How I setup my Brake pedal for max performance !

  • Short travel stiff BRAKE or Long travel softer is the the best for simracing and our muscle memory ? I have tested those two options for few years and here is what i found works best for me !

    After purchasing the VRS pedals, I kept the suggested stiff red spring that everyone says to use. After 6 months I decided to try the lighter blue spring, it made all the difference for me in trail braking and comfort. Much easier to trail brake and quickly get to 100%. Like you say, try everything for yourself and find something thats good for you.

      Yeah the biggest con is that you can hit the bump stop with the blue spring. You don’t have to press the pedal like a Brontosaurus and mess up your joints lol. When hitting the bump stop it’s so easy to trailbrake imo. Especially because there is a spring that pushes back instead of rubbers.

    Super video, as usual. I agree totally, my old bones can't manage 160kg braking so my set up is very similar to yours, a bit of movement requiring less force. For me it's about feeling, when I can feel what the car is doing that builds confidence and results in quicker lap times.

    Awesome video, absolutely on point, and I wish it came 3 weeks ago when I purchased P2000's (upgrade from Thrustmaster T-LCM's). After 2 weeks of mucking around with settings, 1-2 second slower lap times, and battling to understand why the 'experts' recommend harder brake pedal, I changed to yellow/blue springs, linear input curve, and backed off the max input value = Instant success!! 99% of my racing is in the V8 Supercar, which is literally driven with the pedals rather than the wheel. For that reason, the new pedals are awesome = super smooth and lots of control through the range.

      The P2000 red yellow setup is bit hard indeed and sometimes after long drive with hardly reached 100% ones my leg get fatigue!
      The V8 are as you’ve said pedal driven cars indeed and I love them so much ! I wish one day to find the time and master those cars !
      Absolute respect for all V8 drivers 💪

    Ultimate pro's here. Again your spot on. I tired up down and sideways and you have to make it livable while achieving control. Sometimes the best products require the most thought and trial. In the end there is nothing like it. Like life you have to work for it. Money can get you fancy things but persistence and the willingness to tinker over and over will bring you much more smiles per kilowatt.

    Great video, like all things everyone is gonna be slightly different and testing what works best for you is the way to go. I do think running higher braking force does help since you’re increasing the dynamic range but also make sure you’re doing it to a comfortable limit to avoid injury like you said. At the end of the day we are doing this for fun, not to beat ourselves up haha.

    It’s all about personal preference as u said!! For me, I personally prefer a short travel and very heavy brake! I found that it’s very easy to lockup with soft/medium brake pressure especially with cars like the 992 cup car and others with no ABS. When I’m going top speed down a straight “I know it’s a sim and we don’t feel the forces” my instinct is to step hard on the brakes and with soft pedals I find it very difficult to apply enough brake to stop without locking up!

      I know exactly what you mean , that’s the problem I have with the cup and the V8 and need at least 2-3 days to go close the good braking control 😁

    I like a good amount of pedal travel, slightly soft pressure. I can reach threshold and trail brake much more accurately this way.

      That’s exactly what I found works for me after years of exploring myself!
      Much more control in the entire and mid corner with little more travel and softer setting ! Those are very important parts of the braking and with the short hard pedal was really hard to be precise and consistent for few hours drive 😃

      That’s exactly what I am trying to change on my fanatec csl lc pedals… more pedal travel. But I am not sure how I can do that. Should I remove one of the elastomers? Or buy a spring? Please help if possible!!! Thanks for the great tips always!!

      @@joaomoretto I've replaced all original elastomers from the CSL LC with a "Progressive" elastomer from 3DRAP and the "Hard" spring from Race Sim Engineering Brake Tuning Kit (the kit comes with 1 soft and 1 hard spring). You could replace 1 of the original elastomers with a spring and get a similar feel with more travel (put the spring towards the pedal face plate and have remaining elastomer toward the load cell). Hope this helps 🙂

    I know this has been probably said already but what I really enjoy in your channel, you're not talking about "do this to achieve maximum performance!", you talk about, as your name implies, beyond matter. In my perspective instead of talking objective things that might help a few people saying that X pro uses this, you talk about the mentality, the physical performance, the attributes of each individual and adjusting your setup for you to be comfortable and at your best. It doesn't matter if you set your pedal to 25% force and set it at 11,3cm distance because "that's what professionals use" but rather you say "be mindful of your knees, your position in the seat, etc" which is of much more value.
    All of this to say, my friend you inspire me and I bet you inspire many others on being the best drivers we can all be

    This was a great video because I had to switch from soft to hard since my Fanatec V3 on soft has a really bad sensor that started jumping. I have to stay with hard now but do enjoy a stiff brake now

    I love this video as its good to express someone of your skill level to show its not all about the stiffest settings its about balance and experiment. I only have V3s but I haven't installed the BPK as I feel like since using them and my real car break I prefer some travel to help remember how much force I need. Love your content mate 👌🏾

      I have the BPK and can honestly recommend it 100%. I would advise trying one red + green + orange sponge combo first. That's what I have in mine. I would prefer mine to be stiffer tbh. Also if you want more travel you can adjust the pedal itself. But if you're happy with your setup there's no need to think of anything else

    Such an awesome video, it deserves a lot more views as it is something that must be heard by more people. Good timing as well, got the Fanatec V3's and with the default setup and settings I couldn't trailbrake and was locking up. I 've heard about "hard brake pedals" but right now I feel like I need pedal travel to brake correctly so I was confused. Coming from the T3PA pedals and karting irl I feel like I need a decent amount of travel to have good brake control.

      It is not just about braking hard but we control the car as much with the wheel that much with the pedals as well everyone out there must find the perfect sweet spot for it self and not fall in that trap 🙈

    this is so funny. I was making my brake padel harder and harder to push. I have Fanatec V3 with the hardest brake kit option and i set the pressure very high. But that made my leg hurt after long sessions. No i tuned it back a little bit and now i can drive for hours without problem. Still i have all the control i need. And those padels are not that expensive! But still i love them. I will keep them until they are broken or very old.

    Wow you hurt your knee needing so much pressure on the brake pedal? Ouch! I'm glad you recovered. I know a normal car brake pedal isn't that hard. I'm glad you have analyzed how to keep yourself comfortable and to prevent injury using the brake pedal. You definitely need a way to keep yourself from moving backwards for sure. I'm only a hobby / doing sim racing for fun so I only have a stand. The big difference is the stand has a chair holder that prevents me from moving backwards when pressing on any of the pedals. Definitely a must have. Thanks for all of your tips and information. Always helps us beginners.

    Also watched Random Callsign's video on this, and I'm happy you guys spread this information around. In the end it's subjective and you are giving out good pointers, especially regarding fatigue and injury. I've spent alot of time finetuning my brake pedal, and in terms of performance I'm actually super satisfied, but after long sessions I find my foot to be in some pain. It's around 40-50kg on the pedal plate, feels great but I start to think it's not worth compromising health. The leavers on my Mountainbike's hydraulic system aren't heavy at all, but I still have got an amazing feeling. Food for thought, definitely! Also, choose the right shoes, too narrow of a shoe also caused pain for me, haha :D

      @@chepilevski Some people stated that real racing cars have got heavy brakes with short travel, and everything else is not realistic. People adopted that, as well as the sim-pedal manufacturers jumped on to that thesis, offering pedals that could read 100+ kg on the plate. The majority of people in simracing want the most realistic feeling they can possibly get, me included. That worked out, like a self-reinforcing cycle. Now it seems we are starting to look beyond that theory :)

      Great set. I started with mediums which is default setting, and now I changed to the short soft rubber bumper which is the second most stiff setting.

      @@pato17racing ya I’m now on the hardest setting and it is a bit like a brick wall. I’ve had great success w that for months now but thinking to work back to mid softness. Fun to tinker ha.

      Test and make sure you give a week at least for each setting bro ! At the end you will know exactly which settings will work for you personally 💪

    Another great vid! I hope the pedal cam from Lando Norris's McLaren also shows people we don't need stupidly heavy brakes with almost no movement. And you're right without G assist on the pedals sim racing doesn't need to replicate stupid stiff brakes, better to find the balance like you instruct.

      I really tested that brick like pedal for months trying to convince myself will work but it never did for me and ones I soften it back I’ve got the control in the entry and mid corner ! Sometimes I lock tires easier but after practicing the same car for 2 days I have full control 😃

      @@chepilevski I did the same after your video about pedal and seat position which helped a lot with my back pain (old injury). Going from super stiff to softer brakes I was getting faster, more consistent lap times, with better endurance and less back pain. With a heavy brake in sim racing all we're doing is shoving our spine into our seats, after a certain point the extra pressure ends up also putting force into our backs so some of that extra pressure goes to waste and just hurts our endurance. And now we're seeing real race cars and drivers who aren't using brick-like pedals, so going for a super heavy brake feel isn't even as realistic as people may have thought

    Once again, your advice is spot on! I made the mistake of thinking that I needed to go to hydraulics to get the braking and throttle feel I wanted. What I ended up with was a brake pedal that barely moved and a throttle pedal that felt like a brake pedal. That's not what I want/need. Stiff brakes with a bit more travel and solid but springy throttle. The Im Sim Talentos are on my very short list. BTW, what pedals were you using that had the heel rest on the pedals? That seems like a pretty smart idea! Thanks for the outstanding content and advice!

    Great vid. I’ve done all variety of setups on my Sprints. Currently success with hardest elastomer config w 60kg. Will try a known car track combo on slightly softer setup tomorrow as I’m interested to test again now! Tinkering is a fun part of the hobby!

      @@chepilevski I only went to hardest possible setup because of the Invicta pedal hype (you must have hard pedal against disc pad feeling). Tonight I moved back to only slightly softer setup and shaved .5 second off my best time in ams2 @ Spielberg Historic w M1 Pro Car in just 1 hour test! I think better mid corner/trail brake feeling? Will continue test this week to see if consistent improvement. I have the new Sprint elastomer upgrade kit arriving tomorrow! So that’s a whole new thing to test!

    FINALLY, someone that says how it is. This 100kg+ brake force for simulator propaganda is really getting out of hand. It's like the pedal makers don't have any other marketing tool.
    Talking about real world driving while ignoring circumstances like G forces says everything you need to know. There is an interview with GT drivers elsewhere asking how they simrace and most talk about something in the range of 40bar for sims.
    Thank you for talking about health! I can only imagine how many people have a poor seating position but set 80+kg super stiff brakes that will ruin their body.

    I think it's safe to say that racecars have stiff brake pedals because if they didn't they would lock up easily because of all the weight of the driver shifting closer to it. A driver would adjust to be stiff as hell on the car for that reason, but on a sim you don't get lots of inertia (even if you had motion systems) and as such you need a softer brake to be more accurate while sim racing and hard pedals make it more difficult.

    yeah, setting pressure high to the point of knee injury is stupid. But I like having it high enough to where I'm not locking up the brakes when I panic in the heat of battle. Short travel, enough pressure for 80% braking in most cases works for me.
    IRL, my miata wilwoods suffer from pad knockback after high G turns and I usually have to pump it once before the next turn. SIMS != IRL

    I love having almost no movement to my brake pedal I like to use the muscle memory method it does work my lap times are very very consistent, and trail breaking for me is easier with a stiff break with hardly any movement that’s what I’m used to it basically no travel I’ve had my pedals setup like that for 2 years now I don’t like a LMG travel brake too hard to trail brake imo but everyone drives different with different driving styles

    as always a fab and informative video.
    I went about it a slightly different way round. I f*$cked my knee up. Then I tried to adjust. 🤣🤣
    It was actually one of the biggest hurdles me getting back in the rig ( other than ACTIUALLY getting in ) - the pedals were too much for the injury to cope with . So I dialed it all down.
    It allowed me to drive - but I am still not inclined to turn it back up... Liking the slightly softer
    I also put a set of sim3d vibration motors on... they are very good and very informative.
    Do you ever right foot brake? I do a lot and i find softer means you are more aware and consistent with the different forces required for each pedal - again building that muscle memory not to stamp....

      Yeh, I know for your injury bro but honestly from my perspective even if I have very soft brake wen ones I master the car I’m absolutely fine controlling it ! Wen I deal with new car particularly without ABS then I struggle a bit till I master the car again in few months and drive without stress!
      I honestly never use my right leg and every time I touch the brake with the right it feels like brick even wen is soft for the left foot 🤣

      @@chepilevski Sorry - ... a brain typo 🙄🙄 we are talking LEFT foot braking It would be a fab video exploring the benefits of left foot braking ( or not ) . .. i was taught by a rally driver years ago and it completely changed my perspective as to what a brake can do regarding simultaneous power and brake input . sure it does require a complete internal ' rewire' - that is why most people don't do it ... it is like learning to rub you stomach & pat your head - and also TOTALLY contrary to what road driving teaches you . If you persist past the few crisis / drama clutch brakes.. it is fab... a ballet
      personally it was amazing as i was recovering to able to naturally brake with my left foot as my right could not have done so at the time ..
      I would love to see the video you would make about the possible transition to explore R to L braking and your approach to the 'rewire' needed

    as a rule of thumb the more road going is the car the longer the pedal movement (which makes it feel softer), the more racing car all the way to F1 the shorter the pedal travel.
    He explained it perfectly but let metry to summarize what I understood: In road going cars such as the MX5 you will not gain as much time by going earlier to 100% brake force than by manipulating the weight transfer accurately. The more high power / downforce car more gains are to be had by reaching maximum braking force faster, weight transfer manipulation doesn't gain you as much time anymore in comparison

      That’s exactly how it goes , the high downforce cars don’t need weight transfer manipulation but accurate fast and precise braking then just smash the throttle on the exit and try to gain as much downforce as you can ! Great setup helps the rotation of the car and there is almost no time to play with the chase at all !
      With the road cars we have to help the car rotate around the corner manipulating the weight transfer!
      I personally prefer medium long travel to still make the push and lift off the pedal quick enough to make the car more responsive!

    Don't fuck up your knee, most important information in the video!
    I have the V3 and I tried every combination, those pedals are only good with the stiffest brake, Almost no movement. The way you calibrate them is the most important, I try to calibrate the most I will ever use in the driver, but then i recalibrate the brake in game setting. That way, I always have a baseline that I can modulate per game setting.

    @Race Beyond Matter. Not sure if your aware of this but I see you put the yellow spring on first then the harder one but that is the wrong way so Simagic told me.
    Because it uses a pull rod the first spring that comes together is the last spring you put on then as you max that out then the harder spring should compress so the first spring.
    I noticed your yellow is on first and then red so thought I'd mention it. I had to ask them because I took them off and wasn't sure which way too put them but the explanation they gave saying its a pull rode makes sense. If the rod was pushing then yes but it pulls so thought I'd mention it.
    If you Google the simagic pedals you will see they have the red one on first then the yellow. Hope it helps as it maybe why your knee got bad so fast because your going from a hard spring then soft as in backwards

    I think the most important part is knowing when you reach 100% brake input. If you are a above average strong person and you can easaly press for example 120 kg, you will have a hard time on HE Sprints because it's hard to know when you press maximum input. In ACC this is important because if you want to start trailbraking you NEED to know where 100% input is. I had Sprints for a year and couldnt get consistent with them. Now i bought VRS and because the LC is bigger i can feel where the "end" of the travel is. Now i know when i press 100% input and can start easing of the brakes a lot easier.

      I currently have the V3 from Fanatec and am considering buying the Sprints. I'm not very strong and don't really need more brake pressure than maybe anything between 40-60 kg, but thought the Sprints might help me with trailbraking. Do the Sprints have no end stop or something that feels like it? I hope you know what I mean.
      Maybe you can tell me if the change is worth it.

      @@Noeln83 hi. They don’t have a bump stop. Sprints are descent but imo only if you don’t max them out. VRS is better in pretty much every way. They do have a bump stop as well. The way I set them up now is with the blue spring so that I can hit the bump stop pretty comfortably. This way I know when I hit 100% braking and can start trailbraking from exactly max braking input. I’m not invested in them btw ;). Just my fair 2 cents.

      Hey buddy, don’t overthink that aspect of the settings and just try to find what suits you the best!
      I personally prefer 2 to 2.5cm movement of the pedals with progressive feeling and the stiffness is irrelevant as long as it feels comfortable to you 👍

Before order p1000 I used a call load pedal which was stiff like a brick so I took out 2 of the 4 elastomers and i add an aftermarket spring. It has the perfect stiffness now so I would try to replicate it to p1000

      For my test I prefer bit open leg 🦵 exactly as is on that meme I send ! Not sure for the exact angle but if is too bend I start using my ankle and then my muscles fatigue more and leg shakes from my knee!

    Personally I use around 50-60kg max pressure and around 30-40mm of travel. Im almost 50 and been at it a very long time, also my body isn't what it used to be. That being said you also don't need the best high end pedals to be proficient, just being able to understand and translate your understanding of what the cars needs is enough. A cheap CSL elite load cell will be just as good as any other very expensive pedal with time and practice.

      @@Simlife101 very subjective. Physically I get sciatica if I have a pedal thats too heavy. I think you need a pressure that you can achieve comfortably, it should not be a struggle to hit every time, because you will be hitting it almost every stop then bleeding the pressure off to the apex.

    I think many problems with the knee or hip come from an awkward placement of the pedal (plus too high forces of course)
    I prefer to have the brake pedal further left (almost at the usual clutch position)
    The leg should be pretty straight imo

    I'm half with you and half against you... I like the realism of a stiff pedal and the fact that I can use high friction pads without worrying about locking up. But like you it's easier to break precise if you use less pressure. Here's my example in iRacing. Higher friction pads or smaller brake master cylinder so I can outbreak everybody and I use high pedal pressure also. But to get more precise breaking I add in some brake Force Factor so that if I'm using 50% pedal or less it's easy to modulate. Give it a try you will love it.

    honestly the brake force also depends on how you sit, legs down= easier to reach higher brake pressure, I personally sit in a hybrid position use heusinkvelds with 80 kgs and I still find It to be good

    What do you think about heels rest plate ?
    Is it better to use one (set close to the pedals) or better to not have one and let the heel push on the base of the pedal ?

      I’m not sure if I understand exactly your question buddy but if you mean just for the extra plates most companies do for there pedals that just put the feet high and help people with small feet! The movement reminds the same and the heal still slide wen we press!
      If you invert the pedal upside down then the heal remain stable which is much more comfortable!
      If you mean about those pedals I used ( SIMGRADE R7) with the moving heal plate with the pedals together I would say the throttle control is great but not great for the brake which is hard and we actually detach the heal every time we brake hard from the plate !

    finally my first day with load cell pedals today, I mounted it on my rig and started lapping, I knew what was coming but the real experience is priceless, definitely a learning curve but don't want to get negative habits, so my question is about the technique: I am curious to learn if I must be putting my heel on the base plate while braking which is hard at the moment for me or viceversa, am I totally free to raise my left foot and put it on the brake pedal which looks comfy at the moment for a rookie like me. Or the breaking is combination of both ways depending on the situation? appreciate your comments on that

      It is combination really.
      When you press to max you will de touch your heal for sure but in light braking your heal will be the support point to modulate 🤛
      It will take some time to get used to those because of the learning curve but eventually you will become better 🤛

    I found for me I'm more accurate with a stiff, minimum movement brake pedal. But I know that others find such strong brakes unuseable. So while I say to people that they should try a stiff brake pedal, I'm not telling them they are wrong for not doing as I do.

      Hard never worked for me as well! Couldn’t control the trail braking in the entry and mid corner!
      In that part of the braking face I really need more relaxed feed to be precise and the the maximum from the grip 😃
      The hard I was just inconsistent after 20-30 min drive ones my muscles get little tired!

      @@chepilevski exactly I have full control over trail braking with a softer pedal not to mention that I dont miss a turn lol when I first started out I went hard straight away and couldn't make a turn if my life depended because loads of channels tell people the only way to go is with a 1000 kg load cell...joke. but I found this weird as I've never been in a race car with rock hard pedals and figured sim racers knew what's best and boy are most of them wrong. Every fast guy or girl I know run softer pedals. Like you said it all depends on how the user prefers it but hard pedals is such a cliché in the sim community. 100kg is enough for 99% of us combined with soft to medium bushings is perfect for most.

    I never understood the mantra "hardest possible brake + no travel" and manufacturers making Hydraulic Pedals with some travel. If "no travel" why even make hydraulic pedals. Just put pressure plate and be done. Today @random callsign released a video about this topic. And it seems e sports drivers use at lest some brake travel and the majority configure their pedals for a decent amount of travel. So I think most of the hype about hydraulic pedals is just marketing. I think if I bought 1000 EUR+ pedals (like Asetek Invicta) I would also probably think this is the best possible brake configuration. But this never made any logical sense to me. Brake with Progressive harder travel makes the most logical sense to me. You train your muscle memory and is probably more precise with travel involved than no travel.

      So, what's better for "normal" simracer? Who just want to race. What equipment would help you the most? Help you the fastest? I don't know.

    I'm always astonished how little people know about their feet.
    We know how much we can differentiate with our hands, even if we are blind, or in VR, we still can differentiate and identify what we are touching.
    Well with the feet its exactly the same, we have receptors that teach the brain. Try it and walk barefoot...
    Why the hell does the sim-racers continue to ignore what the feet really feel in a real racing car. Why do the sim-racers pay expensive wheels to feel the tires with their hand ???
    When it comes to controlling the car, It's the brake that is directly linked to the wheels, the tires, the road.
    Why are the pedals disconnected to the wheels and road in sim-racing ???
    Why are there no FFB Pedals???
    Well, probably because there is not much profit to made out of a FFB pedal. Because it's so easy and cheap to DIY.
    Fix a bass-shaker on the pedal, and set different easily identifiable frequencies (high than other effects, if you have more bass-shakers)
    in SimHub for wheel slip, wheel block, ABS on that bass-shaker only.
    And you will have setup any brake pedal for max performance.
    The braking foot will take over the control of the car, you will even forget the FFB of the expensive wheel in your hands...
