    I bought an EGO last year. No problems but then again, I have a relatively small yard and I never really challenged the machine. Then today, I gave it a challenge. I hit a hidden tree root about the size of a fist. The electric motor stopped instantly. A yellow light began blinking on the top of the unit. I thought I broke something and would have to pay $200 bucks for repairs. Not knowing what to do. I popped loose the battery and gave the underside a look. I saw no damage and I hand-turned the blade. All seemed okay. I reinserted the battery and turned it on. Well, what do you know... no problems. I finished the lawn, removed the battery for charging and gave the underside of the mower another look. Nope, no damage. Thumbs up.

    I’ve had the original Ego 20-inch, non self-propelled mower since they were first introduced - I think that’s about six years now. Still going strong! It’s so good, I outfitted my garage with the blower, the trimmer and the hedge trimmer. I have about five EGO 56v batteries and they are still working fine. The mower’s fast charger is excellent. I want to upgrade to a new 21-inch, self-propelled crosscut mower but really don’t need to. It hands down beats any mower I’ve ever owned. I cut about a half acre with a full battery and maybe a third of a smaller one. The construction of the EGO mower is impressive. I have lots of Ryobi 18-V tools and would consider a Ryobi if I were starting from scratch, but I must say my EGO mower and blower are probably my favorite garage and yard toys. Excellent products.

    Ok. I have the EGO 56v and I was taking it over my my elderly mom’s house very frequently. It’s very heavy and I was having trouble lifting it into the bed of my truck. So mom decided she was going to get her own mower. She had been using a mowing service but it got too expensive.
    She and my sister decided on the Ryobi 40v.
    This is an honest review after using both mowers multiple times.
    Mom’s Ryobi feels weak and fragile compared to the ego. It has less than half the battery life of the ego. It burns through its original battery in less than 30 min. We ordered a second battery and has even less run time. I timed the recharge of both batteries. Original-1hr.28 min. The replacement battery 1 Hr 15 min.
    My ego charges in just about an hour and will go just about an hour on a full charge.
    If the Ryobi hits dense, taller grass, it bogs down and dies quickly. The ego doesn’t seem to notice and chews right through. My ego cost almost $200 more than mom’s Ryobi, but in my opinion, is worth it. If you’re used to a gas mower, you’ll hate the Ryobi. You’ll spend most of your time waiting on the batteries to recharge rather than mowing. With the ego, you can just get out and get the job done. My yard is just about 7 tenths of an acre and the ego battery can handle it all without recharge.

    • @TheLawnReview
      @TheLawnReview  ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed over here. They have pros and cons for sure - but we had a similar experience. Always tough going to the Ryobi after you've used the EGO. But if you are just starting out the Ryobi can still be pretty great.

    A huge consideration is how long does the battery take to charge, Ego 7.5 amp hour takes less then an hour on a fast charger. So if you can’t finish mowing on a full charge you can charge for 20 or 30 minutes and finish. Some electric mowers take over 2 hours to fully charge, so you would be waiting quite a while to get a decent amount of charge to finish .something to consider unless you have multiple batteries. And even if you can cut your whole lawn on one charge today doesn’t mean that you will in a few years when the battery degrades.

    If I didn't already have Ryobi weed trimmer, with the 40v battery, I might look closer at the EGO, but since I do have the Ryobi weed trimmer (and quite happy with it), I am probably going to get a 20" Ryobi (non self propelled) so that I can use the batteries interchangeably. We have 2 acres, but only a small portion immediately around the house is actual lawn. The rest is "natural" and I keep that mowed with a Craftsman riding mower (gas). The Ryobi model I'm looking at is currently $349 on sale (normally $400) which is just under our limit we decided on.

    Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

    You lost me on an electric mower when you said I can cut the run time in half by using the self-propelled function. I was honestly interested up until that statement.

    • @TheLawnReview
      @TheLawnReview  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man! Thanks for the feedback! We pride ourselves on giving you an honest representation of what to expect! I’ve been a gas guy for a very long time and told myself I’d never go electric but my mind has been changed due to the sheer convenience aspect of not having to fix/maintain my mower as much or deal with gas. Yeah, I may have to invest in another battery but most of the tools come with a battery so that’s not too big of a deal. Then you don’t lose half the runtime while using self propelled function! But I hear ya man! So appreciative of the feedback!

    Volts is streignth. Amp hours is current and current volume. Power is a function of both. Power=volts×amps. Amps=amp hours/time of use so if its a 6ah battery and you drained it in a half hour ur running 12 amps. 12a×40v=480watts. Way below 1hp. This why I dont buy the hype of electric mowers.

    Avoid Ego at all costs. Quality has gone way down. My battery died after a year after purchasing. Replacement died after 2 and now they are saying tough luck that it's outside warranty. My string timmer went down and it took 3 months to fix. It seems customer service has gotten pretty bad over the last 8 years I have used their stuff.

      @@TheLawnReview It's sad. I have enjoyed their products for probably 10 years. More recently added another weedeater/edger. If failed and the battery failed twice. The worst part is 2/3rds the cost is the battery. This is the start of how companies die. Poor reliability and poor customer service.

      EGO is owned by Chervon which is a Chinese company in Shanghai. Chervon has an assembly plant in the US and they produce some of the mowers but most of them are produced in China.

      I've had my Ryobi 40 volt 20" mower for about 9 years now and I use it to cut fairly heavy grass on about a third of an acre at one of our vacation houses about every 2 weeks. It's held up incredibly well. But at this point, when I'm going to upgrade the gear at this house, I am going to get an ego self-propelled instead of the ryobi. Partially because I can use the batteries in the 28-inch snowblower that ego has, which is considerably more powerful than the 24-inch ryobi snowblower.
      The problem is the service on both brands has gone downhill now that you can't take your product back to Home Depot with Ryobi any longer. I've never needed to do that, but I understand it's a real pain now. Although I'm not sure if ego is going to be any better in that regard.
