    Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

    for the price, I paid 299 for my sp ryobi, you can't go wrong unless your yard is problematic. I have a 1/2 acre to mow, flat and hills. for the price I was able to purchase other tools with more batteries with the budget I had set aside, I'm pleased.

    Great review and realistic because the grass is quite long, unlike so many reviews that pretend to cut the lawn.

    One other thing to keep in mind when choosing a new lawnmower is the size of your yard. No need for a more powerful and longer run time mower if you only have a small yard. Ryobi is lighter and easier to turn and batt lasts for several mows and recharges in about 90 mins. I have a small yard and use a Ryobi 20 inch, 4 amp hour battery and couldn't be happier.

    We bought an EGO +2 years ago after I injured my back and needed a self-propelled and lighter mower. Best damn lawn equipment investment I ever made! Quiet, light, durable. I'm tall and have a long stride and its nice to have a handle that doesn't make me stoop over and it's the only self-propelled mower I've ever used that I didn't have to set to full speed and still have it too slow. This would let me just about jog behind it, but too fast on any mower makes for a sloppy cut.
    Love how quiet it is also. Not much louder than a house fan on a very high speed.
    Really tall and/or wet grass will drain the battery quicker. Do yourself a favor and buy the quick-charger & bigger battery option. I've only run out of juice twice and it was fully charged again in under 30 minutes!
    It does come with a steel deck option, but as I'm not a professional lawn guy nor have a yard full of rocks, the plastic is very durable and makes it a lot lighter and easier on battery life.

    I've had my EGO non-self propelled mower for 3 yrs with no problems. Prior to that I went through 6 gas powered mowers in 10 yrs. My wife uses it on our 1/2 acre lot and says it's the best tool I ever bought. I bought the weedeater and chainsaw also and they are great. No longer have to worry about gas or oil.

    I have owned the Ryobi 40v 20” push only mower for a few years. It is a nice trim mower, but the battery lasts only 30 minutes and the charge time is a few hours. I already had a lot of Ryobi tools including a 40v weed eater from Ryobi so I bought the push mower for trimming. It has worked pretty well as a trim mower. Now during the Covid19 pandemic, my riding mower quit on me. Oh, I mow about 2 acres in the country. So I am using this Ryobi to mow the whole place. It takes 2 days if the grass is very short or 5/6 days if the grass is over grown. It is not so bad in these days since I have a lot of time. When I am able to get out and pick up a new riding mower I will. Thanks for your review, I have seen it before. A Friend was looking and I recommended the EGO unless they already had Ryobi batteries. He is very happy with the EGO. Oh by the way, the 5Amp Hour for each gives much difffernt Watt Hours since the EGO is 56v (280 watt- hour) and the Ryobi is 40v or (200 watt- hour).

    I purchased the EGo about 4 months ago and I love it. I have a relatively small yard so run time is no issue at all, I think I may have hit it twice on one charge a few times. My only criticism is less a complaint and more just pointing it out for potential buyers...it's rear wheel drive. After mowing the lawn for a few decades and always tilting the mower back with the drive still engaged while making a turn, it's taken some getting used to.

    I owned both of these during the last two months. For me, there is no comparison, but your results may differ. I have a small 1/8th acre city lot. I first bought the Ryobi, because it had the walk at your pace feature. The variable speed depends on how far forward you press the handle. The Ego requires you to set the speed via a small red speed switch with your left hand. The first Ryobi walk at your own pace feature worked great until I completed most of the front yard. Then pushing it in just a little caused it to go full speed. At 74, I just couldn't keep up with it. I got it replaced, The second Ryobi worked perfectly, I finished the front yard and started the side yard. The self propelled went out entirely. I took it back and bought the Ego. The Ego finished the side yard and the back yard with no further problems. I've mowed the front, back and side yards three times with the ego. I find the little speed switch easy to deal with when I want to go faster or slower.

    • @BobGrosh
      @BobGrosh 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One more thing. The blade shown in the video on the Ego appears to be a high lift blade, not the regular blade mine came with. My Ego would not pick up leaves and the grass bag quickly got clogged up with grass and not completely filled. I ordered the optional high lift blade after my first cutting. Now it sucks up leaves, even the magnolia tree leaves. If you buy the Ego, check to see if it comes with the regular blade and buy the high lift version. Changing the blade was very easy and made a huge difference..

    I have the Ego and I have to say it a beast especially with the blower it's like a wind storm, well worth it. Dat battery charges so fast by the time I finish putting away my equipment its done charging. Not going to lie while charging the fans in the charger get really loud for the 1st little bit but no big deal , worth every penny. The weed wacker is ok but not the greatest, but all an all it's worth the money 💰.

    I've had an Ego for about a year now. I just love it. In the spring when the lawn is high I sometimes have to stop to recharge the battery. (I have a big yard) In the summer it goes just fine on one charge. I also will only use the self propel sparingly to increase battery life. My neighbor doesn't even know I am mowing my lawn. It's that quiet.

  • @lvmykdz5724
    @lvmykdz5724 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have an EGO Mower (not self-propelled), blower, weed wacker, and chainsaw. I could not be happier with these EGO products. The nice thing is, with exception of the mower, all batteries are interchangeable. Also, I get about 6-8 mows in of my front yard before I have to recharge the battery on the mower. No more messing with fuel, no more gasoline smell in the garage and they are much quieter than gas powered products.

    Tried the ego at my cousins place and it’s a nice machine. But for me, I got hooked on ryobi ecosystem due to a cheap used 40V weed trimmer and have the mower now as well. Yes, the ego is much nicer but I think the ryobi is a good unit as well. I will monitor battery usage but all in- battery mowers are much more enjoyable to use foe the average homeowner with 1/2 acre or less.

  • @ryanstage3912
    @ryanstage3912 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    A good honest review for those in the market. I personally went with Ryobi and without the self propelled option, i feel you get a longer run time and they are so light and easy to push anyways. Works perfectly on a 1/4 acre lot and i felt more comfortable that Ryobi would be around in 5ish years for replacement batteries. I also have to carry the mower up some steps between the back and front so light weight was a big reason too and the reason i replaced my petro lawnmower with a cordless electric.
    The Ego is the better mower but the price point for that 7.5ah battery is crazy IMO.

    I have the 21 inch EGO with 7.5 amp battery. I have a small lot and I’m in my 5th season. The original battery is just now starting to slow. I could always finish the job with no problem. Now, I barely get finished. Not looking forward to $300 + for a new 7.5 amp battery.
    However, I’m completely satisfied with EGO. Batteries recharge quickly! I have the weed eater and blower. Great products too, but the 2.5 amp batteries are on their last legs.
    Hint, like any mower, it bogs down in heavy grass. Quickly drains the battery!

It's a little of 5 yrs old & still going strong. 90 min charge time, upgraded to the rapid charge batteries & charger for about a 45 min charge time. Your review of these mowers is excellent! It was refreshing to see you put both machines cards on the table and give them a fair shake. I have mostly Ryobi battery powered gear. It would be an easy call to continue that down the line. Being able to use the 40V batteries on other equipment besides the mower is a plus for Ryobi. However, your candid review with your wise emphasis on TCO - total cost of ownership - vs purchase price is very compelling. I like both products and they each offer value. That said, I may go with the EGO. Your callout on the double-wall deck, wheel bearings, power and higher run-time with the EGO reveal it to be a notch above the Ryobi.

      Hey Rick; Just wanted to echo your comments completely. I also have a gambit of Ryobi power tools / yard care stuff, and an absolute slew of batteries and charging stations, and I'm reaching the same conclusion. It also appears that the Ryobi battery on the lawnmower isn't the same as the LI batteries we typically use for hand power tools as well. While it may take the same charger, the lack of reciprocity also matters! And I'm really glad to see your comment too, as it acts as a confirmation, and I really haven't seen too many top comments recommending the Ryobi from Ryobi buyers.

    • @personperson9591
      @personperson9591 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I'm aware, Ryobis 40v is dedicated specifically for their outdoor tools, I don't think there's a huge selection to choose from, if I didn't already own part of the 40v I'd recommend running away from them. They're only sold at Home Depot (aside from third party unofficial sales on other sites, but those usually cost even more), and they really don't have good build quality overall, several of the products have somewhat high failure rates. The problem with them only being at Home Depot is the less places a product is sold, the less chances of finding great sales and also generic batteries, which straight up don't seem to exist for the 40v system.
      The least impressive part of the 40v is their mowers, they don't cut that great, I have that self-propelled and it's as heavy as a gas propelled unit (meaning it's rather heavy for a battery unit), my old gas mower is lighter, the gas also cuts a lot better, the Ryobi leaves a bit of scragginess to the lawn several owners have also pointed out. Overall if you don't own part of the Ryobi 40v already, I'd recommend going with a different brand.

    Since I already have the excellent Ryobi 40v edger / trimmer and Ryobi 40v Hedge trimmer it would make sense to get the Ryobi lawn mower as they use the same batteries. Those 2 products work so well and the charges last so long, I can't imagine I would have a problem.

    Just purchased the new model Ryobi 40v self-propelled and brushless motor, came with a 6amp/hr battery. Cut my whole back and front yard (at least over a 1/4 acre together) in about 40 minutes on one charge, still a little left actually. Not sure I see the benefit of the EGO with it being more than $120 the cost of Ryobi. Certainly would recommend the Ryobi. Plus, my other tools from Ryobi (have the 40v Blower and a bunch of 18v ONE+ tools) have never let me down.

    I have the older (green) non self propelled Ryobi mower w/5ah battery. It's about 4yrs old and we've beat it around trees, decks and under bushes quite a bit. I have about 3 acres to mow, so my Ryobi is just used for trimming. Don't usually need two batteries for that, but it has storage for a second battery on board. So if you are mowing and your battery runs low, you just swap the batteries where you are, instead of walking back to the garage. And when you're 300 feet away it's convenient.
    The nice thing about Ryobi is the amount of tools that take that same 40v battery. My string trimmer is convertible to a pole saw. My blower takes the same battery, as does my chain saw and hedge trimmer. Nobody makes the best of everything, but Ryobi makes good products. And as far as battery systems, Ryobi has it over most companies for the number of tools that take the same battery.
    I'm sure that 56v ego battery weighs a fair amount more than the Ryobi 40v and is bulkier. When using hand held tools the weight and size makes a difference in using it comfortably for longer than a couple of minutes. And an ego 5ah battery is about $250. If you buy a second, as suggested in the video, your mower ($549 +$249) is now creeping up to $800. And if you buy a second 7.5ah battery at $350 now you're looking at $900.
    I'm satisfied with the Ryobi products so far. Price/performance is good enough for most homeowners.
    They have a new 21in self propelled metal deck mower out now It comes with a 6ah battery. It would be interesting to see it in action.

    I purchased this Ego Self Propelled Mower a few days ago from Home Depot and I got to say that is was money well spent. This mower is everything you could ask for in a mower. I still got to get use to operating a battery operated mower given that I have been using gas mowers since I was 11 years old. But it is adjustment that won’t take long considering how much of a pleasure it is to use this awesome machine. Ego Mowers are awesome.

    1:07 that's not how batteries work. you can't compare the amp hour of a 40V system to a 56V system. Otherwise, you might wonder how its possible I have a battery in the palm of my hand that is rated at 10AH, but that's because its at 2V. You have to compare watt-hour, not amp hour. Watts is amps x voltage, so a 5 amp hour 56V will be 280 watt hours of energy and 5 amp hour 40V will be 200 watt hours, so the EGO would have a 40% higher capacity battery even when they are the same amp hour.

      This is a functional--not an equivalency--test. Ryobi claims volts are less important than amp-hours which is ridiculous. That's why, along with the quicker recharge time, why I chose the EGO. I also bought the EGO trimmer that came with a 2.5 Ah battery + charger, so I can use both batteries to do the entire yard.
      NOTE: EGO recently updated their batteries with a fuel gauge.

    I have a Ryobi leaf blower, two Ryobi weed eaters, the smaller single string and the larger dual string. Three chargers also. All 40 volt. I found a 40 volt Ryobi self propelled on e-bay for $289.00 and free shipping today. Had to buy it. My better half and I are both on SSI so I need the light weight stuff so she can help. :-) So I will have plenty of battery power. I just charge everything up the night before doing yard work with no problems. I don't for see any problems. If the wheels seem to be a problem, I'll go to Harbor freight and get some with ball bearings. I see that the 4ah batterys are $64.00 bucks now so I'll bet by the time I need replacements I'll be looking at $50 bucks or lower. Ryobi has always been on the ball so I bet they come out with a quick charger before long. But the EGO seems like a heck of a mower. I worked construction all my life and I always had pretty good luck with Ryobi. Always a good price. And some knuckle head was always losing or breaking something so buying a less expensive tool made sense. We don't have an overly large lawn so I'm sure we will be fine. Great video guys. Fair comparisons in my opinion. Thanks for doing all the ones you do.

      Yes I agree. The ryobi is probably not as fancy as EGo but more common and used ones are coming to a Craigslist near you. I like using a somewhat lower cost item because if it gets damaged I won’t feel as bad as a high cost ego or whatever.

I don't use the self-propelled motor much at all - the mower is light enough that it's not necessary and I figure it will drain the battery quicker. (It wasn't clear to me if the tests were performed in self-propelled mode or not.) The reason I bought that model is because of the larger battery, which doesn't come with the push only model. I'm cutting upwards of 3/4 acre, so battery run time is key. The battery will last about an hour, 45 min. in taller grass, and I allow an hour for recharge. I can usually cut the whole lawn in 2 to 2.5 charges. I paid $599 at Home Depot in Nov. 2016, so it looks like the price came down in the year since then. Also, while the warranty on the mower is 5 years, the warranty on the battery and charger is 3 years.

    Thanks again for great reviews. It was good to try to level the playing field on run time but at 56 volts, the 5Ah EGO battery provides 280 watt hours versus 200 on the Ryobi. This is not a criticism but should be a consideration when comparing run time. Even when normalizing to a per watt hour basis, the EGO still outperforms the Ryobi. Your reviews are always my go to.

    Ive owned my EGO mower for about 3 years and 4 months now, its been great, no issues with mine at all.
    I also have the straight trimmer, bought it online from home depot. The only problem ive had is with the batteries that came with the trimmer, they completely died. Original battery only lasted 1 cycle, the replacement battery didnt last either.
    Battery that came with the mower though, it still keeps going to today.

      Same problem with 2.5 ah battery. 7.5 ah battery is all growed up though, so it can take care of itself.
      The 2.0 ah that came with the hedge trimmer though...I think it had to toughen up at the orphanage to survive. It's like that skinny little kid in middle school that can knock out a grown man and then is still quick enough to chase down the rest of the fat friend bully club. Maybe the 2.5 is the invisible middle brother?

    Think I'll go with the Ego. Battery charge time is way better. Along with run time. The batter cell size of Ego is alot bigger but it helps it from getting to hot. Hence why it can changer right after use. Though charging any better while its hot will shorten the life of the battery a lot. Probably why cell phones users batteries go to shit.
    Plus the charger for the Ego looks to charge at larger amps. One amp will charge 1 Ah in one hour. Another reason the Ego probably cost more for better charger.
    I thought the 56v Ego would get less run time on same fuel cell size battery of the Ryobi due to it being 40v.
    I guess the 56v brush-less motor struggles less.
    Awesome review.
    So if it takes 45min to charge 5.0Ah. then hour and 10min for 7.5Ah

    With the recent price drop, there is no better time to go Electric than now with the 21" EGO self propelled mower. I have had mine for over a year and I am still amazed by its performance compared to gas mowers. Buy an extra blade, keep them sharp and balanced and you'll be good to go. I have a little over 3/4 acre to mow and I just trade the 7.5 AH and 5.0 AH battery as needed if I run out of juice. They charge very quickly. The 7.5 AH I received with the lawnmower. The 5.0 AH with the backpack blower. There are NO better electric lawn care tools out there. Build quality is amazing and battery tech has no equal for power and longevity at this price point. EGO Big or EGO Home! :)

    The EGO batteries have changed to where the power indicator on top of the battery now have four segments so it's easy to see how much power is left. I have the 7.5 battery on my mower and I purchased an additional 7.5 battery because my yard is 1.25 acres, I can mow for an hour and fifteen minutes before I have to change out my battery, I put the spent battery on the charger and run the second battery, by the time I use up the second battery the first battery is recharged and ready to go. It takes me about three hours to do my 1.25 acres.

    Great review, thanks, but there was no reason to put a lesser amp battery in the Ego. Compare the mowers in how they come, stock from the store, and get a true comparison on run time for what the consumer is getting. You didn’t put a 20” blade on the Ego, to even out the grass cutting resistance of the two. That is part of the reason the Ego has a more powerful battery.I would definitely buy the Ego, based on this comparison. Ego has a head start on Ryobi in building electric lawnmowers, but Ryobi read needs to rethink theirs, it seems. The blade hitting the side, and the cheap wheels are unacceptable!

    The Ego looks as if it's built more "heavy duty". Ball bearing wheels are a an absolute must. I have 40v brushless 21" Ryobi. This is my second mowing season with it.
    A: The grass bag falls off way to easily.
    B: Wheels squeak annoyingly non stop even though frequently sprayed with WD40 or another lubricant.
    C: Left side clamp that holds the handle in place once it's extended is not staying in place. It's releasing while I'm mowing.
    D: Mower has begun shutting off when it's moved in a sliding fashion like when butting up flush against house/fence.
    E: Charge time is ludicrous. About 3 hours if fully drained. I bought a second battery ($140) but wished I'd bought battery w/charger pack.
    While I really like it & enjoy the convenience, I'm pretty sure I won't be getting another Ryobi mower. It's my first battery operated mower so I'm viewing this as a learning experience as I continue to monitor other companies' battery operated mowers. Ryobi has a great 5 year warranty but mower handles don't feel like they'll last 5 years.

    • @dilumd
      @dilumd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      How old is your Ryobi? They have a newer version now. Its $250 at HD now. The ego is about $379-400. So about a $150 difference, So if you were thinking of buying one of the two, would you go for the ego now?

    • @jst601
      @jst601 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dilum De Silva I'm in my 2nd mowing season this spring/summer. I saw the current HD ad for the Ryobi 40v 20" brushless mower with 5ah battery & charger for $250.00. That's a *screaming* deal, considering that when purchased separately the 5ah battery is about $130 & the charger is $60.00. For that package price (mower/battery/charger) with Ryobi's warranty & service, it's hard to turn down.
      I looked at Lowe's Cobalt brand last month & was really impressed with the build quality. It's so much better than my Ryobi. Cobalt & Ego mowers are on my radar now.

    • @dilumd
      @dilumd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats Exactly how i was thinking too. Also they have a 40v jet blower with 3ah battery and charger for $120.
      So if you get that you have about 8ah of battery all together. How does it do on thick and high grass? Mulchig, does leave big clumps? And how fast does the battery discharge on those types of high grass?

    • @jst601
      @jst601 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dilum De Silva My Ryobi mulches fine. Battery drains faster if grass is wet or thick, or wet & thick. And that's not bad if it just didn't take 3+ hours to charge each of those 5ah batteries. Mowed yesterday, after 10 days since mowing last time: grass was thick & wetter than I wanted it to be because of spot rain last couple of days. Mowed back & front with power to spare in 2nd battery. It cuts fine; sometimes I'll see something it missed but I used to see that from time to time with my previous Toro mowers. Even with dislikes in my Ryobi I will not bash it cause it's been a great learning experience with battery mowers. It's so quiet; lightweight, super easy to transport, & starts every time I hit it! I'm not nearly as tired as I was from pushing a heavy framed 22" mower. Mine's not nearly as draining on the user. I use it to mow my yard, my widow neighbor's yard & my mom in-laws yard. I get a lot of use out of it & it's so freaking hassle free & easy to use & maintain that I refuse to diss it. And I'll never go back to gas. It simply works every time I need it to, clean & easy. Five year mower warranty, 3 year battery warranty. Even though some things look better, I'm tickled with mine. I can save up for my next mower purchase while I'm still covered with a great warranty. That's a win.

    RYOBI POS: As you said, it works great for smaller yards for the price. This is important for those with lower household incomes, just to get into the green yard maintenance.
    RYOBI CON: The "high speed" body look. There are a lot of accents that are maid to make this mower look like it is supposed to go 50mph and need a lot of air intake. These accents are just for show and a pain to clean up. I have to now brush off all the debris to prevent a more pain in the rear accumulated clean up. My recommendation to Ryobi is to keep it simple, get rid of the crazy accents, and streamline to help with cleanup.

    Here are some quick tips to prolong the lifetime of your battery.
    1. The chargers these mowers come with are dumb chargers that will overcharge your battery if you don't make sure to remove it as soon as it's done charging. Overcharging can damage your battery very quickly, so what you'll want to do is note how long the battery takes to recharge, then in the future, put the charger on a timer so it shuts off before your battery starts overcharging. (If your battery is getting hot in the charger, it's overcharging.)
    2. Fully discharging your battery will gradually damage it. To avoid this, it's best to recharge your battery before it goes dead. In fact, it's also good to stop charging your battery before it's fully charged too. Running your battery up to 80% charge and then down to 30% will give it a good lifetime, although you might be able to get away with 85% and 25%. A lot of these mowers don't give you this kind of specific information about the battery though, so if that's the case, aim to charge it before it's "full" and recharge it before it's "empty"
    3. Don't store your battery in a fully charged or fully discharged state. Aim to store it at 40% state of charge (or if you don't have that specific info, aim for "half charged" and keep it somewhere cool. If you're storing it over winter, it's a good idea to get it out and charge it for a few minutes to maintain its state of charge. Avoid storing or operating the battery at hot temperatures (above 86 F), which degrade batteries. Fully charged batteries at high ambient temperatures also rapidly degrade Li ion batteries.

  • @beforebefore
    @beforebefore 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Comparing battery Amp-hours versus running time isn't correct, unless both mowers use the same battery voltage.
    It's Watt-hours that you should compare. Watt-hours = Volts x Amp-hours. 40V @ 5Ah = 200 Wh; whereas 56V @ 5Ah = 280 Wh.
    The advantage with higher voltage mowers is that the electric motor has a lot more Power (Watts) to mow with... which has a direct translation to HP (horsepower) since 1 HP = 745.7 Watts. This is why the best mowers now use 80V batteries/motors.
    In the end, if you have more Power (in Watts or HP) to mow with, it will pull less Current from the battery, increasing run-time.

    • @Shindinru
      @Shindinru 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. The stock 7.5A battery on the EGO gives 420Wh (2.1 times the Ryobi). It's like comparing a 3hp mower to a 5hp. Both are up to the task but the 5hp mower will do it with less trouble.

    • @florzellpaschal4405
      @florzellpaschal4405 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with everything you are saying, but that still doesn't excuse build quality. I think Ryobi has a good product but the fact that the side wall of the blade housing is flimsy enough to be easily pushed into the running blade is unacceptable. I didn't look at the age of this video either, but I think Ryobi now makes a 21" vs the 20" used in the video. Hopefully they made some improvements that would make the comparison a little more even.

    Plus the Ego has an extra inch of cut. So on 41 swipes you actually cut approx 7800 square feet of grass. Where the Ryobi only cuts approx 2520 square feet of grass. That is approx 3 times the amount of grass more for the Ego. I just bought the Ego 21” and have used it all morning having to charge it 3 times. If I had to wait almost 4 hours to charge it would take me 2 days to cut my lawn.

    Depending partially on the quality of the batteries, lithium batteries life span is shortened by fast charging and the batteries are still very expensive. Not something you could test, I know. You might have mentioned the weight difference. The non self-propelled Ryobi is extremely light if, as in our case, a heavier mower tends to leave ruts in a lawn with plenty of rain and poor soil. The very reason I'm going to sell my Honda gas mower for a lighter battery powered, probably the Ryobi w/o self propel. Hope I don't regret that!

    Great review. FYI the voltage on these are different so 5ah x 40v = 200watt hours for the Ryobi and 5ah x 56v = 280watt hours for the Ego. That's almost 40% more battery life on the Ego. Not really a fair comparison.
