  • I am often asked the question: "Which is better a fixed blade broadhead or an expandable broadheaed?" In this video, I give my answer and suggestions after many years of using and testing both fixed blade broadheads and mechanical broadheads. I use the G5 montec 3 blade and I just use the same wet stone I use for sharpening my fillet knife since the blades are angled for it.

      I said the exact same thing. Broadheads just seem so much more economical, they’re cheaper overall, you can resharpen them, it has no moving parts to break. I was kinda iffy about moving parts on an arrow head, that’s just another thing that can break/deploy improperly, wounding an animal with what should have been a kill shot. Just Murphy’s law, that mechanical will fail and you’ll miss the biggest buck you ever take a shot at.

    Sean I'm so glad you mentioned it took you long to get over the doe. I lost my first deer (happened to be my first shot at a deer) 2 days ago and I'm absolutely in emotional shambles!! Glad to know I'm not alone. Also, pretty sure it was partly because of the mechanical broadhead. I've since switched to fixed-blade...

    Man, I have to tell you... when I get into something I do a TON of research. I’ve been shooting, reloading and building firearms and ammunition for many years but I am new into bow hunting and the archery discipline. With this I’ve learned you have to take everyone’s “advice” and “expertise” with a grain of salt. After hours and hours and hours of research and practice I’ve learned you are absolutely without a doubt the best ‘mentor’ (even if by video) that I’ve had thus far. You explain everything in great detail, and bring factual evidence from your experience reinforced with these videos to provide a great direction for somebody like me to follow and be successful. I appreciate this a lot and hope you ‘keep hammering’ as one of my other newly found admirations Cameron Hanes by way of Joe Rogan would say. Great job brother! God bless!

    First, great video. You've converted me to fixed blade broadheads. My experience has been with mechanical in a crossbow, but I'm hunting with compound this year and will use fixed-blade at your recommendation. Second, I keep hearing guys mention "value" in broadheads. I think it's funny that guys go out and spend $1,000 - $1,600 on a bow, hundreds on clothing and other equipment and then get caught up in buying the $34 broadhead over the $45 broadhead to save $11. That's funny!

      Hey David Greenapple,
      I saw that you mentioned that you shoot a crossbow. Just thought I'd throw this out there: a crossbow is a different animal than your regular compound bow. The biggest difference is today you're getting much higher velocities (I'm talking over 350 fps, even quite a bit higher than 400). Taking this into consideration, your accuracy is going to suffer a serious blow when using a fix blade. As far as a mechanical getting caught on bones goes... If you shoot the Rage heads that are designed for a crossbow you're going to go through bone no problem with the foot-pounds modern crossbows can deliver. A friend of mine shot a Rage Hypodermic straight into an Aspen tree by mistake, but was able to dig it out of the tree without the head suffering any damage. One more thing, the reason the mechanicals don't leave as good a blood trail as a fix blade is because most mechanicals at only two-bladed thus cutting a slit through the animal instead of a hole. Though this isn't the best for blood trailing, your cutting diameter is quite a lot bigger thus bringing the animal down quicker leading to as humane a kill as possible.
      Mind you, all this is for a crossbow as they are quite diddle rent from each your regular compound bow.
      Thanks,
      Kiernan

    When I took my boys to the Hunter Safety and the Bowhunter Safety classes here in Florida, the instructor talked about this issue and recommended people always use fixed blade broadheads. He did a demonstration where he would pick a kid from the class and have them try to push an arrow with each broadhead through a piece of leather, and they could easily push through with the fixed broadhead, but nobody could push through the expandable. Great video and GOD Bless!

    Great info. I use RamCats which are technically a fixed blade but fly like a mechanical. I shot a buck just a week ago through the front shoulder. The arrow hit the opposite shoulder and stopped but had penetrated the front shoulder. In my opinion the RamCats overcome the flight issues of a typical fixed blade but also overcome the penetration issues of the mechanical.

    Sean have you ever did the test on the different types of broad heads such as mechanical, verses 4 blade, 3 blade, & 2 blade. Secure a arrow in a vice then take and stretch a peace of deer hide onto something to where you can safely try to push each broad head through the hide. make sure that you leave at least 18 to 20 inches of arrow past the vice you have secured the arrow in. If you have never tried this you will not believe how hard it is to push a mechanical head through the hide, you will more than likely break or destroy the arrow while attempting this. The 4, & 3 blade heads are still pretty tough, but the 2 blade will push through very easily. A great example from a great hunter who harvested probably just as many large animals as anyone was the late Great Fred Bear. I do realize that the bear broad had a bleeder razor also if you wanted to use it, but in reality, it wasn't really necessary to use. I am almost 68 yrs. young and been hunting with a recurve since I was 8, & have experimented with many different types of broad heads through the years. But I always keep going back to the 2 blade, but the key as you pointed out is razor blade all the way to the tip, & sharp. I never messed with the mechanical broad heads because anything mechanical is subject to fail. And the animals we hunt deserve every bit of humane respect that we can give to them when we hunt them, & ultimately take their lives. Sorry to say in the sport I love many people are just interested in the kill, & not the hunt, & conservation which is our responsibility. Sorry I know I have written a book here but just wanted to thank you for you sharing your knowledge, & honesty with us all. Good Hunting, & MAY GOD RICHLY BLESS YOU& YOURS.

      Thanks for sharing. When I took my hunters safety course in the 1980s they showed us a video of that comparing razor blade to the tip and a broadhead with just a point on the tip not razor blade to the point. It would break the aluminum arrow with the point and pass right through with tremendous ease with the razor blade to the tip. It’s a good example.

    Great video - agree 100%. Early on in my bowhunting career I did use mechanicals for a while, mainly because I did not know enough about tuning my bow and previously had difficulty getting fixed blades to shoot properly. I have exclusively shot Magnus 4 blade stinger buzzcut fixed blade broadheads for years now, and have always recovered my animal with those.
    I simply do a a French tune, then do minor rest adjustments and my broadheads always fly true and bang on target out to distances of 70 yards and beyond. I think a lot of guys newer to archery just don’t know enough about tuning like me when I was younger, and they buy a broadhead that advertises “field point flight” thinking this will be easy. When they shoot those and they fly like crap, they switch to mechanicals and never really understand why those fixed blades didn’t fly straight. One thing I always tell the new guys is to learn those basic tuning techniques and you will have little issue with getting fixed blades heads to hit where your field tips do.
    One thing I was thinking about when you were talking about the lack of blood trails with rages - the old timer that owns the pro shop in my area was telling me about how he prefers multi-blade fixed heads because it is more difficult for the entry/exit wound to close or clot up, or get blocked with hair. However, I know with some of the high end two blade fixed heads, lack of blood isn’t an issue. Maybe it’s how thin the blades on rage are? Hard to say. But, even on excellent hits, like you said at times there isn’t much blood - depends on the angle, exit would, etc.
    Anyway, sorry for rambling. Again, great video.

    I enjoyed your video and its information today. Last year I tried a rage 2 blade with my crossbow. Spent a good bit of my time sighting in the rage, had a 1/4" group at 30 yards consistently. Got out in the woods couple days later, had a doe come in at 30+ yards, this was a straight on shot just behind the left shoulder blade, only one blade deployed on impact, spent half the day and part of that evening searching for that doe. Finally found her, was not really all that impressed with the impact damage of the rage. This years rolls around, for what ever reason I thought I would try the rage again thinking maybe it was my shooting that boogered up the shot. Had a small group of 4 spikes step out with one large doe in the fore front of them. She was a straight broadside shot just behind the left shoulder again, heard a loud slap sound, 5 deer scattered. I was certain I hit that deer, went out to where I thought the shot placement was, no blood and no bolt. Went searching in the woods were I thought she may have run, 200+ yards, still no blood. Come back to where I started, there on the ground was my bolt with the rage, same issue as last year, only one blade deployed, but their was no blood on the bolt or the flights at all. Im done with mechanical broadheads, im certain if I had used my G5 that I removed last night, I would be filling the freezer today. It was a different rage broadhead than what I used last year. Very heartbreaking to think I may have injured an animal that I love and respect so highly, but i think this one will be ok.

    Sean. This past season, I was able to harvest a doe . 30 yard shot using a G5 Striker. I thought I hit it a little back because I did not keep in mind the lag time for walking and arrow flight, and it was walking a pretty fast. When I came up to tracking it, the arrow went through and through and was absolutely blood dripping soaked. She went maybe another 30 yards and dropped where she stood. Very impressed with the striker, but I feel their blades are a one shot deal. Mine after I retrieved my arrow were kind bent. Tip was good though.

    I’ve made up my mind that I’m not using mechanical anymore, lost my first
    Bow kill using one, quit bleeding after about 40 yards and never found her, went through the shoulder blade so I’ll give it that much it did good there and exited just behind the other shoulder so it was a good double lung shot, she dropped on the ground right then and flopped around with the arrow sticking out of her on both sides so I got a good look at where I hit then she got up and took off and never found her, then the next weekend I shot a small buck just to truly break the ice with a bow and made the perfect heart shot and got both lungs, but didn’t leave a blood trail even though he had a 2 inch hole in his side and lungs and heart plus the broadhead deflected off a rib just like in one of your clips on this video but I didn’t have a lighted knock so it took me a while to find mine, plus it bent the blade so I’ll have to replace the blades to reuse it, needless to say I’ve had a bad experience both times I shot something with the 30-06 outdoors bloodbath so I won’t be using them anymore and probably won’t be using mechanical anymore, I’ll go get some
    Muzzy fixed blades or something, idk just yet

I finally lost a deer with one on a good shot and my buddy finally convinced me to try the hypodermics. They have tested well and not glanced off in tests and my buddy had purposefully blown through both shoulders of a few deer to test them. I love them now and I think the tip design is what really separates them from other expandables.

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As long as you feel confident that is about all that matters i guess. I've had many deer with no blood trails from Rage, and other people love them. You had a deer with a G5 that didn't give you much blood etc. I think you could fill a room with people who have shot a head you really believe in yet they didn't get much blood on a perfect shot. Great that your friend blew through both shoulders with an expandable, but what poundage and weight arrow? I'd still not recommend them to someone who shoots low draw weight and a light arrow like a youth...

      We both shoot about 70 pounds. I shoot about a 380 grain arrow and he shoots a 450 grain arrow. I get 301 fps out of my setup and for me it all comes down to accuracy and being able to hit the right spot. I completely agree though that for bows under 50 pounds cut on contact is the way to go. I never really liked the design of the Rage Extreme that you got there, but the Hypodermic has a much better designed tip with sharp edges all around and it's smaller.

    Two of my best bow kills were with montec 100 g shooting aluminum arrows ! Shooting at 290 ft/sec with a Mathews z light and black max cam !!! They really shot well ! I shoot rage 100 grain Hypodermics for xbow from my Mission dagger at 340 ft/sec !! Mission claims 350 ft/sec is optimal for accuracy out of a crossbow, that’s why their New Sub 1 shoots 350 ft/sec Anyway I’m jumping to a new 125 grain hypodermic for xbows !! No question about it, Shot selection regardless of equipment is everything !! I don’t shoot unless I’m taking a Heart shot period !! I would not that through the shoulder blade shot with a rifle, muzzle loader compound or cross bow !! Why because there is no reason to ??? You are more likely to get a better shot if you wait, if not, so be it !

    Great video Sean, I switch from rage last year for those very reasons. As I got older I found it more and more difficult to use 70lb draw weights. Even though I had great success with the exspandables, as my draw weights dropped i noticed and increase in the loss of penetration till about 2 years ago when I lost a Doe that I shouldn't have. Last years buck was a clean hit and pass through using the redhead blackouts. (BPS version of montecs) @55lbs draw.

    The only mechanical I’ve seen that I’d consider after my previous experience is the new NAP swingfire. It’s designed to “flex” around obstacles. I lost the only deer I’ve shot at with a bow. Cause I deflected off a limb I didn’t see and hit square in the shoulder and the arrow stopped like it hit a brick wall. I will be using the Magnus Black Hornets this year.

    Dear Sean,
    I'm new to bows and never hunted using a bow before.
    All hunters speaks about shooting the hurt, or lungs.
    Folllowing the videos i watched whether yours or others I m with below info.:
    1- today's bows are very accurate
    2- high draw weight
    3- using a narrow broad head long with two blades, 1/2 inch or less, assures accuracy, better penetration and deflection free.
    4- shooting range is less than 20 feet
    Based on above i believe a head shot with a cheap carbon steel narrow broadhead is more effective and humain.
    Please confirm or correct my understanding.
    Thank you for all the videos and valuable information.
    Regarda

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Each state has minimum requirements for draw weight for hunting. Usually it will be a minimum of 35 pounds for compounds and 40 pounds for a recurve or long bow. I prefer to hunt with about 65 pounds. The lower the draw weight the more important it is to have a fixed blade broadhead. A broadhead with a razor blade to the tip is best for penetration. The best place to shoot an animal is the heart or lungs NOT a head shot. Most people will not shoot more than 20 yards at an animal. God bless you.

    Sean, this is the first fixed/mechanical comparison accompanied by video examples in true hunting scenarios. Well done. I shoot fixed blade as well and believe you don't take chances when harvesting animals. Clean, quick (as possible) ethical kills are accomplished with well tuned gear and confidence in that gear. I question the complete reliability in mechanicals therefore I don't shoot them. Keep up the quality videos and merry Christmas.

    I could tell in the first minuet Sean didn't care for mechanical broad heads. And he explains why. like Sean I have used both I love and hate different things about them. A good thing to remember when shooting Mechanicals is shoot plenty of poundage. these broadheads can open up two or three times the size of conventional broad heads doing extrema damage. however with something that big it takes energy to push it threw an animal. And if you don't get an exit hole you don't get the large blood trail you want when tracking. It also helps to keep your shots lower on deer to get that instant blood trail. if you shoot them high lung the body has to fill with blood before it bleeds to the out side. And a deer may travel sixty or seventy yards before that happens. I love the accuracy and the Massive wound channels of some of these broad heads. I'm trying out a 150 grain three inch Swhacker this year and I will be shooting about 65 lbs.
    Conventional broad heads give great penetration and a well placed shot will take down big game. I highly recommend them for large Animals like Elk. I personally find most of them boring but effective. Remember practice with you're Broad head before going to the woods with it. Most Conventional broad heads need tuned. and I have seen three Heads out of the same pack that shot groups as far as six inches apart at thirty yards. But the things would penetrate a 2X4. Just really know how your head and how it shoots. Or you might be broken hearted with a big miss or a bad hit.

    Buddy of mine took down a big elk with a rage 2-blade... it was a ground shot though, and it was like turning on a faucet. He ran about 30 yards and tipped over, lights out.
    That said, I still prefer the fixed broadhead. One less thing to fail. The extra 1/2-1" of cut doesn't matter that much if you wait for good shots and place 'em.

    Great video, your opinions are supported with videos. I will have to disagree with the G5 Montec for a couple of reasons. They are stainless steel molded by the MIM method. Stainless steel is tough, but is easily dulled and will not penetrate as well as a broad head that stays sharp. I like the VPA, they are machined from a tool steel billet 50Rc, much stronger than the G5's and will retain an edge much better and are about the same price and have the best warranty in the business they are also offered in a lot more size and weight configurations! Montec does offer a CS model in 100 grains (carbon steel) but it is still molded rather than machined from a block of steel. It you want a harder steel broad head the Bishop and Iron Will are offered in 55 Rc tool steels but cost way more.

    Hi Sean We went back and forth a few years ago about Rage broadheads. I know you don’t know trust them. But just wanted to let you know that my son and I have killed 6 so far this year and 8 last year with Rage heads. That 80 or 90 something total. Still never had a problem with them opening prematurely. And have had incredible blood trails to every deer. Of course we have seen over half of them fall so didn’t need one. Still not sure what people are doing wrong when a rage won’t work for you.

    Good video, I feel the argument of fixed vs mechanical is very subjective because there are so many different forms and brands of each. I have used rage and every good shot has served me well, but I recently switched over to Grim reapers because of the success and impressive wound cavity’s of my fellow friends. They seem to be pretty durable and haven’t had an issue yet. Even if you don’t get a pass through they flex and continue cutting as the deer runs. I will add that blood trails are weird sometimes, I’ve shot deer with rifles and had minimal blood trails but yet the deer dies quickly and it was a good shot. I like fixed but hate tuning them. Anyways great video.

I shot though the spine of a big buck this year (just like the doe in this video..) great performance , you won't be disappointed .They sharpen easily on a stone or, I like to use 120 grit sander belt strip stapled to flat piece of board..just lay both sides of broadhead on paper while attached to arrow and push forward, then turn headto sand other sides..works great.

    Awesome video Sean! If you havnt already take a look at the Ramcat broad heads my personal favorite they penetrate amazingly! • @nealtressler1661
    @nealtressler1661 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Weeeellll... you do have a valid point when it comes to shoulder impacts. However, I would never , ever intentionally aim for a shoulder . So for me, that would be a misplaced arrow, and you have as much chance hitting too far back. That is where I believe the advantage of a mech comes in. Maybe it moves at the shot... maybe you hit a twig... whatever. I use Wasp, jackhammer or NAP 3 blade 1 1/2” or 1 3/4” cut.
    Now , if you’re talking crossbow, your advantage is WAY less. They shatter shoulder blades no matter what the broadhead. I’ve even seen one break a legbone and still penetrate the vitals.
    Look... I don’t think mechs are for everyone. But if you’re pushing 65 or 70 ftlbs, I think they are a better choice

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Know your equipment, if you know you can't shoot through a shoulder like it was butter then don't do it. If you do, though, and it gives you a more effective kill shot, then do it.
      As for your thoughts on the advantage of hitting too far back with a mechanical, well, I used to guide for a living and it was a shame how many guys thought that way and shot deer in bad spots and we never found them.

    I feel like mechanical broadheads can work great in certain shot angle situations but can be problematic in others. Plus there are multiple moving parts which adds one more possible thing to go wrong
    Fixed blades open up your options because of increased bone breaking ability and penetration. I like to plan for the worst case scenario in the woods which can be unpredictable at times, not the best scenario
    We are all responsible for making the most quick and ethical kill possible on any animal and any tactics or gear that increases those odds should be implemented

Seriously thanks for the wealth of information you’ve provided that has helped me pick up a bow after being so intimidated. Gun laws in NYC where I live are insane. They require a city investigator to background you and interview family/employers, neighbors for any rimfire or centerfire firearm. No passthrough still that 2 inch plus entry absolutely makes a fountain of blood gushing from it. Maybe my eyes aren't as good as yours or you have cameras to prove it but unless I find a deer I couldn't tell you whether I made a good shot or not. I can tell you where I think I hit it but not guarentee you anything. A rage into the lungs it ran 200 yards and no blood that's certainly a much different outcome than I've had with them.

      @@ThirdLawPair The rear deploy of something like a Rage takes place in such a way that if there is a bone, like a shoulder blade that is present when it opens, it brings the arrow to almost a complete hault. Most of the times when a hunter shoots a deer and we couldn't find it, it was because he was using an expandable (most often rage). Some outfitters will not even let their hunters use expandable. I agree I used a expandable only once and that one time was my last time, had a buck at 8 yards and hit bone with a rage broadhead and it stop about four inches in absolutely one of the junkiest weakest broadheads ever, I did get the buck because he happened to stop after he ran a long long way, and I had a chance for a second arrow after tracking where he went, I used the best broadheads I've ever used to dispatch him instantly at 65 yards he was facing me but with these broadheads I knew would absolutely without a doubt do the job, and completely blew through the chest and neck bone and continued on and come out his hind hip bone and then 7 to 8 inches into the ground afterwards, can't go wrong with these broadheads because I been using them for a long time and never lost a deer yet until I almost lost one using a junky weak pathetic rage, I'll never change to anything else other than these broadheads because in my opinion there the best, the broadheads I use is MAGNUS STINGERS 150 grain
