    What lovely personal stories Claire. The one about your grandparents was so sweet and they were together for 65 years ❤ As you said fragrances definitely can be very evocative and take you back to somewhere in your past, bringing back both the good and the not so good memories.
    My husband has terminal cancer and both my parents have dementia and I am making sure I wear a different fragrance every day so I don't have any fragrances that, in the future, will take me back to this heartbreaking time.
    I've never thought of you as weird. You (and Veronica) are both a breath of fresh air in your honesty and approach and watching you and connecting with you over the weekend takes my mind off what is happening in my life for a short time. So thank you for being you ❤

      Oh Fiona, that must be extremely hard to deal with. I can understand you not wanting to have any fragrance linked to such difficult times. I really hope TH-cam is a little escape for a bit for you. I am always so happy to see you in my comments. ❤️
      Veronica is fab isn't she? I agree, there are just some people that you know aren't trying to be too TH-cam and are just trying to be them and she is one. 🥰

    I loved this video so much! You are so articulate and I love the way you describe not only the scents themselves, but your memories and emotional attachment to these. I could relate to some of this, as a 1985 baby in the UK I also remember DKNY Be Delicious being everywhere at a certain point - both my housemate at Uni and my sister wore it so just seeing a photo of the bottle is immediately evocative of my early 20s! 🙂I actually wore the red delicious version myself and really liked that. Totally agree with your point re: your personality being your USP, it's absolutely why I watch you and what sets you apart from other creators (I find your content much more creative, interesting and thought-provoking than 99% of others, who just do constant hauls and top 10s) and it really speaks to me and my personality/interests too. My mum's perfumes growing up were Anais Anais and Cinnabar so these were both very present when I was growing up, and the perfume I wore for a lot of my 20s was Kenzo Flower, which now seems a slightly odd choice to me, but I got a free sample at a cinema (?! random) when I was about 17 and just loved it! My next signature after years with that was Issey Miyake L'Eau D'Issey and I went through multiple bottles. I can definitely relate to marking certain periods of my life through various scents too - in some ways it seems crazy that I didn't get more into perfume earlier on in my life (although I always liked it I wasn't obsessed like I have been for the last few years).

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! That's lovely of you to say! 🥰 Yes the entire be delicious line just takes me back. My friend has a bottle of red delicious and I smelt it recently, shame it's discontinued.
      Mum scents are ones you smell over and over so they get ingrained I think! Same, I remember I had samples of a few fragrances that I wouldn't have thought were me at all but somehow the sampling got me and I bought them 😂 I think trying more makes you pickier somehow. My friend wore Kenzo flower, I remember the huge bottle on her bag 🤣
      I don't think I was properly into fragrance until 2020 really, just enthusiastic up to then. Perfume really sucks you in. I'm always happy to see you, you are an OG sub!!! 🥰

    I really like your blouse. It looks excellent with the lipstick too☺️
    Rive Gauche is something that has always appealed to me visually, though I tend to doubt that I would enjoy wearing it. I had not heard about it being for women to buy for themselves, but I like that idea-the packaging is very unromantic and no-nonsense in a way that must’ve felt very modern then (and still now).
    That Miller Harris one sounds so right up my alley-tomato leaf, blackcurrant, mint! I haven’t been able to find it to try but I would really like to☹️ I was just saying to someone this morning how I was a little sad that I wouldn’t be getting any more cozy snowstorms vibes for the year, but you’ve reminded me that summer rains are also wonderful. So that’s something to look forward to.
    I think if I start soon I could still manage to fit in a 65-year romance… well, I’ll also need some serious help from medical science, but it’s not totally out of the realm of possibility!
    Lots of good stuff in this video. It sounds like you’ve had a great time on TH-cam over the years and that’s wonderful🥰

    Hi Dr. Smith
    Oh, Rive Gauche! Wore it for years, but too heavy for me now as I have daily migraines.
    I truly only have one fragrance that I would love to be able to own again;
    I wore PRECIOUS MOMENTS back in the 70's, a flanker to White Shoulders. They are very similar, but I preferred PM. Very unusual bottle too. Then it was discontinued.
    *Lipcolor is beautiful!

    Black Opium will always be in my collection, no matter how many complex perfumes I try. It just makes me feel so good. I also agree with scent associations, which is why sometimes I gravitate towards powdery, retro style, ambery perfumes. They remind me of my mom and are so reminiscent of the 80s. I have a goofy inner shame about my uncharacteristic love affair with Mancera's 'Roses Vanille'. I can't help it. It's one of those obnoxious party-starting friends who are always a happy good time, despite it taking a while to 'get' them and really just appreciate them for who they are. When you stop resenting these immature loudmouths and open up to who they really are, it's a wonderful kind of love. I believe there's a place in everybody's life for that one superficial, warm-hearted boisterous friend who is reliable as someone who cheers and distracts you, bringing true value to your life in a way that you may first resent or bristle against. Roses Vanille is the fragrance version of that human, for me.

    Loved this. Watched on my day off work with a cup of coffee, whilst the gloomy day did it's gloomy thing outside my window. Charming video. I can't be the only person who genuinely and seriously wishes they could travel through time with bottles of reformulated, insipid versions of classic fragrances in order to compare them to the versions I remember from my childhood (or versions that existed before I did). Wouldn't that be exquisitely enjoyable fun?! I want to see just how reliable my memory is, and which fragrances have indeed altered beyond recognition. PS= BDK's 'Bouquet de Hongrie' smells to me uncannily similar to Marc Jacobs Daisy.

      Err, I think I just had fun with what I wore because I hated that job so much 😂 I really pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable to wear to work in that kind of role. I remember wearing a lot of bright colours and 50s style skirts and rockabilly dresses, then also a bit of random Victorian goth occasionally 😂. I guess there was that 2000s does 50s and Victoriana in the early half wasn't there?
      Black Orchid is really one I save for special occasions. It really works to get you noticed, especially outdoors. I know it's been reformulated though so I do cherish my old bottle.

    Hello friend, this is a beautiful, meaningful Tag and video. Thank you very much for telling many aspects from the experiences and associations between you and the fragrances. I fully agree, Rive Gauche smells pretty much like the bottle, it's fresh, metallic. Yes, Rive Gauche is aldehydic, little bit sweet from the flowers and the peach, it's an elegant scent. Black Opium will always be a big love, my favourite is actually the intense version, similar to OG but the intense is stronger on the licorice and has this absinthe fresh intriguing note in it which I love. What a lovely story of life! This is the megic of fragrances - they can transfer you to certain moements of your life, good or bad. I also have La petite robe noir black perfecto although I used to have a better leather scent - it was Essenza del Tempo by Trussardi - of course discontinued... I'm sure you'd like it too - violet and ginger in the opening with coffee, and leather in the drydown.

    Very eloquent and touching. It can be difficult to put into words how certain fragrances can affect us. It's going to be unique to each individual. But you did a great job of describing your experiences of the perfumes in your life.
    For myself, I don't seem to tie any fragrance to a particular person (except Tabu for my mother) or time in my life, whether positive or negative. When I've gone through a period of unhappiness or grappling with a health issue, I don't wear perfume.
    I use perfume as a way to boost a mood or express myself. I believe that there are particular times when a perfume is at its best -- whether a particular season or weather condition -- and that somehow helps me be in tune with the season.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yes this took a bit of thinking about how to put some of these. I think your mother's fragrance, if it's something they have worn for a long time, really stays with you. I agree with you nowadays. I think if I were upset now, I'd not want to wear fragrance for fear of creating bad associations. I think my attitude has changed as perfume has become a bigger and more prominent part of my life. Thanks for watching ❤️

    Thank you so much for sharing your personal stories! As I am newly sixty, I do find more and more that scents bring back memories- good and bad. I have mentioned previously that I inherited several vintage perfumes worn by my mother, such as Estée Lauder Cinnabar, azure, Aliage and Yves st Lauren opium. I remember my mother, in better days, getting dressed to go out and the perfume cloud that she created when she finished her routine. In contrast, Courrege in Blue, my signature scent in my twenties, reminds me of hope, youth, and uncertainty. Although this fragrance has been reformulated, I still wear it occasionally and I appreciate it as a beautiful unique floral aldehyde, worn at a different stage of my life, when I have accomplished my life goals and I’m confident in my own skin. My current “me” fragrance varies from week to week and I feel fortunate to enjoy several “perfect” fragrances.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Yes those huge clouds of fragrance are definitely a think with mums getting ready to go out! I can remember mum just smelling different when she was dressed up, I guess she oversprayed!
      I agree, different fragrances fit different life stages and the ones that I choose now are very different to the ones I would have gravitated towards in my twenties, but yes, they change on a regular basis. At nearly 40 now I feel very much more comfortable in my own skin now! It's a lovely feeling! Thanks for watching ❤️

    Before I fell into this fragrance rabbit hole, I totally had signature scents that connect me to certain times and events in my life. Even now, with an entirely too large collection, I will choose “a scent” for certain trips on purpose to create scent memories. Most recently we went to Disney with my 6 year old and Ylang in gold was the fragrance I wore daily. I’m looking forward to spraying it in the future and being transported in time through memory ❤ it’s most unfortunate when a special fragrance is discontinued though (my honeymoon frag was limited edition)

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I think as Ive bought more fragrances, I have tried to do the same thing. Choose one to wear on a special occasion like a holiday so that I have that association and memory because yes, without signature fragrances, that kind of link gets lost. I hope ylang ylang in gold brings you fabulous scent memories in the future. Thanks for watching ❤️

    Hello Claire,
    such a fantastic video! This is my favourite type of fragrance content because it tells a story and paints a picture. I appreciate the personal aspect and how it opens a window into who you are. I love how fragrance is so transportive that way.
    Some of the fragrances from my life are Chanel 5 which was my mom's fragrance when I was young I didn't like it when I put my nose to the bottle. Old Spice men's aftershave all the old guys wore it including my Grandfathers and my dad. Poison which was my favourite babysitter's perfume. Oscar De La Renta also my Mother's fragrance. Shalimar, Tresor, Opium and Poem my friend's mothers wore these classics and they are childhood to my nose. My best friend and I would go smell the bottles at the fragrance counters while we were out shopping as teenagers. Angel the fragrance that came out when I was in high school took over the entire fragrance department and the smell was everywhere. Giorgio Red the first perfume I talked my mom into buying for me for my birthday and then I found it too strong and gave it to my Step Grandmother who asked to have it. Chanel Allure one of the first fragrances I purchased for myself. Aqua Di Gioia another purchase because it was so different than anything I had smelled before like honey dew melon. Drakar Noir the first Christmas gift my partner gave me and I promptly gave back to him. I was obviously confused. it was for men. He said girls he knew liked it? He never asked me what I liked to wear. 😂. Obsession for her (I went through several bottles) and Eternity I went through a Calvin Kline Phase in the late 90's early 2000's. Le Feu d'Issey smelled it on a friend and had to have it. I think it got discontinued quickly and I only ever owned one bottle. I seem to love spicy ambers. Opium for men the first perfume I bought for my partner and he still wears it even though it's not the same as it once was. I loved the men's version more than the women's version more amber and spice less powder. I have the habit of swinging between fragrance styles because I only owned one bottle at a time and would tire of that perfume by the time I finished it. Gucci Rush which put me off perfumes for a very, very long time. I couldn't enter a perfume department without feeling nauseous because of the OG formula of that fragrance. Light Blue became my signature scent for 10 years!! 🙃 It never made me feel ill. My mom liked smelling it on me so much that she started wearing it. I don't wear it anymore. Now that I have a hobby of collecting fragrance I have a mixture of things. I enjoy being able to wear and I don't tire of my perfume. I like the idea of creating scent memories and I will choose carefully for special occasions.
    Like you, I am enjoying exploring different notes. I like finding the fragrances that strike an emotional reaction in me. They are the fragrances I want to own. I don't need a huge collection, I want a meaningful one. 😊
    I am glad your channel is here. You put time and energy into the content you make and it is thoughtful, educational and interesting. I hope you keep your love of perfume and of creating content. You make this space better!
    Have a fantastic day! Take Care!
    💛~ Jenn

      Thank you so much Jenn! That is a lovely message! You have a lot of very strong associations with fragrance. I never knew drakkar noir was something that a lot of women wore! I'm astounded! I think Calvin Klein was a stage for a lot of people in the 90s, they just captured the trend and the mood with their advertising campaigns.
      I think that's completely it for me, I love trying new fragrances but I sample and don't buy very much at all, I want to wear and enjoy all of my fragrances and gain connections with them by doing so, not continually buy and have many I rarely wear.
      Thanks for watching as always, I really appreciate it! I'm so happy that you enjoyed the video. 🥰

      Hi Claire,
      out of curiosity does Black Orchid go powdery on your skin? I went to Sephora today to try it on my skin and it turns powdery on my skin. My 7 year old likes how it smells, he seems to like complex fragrances. The 15 year old though it was powdery. I think it smells good on me. I was expecting earthy and boozy though. I wonder if the formula has changed recently?

    Loved this video. I was hoping someday someone would do a bit of their ''life story'' as a perfume journey. Veronica and Jax kinda did a few months ago, but I'm really liking this version too.
    Trésor and Anais Anais remind me of my grandmothers. My favorites for my mother are l'Heure bleue, Je reviens, Calandre, Fleurs de rocaille (not a fan of Bal à Versailles as much...). I could never deal with having a spouse who wears Eau sauvage; it's my fathers' go to and reminds me of when I'd cuddle up to him as a child. I can't stand CK One, because too many people wore it at my highschool and it did not necessarily suite them well.
    Childhood, Anais Anais or Cabbotine; teen years, Leap or White Musk from BodyShop; Perfect Calm from the Healing Garden 17 to 22, I think; Orange by Hugo Boss, Cashemere Mist EDT and Classique EDT JPG in my mid 20s and early 30s; hiatus in my 30s.
    Now, I don't know, there are so many. I do love licorice, vanilla and marshmallowy scents.
    I love your quirkiness and the fact that you are informative, it makes you relatable. I'm a total nerd and love being fed a lot of info.

    Hey Claire,
    Such a nice video you 've made!
    It's so true that fragrances are interwoven with phases of our lives, happy😊 or hard.
    For me Dolce Vita is associated with a very happy and carefree period of my life.
    Si is one of the most beautiful fragrances I 've ever smelled but it reminds me of a nasty experience as well as Bright Crystal.
    Also Eau de Givenchy and Tamango bring to me the happiness and enthusiasm of my teens.
    Thanks for sharing!

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I know completely what you mean! The most gorgeous fragrance can become associated with bad times, it doesn't have to be an unpleasant smell, just an unpleasant associated thought. The good ones are precious though and sniffing those can take you to wonderful places. Thanks for watching ❤️

  • @ioanas4839
    @ioanas4839 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Oh, love the video and your associations! Smell and memory are closely linked, indeed.
    As for me, I will mention just one perfume, the one that tranformed me into the fragrance obsessed person I am today: Neonatura Cocoon by Yves Rocher, the smell of my autumn hiking trips❤ Discontinued, of course😤

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's such a shame that it's discontinued! It just takes one fragrance and you are down the rabbit hole without any chance of escape! 😂
      The link of fragrances with memories is one of its most fascinating aspects to me.
      Thanks for watching ❤️

      I’m doing well and thanks for asking. Claire this video really touched me in a wonderful way. We have some things in common beyond that so find quite interesting. You were born the same year as my youngest son and I was born 21 years and ten days after my oldest sister. I am the youngest of 13 so I was blessed to have two sisters closer to my age, they were two and three years older than me. My mothers only scent was Chanel No 5 but I was introduced to many fragrances through my sisters and extended family. One is Estée Lauder Azuree. That was my oldest sister’s signature scents and I love it to this day. I can totally relate to the scents from the farm. I was raised in the city by parents who were farmers. I spent most of my summers visiting extended family on their farms. I will have to thank Jon for starting this tag. It’s given me a chance to revisit the ties to my life. Oh and I’m somewhat of a geek as well except on the IT side of things.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! This tag really makes you think! Takes you back to all these associations. 13 is a big family, I would love to have a sibling closer in age, it must be nice to have that range of closer and older ones, always someone to ask about different things.
      Actually I remember my mum being gifted Chanel no5 EDT when I was little and she did also wear that, but not very often, I think she just felt rive gauche was more her, although I think the two are compared, despite them being not very like each other.
      I'm glad this video brought up some memories for you and yes, love that you are a geek too! 🤓

      I can understand that. I tend to wear it in the cooler weather. I love it but I have to be in the mood for it, otherwise it can bother me. I do also think it's been reformulated sadly since I bought my bottle 🤷‍♀️

    Interesting! In Japan, we often call green 'blue'. Foreign people doubt that we might be color blind😊 But there is a fragrance named 'Blue Grass' in English!

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's interesting! I think perhaps Blue Grass might refer to the "blue" grass of Kentucky (Poa praetensis) which looks more green-blue en masse but green individually. It might also be a bit of a play on words with Grasse (in France, which is famous for perfumery).
