Wow Susan! Another powerful message! Although I have miles to go, I am beginning to hear that little Susan Garrett voice in my head when I have training challenges with my super dog Simon. The little voice is saying, " Stop and think..what would Susan Garrett do in a situation such as this?" You are making such a positive difference in my relationship with my dog as a result of your positive influence on my beliefs! Thank you again!

I've been frantically typing away on my phone whilst watching, make a list in anticipation of the setbacks we may have.
A while back I read a statement: 'Your dog isn't giving you a hard time, they're HAVING a hard time'. I'm going to write that on the first page of my journal to remind me to put empathy first. 😊

"Being 62. . .", I can't believe what people can say. If that previous agility competitor watched any of your podcasts about This!, he would be flabbergasted at how far she has come. And she has yet to reach her peak! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge and putting yourself out there.

Feel great after listening to you today. Got a plan, feeling better about my dog and her amazing possibilities. Feel less belittled by other dog walkers telling me I have a nasty dog - well, I have her on lead and you still let your dog come over, despite my warnings that she’s reactive on lead. None of that is my dogs fault. I have a wonderful dog - she’s from working border collie stock and it’s asking a lot for her not to react.
Ok - so am starting a journal - she actually did great today and recalled back nicely and ignored the other collie running to her - although I know she’d love to have played. Thanks xxx

I had a bad couple of weeks with my dog where I was very focussed on training and every 'mistake' was making me uncharacteristically frustrated (this was following one of those 'ditch the bowl' trainers, where every tiny thing became a situation where I would either reward or not reward). I soon realised that I was creating a relationship with my dog that was the polar opposite to one I envisioned when I finally got a dog of my own.
I'm so much more relaxed now I've accepted that some things are just quirks of my dogs personality, and other things that are more important are simply down to me to improve. I had a similar experience to Susan recently where someone offered their unsolicited opinion about my dog - that it was really bad that she wasn't listening to me and that her behaviour should be better by her age. Little did he know she was on edge after an encounter with an off-lead dog (which she handled amazingly), and that when she came to us as a 2 year old stray, all she knew was not to pee in the house. I wasn't disappointed with her 'not listening' to me - in fact I was incredibly proud of how far she's come.
Thanks Susan for touching on these elements of dog training - there is so much content out there about the 'how to', (which is great!), but not so much on the emotional toll it can take on you.

I've had a few problems health wise and I stopped training with all my dogs I have just realised my mistake and have just begun to pick up the training habit again. OMG how much change in my wild bunch after just a few sessions.
Two very different collie crosses. First is a big boy who and collie X kelpie, next one is collie cross jack Russell / chi. First small dog I've ever had. All I've done so far is introducing them to clicker training (clicker was my main training method). I can't believe how much they've enjoyed it. I think doing a journal will be great way for me to go.
PS I've been following you since seeing you with Buzz years ago on film as I'm in the UK. Thank you for being you.

I have an idea (and a request 😁) for a future podcast episode:
You talk about journaling a lot but I wouldn't know where to start! I have a million ideas that would overcomplicate things, and no clue at the same time 😅. Is there a template on your website that we could download? I would love to see examples of what your journaling looks like. I know you touched on that in this episode, but I would love a more in-depth breakdown of what journaling your dog training progress could or should look like. Loved this episode! ❤😊

Thank You for helping us get back on track…. especially with our program and journaling! Got sidetracked and consumed by other things and other people’s comments (whose training philosophies are very different or who blame the dog) and focus back on the relationship between my boy and me.
I can’t believe those comments from the other agility competitor 😮 Excellent responses Susan. 😊Age is just a number. I bet you could run circles around me and kick my butt in the gym…I’m 54. Lol Also, proof is in the eating of the pudding! I think your placements and wins speak for themselves!😂 (Perhaps there may be a bit of jealousy and gaslighting from that guy?)
Anyway, I love how you always underscore that at the end of the day it’s about relationships… with our dogs and with others. Which ones to invest in and how much to invest in each! To always spend our time and energy in building up rather tearing down! To go back to the roots of things. How important your beliefs influence your attitude and subsequently, have a trickle down affect, as explained in your belief loop diagram. Thanks again Susan! ❤ 😊

Thank you for sharing this. I think checking in with emotions sounds valuable. My main emotion is OVERWHELM and secondary to that is frustration. I love my puppy so much but things have been so difficult lately! It makes it hard to start training the problem behaviors and like you mentioned- sometimes I ignore it and “hope” it’ll go away. I have it in my mind now that he’s 8 months, that he’s getting too old for some of these behaviors and tell myself that it’ll be really difficult to reverse them. I need patience, he’s still a puppy! What I need is hope that things can improve with my training! 😅

I'd be interested in hearing how you worked through Tater's obsession with the golf carts. My guess is that you worked on Recaller games, managed the problem by not letting him off leash while the golf cards were out, maybe practiced some recalls away from the golf cards while he was on leash. But what criteria did you have in place too give you the confidence to take the leash off and give Tater the choice to not chase the golf cards?

I need a new plan. Staying curious, for me, is key. I have managed to control the attacks (luckily? Only towards me) which happen when he's overstimulated and isn't getting what he wants. The attacks only happen outside. After a few months with Dogs That, I had more information so I thought a behaviourist would have better advice. Maybe I'm not being open minded enough? I consulted the behaviourist/trainer/pet consultant, the one who interviewed me at the SPCA (who btw did not see any aggression issues or arthritis, nor did his precious owner.only I did). She said I won't be able to get any further in his training until I take my vets advice (four pain meds for arthritis including shots regularly). I would prefer to find some more natural alternatives first. Regardless, I still don't fully understand how his very specific triggers(over arousal)& attacking me are going to be greatly reduced with medication for arthritis. What I mean is, he's not "testy" or grumpy. The aggression happens in very specific situations. Thanks to Susan, I know what they are. Maybe he's not the dog for me? I have cartilage damage in my arms but I don't want to "control" and muscle my dog. Working on engagement has made a huge difference.

My challenge is that my six year old border collie attacks my nine year old border collie whenever there is a roof overhead. She’s fine outside. Weird, I know. I manage by keeping them separated indoors. I have no clue how to work on this without endangering the older dog. As a side note, it isn’t just my dog she will go after. She spent the night with a friend and attacked one of her dogs. Also, there is no apparent warning. No growl, no raised hackles, no warning look. The other dog can be on the other side of the room just lying there. I have no clue what to do besides management.

She started when she came in season for the first time. Until then she had been absolutely fine with other dogs. She was even put on Prozac for a while by her vet but that didn’t help at all. I have tried to find a behaviorist in my area without success.😢

Thank you Susan! Wise words. I’m struggling with my 22 month old border collie who has very high arousal toward other dogs. Smells of other dogs arouse him sometimes to a level that leaves him overaroused and unresponsive to me. This has been a very difficult training process for us, as removal of the trigger is not something easily controlled. It’s confusing because some days he’s mentally with me 100% and a perfect manifestation of our training… But in a 24 hour turnaround on temperament, he struggles with over arousal. Is this teenage hormones? He is an intact male, and when I neuter him, should I expect some of these mood swings and over arousal toward other dogs to minimize? Does it matter?! Lol I have so much compassion for all in the community 🩷🩷
