MF GHOST IS TRASH

- Sequels are hard. Apparently. MF GHOST is the sequel series to initial D but you wouldn't know that by looking at it. It has some of the same characters and references events from initial D and has eurobeat music, but make no mistake, this is just some weird perverted cartoon for maniacs that makes no sense at literally any point. MF GHOST has tricked an entire generation into eating slop with a smile on their face because they apparently forgot they can just watch initial D to get that "le nostalgia" like initial D still exists it didn't go anywhere, it's also better in literally every single way. At least first through third stage are better. Fourth is alright. Fifth and final are awful but still better I think. MF GHOST is the next in a long line of lazy sequels that forget what made the original magic in the first place and can barely stack up to something made with 1998 computers. I hate to be such a "the 90s were better" contrarian whiner especially since I was born in 2000, but when everything from the art style to the music and sound effects/design and animation and cinematography and composition and plot was better in a series from 25 years ago, I think I have the right to be disappointed. Instead of using the gifts of the future to go even further beyond and making even crazier stuff, we've used to become even lazier. Also this anime is really gross and perverted. It'll make you feel like a bad person if you watch it. And you probably are. You know an anime is awesome when you have to research Japanese age of consent and legal adulthood laws to understand if a major plot element is pure evil or not.

💯 percent... He needs character development.
Should have done a Tsuchiya/Freeway Speedway/Todo School-esque plotline that alternates between his junior professional career by day, and hitting the streets by night to continue honing and developing his skill.
Learning things from both to improve as a whole, applying different techniques. Also opens the door for a lot of potential drama and interesting plotlines.
Or honestly should done rallying. That would been fun story hell he even made taki have history with rallying.
Like there's so much story potential all he did is basically redo 4th stage onwards part intial d and made the protagonist a know it all d bag who is unlikeavle and just ham it in

As long as I turned my brain off and stopped being critical, I enjoyed it. As long as it focused on the cars, I was relatively happy. Then it's 30 second long shots of girls underwear and I'm uncomfortable again

if they remove those unnecessary scenes the anime is still be good
@@Yosh1az the original wasn't free of the creep factor either, I remember being very uncomfortable when Mako offered herself up in exchange for racing Takumi and its framed as misguided but comes off in practice as really sexist and demeaning as if the only thing the author could think that the only thing a girl could offer of value was her virginity. But back then it was easier to ignore. It seems the author got away from his editors because a lot of the worst parts of his writing are enhanced in the sequel. Creeping on girls, paper thin characters, the protagonist being the most specialist boy who ever was who gets all the girls with his incredible racing skill. But Takumi was more justified in how good he was so I could look past it. Kanata is just kinda explained away without any care as having the bestest memory in the whole world and that's how he's so fast
@@Demonetized_ the thing that really got me was the one character who only dates 17 year olds. Like in any other show he would be framed as an objectionable creep but he's framed here as almost valid in his own way or at least not condemned and if it gets a season 2 I can guarantee that he's gonna go after Kanata's sister girlfriend whatever she is, and it's gonna be a whole drama about how her kiss belongs to Kanata after he wins a race because the author really seems to hold that view of women as being things to possess or at least aspects of women can be possessed. Honestly I think he needs more female friends because his views on women are not healthy or normal. That or he should just stick to what he knows which is seemingly sports
its a shame that initial d fans of the past are still tourists. there was so much fan service in the previous anime.

I think the main reason why it doesn't work is because of the nonexistent rules regarding aerodynamics and downforce. In theory it would be insanely easy to abuse the "heavier cars get thicker tires" rule by just piling downforce on a car (naturally adding more weight) so one would get the benefits of increased aerodynamic AND mechanical grip. And with the handicaps levied on mid-engined and AWD cars as well, something like a C7 Corvette ZR1 or a Viper ACR would probably be the best option for abusing these regulations.
4:15 well it actually would shake out like that on an 88 km course which is about 40 ish minutes of racing, the larger more powerful cars would not even make it to the end of the race if they didn't race much "slower" than they could do at any one point. The heavier the car is, the more power you need to be able to accelerate, and the heavier and more powerful you car is the fatter your tyres need to be to be able to effectively slow down in braking, deal with lateral forces from inertia in corners and accelerate out of corners onto straights, but the catch is that tyre wear is massively exponential so adding tyres that are 25% fatter to a car which is 25% heavier will see tyres wear out much sooner under the same circumstances, adding fatter tyres to a car will increase the longevity of the tyres but not as much as it would if ur car is lighter, has less power and has skinnier tyres, thats what ryosuke wants people to figure out. At no point in the race until the kamaboko straight can any of the super heavy super powerful cars run at full speed, what goes through the mind of people who enter the race is "I need a powerful car to be able to even have a chance to set a good time with how much of the course is uphill and due to the course ending in a massive straight section, so they look for a car with lots of power, but any lightweight powerful car they look at, they cannot use because of the grip to weight rule which would force them onto very skinny tyres making it impossible to control their car without immediately burning through the tyres that cant handle that much power, so they then have to pick a car that is both powerful enough to accelerate uphill and heavy enough to give them tyres that are fat enough to use the power on the uphill, (which is why heavy and powerful but balanced European cars are so popular) but due to the cars weight they need to take it easy on the uphill so they dont ruin their rear tyres and when they go back downhill they still have to take it easy or else their weight will ruin their front tyres. In conclusion having more power means that at no point in the race till the kamaboko straight can you race at full speed, and so the key is to have less power but be lighter and have skinner tyres that will last longer throughout the race, youll be slower on the uphill but can attack it more aggressively which will save you some time back so the power difference isnt completely leaving you in the dust and then on the downhill you can make massive gains on the heavier cars that are still not going at full speed.

None of the cars are the same.
The new music is lame.

Hell yeah we need more battle stage recognition
@@edwardfletcher7790 Have to disagree on your point about the music here, chief
takumi was a highschooler who unknowingly built up a talent for racing.
mf ghost protag went to a racing school and was taught by takumi. there is no under dog there aside from the underpowered gt86.
even though the track in the first race took place roughly in the same area as parts of 5th stage (mainly the start area was the finish area in ryosukes race against an r32) the road is much wider.
what made initial Ds races more balanced was the roads are narrower and on a downhill section it meant having 300-350hp wasn't all that much more of a big deal when against a roughly 150hp ae86. The ae86 was lightweight, had a 50/50 weight distribution and was naturally aspirated allowing it to maintain its power for longer which made it capable of keeping up with the opponents cars which despite being more powerful were also heavier meaning they would have to brake earlier, have slower acceleration (especially if waiting for turbos to lag but having a 4wd setup or a "missfiring system" reduces the impact of it a bit).
mf ghosts race doesn't really have that. the closest balance between the gt86 and the other racers was the civic type r, lotus and alfa.
the whole point of initial d is that takumi's car sucks in every way, especially compared to his opponent's cars, but he was so good at driving it that his skill closed the gap.
@@oberonia7264the car didn’t suck in every way possible it was just very underpowered his dad didn’t care about power he put all his efforts in tuning the car to be as responsive as he needed it to be around corners I own one and it handles corners really well when it comes to canyon runs irl some of the quickest guys have the slowest cars
I mean that's the thing, the AE86 was the underdog punching above it's class and climbing the ranks to take the crown.
It's not a bad car by any means but the whole point was Takumi was actively learning and honing his skills even if he didn't like driving to begin with, meaning it was never about the gap between 350hp bee hive vs finely tuned 150hp 86 but rather the driver's themselves and what they were capable of.
Another thing to note is that Takumi was mentored by both his father and Ryosuke in a way where most of the time he wasn't told exactly what to do, but rather some vague information to take in and formulate on his own path, they layed the groundwork while Takumi built the foundation via his skilset and knowledge.
In MFG there just isn't any character development to be had, Kanata just immediately knows everything because Takumi was his mentor thus he's just perfect already.
MFG would arguably be better if it took place during Kanata's schooling under Takumi's wing, but instead Shigeno skipped over that just so he could have Takumi's whereabouts be a whole mystery sort of thing until the big reveal at Kanata's final race where Takumi pops up out of no where and is actually his last opponent to beat.
Unfortunately Shigeno is trying to catch lightning in a bottle twice but this time without what made Initial D so special nor the advice or assistance of Keichi Tsushiya.
I feel like Shuichi Shigeno is probably justifying the whole Ren thing with something like "well at this point of my life I'm just a dirty old man, it do be like dat bro"
guess youve never heard of Picture books from talentless hacks like AKB48.
One thing about MF Ghost that always left me scratching my head was the character Kouki Sawatari, Why does he have to have a "seventeen-year-old complex"? What exactly does that bring to the story? The writer could have accomplished the same thing by making him obsessed with eighteen-year-olds and it would still have a similar vibe, he's obsessed with their age not them per se. Just feels like another opportunity for him to draw scantily clad underage girls, but who knows I purposefully haven't read the manga.
The point of it is that he is a creep although that is rendered null when there are others as well yet nobody bats an eye.
The fact that you had the point out what a one year difference would've made I think is the point. He wanted him to be a creep, and he's obviously going to get into shenanigans with the main 17 year old girl at some point. If he just liked 18 year-olds it'd be less significant. I'm not saying it's good writing, it's absolutely terrible, but the point was to make the dude a giant creep.
@@ryswick1064 The thing is, he never does get into anything with her, they barely had any contact at all and the manga is not far from the end

I havnt read the manga but it's obvious the main reason why is so he becomes interested in Ren.
Exactly. The fact that he was able to affect all the participants by just showing up and racing was really cool. But Shigeno really had to do it. Also I wish they'd remove the Angels. Or at least make them just a minor entity in the background (And I don't mean turn them all into minors)

are u fucking 12???? why does seeing girls in what is effectively a bikini making you uncomfortable?, attractive girls in revealing clothes has been a thing to keep viewers attention when there currently isnt any action in sports for such a long time, and especially since initial d was inspired by Best Motoring/Hot Version which btw have attractive women in bikinis all the time before and after races when people are talking... u are so dumb
When ppl haven't realized how BAD the Manga goes after the Anime end.
While Initial D itself also guilty of this "power armor hyper turbo unbeatable AE86 Trueno", keep in mind that Initial D still had a technical advisor from our very legendary Drift King himself (Tsuchiya Keiichi) & some aspect on it DOES make sense in real motorsport
Unlike MotherF*ckin' Ghost that didn't had any technical advisors or whatsoever, so "Cheap sh!tboxes beating every single European Exotic Sports Car" is even more ludicrous with "Powerful car use Economic Tires & Slower car use Track Tires" bullsh!ttery
It's not even "more power = worse tires" (the tire thing was an issue in the 90s and Initial D since road car tires then didn't have enough grip to support the higher on average power and torque numbers of modern sports cars), it's "heavier cars get wider and thicker tires". I already pointed out how abusable this would be thanks to aerodynamics and downforce additions.
Take an already balanced car in present time (and ideally weighing between 1300-1650 kg, something like a 488 or Corvette Z06) and just add downforce to it (which would usually add more weight to the car). You then get access to thicker tires than you would otherwise, while reaping the benefits of increased mechanical AND aerodynamic grip.
I honestly didn’t feel too bored of Initial D even towards the end. The anime seem to be also about learning along with Takami, so as he was getting better, he was also learning more advanced techniques, strategies, tactics, and the psychology of himself and his opponents (and how to use all of that to win). I was hoping for Takami to end up mentoring Shinji, as teaching is another set of lessons for the teacher as well.
4th stage was a lot more car focused. I can see why people don't like it. 1st-3rd stage had interesting narratives. 4th-final stage were more focused on giving explanations on car mechanics/physics and a bit of race theory as well. 5th and final still sucked though imo
I honestly like all 6 stages, although the last 2 stages were weak but I strike them regardless due to the great ideas and well handled plot points that balanced out the mid races and street racers (with a few exceptions)
Mf ghost sucks.
@@stilesstratton9566 finally someone I can agree with 😅
In all honesty, I think the racing aspect of MF Ghost would have more emotional impact if the story was like this:
The GT86 Kanata drives use to belong to his late Father, and Kanata's dad use to hate the idea that racing has turned into a way for rich, spoiled kids to show off a bunch of flashy cars and expensive equipment they have because they were born into a rich family. Before Kanata's dad died, he wanted to enter MF Ghost in his GT86 in order to prove that racing shouldn't be about how much money you have or what car you drive, but about how much you're willing to push yourself to be the fastest driver you can be. After his father died, Kanata decided to do what his dad wanted to, and entered MF Ghost in his freshly restored GT86 with the intention of not only making it into the top 15, but winning the entire championship in his father's memory. He manages to beat some of the other drivers and place decently high in the Divine Fifteen, not because he's some sort of racing god with as much plot armor as he can carry, but because he's willing to take risks and push himself to his limits, simply to prove that his father is right about what racing should be.
Mfg needs to have that spirit of competition. With a viewer supposedly at 30 million, you would think professional teams would join. And also what stupid fucking rule. Nothing is stopping Kanata from putting a Porsche engine into the 86. Nothing is stopping the driver, or the non existent team, to exploit the rule. Instead of using a slow ass GT86 to compete with Huracan, why not opt for a TVR? Kanata is a brit. Sure as hell he would know about TVR
Also, why is nobody using widebody kits and big wang?? Keisuke in his demo video is still using the same RE Amemiya RX7 body kit
I had to turn off my brain because the only interesting part is when Spitfire comes on
The thing is, even if he wanted to stick with the Toyota stable, nothing really is stopping him from throwing in the 503E with a time attack wing and going ham like Rod Millen

Probably too much erotic content for today. But seeing that one magical girl manga get a popular anime, it might work.
Over Rev is far better than Initial D in my opinion and I've felt so sad to see that such a deep and amazing developing story didn't had not even a OVA, it just goes to show that people doesn't care about developing stories that are well written, they prefer to just go for popular stuff (in this case Eurobeat and cars) to just satisfy brain dead people who doesn't care if the story is good or not
@tobiasrenner3498 Eurobeat isn't even a popular form of music. It's added just to bring in the initial d fans. I do think it goes well with racing, but the fact is that it's mostly there to nostalgia bait the fans.
@@ieurobeatkids9378 my bad I didn't meant to say popular
The series somehow managed to make me forget that the biggest issue with the MFG Angels was that a LITERAL 17 YEAR OLD IS A MEMBER just with how often they showed up to interrupt the action. Thats one of my biggest gripes with MF Ghost, the pacing is just absolutely horrendous. ESPECIALLY when you go in knowing theres only 12 episodes, it makes you realize just how much time is wasted on unimportant shit like the Angels
Also gotta mention Beckenbauer who's entire personality so far has been 'Keisuke but he's German.... and extremely racist as well-'
The fact that her parents are shown to be okay with essentially pimping out their daughter onto live television and acting like it's a genuine career is also baffling
Yeah... they're pushing the boundaries of the whole japan 16 aoc thing... but I never really paid much attention to this aspect, but I loved that they had eurobeat!!!
Age of consent matters a lot less than age of adulthood. The aoc in alot of American states is also 16, but you still have to be 18 to work in porn or any sort of sexual job and it's the same rules in Japan. Or at least it is now, before april 2022 you had to be 20 in Japan to do that type of stuff or 18-19 with parental permission which is insane on its own that anyone ever got that permission.

That and the obnoxious shoutcasting from the announcers would take me out of it everytime. I can't imagine DBZ would be as popular if the FIND OUT NEXT TIME guy also narrated entire fight scenes. My only real hope for MF Ghost is that it's success leads to a revival of other racing anime. Like a continuation of Wangan Midnight or even an adaption of Over-Rev. But yeah as a story it's really boring, Kanata is just a carbon copy of Takumi without any of his character progress. And I get that Initial D was famous for the ae86 but it didn't mean the author had to use an 86 for the sequel series. Wangan Midnight's sequel series had it's main character drive an RX-7, for example.
1:03 if you go frame by frame you can see the AE86 clipping its rear through the guard rail.

LMAOOOOO
thats lore. takumi really is that good of a driver.
That's just the FUJIWARA ZONE.
I almost feel like MF Ghost was Shingeno's way of saying FU to the Initial D fan base. The main protagonist is a Gary Stu who is a pretty boy, and a racing prodigy. Takumi somehow went from being a downhill ace, to somehow deciding to go to Europe and race in WRC and getting into a life altering accident causing him to become a racing instructor. Then, there is the Ren MFG Angel subplot that is a half assed cringe attempt at a romance after many fans got irritated that the relationships of all the Initial D drivers failed.
It feels like Shingeno has pour salt on the wound and splashed lime juice on it. He could have made a series focusing on Bunta becoming a legend. He could have even done a series starring Mako. He could have even done MF Ghost where Takumi is an instructor guiding his student to success at MFG. I just cannot believe Takumi would leave Japan and not stay with the Takahashi brothers.
Instead we get a Gary Stu.
a gary stu and mary sue what a great combo
I feel like what mf ghost misses is that sheer amount of power difference that cars have. The cars that takumi raced against were somewhat believable because of the fact that cars in initial D had not that much power in them. Most cars were 200 to 300hp and were massively weight disadvantaged and takumi had a lot of experience on his car while his competitors did not. So even with a 70 to 100 hp disadvantage its somewhat realistic that he was able to keep up on a downhill mountain. Then there was the weight advantage that he had and the fact that suspension and tires in his car were tuned by a pro street racer. After he blew up the motor his 86 was basically a formula Atlantic car which was more or less the same as the competition.
Not only it is harder to believe that someone can take a gr86 and beat cars with 400 to 600 hp its also hard to believe that he can do it against a bunch of pros because he is takumi’s student. Honestly it would have been much better if we got to know about bunta more. Or saw takumi do other disciplines. Project D kinda cop out and didn’t go legit and that was pretty bummer.
The power difference is balanced with tire size. At least, that's what the writers tell us. Having a thousand horsepower doesnt matter if you cant use it
Agree, after the 86 overtook the 4C and Exige S, it’s still quite understandable, but then our boi decided to overtake an LC500 and raced a fking Carrera GTS like what. I’ve seen somewhere that the 86 later beats the R8, GTR and 488 too with just a spoiler and a carbon hood, idk how powerful the engine is at that point but that’s a bit too much, realistically it should have the Pandem V3 body kit with a turbo engine to do that. The anime itself (beside the angel outfit) is pretty good, great visual and stuffs, but I think they need to play Assetto Corsa before making it.
So Initial D with an actual Gary Stue
I still can't believe that the author killed Takumi off-screen. I'm sure that epic 200hp GT86 is going to obliterate all the supercars. The opponents were probably shaking in their boots when all 200hp were unleashed on the race track and the car reached 60 miles in 7 seconds. There's no way the manga isn't a huge ad for Toyota and nothing can change my mind.

I agree with mostly everything but I feel like you overlooked the absolute character assassination that the original Initial D crew (beside Ryosuke) went through. While it is revealed (much, MUCH later) that Takumi and Keisuke were relatively "successful" racing drivers (Keisuke won like 3 Super GT titles while Takumi was an ok Rallye driver in the UK), not only do you never see them race at their professional peak, you're just left with Keisuke being a real estate tycoon (which feels completely out of place by the way, Keisuke was hotheaded and a shithead so it's hard to believe being the best circuit racer in Japan humbled him when the last time you see him he's drunk and stating he'll be a professional racer) and Takumi retired from racing after a near-death crash. I'm fine with Shingeno not really wanting to make the show about the old Initial D cast and more about these new "original" characters, but making the old cast occasionally show up and going "haha look, Itsuki is still a loser and Iketani is still a virgin.". It makes you wonder if MF Ghost was made in good faith and not hastily done to promote the GT86 (which is funny because the GR86 came out right before the show started airing)

Ryosuke only wants his theories applied and passed on to the racers; everything else is handled by Fumihiro. SO yes; questionable management choices just to bump up ratings and to make MFG globally relevant: with horny.
Also, why is Ren 17? To set up Koki Sawatari's character and his disturbing Seventeen complex. The creepiest street genius known to man driving the Alpine.
Well my immediate assumption was that kouki would somehow find out she's actually 17 and it would cause drama but it doesn't. Kanata and Ren start dating and aiba isn't interested in her after finding out her age so he dates that 27 year old angel. So Kouki Just has that obcession for no story reason at all it seems.
Forced myself to watch MF Ghost of course because I found out there is Initial D cameos and found out about that Rx-7 making an appearance. I’m so glad I found this video because throughout watching the 12 episodes this is legit how I felt…

MFG broke it for me when a GT86 sonehow out braked a 911.
Nah the logic was 86 had tyres left out for one final break. While the carerra gts already had used all its tyres. Ask anyone , the tyres are what matters in breaking ad the traction point is that. The tyres.
@Sailed_away Thats a bad excuse. The 911s layout, brakes so well because of its weight transfer and where it is. The car can transfer more weight on the front than any other platform. The race did a poor job of even setting up worn tires. A 911 on corded tires can probably still out brake an 86 on almost corded tires.

Dude, I really appreciate you pointing out how creepy Shigeno is in the Initial D iceberg and especially in MF Ghost. I couldn't even finish MFG because it was really uncomfortable seeing Ren sexualized like that. I also couldn't put my finger on what was bothering me about the races, but yeah, you phrased it perfectly; they're not exciting at all. You're doing great work, man. Keep it up!
watching mf ghost just made me want to rewatch initial d. it was actually so unengaging that i cant even remember any of the soundtrack, opening, eurobeat or otherwise
I remember most of the eurobeat cuz i listen to them all the time before MF Ghost.
Same…
The moment kouki was introduced i almost killed myself its almost like Shigeno is just inserting his fetishes into the manga
Me and my friends lost it as soon as that character appeared. I stopped what that episode was over.
I wonder why they didn't just make a prequel that shows Bunta's youth, how he got the AE86 and gets to know Takumi's mother until the founding of the tofu shop and how Takumi grows up. That would have been so much better and more meaningful. Who cares about any shitty super sports cars in motherfuqqing ghost.
Hell, initial ds cars for the most part are STILL affordable in the sense that the average person can own them without having to be a rich guy, with the exception of the gtrs, supra mk4 and nsx, unlike in mfg where 90% of the cars are 6 figures or more
Not fucking true at all. The only car thats still even REASONABLY affordable is the MR-2.
AE86 Trueno is over 3 million yen.
Nissan Skyline GT-R Spec Nur (R34) is well over 10 million.
GC8s cost anywhere from 2.5 million and up.
Honda NSX's are fucking supercars and expensive as all hell.
Toyota Supras (from that era) are going up in price.
Mazda FD type R and Type RS' run at a MINIMUM 3.5 million yen. Good ones go for over 5.5.
S2000's go for over 2.5 million
Lan Evos (Evo 3, 4, 7s mainly) are so popular that their prices are going up (I dont like Evos so i havent looked into their prices recently)
And this is all off Used japanese car websites in the past week that I have seen. You are fucking braindead if you think they are affordable.

When I first started watching a couple episodes of the subbed version of initial d, I really got hooked into how the music made the series feel more alive, like what the video explained, the camera angles focusing on the car made it look like the car car was speeding over 200km/h. Now reacting to mfg, no proper story, animation looks alright but the camera angles doesn’t make it exciting and the music.. MAN it sucked. What even made the reputation for the show decrease was the UNDERAGE GIRLS, like seriously, that puts a new definition of disgusting on a lower level. Why does stuff like this makes a good expression on my people who like the show??? That is all
Apart from like 3 good eurobeat songs, MF Ghost somehow managed to fail my already low expectations. I didn't think it could get worse than Fifth Stage, but somehow... They pulled it off.
The fact that Japan literally eat this shit up is beyond me... I guess the popularity of the arcade machines, eurobeat, etc, in Japan mean plenty don't care about realism.
The fact that Toyota agreed to put their badging in this anime is also baffling to me. Thank god Keiichi made sure not to touch the manga with a ten foot pole. I can only imagine how much better MFG could've been if Shuichi Shigeno had gotten Keiichi Tsuchiya to be his technical advisor like with Initial D.
initial d is not realistic lol, a mostly stock 86 will never beat a tuned r32

"You can put the camera anywhere" is my favorite talking point about Initial D. Theres some shots that are straight up impossible on anything but a blockbuster Hollywood budget... Or a cartoon.
all i got from this video is that he really likes Ted
Before the anime, I heard people weren't too happy about the manga, saying it was not even close to initial d. I tried watching the first 2 episodes and dropped it just waiting to hear from others if it gets better, but it sounds like it's just poopy episodes. Nah, I'm good with rewatching initial d, and the sentai ovas. At least the name is ironic, just a ghost of its predecessor.
I dropped this show after seeing that one character who ONLY dates 17 yr olds. Idgaf that he has an obsession w/ the number 17, that's gross. It's gross when Leonardo DiCaprio does it w/ 24 yrs olds, and it's even more gross here.
Edit: Holy Shit I forgot about Ren being an MFG Angel
The James Rolfe 'I will not be watching' went severely underrated
As much as I love the idea of Initial R, I don't blame the mangaka for phoning it in for the money. Get that bag, king.
I love initial D because they didn't straight up give the main character plot armor just because. They atleast showed that the AE86 struggles keeping up and they give plots/different techniques to "cheat" or find a way for the 86 to beat the cars.
I can only count a handful of moments from this show that I liked (maybe fewer). Meanwhile, I can make an entire 70 + video playlist of moments from Initial D that I loved.
For me, this is the most 4-5/10 show I've seen thus far.
Also Jungle Fire featuring MOTSU is a great OP wasted on this show.
I remember years ago trying the manga for the first time and being blown away with how none of the original spark of initial d could be found within the series.
The mfg angels is what turned me off with the anime. I saw mf ghost more inclined on fan service and romance rather show the exciting race scenes (still kinda bland to me)
you know damn well zombie Takumi didn't have a single ounce of emotion in his bones until Shingo bumped into him
Just completely not true at all. Please re-watch the show and pay attention this time.
@@GhoulCityOnlineCan say the same to you. Takumi displayed way less emotions in entire 1st stage then Kanata did in the 1st 3 episodes.
I mean the flashback of him punching rapey mcrape doesn’t count, he had one (barely) race against three nobodies who made fun of Itsuki where he got upset for 5 seconds before reverting back to neutral and mentally saying Itsuki’s car was ass, outside of people telling him to race Nakazato and him getting big grumpy Takumi is on cruise control 95% of his daily fucking life he’s a zombie. I love the dood but for shits sake he didn’t even wanna race Nakazato until Yuichi used (SUBTLE) reverse psychology on him. He was on autopilot until Shingo came along.
Yeah I guess Takumi really is an emotionless zombie if you arbitrarily decide what does and doesn't count as character building (literally for no reason, why would that not count???) and over simplify events to warp to your OBJECTIVELY incorrect account of how the original series was.
Let me start by saying this video was a great watch start to finish, the editing and humor were amazing. I watched Mf Ghost and "enjoyed" it, I didnt really like it but I didn't feel like rewatching Intial D so I just took what I could get. This video let me understand why I disliked it instead of the just vague feeling of not liking it I had before, overall great video worth every second of my time
After I saw this video you made me realise that I would rather had a real continuation of Initial D like you mentioned Takumi going pro in rally while racing against veterans than MF Ghost...
Finally. The algorithm caught onto my thoughts about this show. This show felt like an attempt to use nostalgia from Initial D and not a show about Kanata Katagiri or anyone in the show for that matter. In my opinion, the closest this show got to being what it aimed for was the death zone sequence during the race. There was some hype and mystery for his first overtake, but after it lost that mystery and became uninteresting. It can be good, but it would require EXTREMELY heavy reworking of kanata, the side stories, and overall direction.
It's not the side stories that need to be reworked. It's the whole plot and the characters.
The main plot is Kanata finding his dad and falling in love with a girl on the way. The racing doesn't progress the plot. It's there to keep the ID fans entertained. Find some way to weave them into eachother and the plot will be a bit better.
Next, a more natural romance. Have Kanata not like japan at first, and Ren feel offput by a fucking grown man suddenly living in her house. Ren falls immediately and becomes a Kanata simp just because he's a "nice guy". And remmeber that bro's falling in love with a minor.
Kanata is a grown man but he is also only 19 so their relationship as a concept isn't a problem
I got a better idea.
How about having REN be the lead and the struggle being that she fears for his life as he is racing due to it being a highly dangerous sport, but eventually finding the same love of the sport he has?!
Basically one pound Gospel with sports cars!
You get over the natural danger of the sport, show that Kanata actually has a love for what he does and explain WHY (Have his dad be an actual racer...) and give Ren something other than being fan service and actually put a purpose on that relationship.
Shi-geh-no. Say it with me. Shi-geh-noh
I'll learn to say his name correctly when he learns what the legal age of adulthood in Japan is.
@@GhoulCityOnline In another life then, maybe
Honestly I don't get why people like MF Ghost. The entire concept behind it is BEYOND stupid, it's actually counterproductive to what it supposed to be. Then there's the damned plot... Fuck me sideways, it's so stupid. I swear MF Ghost falls apart the moment someone engages their brain.
When I finished this video in my living room I thought to myself that it was about time I get back to work so I got up, went in my garage and immediately before me was my modified 90's japanese sport car on jackstands patiently waiting for me to get back wrenching. And just then it hit me how much Initial D had impacted my life. I knew it already of course but it just HIT ME.
Anyway I really tried to get into MFG when the manga came out but just found it so boring I dropped it. When the anime was announced I thought "great! The music and camera work will finally make those race scenes interesting, maybe then it'll make feel something" then I saw the first trailer and knew right then and there that I wasn't gonna bother
And the funny part is while some think that it's more grounded MFG is actually LESS realistic than Initial D.... Such a shame that what we got was so devoid of passion
MF Ghost reads like some really crappy fanfiction of Initial D. Plenty of Initial D fans who were influenced by the series (like me) despise this shitshow of a sequel. I hope this gains more popularity. There's almost no substance to this show as far as technical stuff related to the cars goes either.
As much as Mf Ghost convinced us Kenta had Takumi's driving abilities, we are also not excited more by things and so the show is dull, and the guys who made it really followed some scheme doing it
At 7 min. The GR Corolla is Dope! Just as cool as the 80s corollas easily
MFG just... sucks. I totally agree with the last of Kanata's drive, he has no need to be great, and isn't the Fujiwara of his time. Takumi had drive, he was the best on Akina, and he wanted to make sure it stayed that way and that he could be the best ever.
If anybody is the MF Ghost, it's Takumi Fujiwara, the Ghost of Akina.
Yeah, I agree with almost everything in this video. The charcters are written really shittly and it doesn't seem like it's gonna get better, the pacing is all over the place, the story is cliche and boring. Yet, somehow I can't really bring myself to hate it. You mention that the only good scenes are the ones referencing Initial D, and I disagree. The twin overtake, the scene where he loses all time saved up by great driving on a straight road, the ultra super late breaking shit were all really cool and made kinda feel like Initial D did. Most of the issues with the anime are just the issues with the manga and it makes me real damn sad knowing that it won't get better.
Oh I don't think the only good scenes are the ones referencing initial d. I was saying that the fan base at large feels that way. Because that's the most popular scene from the series. Those scenes you mentioned could be great if they mattered at all but they really don't. I should have dedicated some time to this but the qualification time trial laps are actually more important than the races themselves. Those are what determines if you get to actually race and win prize money. So nothing that happens during the races actually matter. He could have gotten dead last. As long as he qualifies in the next time trial, he's in. Which again even that issue could have been solved by just making Kanata care about his placement.
Yeap, fair enough.
I went back to check if the camerawork was really that bad, since I remembered quite the contrary, and for the scenes where something actually happens, it's good and dynamic. Also forgot to mention that the voice acting is really good, suprisingly.
Not initial D Season 1 level, of course, but still. I think it makes it a little easier to follow the action.
So you're right, it's good enough when something happens, the trouble is, since races are spread out across 5+ episodes instead of 2 or less, you get like 1 moment of action per episode and then like 15 minutes of nothing really. Whereas in initial d they're much quicker paced so you'd get like a dozen back to back exciting moments
How you compare the kansei dorifto episode/scene is perfect.
GR86s/BRZs are given a trashy rep irl as unreliable, overproduced "square" enthusiast cars. Building up a rep like that for the car and then given mystique, interest, and a PULL into the car and its driver would make it more interesting. Imagine kanata or wtv the mf ghost's mc is called didnt like driving at all, wanted a self driving electric, and only used the 86 because it was what he had, and he was only in japan because he was looking for his father, not racing and his dad. Sure, its a bit of same old, same old, but its soooo much better to start a character off understandably unlikable, because you can develop and build them over time. Takumi in the first few episodes is aloof, and an enthusiasts nemesis: someome who doesnt respect cars, driving, or what car theyre driving, and see it only as a means of point a to point b.
Now imagine that lambo or whatever is practicing the downhill, and a STOCK GR86 smokes it in one of the hairpins. Maybe it catches up/overtakes it later, but the idea that it has even a chance of beating the lambo pisses off a snotty rich driver behind it, while notal a technically bad driver, doesnt hold a key in reality to the 86s driver.
Thats how you do a sequel for initial d. Call backs, similar, but different

Hard agree.... Also, as someone who has actually BUILT cars and bikes, MFG isn't even that much more realistic than ID, and it's also way less realistic in other ways XD
MFG so was SO bland and disappointing "Death Zones", brightly lit super-wide roads, boring cars using a fraction of the road, boring characters (especially whatever the MC's name was, I honestly cannot remember), no unrealistic but super-hype drifting, no drama nor tension (having millions of viewers doesn't make it more exciting than people hanging out on the course), everyone constantly vomiting out exposition rather than letting the story naturally build, the GT86 being an actually solid car that- when modded- could actually hang with euro sports cars as opposed to the AE-86 legit being an absolute POS chassis that Takumi wheels the shit out of against objectively FAR superior cars even if they were similar in cost.... But eh, it's whatever.

I watched MF Ghost until the "17" episode. I did not think it was good before that but that was pretty much the point where there was no longer any justification to watch something so boring. Who the fuck thought it was a good idea to make a whole episode about being horny for 17 year old girls in the middle of a race in an anime about racing cars? I felt disgusted just knowing that I like other stuff that the same person have made.
MF ghost would be legendary if they didn't make it
Nice joke, great rage bait, I laughed. Truly one of the videos of all time.
I dont carwe baout the plot just innit for th e sick races and the eyruibrat

@Mousyy yeah I realized that after watching the video further. Was trying to find this comment to delete it but I got distracted and forgot lol
9:38 - I don't entirely have an issue with using real life scenes (or based off real esque camera work). If done correctly, it gives the anime enough connection to go on real life anime pilgrimages, additional merch sales, and likely some tourism collab. Also it can let the audience (especially Japanese) better connect with the setting (and imagine being in that anime world). The Initial D example would be weebs going to Mt Haura (Mt Akina) to recreate some shots of the start line, hairpin curves and the such..... Bocchi the rock was also pretty intentional with realistic shots, and did an overall good job in connecting fans and giving its places some character & charm.
Ofc MF Ghost is trying for the reasons above, but just doesn't do it right. Being set in the future, I don't have a connection with these places. Also the roads & places are too bland and unmemorable. Comparatively, Akina & Usui pass had their unique features, challenging corners that allow for an interesting & high stakes race. Its why I will visit Initial D's Mt Akina, but not the MFG courses (even though I've inadvertently been there a few times).

Thank goodness you didn't compare it with the final duel from season 2
Bcoz that one duel slaps way too hard.
The OST, the context of the race, especially the second run ehere takumi realises his car's hidden potential, make up my mind blasting in the background...
Holy fuck...that duel is initial d peak... No other duel remotely comes close (the r32 and fc duel in season 5 is close in terms of the story context)
Imo if you were a car guy you would rip your hair off, so for context, the gt86 i assume at the end of the show has like 210-220 horses at most, sure agility is one thing but the other cars are way superior. Even the twins in the 4c and lotus exige would smoke the toyota cause they are lighter and slightly more powerful, and then later on he goes to overtake the porsche which are known to be among the best performance cars out there, look up nurburgring lap times and you will see. Sorry for erm actuallying a lot but by god is it annoying, and initial d was bad when it came to plot armor after 3rd stage. Sure theres flaws when it comes to that in initial d but urgh. Grinds my gears to no end
Yeah every car person would know that its just bullshit. Like the argument is that Kanata is just THAT good at racing that he can beat faster cars, but everyone who knows racing knows that there is a hard limit on what cars are capable of and they can't just magically go faster. You look up the Nurburgring record for that car, that is the limit of how fast it can go. It's just simply not possible to go significantly faster. So you just realize that its nothing but plot armour in terms of how Kanata is able to be so fast. The GT86 is just simply not fast enough.
The part that bugs me the most is after the first race when the mechanics tune up the GT86, they literally bring up the option of supercharging it, but they decide against it because "suspension and brakes matter more". Like no dude it doesn't matter more, its extremely clear that the GT86 needs more power above all else, they just don't give it any because then the "slow car beats fast car" plot device stops working and the show grinds to a halt.
@@bryanribey While it makes sense in Initial D that underpowered AE86 can still be good on such roads, GT86 overtaking Lotus and Porsche is just hilarious.
I'm glad I just found your channel, as I've been on an initial d binge recently. There's this anime about kart racing called Capeta, which is what MF Ghost should have been/taken inspiration from

I literally just commented on this. It made me so uncomfortable and it literally had no reason to exist, he could be obsessed with 18 or 19 y/o and it would still have the same effect. Just odd to me he CHOOSE for them to be 17...
This video verbalizes a lot of feelings (trauma) I feel about Shingeno. Thank you
I already anticipated this since i read the manga, the fact that a barely modified GT86 can beat supercars with v12 in a non drifting competition is some goddamn physics magic bullshits. Shigeno fumbled this since the start. Facts and logic was not in this one since manga dropped. Keiichi Tsuchiya have also no input on this.
It's crazy cause there is only so far being small and nimble can get you. If you're familiar with Best Motoring, the fastest car they ever had on that private touge course was an AMG GTR followed by a Nissan GTR, these are monster mahcines that are in no way light but grip like crazy and probably can never be touched time wise.
@@SpikeRazzor The fastest sector times on Gunsai are held by an Mazda FD and Honda S2000 with both being heavily modified, so no actually, being small and nimble still comes out on top.
I still personally think a true blue sequel to Initial D should have focused on Takumi starting his career in professional rally racing for the Toyota works team, or Keisuke starting his circuit racing career. Either one of those would have been far better than what we got, since it would have covered:
-Both characters having to pretty much relearn driving the car, since they would handle so drastically different from the AE86/RX-7 they were used to before
-Overcoming their behaviors as a street racer to fine tune themselves to be a rally/circuit racer
-Not winning every race from the get go because they're already established racing pros
MFG had the potential to be something good, and instead Shingeno pretty much gave us a pair of rose-tinted glasses.
2-liter naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder boxer engine making 200 horsepower outperform 600+ horsepower hypercar is just too ridiculous lmao. mf ghost is a joke
InitialD was similar tho. They gave Takumis 86 a new 'epic' engine that somehow gave him the edge.
@@ogzombieblunt4626 the difference in horsepower wasn't that big in initial d. Takumi new 86 had 240hp and most opponent only had around 300hp, plus they were downhill touge racing and not on track.

The whole theme of this universe doesn't make any sense but its entertaining. Drifting is not faster than traction on asphalt, so the whole premise of the original series is not realistic.
