I was 11 years old when this song came out. I loved it from the first time I heard it. It was particularly meaningful to this generation because the Vietnam War was heating up. As you can imagine there were many painful separations, this song expressed the loneliness & longing of many of those couples. It was also a slow dance standard. No other love song has ever come close to Bobby Hatfield’s rendition here, except their other hit, You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling. Bill Medley does a beautiful job as lead singer in that one.

This song was written 10 years before Bobby Hatfield sang it here. It was written for a prison movie called "Unchained", about a man in prison who is separated from his beloved. "Time goes by so slowly" --- yeah, it would for those in prison. "Wait for me, wait for me" --- he is yearning for her, asking her to be faithful. "Will you still be mine?" --- when he finally gets out of prison, will she still be his, will she have waited for him, will her love have survived the long separation? This is what he is thinking about and wondering all the time he is in prison. This song is so romantic and enduring and timeless because 1) the melody itself is beautiful, 2) the lyrics touch the deepest places in the human heart, 3) Bobby Hatfield had an incredible voice.

Song is about missing his girl not being able to “touch” her. “Time goes by so slowly” when back in the day there were no mobile devices internet facetime Facebook. If someone was traveling and left you, you honestly worried about them because ppl would have to make long distance calls or write letters to communicate. Now we can talk to them while they’re on the plane. Time apart back then can and did a LOT to relationships. Imagine a non superficial life without mobile and internet, no one can anymore so they can’t understand a song like this.

The song was written for a 1940s prison movie called "Unchained". The song was sung by a guy missing his love and considering escaping to reunite with her.
The Righteous brothers were 2 singers, Bobby Hatfield (the angelic voiced tenor on this song), and Bill Medley (a bass/baritone). On every album each one had one solo. Bill Medly is still performing. Bobby Hatfield died on tour in 2005.

This video is a single cut from the extremely popular Andy William's Show. Sung was the title song to a totally awful prison movie called "Unchained". The producers never gave the song a name, so it was just referred to as the "Unchained melody."
Cut out from the video, is the intro by Andy Williams after the duo (Bill Medley, baritone, and Bobby Hatfield, tenor) who
had just finished singing together. (They had briefly explained how they got their name and why Bobby would be singing a solo, which came as a complete surprise to Mr. Williams.)
Though reportedly covered by over 300 artists over the last 60 years, Bobby's version is still widely considered "his" to own.
It's popularity was rekindled with the release of the movie, "Ghost."
Of note with this song is that Bobby sings over 20 separate and distinct notes covering three octaves, all in perfect pitch, tone and timbre. The greatest professionals and singing experts have stated that no one else have ever sang such a song with such reserved strength and emotion, yet with seemingly lack of effort that no one has yet to match in their cover attempts.

This is a love song from a young man separated from his wife or girlfriend and wondering if she is waiting for him and telling her how much he loves her, needs, and has that little doubt if she is still his, “ are you still mine “ and how much he still needs her. This is mine and my husbands song as he was separated from me for a whole year when the Air Force stationed sent him to S. Korea during the Pueblo Crisis. You need to google that. N. Korea attacked our ship the Pueblo and took the crew hostage. Said the ship has crossed into N. Korean waters, but it actually was within the international water boundary. Anyway, this is our song and when my husband came back to me from the long lonely river of the the sea, I had waited for him, given birth to our first child. We were in our early 20’s, I was 22, he 23 and we danced the night away and got reacquainted to that beautiful song. We can still dance to it and do. My husband and I consider that we were born and grew up in one for the best times ever. Life was real back then. Life is all fake now. Altered voices, pictures, and made up lives on social media always staring down at the smart phones! No one knows what is real or not real anymore ! ☹️

This song was written as the theme song for a movie called Unchained about a prisoner who is about to be released. He is singing to his girlfriend who he hopes is waiting for him. The movie had only limited success, but the song garnered some attention. It has been covered by literally dozens of artists over the years including Elvis.
Bobby Hatfield’s studio recording was a massive hit and has been featured in a number of movies, the most notable being Ghost with Patrick Swayzie.
This live performance was on the Andy Williams Show, a variety show very popular in the sixties. Hatfield’s perfect rendition is widely considered one of the greatest single live performances in popular music history, and is considered by most music experts to be the definitive version of the song.
One of the those instances when a live performance is better than the studio performance. This performance is different from the studio version especially the high notes at the end.
He covers a range of 20 notes and over an octave during the song, a remarkable feat for a male singer. And he does it effortlessly and with no electronic aids other than a microphone.
Bobby Hatfield is one half of the Righteous Brothers, a duo act. They are not actually brothers. The other singer is Bill Medly whose voice is completely different. And he can go as low as Bobby can go high. Their voices blend perfectly. They are among the best duo’s ever. They were known as blue eyed soul, because when they first started, they were often mistaken for a black group. Until they were seen.
You should check out. their YOU’VE LOST THAT LOVING FEELING. This song was also a massive hit, in fact, it was the most played song on TV and radio of the 20th century.

The character in Unchained was debating whether he should escape, to get home to his wife & family, or stay & serve his sentence (he starts climbing the fence, changes his mind & goes back). Also, Unchained Melody is 1 of the most covered songs of the 20th century, recorded over 1500 times, in multiple languages. The original is the movie version, sung by Robert "Todd" Duncan, a famous baritone opera singer & actor (he had a bit part in the movie). In 1945, he became the 1st African American to sing with a major opera company & the 1st to sing with an otherwise white cast.

This song is about being separated for a long period of time (for whatever reason) from someone you love. They are wondering whether their love has moved on,
"Are you still mine?" hoping they will be reunited when he returns.
"I'll be coming home, wait for me." Unchained Melody is one of the most poignant and beautiful love songs ever.

She didn't understand the words but she felt the emotion. Her hand over mouth was a: "OMG what is this I feel?" She was little girl not wanting her big brother to intrude in a special moment.

@@iandundrillon7842 I agree but some of that is because she’s so young. Only 13. True romantic love is still pretty new to her and understanding comes with maturity. Often so does the ability to process and self express.

I kind of feel bad for you guys. I can see a disconnect from the multiple generational gap here. You both looked mildly frigidity from being used to have a song torgue out your mind instead relating to the simplicity and greatness of this song.

Song was 10 years old then, came from a 1955 movie about guys considering escaping prison. Bad movie, good song. Was a song every vocal group had in their repertoire. Bobby's version was taken up by Vietnam war soldiers and their sweethearts waiting here back home for them.

He and Bill Medley were a duo but he sang this solo…his mom was in the audience for the first time. A lot of us listened to this song when our boyfriends were in Viet Nam fighting. He’s telling his wife or girlfriend that he is missing and loving her and to please wait for him to return. Many soldiers received a Dear John letter while they were in Nam fighting in a war.
