    It's heavily implied that Travis is a Vietnam veteran:
    1) He said he served in the USMC while the Vietnam War was ongoing.
    2) He wears a USMC jacket.
    3) His body is covered in scars.
    4) He has a Viet Cong flag in his apartment.
    5) He sleeps in a military surplus cot.
    6) He knows how to handle guns.
    7) His mohawk was common among the recon units in Vietnam like the LRRPs ("Lurps"), Green Berets, Navy SEALs, etc.
    _______________________________________________________
    It's basically a story of a guy who probably had anxiety issues his entire life who got traumatized/desensitized during the war plopped into an indifferent and corrupt big city and having all his issues bubble up in the worst possible way.

    "You talkin' to me?"
    Fun Fact: The scene with the Passenger in the back of the taxi telling Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) how he's going to kill his cheating wife with a .44 Magnum revolver is actually the director himself Martin Scorsese.
    Also, Robert De Niro worked fifteen hour days for a month driving cabs as preparation for this role. He also studied mental illness and during his off-time when filming "1900" (1976), visited a US Army base in Northern Italy and tape-recorded conversations with Midwestern soldiers so that he could pick up their accent.

    • @impishsongster333
      @impishsongster333 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Which is why Travis gave a false name & address. It's a fascinating scene, because they're both sizing each other up. The Secret Service agent is suspicious for good reason, Travis was displaying unusual behavior. But it's also the SS agent's job to be suspicious & observant. The SS definitely kept an eye on him after that interaction, which lead to scaring him off before he could assassinate, Palpatine. Which makes me wonder, if he hadnt had a conversation with the agent, and drawn his attention, could he have maybe been more under the radar, and been able to pull off the assassination attempt?
      Either way, it's a disturbing but layered, and brilliant film. A classic, for sure.

      Someone who was a student with her at Yale said she was protectively housed while she studied there. The bald headed friend is Peter Boyle from Everybody Loves Raymond who passed on the role of Popeye Doyle which won Gene Hackman an Oscar in The French Connection, Cybil Shephard was popular at the time for being a model and actress in the The Last Picture Show plus later did tv series. A young Jodie Foster from Freaky Friday and The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane was Oscar nominated. The murderous man in the back of the cab was the Director. The Pimp played in Pulp Fiction and Bad Lieutenant among other films(Harvey Keitel) Going to a “dirty movie” as a couple in the 1970s was seen as ok since many saw Deep Throat, The Devil in Miss Jones, Behind the Green Door among others plus they were advertised in newspapers.

    Something that I love about this movie is that it doesn't openly explain you nothing.... All the details are there, is up to the audience to pick them up (like Travis taking his date to an adult cinema because he's uncapable of normal social relationships, or the fact that he adds bourbon to his cereals)..... The movie trust in the audience intelligence to make their own minds and doesn't treat you like an idiot, and that's something I allways admire Scorsese for.......

      @TTM9691 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't just admire that about Scorsese.....I admire that about most 70s movies! Hard-boiled realism, ambiguous and multidimensional characters and stories, deep concepts and themes that went beyond "good guy/bad guy" stuff. The same year as "Taxi Driver" was "Network" and "All The President's Men", just for a start. Even "Rocky" - which was a reaction AGAINST the 70s movies scene - had multi-dimensional characters and went out of its way to avoid any type of good guy/bad guy simplicity.

    Of all the great Martin Scorcese films Taxi Driver is the one that needs to be studied and analyzed the most. Because there is so much to the film. The loneliness and tragic existence of the character of Travis Bickle. The fact that New York itself feels like a character in the film. The personal connection he tries and fails to make with Cybil Shepard and later Jodie Foster. The fact that his rage and resentment drive him to commit violence. This is less a film and more of a psychological study. De Niro’s performance is a stunning example of a man who is on the verge of an explosion. There are points where I actually forget he’s acting it is hands down the single best acting performance of Robert De Niro’s career.

  • @FireTiger941

    This movie is more relatable if you've felt the loneliness and isolation that Travis felt. The truly lonely person is one who is lonely even though he is surrounded by other people, like Travis in the big city. He cannot connect with anyone, he is inexperienced, and lacks social skills and acknowledging social cues.
    I believe that Travis was drafted into the Army, and once he was honorably discharged he didn't know what to do with his life, as is the case with many veterans. However, I feel that Travis may have experienced many horrors in Vietnam, and may be experiencing a form of PTSD and depression as well. He is trying so hard to live a normal life among everyone else, and have a relationship, but his trauma and lack of social skills is preventing him from assimilating back into "normal" life.
    He tries, and fails to form a connection and relationship with Betsy. He tries to have a normal life, and "love", but when that backfires, he chooses to resort back to what he knows, and he basically goes into "combat mode", wanting to exercise, eat right, purchase firearms, and become a hero and vigilante, because he feels like he has no control over anything, and wants to give himself some sense of purpose.
    It's a very sad film, and in a way reminds me of Rambo, though this is just another example of people reaching out for help, needing guidance, and someone to care for them. I think Travis had a death wish, just as John Rambo did. They both survived somehow, simply to continue existing in a nihilistic and indifference world.

    You see Travis in an even worse light when you realize that he's attracted to Iris and take in account how old she is.
    Also, Travis never becomes a hero, people mistake him for a hero. If he didn't kill the pimps he likely would've killed innocents, he was just heading down a road of explosive violence throughout the entire film, it didn't matter if it was criminals or not, it just so happened that he had the option of the pimps, due to the incident with Iris jumping in his cab by chance.
    The very last image of the film is meant to let you know that he's going to explode into violence again and it may not workout in as conveniently as it did this time. Travis is a man warped into a monster by self loneliness.

    Travis doesn't know how humans work, he's insanely introspective. There are many examples in the script where it's highlighted, when he says:" Someone should become a person like other people." For example.
    Also, when you said" it seems like he had no interest in sex..." again, in the script; regarding women "Anyone else would notice the asses, the boobs and faces, but not Travis, he notices the girl's hand on her boyfriend's shoulder..." He didn't like sex, he wanted connection.
