  • Joints in buildings are needed for many reasons. Separation joints can be to control expansion of the building or to separate the buildings to make it structurally uniform and regular.Regular buildings have a lot of performance advantage in the event of an earth quake.A carefully structurally schemed building will have a very less seismic demand and will be economic. It will also be performing better during earth quakes by avoiding torsional modes of vibration.
This video explains the different kind of separation joints and the IS code references for expansion joints.
The video also discuss the design of the expansion joint gap based on IS 1893 criteria based on the Response reduction factor to avoid pounding of structures which is a critical failure reason during earth quakes.
The video supplements a blog written in the civilera website (Our online platform for learning structural analysis of buildings. We also cover ETABS tutorials for temperature load analysis in the etabs courses.)
The link to the blog is www.civilera.com/post/4-reaso...
We Suggest you read the blog in addition to the video explaining the separation joint as both together makes it complete information.

Where to give expansion joint in regular shape plan of building like square, circle or something like central vista in delhi.....?

Its project specific. Need to decide based on the scheme requirement

Sir as you have said initially that we can have same substructure but different sulerstructure separated by expansion joint..then how can torsion be accommodated in irregular building during earthquake..
I mean is there any link bw the torsion in substructure and the expansion joint?

Yes if the reason for joint is expansion then there is no need to separate the footings.
Accomodating torsion - Design for the forces ignoring that it is in torsional mode. Thats what is meant by accomodating it.

@@proudcivilengineerspceacad1514 If your question is if 2 parts of an irregular structure can have common foundation then ans is yes. its ok. The inertial mass comes from the superstructure
