as MUCH as i loved Scott, i have to appreciate Johnson's tenacity, for, in this band, over40+ years he's sounded as if the next phrase will kill his voice...ROCK-ON!!

It's hilarious that early fans of "Acca Dacca" still consider Johnson as the substitute for Scott who died after only six years with the band.

@@alexandrorocca7142 BON SCOTT wrote all the lyrics on BIB and FTATR albums. The second inferior AC/DC is 1983 - 2020. When they tour for the last 40 YEARS they do 90% BON SCOTT songs. AC/DC owes everything to BON SCOTT!!! EVERYTHING!!!

Well Brian sounds like a human electric guitar. As if he's gargled with sulfuric acid. As much I like Bon Brian is much more distinctive and fits the gritty sound of AC/DC perfectly.

I think the vocal health thing is interesting. I don't think anyone can say that Brian Johnson has a good technique, a healthy technique and so on. But somehow he has managed to do this for 50 years, never cancelling because of vocal problems. It was the hearing that became an issue in the end.

    • @acethetitan
      @acethetitan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

His voice has definitely changed over the years, most noticeably after the Razors Edge album when it declined, but I think the main factors are age and smoking

    • @johnafirth

@@acethetitan i get your point but - almost all male vocalists have this "aging" at the age of 50+ , funny enough more than female singers , and you can listen to many bands and will notice exaclty that the voice is declining / changing

His voice has changed slightly... but its impressive how close it still is. Listen to The Boss if you wanna hear this type of singing totally gone to the pasture. I love Bruce, but he sounds about 1/16th as good as he used to. Brian can still rock baby!

As soon as the bell rang the crowd lost it(Sydney, Australia where I saw them) There is a reason why they have been so successful for all these years

For me Brian's voice is one of the most interesting out there. It has changed a lot throughout the years:
70's to early 80s: Lots of insanely high notes, sustanence and versatlity. This was Brian's prime, more than a match for a young Robert Plant. ex. Back in Black
mid 80s: Rugged and heavy, especially live. ex. Fly on the Wall
late 80s to early 90s: Less heavy, allowing for higher notes again, but he sounds brutal. Slightly different pronounciation and his screams start to sound restrained. ex. Thunderstruck
mid 90s: Probably his most rugged and brutal sound. No clearity at all, but he sounds more soulful and bluesy than ever. Less sustained notes and a barking delivery. ex. Ballbreaker
early 00's: His last 'screaming' years, sounding clearer again. As he ages he trades power for more soul and blues. Ex. Stiff Upper Lip
late 00's to mid '10s: Screams and shouts are mostly replaced with soulful, sometimes even clean singing, with more versatility. Downtuned guitars to accomodate his voice from now on. Ex. Black Ice and this video
early 20's: A rougher sound due to age and experience, gaining an edge he lost when he stopped his screams. ex. Realize
He's not focused on technical stuff but still has managed to pull through at all times and adapt, giving his all. His soul and authenticity are all that matter, as you said. AC/DC is blessed to have Brian Johnson!

Brian is amazing. Understand this is an hour into a live show, and he was close to 70! The fact that younger singers like A. Rose had to stick more with the Bon era to be able to tour with AC/DC says it all. Brian walks on stage like he’s walking into your living room after not seeing you for years.

I really like when Brian Johnson gets any attention, as I think he's a very underrated rock vocalist, but it kills me when people use performances way past his prime. Not that it isn't fair to do so. It's just that I'd love to hear what they would think of him from his Geordie years, or from his best performances with AC/DC on either Back in Black or For Those About to Rock. I've never seen any vocal coach react to the studio versions of Shoot to Thrill or another song that really showed off his range like Snowballed.

The funny thing about Brian Johnson is, he was a better singer in Geordie. When he joined AC/DC, he uses the same vocal style in every song. When he's singing a rip-roaring song like Shake a Leg or a ballad like Spellbound, he sings exactly the same. He used a lot more range and diversity of style in Geordie.

I love how on the album version they mess with your brain right from the start. The bells go on long enough for your brain to recognize the pattern and think of the bell as being on the “one” beat. Then the guitar comes in and it turns out the bell is on the second beat. Your brain recognized the perspective has shifted but at first you don’t know why.

Brain can be more technical but it just doesn’t fit their style of raw power and grit. You can hear his voice more when he was in Geordie before ACDC. But there is nothing better than when Brain just reaches down and belts it’s out with everything he has with the guitars turned up to 11. It just would t be the same if he stayed in control and kept it clean and technical. It’s important to fit the style of music and the end result you want. At the end of the day the point of music is to be pleasing to the ear and you can get that many ways with many formulas.

Beth, I watch a few vocal coaches on TH-cam and one thing is certain. Many of you have or are developing an appreciation for metal/hard rock, especially the classic bands. It's nice that you can appreciate and give kudos to singers that as you say aren't technically masterful but still deliver something that's true to them or the genre. AC/DC and Brian Johnson clearly didn't do it wrong, neither did Bon Scott.
Actually there's a thing, I don't recall (I may be wrong) seeing you reviewing a Bon Scott track, that would be interesting.

Great video Beth. I love how you acknowledge and appreciate both Brian Johnson and AC/DC for what and who they are - a Rock and Roll band. Not a technical singer, and compare that to the original recording quite a difference. Each to their own and what suits them. How do you maintain your vocal health when you might be both a smoker and a drinker and on the road for 18 months plus the natural decline due to the ageing process? Thinking Lemmy here too. Then there is Chris Cornell again not classically trained but naturally gifted - what the hell? OMG! Phrasing, breathing, rhythm and all the other stuff you’ve talked about. Even his voice changed as he got older. Besides being an avid listener of rock and roll music what I like very much is a great voice/vocalist. So I’m also a huge fan of both Kate Bush and PJ Harvey. They too both blow me away. 🤘

If AC/DC live with Brian, it HAS TO BE Donnington 1991. Everything else is meh compared to it.

Fun fact: When Brian was asked how he prepares for a show (warm up etc) his response was “I usually scream a bit and I’m ready to go!”🤣

What's great as well is his voice is completely unique and iconic. You know that voice when you hear it. And the music they play is perfect for this voice. These vocals would not work on a different style of music

I absolutely love Brian’s technique, if you actually look at his voice across the years even up to their most present day, Brian always seems to tone down the strain on his grittiness and rasp of his voice during live performances a tad, but like you said he doesn’t care and you can see it’s pure passion and enjoyment for his job. And even through doing this his voice on studio albums seems almost completely the identical in Power up as he did in back in black. Brian’s been doing this for over 40 years, so the fact he can maintain his voice that well even at 70 and still get to perform live is just pure awesomeness

Brian Johnson has sounded the same from every concert I've seen with him for 1986 to 2008. Im pretty sure he is not "being unhealthy with his voice".
It may not be "clean" or "classic" but it IS AUTHENTIC!
    JUST AS AC/DC IS!
Also, AC / DC sounds the closest to album in concert than any other band I've heard.
    This "unhealthy " , "destroyed" voice B.S. ...is.... B.S.

I was there , but that's normal at River Plate stadium 🏟️. Although it's like that for any band that plays there. Also " The Police " played there for their come back show. But if you want to see a bigger & crazier crowd , watch when ⚽ is played there. It's 10 times bigger. One album of ACDC that doesn't get it's due credit is " Flick Of The Switch " ⚡. That's a great album !!!
