jay was one of my favs in the 90s along with bbell and nick poderik. a couple months i moved back to ny from AZ i heard he just moved there and came out to a thursday night skate and i was so jealous. apparently he skated once, took a wild spill and thats the last i heard of him
Bro, I stumbled across this video coz I just found out that Chino XL passed away in July 2024 😔 which led me to look up Jays section from the Hoax 3, that was my intro to Chino rip ❤️ Jays section was one of my favourites too. I have a folder of tracks from a lot of the 90s vids, good memories, those vids introduced me to so many artists that I still listen to now 😁
I implore you to do something regarding the intro to VG7! That intro (that video!) had the perfect synergy of 'known' skaters as well as future stars, all somewhere around the same age group - so many fresh tricks were being explored and the editting was so on point, such a change from regular skate vids at that time. It just showcased the creative force that rollerblading had evolved into but was still early enough that nobody knew what was coming, it was pure talent, love and everyone was killing it - favourite skate vid of all time! No other skate vid compares.. prove me wrong!
Glad to see we shared the same questions regarding Jay's parents and home rules ;-) Also the missed top soul, definitely a trick I'll always remember. You're not crazy for doing this video, I actually wondered too about Jay as he was such a "role model" of my teenage years.
Thanks for this! I'd forgotten how much stuff he was in, and I'd say he was ahead of his time for a lot of those tricks. Nice trip down memory lane with the clips too👍🏽😊
I already did one for Champion Baumstimler for the print magazine years ago. He is a solicitor, or a lawyer now and has a family. He still lives in Texas and skates once in a while. I also interviewed John Starr for Platform recently. He works as a designer now.
Oh mah gah, you brought back too many memories with this one. Quest was the first skate video that I owned. Really connected with that kid in his bedroom because friends and I did the same kind of stuff in my room, but with a bed frame. Even though there are some heavy hitters on that tape, jd's style was one of my favorites. And I still want that 40oz shirt.
Man me too, I'm from Australia and a skate shop in Sydney, where we all had a community thru, hired out a cinema and did a premier of the Hoax 3 before it was available to buy, it was fkn epic, I even won a Fossil wristwatch thru an entry ticket lucky draw, I still have it somewhere lol, along with the hoax 3 on VHS in storage, among others 😁 I think the hoax 3, vg3 and Mr mooseknuckle are my most favourite and influential vids. They even created the soundtrack for my life to this day 👌
Do happen to rmbr the video that started and ended w sublimes pool shark, slow and fast versions.?? Around the time of nickel and dime and mr.mooseknuckle.. i know its a long shot bu its been driving me crazy trying to fig it out
Holy crap I've been racking my brain for years on who was the guy who did that "Topside Trainingwheel" at 10:04 and for some reason I confused Jay Dick with John Star?! in my head (don't ask me why 'cause I can't explain it) but then every time I saw footage of John Star I would think how he looked totally different. Anyway cheers for putting this up and unlocking a weird walk through memory lane for my poor old brain.👌
This brings back memories!! Im turning 40 this year and this is nostalgic! Blading in the 90s was 🔥🔥 i hated skate parks but street skating was my passion!! I owned poppys, oxygen argons and the finest blades imo roces majestic 12s!!!Jay dicks footage and ernie villarino in hoax 3 was the best part hoax! Keep up the good work
@@wheelsceneblading really? That's cool to know. I love seeing where people from the scene back in the day have ended up. It's a shame what happened to Charlie Lockyer recently, he was a major inspiration when I first started
@@wheelsceneblading yeah Jeff went to college, and focused on that. He would still take like 3 weeks at lake Owen (Woodward sister camp) every year till like 2005 or so. I'm sure he could still destroy a mini ramp though

Amazing video! I always have thoughts like this. It’s so crazy that some bladers achieve more in one year than most of us have in our entire lives, and then just quit and disappear without a trace.
Great video man! I always wondered what happened to him and now I know. EVERYONE - WEAR A HELMET! I've had head injuries from skating and snowboarding and they are no joke!
good path doing this and many more as long as its not too much work. I enjoyed it as It reminds me of being 13 and the early years mixed with the obvious "what happened to that guy" theme.
@@wheelsceneblading really keep doing them if you can but don't if you can't. Towards the end of me doing any anything I had high hopes of more article based projects including a broom Simi doc that was scary to think about given time/money and how far i could push a very young at the time friend.
Everything seems a lot faster these days ether people wax everything to the max or have a fast run up.. have grind wheels come bk in f or is four down still the norm?
Stale grabbing over a station wagon in a parking lot? It doesn’t get much better than that🙏. I remember a couple Jay Dick clips from back before video streaming, when you had to “right click, save target as” and wait for it to download. It was that topsoul hang over the edge, and then the first training wheel/wheelbarrow I’d ever seen (top acid except with a heel roll)
Guys, buy skate and do it again. It doesn’t have to be “back in the 90s”. I just bought skates again at 32. Bought hip and tailbone protectors, pads, helmet… Been doing it for a month and getting stronger and healthier than ever.
Has anyone else stopped skating got really unfit but wish they could skate again coz I tried but it's not like riding a bike I could just about grind a curb and a mini ramp but no rails or anything narly
Start off by just skating around, get the muscle memory back, then try and progress back to doing tricks. Too many people pick them up again after a decade or more and go straight back to trying tricks and wreck themselves. It's a gradual process.
I remember being so shocked when I saw that as a kid, little did I know skate videos would just get more and more graphic and the slams would get more brutal!

Great idea for a series, another few that spring to mind would be Champ, Jon Starr, Troy White, must be more though

Thanx , me n my boys were having this convo 20 yrs ago because it’s like he went on a tear through 1996 ,by 1998 we were asking where is JD 🧐?
This was the case for A LOT of skaters in that period. Jeff Laretto was everywhere and then suddenly he was nowhere.

Some people use grind wheels, some people skate flat setup. I think the main difference is frame technology has improved a lot in the last 20 years.
Lmao bro. We’re we supposed to understand what was said in that clip at 4:33 cuz I don’t hear anything but static. What’s the quote???
That’s not static. It’s the sound of him trampling through bushes.
@@wheelsceneblading whats the quote tho??
Where's Dustin Latimer? Cool idea. Thanks man!!!!!!!!
Arizona. He still skates once in a while.
I wonder with the escalator, if he just held wax at the rubber portion for a while before jumping on. Or just did it raw ✌🏼
I would imagine so. I have tried to skate an unwaxed escalator before and it didn't go well at all!
both those rails are currently skateable in san diego.
Loved Jay back in the day. I always wonder what Erik Burke and the Peld crew are up to these days. I loved those guys.
Eric Burke is a mural artist and has an Instagram full of his work. He does regular commissions in public spaces.

Nickel & dime was the first video I had
Jhon Julio was banging out fish brains everywhere what a legend
so hes pretty much eric bailey and chris farmer in one person.
Hahahaha
To be fair even heading toward 40, glow in the dark skate parts are still cool.
Before my time as I started around 2002. But I thought it was Joby Dick haha.
Quest for the Holy Rail was my bible !!
