The beat boxer extraordinaire’s name is Kevin Olusola. He has a channel on TH-cam where he does looping songs (where he beat boxes and plays the Cello). That’s actually how the other members of Pentatonix discovered him. Kevin is a fantastic musician. If you want to see his stuff, I would just search him on TH-cam! One of his better remixes is “Down”.

  • @caroleceres
    @caroleceres 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

LOL. I really laughed when you said that it may be 3 or 4 MJ songs! I thought to myself, “You are going to be blown away by the Pentatonix treatment!” 😄😄😄 Now you know (kinda) what to expect when PTX do an Evolution Of, song!
I’ve found, that even if I don’t know the back catalogue of the artist, PTX do it so seamlessly, it feels like one song and no matter HOW great the others are (and they’re Fantastic), Kevin - the singing beatboxer - is just outstanding! Pure unadulterated talent!
You’re becoming a Pentaholic. It doesn’t take long. You’re seeing their raw talent, they’ll be in the UK next year on tour - see if you can get a ticket (their postponed European leg of their 2020 World Tour), London and Manchester. You won’t be disappointed!
I truly enjoyed seeing your amazement! 🤗

You are the perfect illustration of what happens when most people experience Pentatonix (aka PTX). Smiles galore! Their goal is to put joy in their fans' lives. They usually do their "Evolution videos" in 4 complete takes. If they don't like one of them, they do a fifth take, but then they must pick one of them as the best choice.

  • @MelaniePoparad

Evolution of Music was what exposed many people to them the first time. it made the rounds on Facebook. and it blew up.
Their Bohemian Rapsody cover is (In my opinion) the pinnacle of their catalog. As though all their hard work went toward finally making this one song.
Their Sound of Silence is also some serious ear candy.

As others have said, the beatboxer is Kevin. You heard him sing a bit in the purely choral moments in "Hallelujah," but as soon as the beat starts, that's where he's needed, and he's phenomenal at it of course.
You have Mitch identified correctly. Now you can try for the others: The blond baritone is Scott. The woman is Kirstin (remember, I before R). The bearded bass singer is Avi (ah-vee). He left the group about 4 years ago (the only change of personnel they've had), and in more recent videos you'll see Matt, a different voice and personality but equally effective.

In 2016 the studio where they record these Evolutions verified that to that point they were one take and said that they couldn't recall any of them taking more than four tries (with two generally being them wanting to try different inflections/phrasing/etc.) It's possible post-2016 Evolutions are different, but for Music, Michael Jackson and Beyoncé that's the rule.

Evolutions of Music, Rhianna, Beyonce. Scott and Mitch did several on their Superfruit channel; L. Gaga and Milly Cyrus. They also did medleys of songs from the albums, Taylor Swift's 1969 and Beyonce's 2013 album Beyonce. Also a medley of songs from the TV show Empire. I never watched the show, but man, they certainly had good music.

At this point in their career they were getting together a minimum of 8 hours a day to practice. They lived near each other and worked constantly to perfect each song. They have been working nonstop except for a little time off during the pandemic for over 10 years and they still produced an album even with the break just no live concerts.

Amazing reaction! You should watch their cover of Gold next (it would be cool if you compare it to the original to see how well they did it with just their voices), Then I would recommend listening to their live Hallelujah Christmas special video (It is their live performance and since you already heard their studio version, you will be blown away how good they are live). Some others that I would recommend are: Imagine, Amazing Grace, Daft punk medley, New Rules x You got somebody, Marry did you know, Sound of Silence, Little Drummer Boy.... Just pick any song and you won't be disappointed!

  • @tor_sgith

The people at Endless Noise (which is the recording studio where they have recorded the various Evolution videos) said that they have it down to 2 or 3 takes once they sit down to actually do it, and that often these days the second or third is just to see if they can do it a little better.
There is clearly a lot of planning and arranging that goes in beforehand though!
I'm pretty sure I've heard either Scott or Ben Bram (the guy who arranges their stuff with them) say in an interview that they kind of completely finalise it all on the day just before they record, as it is all so complex and it needs for it to be fresh in their minds for them all to hit their parts correctly. So it is all planned out but then on the day they rehearse, rehearse, tweak, rehearse, tweak, and then just sit down and do it.

I do believe the evolution vids are done in one take and there’s a live performance (audience and all) of this one to prove it. What can I say about Kevin? There’s a lot more to him than you may guess and he will continue to surprise him as you get to know him better. Definitely more strings to his bow (literally). Loved your enthusiasm! PTX are known for their medleys and mashups. They are superb as arrangers, with the help of near-invisible "sixth member" Ben Bram, the arranger who has worked with them from the beginning. The group often puts together a rough arrangement on their own, with all of them contributing, and sends it off to Ben for polishing. Yes, Kevin can sing, but when he sings, there's no beat! (You saw how the rest of the group snapped their fingers here to make up for that.). You can see them do this live if you check out their Popspring 2016 concert set - 3 original songs and this, which is the third song in the set. It's a great little view into what their concerts are like. ETA: link to a compiled bunch of clips showing them arranging and recording. You get to see Ben Bram several times - he's the small man with the beard and glasses: th-cam.com/video/XbxPnbC9vnk/w-d-xo.html. (Bonus Kirstin in plaits and no makeup at one point - she looks about 13. So cute!)

It's weird that people would say you were Mitch-slapped in the Hallelujah-Video, as you are one of the few reactors who didn't react surprised by his voice, just generally pleased at all their beautiful voices. But I guess these viewers say that to every reactor who does Hallelujah - the eye sees what the mind expects.

It both is and isn't one take. They'll practice, then film, and even for simple performance videos they'll likely do multiple takes. For that type of video, they won't edit anything together, but they'll choose the best of the takes to use.
Mind you they tour and do live performances too, so there's certainly no doubt they can do it in one true take. But using the best single performance, unedited, is still smart (and expected).

I counted 26 songs in this one but I think you'd have to talk to someone in the group for an official count.

Their evolution of . . . Starts with the artist's early works & goes up to most recent. In their 'Evolution of Music', I think it starts with a 12th century Gregorian chant? Then it moves up to more recent times. Not sure about the Michael Jackson one. 4:22 This one is a one-take. No one is out of position after the edit on the video is made. So there is no editing on this one. Kevin is the beat boxer. His drum sets are always so good. 6:54 Kevin has an excellent tenor voice. Do any & all of PTX you want. Their 90's Dance Medley has no copyright blocking. Do the Evolution songs. Start with their earliest works like 'Sing'. Or just do the ones with the most views.

If you think that's amazing you have to see the daft punk medley and you haven't seen Pentatonix until you've seen Bohemian Rhapsody
