am definitely not a bad bitch - I am working on both of these tho lol, also on becoming one of Ryan's transgender furry anarchist friends in antifa ;3)
And in the year since then that I have been slowly eating my way through your past videos, I have never felt like you hold any judgement or contempt against nonbinary people. I have always felt accepted and understood. I love you ContraPoints. Seriously. These people should actually watch your videos before making snap judgements about you.

I am not trans myself, but I know for a fact, based on what I have heard from MANY trans people I've either known personally, or watched on TH-cam, that once they have finished the transition process, or actually, even before that, most trans people just want to live their lives and get on with things. They don't want to constantly talk about being trans, they don't want gender brought up at every opportunity by people, they just want to live lol. They're like, "I'm a man/woman, people accept me as such, and that's that. Being trans does not define my entire being". So I absolutely know where you were coming from, when you were upset at the need for pronoun circles potentially leading to you being misgendered

I don't know where the phrase ultimately came from, but I suppose one interpretation is that precisely because such a line is easily broken, it matters all the more (the abstract line, this is, not the one that commenter was drawing in their tweet!). It's also then not meaningless, but a line whose meaning almost entirely consists in its being conventionally upheld and subscribed to. And that's sort of the point with a a firm stance, right? It's hard to take a firm stance because it's easier to be unprincipled for various reasons.

The issue for me is that some people on the left assume that just adopting a tick list of prescribed liberal OR left views (left and liberal are really not the same) means that they don't have to think deeply about things and actually personally understand why those views matter which can make them defensive and attacking when challenged on their views as they haven't actually formed them themselves by a process of critical thinking so can't have a conversation about them.
