It might be, but the thing is China has made incredible leaps as well, it is an economic superpower that actually attracted a few of the world's brightest minds. As Tesla Bot aims to be at around 20 to 25k$ (hopefully not more), I heard that a Chinese company is trying to achieve the same results by keeping the price tag at 16k$, which would utterly destroy the american innovation if they don't find some type of huge edge to justify the price tag. There's also Apple fans-like customers so we could expect that to work well with the right marketing/brainwashing.

So while this is a leap forward in terms of how a robot can walk similarly to a human, I think the knowledge of how they got there is more important, because no matter how agile these robots become, it’s the brains behind how they will be able to interpret, and traverse their environments, and how and what they’re able to actually do, that actually replaces what a human person can do in terms of real tasks that leads to a productive outcome don’t you think?

omg finally! thank god that i may live to see this. after decades of watching robot videos and getting more frustrated and worried each time that no one seems to care about this. go engineai! this looks already 1000 times better than anything i have seen from all the other companys. i would buy this one over all the others just because of its walk. i simply cannot watch the bent knees anymore, it drives me crazy. so, extremely well done!
but i just wonder: it still does not have toes. a bendable section at the tip of the foot. a ball of the foot. when it rolls off it has to do so on a sharp edge at the front of the foot. why couldnt they make at least a passive solution for that? it wouldnt need a motor in it.
lets make an experiment together: stand up and stand with straight legs on your two flat feet, your weight evenly distributed between your heel and your ball of the foot. now lean slightly forward and shift your weight on your ball of the foot and toes. now lift your heels as high as you can. you will notice that you can stand like this. you are standing on your toes and your ball of the foot. this is essential for efficient walking, running, stair climbing, squatting, everything!
no robot can do this! not even this one. and it is the essence of everything that has to do with human feet. humans do everything with the ball of the foot, not with flat feet. i dont understand, why no one seems to get this. i understand that it is hard to engineer, but no one seems to even give it a try.

First of all, you must understand the difference between Chinese robot manufacturers and American robot manufacturers such as Boston Dynamics. Most Chinese robot manufacturers are preparing for mass production and sales, while Boston Dynamics has not yet mass-produced consumer-level products. Their robot cost control is simply It’s a nightmare. If it were in China, Boston Dynamics would be finished long ago. The Chinese will not trust toys that stay in the laboratory forever. There are dozens of large and small robot manufacturers in China. The competition is very fierce. They cannot be like the United States. Robot manufacturers arbitrage from the financial market. Only by launching consumer-grade robots and achieving sales can they obtain investment and government subsidies to survive. The competition among robot manufacturers in the U. S is far less fierce than the competition among Chinese robot manufacturers. Therefore, The Chinese can build a robot that costs just $16,000, but American robot makers simply can’t

Boston Dynamic 1st Atlas was custom build using hydraulics for motion. The robot was 100% built as a project to explore movement through real world environments. The robot was not a use case for factory work, it has no hands a very important omission in their project. Additionally it was not designed for mass scale production like Optimus. The cost of Atlas was estimated to be in the range of $150k.
Tesla is build using proprietary low cost parts and factory to build it at a mass scale possibily millions. Elon stated this is just one of many designs they have in mind. The whole design is to get work done not for entertainment purposes. That's why it's not going to initially be doing back flips and acrobatics. Estimated cost for optimus is $20-$30k.
The new Atlas has electric motors so they are starting from ground zero like all the other robot producers. We don't think hydraulic engineering translates over to electrical engineering, they have no advantage over anyone.

If this is indeed real then people really do need to wean themselves off of Musk’s Koolaid where he and Tesla simply refuse to acknowledge serious competition and talk as if they already own this future. Fact is presently they are not at the forefront of innovation whatever their hype. Now we need to accept there is a lot more to a robot that just walking like a human but nonetheless very concerning indeed just how presently they seem to be falling behind at least in motive capabilities and other companies are presently showing superior ai capabilities too.

Anyone can make a robot model that looks good in a video and has 'cool' new features and can seemingly walk in a pattern in an open room. Where musk EXCELS is in the robot's autonomous locating and detecting software that allows it to fully autonomously detect and engage obstacles and humans in it's day to day routines without causing accidents. Tesla's engineering and manufacturing capabilities are likewise unmatched.
If you think 36 humans and NVidia's Isaac sandpit can compete with Tesla you have another think coming.
Innovation is fine but you need to be able to upscale to volume manufacturing with excellent safety records to be a real competitor to Tesla. That takes time and huge money.

Chinese robot manufacturers need to launch consumer-grade products to obtain investment and achieve sales to survive. The competition is very fierce. In other words, you will know whether it is true or not at the earliest next year. Most American robot manufacturers are just for arbitrage in the stock market. American robots basically remain in the laboratory. Another Chinese robot manufacturer is trying to maintain a selling price of $16,000 to build a robot comparable to the one in this video. This is cost control that cannot be achieved in the United States or outside of China. Chinese robot factories must sell robots to survive. If the video is fake, the company will die soon because the Chinese market only believes in product sales. Boston Dynamics has not yet mass-produced consumer-grade products. If it were in China, Boston Dynamics would have been finished long ago. The Chinese will not believe in toys that will always stay in the laboratory.

Legs just seem soo unnecesary for moving robots, they can clear all kinds of stairs on treads with a certain design… So why install at least 4 motors for every joint in each leg? Maybe for making it seem a bit more realistic, as in "lets give it legs so the owner enjoys its company more".

@@TechnoMinarchist right, but there's more efficient ways to get from point a to point b, aren't there? In the end, I believe there will be many setups to choose from and the possibility to customize them.

    Clever engineering? Sure.
    Leading in robotics? No.
The hardware is trivial. It does not matter how fluid walking is.
What's nontrivial is performing useful tasks safely and accurately.
You can't just assume that AGI will arrive, be plopped into a robot body, and voila, done. That's naive.
The robotics leaders are putting robots on factory floors to perform useful tasks.
If you ask these guys if their robots can do that, all you'll get is blank stares. They, like you, are assuming away the hardest part of robotics.
Honestly: do you know what AGI will look like? What its limitations will be? How much compute and energy it will require? When it will arrive?
Of course not. Nobody can answer that.
Leaders in robotics are not waiting for those answers. They are training robots to perform useful tasks safely - and they're doing it *now.*
Robot bodies are the easy part. The hard part is still ahead.
