I just want to reach out and say a big THANK YOU to everyone who managed to join in live, and a special thank you to all those of you who left a SUPERCHAT, (Julie apologises if she missed any of your names @JamisonS). I've just sat down and scrolled through all the comments, and am left feeling really humbled. I'm sorry I didn't manage to answer all of your questions, there were a LOT, but maybe we'll do another livestream in the future. All the best guys, cheers!!

We are going over for a wedding on November 1st and we are going to finally visit Warwick Castle whilst we are there. Can’t wait! We love your channel.

Excellent live stream Kevin, thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm a retired Leicestershire Police Officer and fully understand how the job can affect you, and the coping strategies we all used like "gallows humour", not to belittle the horrors, but to "process" them. The PTSD struck a chord. I think many who were on the thin blue line have suffered, still do suffer from flashbacks etc. It's only recently that I've been able to talk about some of the incidents I've dealt with during my service, you can't bury them for ever, at some point you have to revisit and put them to bed. Strangely, the one that particularly got to me didn’t involve any blood, gore or other physical horrors. I can still picture the scene vividly, like you, I was a community officer responsible for a semi rural beat, I went to house in one of my villages, knocked on the door and was greeted by an attractive young lady, all smiles, a toddler standing beside her, grinning up at me. There was a wonderful smell of dinner being prepared and I could see, through a doorway behind her, a baby in a low chair just inside the kitchen where this young lady had clearly been cooking. Such a picture of domestic bliss.
"Oh, hello", she said, "have you come to see my husband? He should be home any moment now".
I paused, just a few more seconds, I thought, before I destroy this woman's happy life by telling her that her husband won't be coming home again, he's been killed in a pile-up on the M1 motorway.
Not my fault, of course, but the guilt I felt as she fell apart still haunts me to this day. But that's progress, I couldn't even bear to think, let alone write about it until recently and that was nearly 30 years ago!
Keep up the good work Kevin, and early Happy Birthday wishes for your coming of age event. (70 is the new 40 isn’t it? That's my theory and I'm sticking with it!)

As a similar age to you , I am 62 , I also used to go as a kid to Nottingham castle, Ashby castle and Tutbury castle and loved medieval history. I used to treasure to bow and arrow you could buy at the statutes fun fairs Burton o. Trent and Nottingham, which my parents took us to in the 1960s and70s . A small flat bow with one arrow with a rubber sucker . They never lasted long before they snapped but imagined myself as a knight. Great times with my brothers .

Now that I've had a chance to sit down and watch your stream from yesterday, I've got a some questions for you.
    1) How much or to what degree is English History as it pertains to the life, the exploits, and the monarchs own perception of their importance in the overall history of the country.... how much were you taught or how much time was spent in school, on those particular subjects? In other words is it like what we would say in America was your monarchical English History 'shoved down your throats' as young English school children?
    2) Question and a Suggestion perhaps for a future video. When one hears or mentions the phrase, "The Field of the Cloth of Gold", do you think that was a reference to huge swaths of fabric that were brought to the festival for display during the events? OR,
Do you think instead it was probably more likely that a lot of the participants simply wore a lot of gold embellished outfits and gear or kit?
Lastly, (again) on the subject of "The Field of the Cloth of Gold", is it true that the ACTUAL location for the event has NEVER been found? If you had to guess.... where would you think the field was / us most likely located?
Thank you for your consideration of the above.

Kevin, if how you got your arrow wound were made as part of a movie, everyone would say it as all hyperbole.
I’ve been cut by knives, and you’re right: it’s a sting. A moment later the hurt hammers you. Even got bitten (by a human) in a fight.
I love the story about the kids buying you that Anglo-Saxon tang arrowhead. Very touching.
Like you, I learned to shoot with an American flat bow. Being an American, I figured it was de rigueur.
    Love the presentation!
    Cheers!

I was born in Warwickshire too Kev, just south of Stratford. My mum was from Acocks Green in Brum but moved to Burmington during the war! Always an archer and never been in a club. I was lucky. My dad was a tennent farmer and we had an old dairy surrounded by yew trees one of which supplied the wood for my first bow though I only had one arrow which cost me 2 weeks of errands and washing up and mowing the lawn, to earn. I nearly lost it first time out trying to shoot a hole in a cloud but eventually found it half way up the field but eventually lost it when shooting a tree when it promptly shattered, the arrow not the tree I’m now in my 70s. Still have a bow but want to have a crack at making medieval arrows the old way. I’ve also been to Robin Hoods major oak when I stayed in Sherwood Forest for a week.🇬🇧✡️✝️

Sir Kevin; I LOVE your history stories, and I suggest that everyone that appreciates the things that you bring to us should seriously consider becoming a Patreon member. I have no doubt that every donation makes a big difference to you. My few dollars a month are peanuts, but if you get enough peanuts perhaps you can make yourself a peanut butter sandwich for your next Crusade ....... Regardless, thanks for bringing us a little more about YOU this time. Even tho some of the questions you get in these livestreams are not of interest to me, some of them really are. Thanks!

Hej Matey. I dont know wether you remember our little chat about your accent and ancestry kind of? Anyway not important hehehe. But i too shoot my bow like you. I dont like the way they shoot in todays world and just one day picked up a bow and cocked it to one side and then it felt so natural to me to do this. So i think i was an archer many moons ago. I just point and shoot. Gasps i hear people cry but to me i pick a target draw my bow and loos the arrow. I think they call it instinctive shooting or something. But that is what i do. Loved the chat and i like all your vids with so much info and interesting in information and a pleasant voive to listen to. Keep making them matey. All the best.

Unfortunately I missed the live stream, but interested to here your start in archery story. Myself and a few local kids were very into bows and arrows and fortunately had some woods to play in (mid to late 60's). This was all stopped (in theory) when I was hit in the eye with an arrow (without sucker) and blinded. It never put me off though as have been an avid barebow and longbow archer for quite a few tears now!

First video I saw of Kev was "How to Shoot a Medieval Longbow" that was uploaded 16 years ago, apparently now on the 'history hilt' channel, whatever that is. That video stuck with me. From the moment I left school to the day I first shot a longbow many years later, and I tell you what I'll think of it in a couple years time when I put a grand down for my own yew bow.

Your own personal story is very interesting. I would have asked about your model making & how that got started.
I'm Danish & my father was a king's scout before WW2, his troop went on a camp in Germany & passed through a town where there was a big Nazi rally. So he saw Hitler & Goebbels drove by them in a big Mercedes so he saw them long before the Germans invaded Denmark. Both my parents had interesting wartime experiences, but seldom wanted to talk about it.

I shoot a 35# bearpaw European style longbow made from a single piece of Amazonian wood.
It is quite easy to shoot all day and I like the simplicity of it but I was thinking of getting an English longbow of about 45# because to me it makes sense to get a new bow only if it is a higher weight.
When I first started shooting I used a 25# American flatbow which was also easy at the time, I don't shoot a lot, usually only in the summer on fine warm days and when I first purchased the longbow it was quite tough to use but I eventually mastered it and have great fun battering my boss for hours.
Do you think moving up another 10 # will be more of a struggle or might it be easier as I have said the 35 pounder used to tire me out after a couple of hours and I would really feel the shoulder burn but now it is as easy as pie.
As you say shooting higher poundage is not necessary but if I get a new longbow I would rather it be a different weight.
I have my current bow 8 years now and it is in perfect order though it is a little out of shape from some humidity damage when I string it and pull on it the arrows are straight on target.
I always oiled it with linseed oil after every summer and keep it in a bag over the winter so the wood is not compromised by the damage.
I thought about 40# but I decided if I move up no point in doing it by micro waves.
You are the real robin hood kev but historically I still think that robin hood was from Nottingham and definitely not Robert De Bruce.
I have watched a lot of the documentaries from different sources and the one common denominator is that the name robin hood is likely an outlaw name used by or given to a lot of estranged bandits and warriors in that period.
So the tales of robin hood(s) may be quite many and varied but that there are probably a lot of them that lived in Nottingham in that era and had run ins with the sheriff and the king who didn't like his taxes being pillaged.
As a matter of fact I did the maths on king John's taxes for the war and they are about the same or slightly lower than todays average tax for working class people.

    • @davidobrien6643
      @davidobrien6643 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

Of course Robert De Bruce would have pillaged the king's gold as well but I dare say he lined his own war chest and the pockets of spies and such I doubt the poor saw much of it to be fair.
